These are two of nine tipis on Interstate 90 known as "Whitwam's wigwams", designed by Ward Whitman, which are landmarks in South Dakota. They were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. They are a nod to Native American culture and reflect the area's history and original inhabitants. The Golden Spike will now be the only hotel we stay in during our yearly summer family vacations with our adult children & grandkids. I have already told many family & friends how great The Golden Spike is and that they should try it next time they are in the hills. I actually stayed that The Golden Spike when I was a kid, with my family, for the first several years it was opened, in the 1970s & spent most of my time in the outdoor pool. Not sure why it took me so long to decide to try it again after 45+ yrs, but we all loved it!! We have stayed at some good, and unfortunately, some bad (dirty, not updated) hotels & cabins in the hills over the years, but now we've found our forever hotel. Please continue to keep working hard in keeping up The GoldenSpike with new updates as needed and keeping it super clean. AND please don't ever get rid of your outdoor pool. We love & enjoyed it so much. They aren't many of them in the black hills. With Sturgis starting the week after our stay, there were so many huge trucks and trailers taking up multiple spots. Kids enjoyed the pools, that area was nice and clean.

I thought it was resolved the next day I get a charge for both nights. At very least we should get the second night since they knew over 24 hours that we're not coming. The other night because we were there- we were trying to fulfill reservation we made. Joe was rude. He initially said right dates the took it back when I was getting upset. Poor communication, rude and property needs updating and cleaning. Don't stay there!

I wish we'd known they do massages; I would have booked some for us, but maybe they don't offer those in the off-season. The downtown location is awesome, it's so close to restaurants, bars, and Moccasin Springs. We will absolutely stay here again!!

He gave me cash back. I said thank you. He obviously did not hear me because as I walked out the door, he sarcastically said "you're welcome" and I told him I said "thank you". He was rude and said, "oh, I didn't think you said thank you". DO NOT go here. There are other gas stations you can visit. Worst gas station experience ever.
