Living quite far outside of Baltimore I usually muddle through and figure out my knitting on my own, however i had a mistake that really needed HELP dealing with!.. i found Lovely Yarns online, phoned them up and went in.. honestly I was Not expecting such a warm welcome or the level of help I received ( for which I can't be thankful enough!) I love Lovelyyarns. The owner is sweet and helpful. The yarns are beautiful and there's a whole price range available. If I could ask for anything else from Lovely Yarns, it would be a bigger shop and more clarity/visibility of prices (I want this for every yarn shop, though. Customers should never have to ask how much things cost in a retail environment. At least LY, though, puts tags on its yarn, even if they are small!) I've heard so many horror stories on the interwebs about snobby snooty yarn places, this is far from it. You come here to hand hug their yarns and leave with a bag full of delight! Visiting local yarn shops is something I do as part of my extensive business travel. It helps me meet people and share a common interest. I went to Lovelyarns with my son... my flight from BWI had been cancelled on a Friday night so I called him to join me from DC and we spent a lovely day together on Saturday. I knit for my son and he likes to pick out the yarn. He made some stellar selections from the distinctive lines this shop carries. Both the colorways and the quality are very good... pricey, yes, but you get what you pay for. And... once I knit with quality yarn I could not "go back". My two favorites were the Fells Point colorway from SnallygasterFibers and Pel Mel from Yarn Hollow, both of which are becoming mittens of various designs. I had hoped to be in Baltimore for the PLY Party, so I could support the local artists, but wasn't able to make it. Looking forward to my next trip so I can get some more wonderful yarn. read more

A small shop but great variety and the owner is lovely. In addition to many indie yarns and some innovative Japanese yarns, they also have a few tried-and-true lines (from Berocco, Brown Sheep) in solid colors and some Opal sock yarn. Cute project bags and buttons. Plenty of needles. There is a small work table and chairs in the back and plenty of samples. The owner won me over immediately by welcoming me, encouraging me to "touch everything" and then letting me prowl around to my heart's content when she heard I was just browsing. First yarn shop I've been to in Baltimore. Very friendly, helpful staff, and a decent selection of yarns and other supplies. The woman at the counter happily wound my skeins into balls and asked about my project. She volunteered that the yarn I purchased felts very nicely. I will probably try to stop by Stitch N Bitch one Saturday. Downside: Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. read more

I took a beginners knitting class here and it was great! The instructor was very good at making sure everyone understood what she was teaching and went around to each of us while we practiced to make sure we had it right. I couldn't have asked for a better place to get introduced to the world of knitting. I had the kindest and most patient instructor for my weekend class. You will learn the basic knit stitch, how to cast on, and how to cast off. Because of time and the progress of your classmates you may not get the time to, explore at length, the purl stitch and other techniques but that is okay you will have what you need to start a project or perfect your skills once you leave.Signing up for the class was easy. The owner of the store was beyond helpful, she offered her assistance at every turn. The women at Lovely yarns are extremely knowledgeable about their craft. You feel taken care off. Once the class was over you were invited to come back for help, questions and for other knitting events they have at the shop. You did not feel like you were being sent on your way. Your Lovely yarn experience only ends after class if you want it to. read more

LOVE this place! I had a great experience here. I'm a beginner when it comes to knitting and the lady working there (wish I got her name) was so wonderful in helping me pick out a good yarn and a one-line pattern for my next project. She taught me how to measure my knitting gauge (which I didn't know existed). Lovelyarns has a wide variety of yarn (some dyed locally!) that is fairly priced, and I'd feel right at home going back to ask for help if needed. read more

Took a knitting class this past weekend and it was great! Mary was so helpful and offered to help at any time after the class. The owner was super friendly and helpful and you definitely feel welcome and at home here. Their selection of yarn was unlike anything you'd find at a chain store and of a much higher quality. A friend and I took knitting classes at this boutique after purchasing a LivingSocial deal. The class was perfect for beginners, but if you already have a beginners hand, the instructor will help you learn new techniques. She really encouraged everyone to go at their own pace for the learning process, which seemed to benefit all in the class. The classes are kept small to allow for more individualized instruction. The store itself has a great selection of yarns, and overall it was a very pleasant experience. read more

Not cool for beginners. The new shop is cute (though very poorly air conditioned during summer) and there is a good selection of nice yarn...BUT Lovely Yarn does not practice what it preaches and does not cater to beginner knitters. I took 3 different learn to knit classes (basic, hat, sock) and was told at each class to drop in anytime for assistance if I got stuck on a project. It took quite a car ride for me to "drop in" but I thought it would be worth it to get additional help because as a rank beginner I was easily and repeatedly stuck. It was late in the day when I arrived and store owner was brusque in her manner, initially she tried to assist but quickly became frustrated with me and told me I needed help with the basics and to sign up for another class! Ok..... I did and was again reassured that any time I was stuck to just pop in and I'd get lots of friendly help. Well I thought maybe the poor response l received the last time I dropped in was just a bad day/time so I dropped in a second time for help. Again I have to take quite a car trip to reach Lovely Yarn. After minimal assistance I was yet again brushed off by the owner and again instructed to "take another class". Lovely Yarn is NOT lovely by my standards. You know it is really not cool for the owner to repeatedly tell beginner knitters who pay to take classes at Lovely Yarn to "drop in anytime for help" if you aren't going to stand behind that commitment. I've signed up for knitting classes at close by Woolworks and won't be back to Lovely Yarn. Lovely Yarn has created itself some bad yarn karma. read more
