[[HIGHLIGHT]]Kylee, Patrick (PT), Tiffany, Maria, Brittany and Nick were genuinely caring nurses.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I had a UTI which meant I was literally pressing the call button every 15-30 minutes for assistance and yet [[HIGHLIGHT]]I never waited more than two minutes for someone to respond - cheerfully and with a kind smile.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] These folks sincerely care about the comfort of their patients and it makes all the difference. Honestly, if I could book a hotel stay here I'd do it! Oh and the food was really good; Tasty, top chef quality meals that I often wished I could order seconds. Care was fine, I just needed someone to look in my ear and confirm my fear that my eardrum was ruptured to help decide if I could scuba dive or not the next day. They could not, however, provide me pricing up front (as is required by Hospital Price Transperancy). I went through with the visit anyway and regretted the $2,000 bill for the 20 minutes I was there! $200 for for 1 antibiotic pill and $1,800 for just the visit to the ER. I understand ERs have to charge a lot to cover those that don't pay, but $1,800 just to be admitted!? read more

The narrow minded DEA would not allow for a replacement medication because of schedule rulings. I would now need to reschedule with no medication available. I get it these things shit happens. The scheduling asked me to come 30 minutes early. I could have come an hour later and still been on time. I was at the lower Keys Medical Center today and had a Colonoscopy. This was the first one I have ever had so I was a little concerned and I just didn't know what to expect. I was greeted by a wonderful young lady at the front counter she took my temperature and had me take a seat I waited for may be 10 minutes and a very nice young lady asked me to step around to the interview room and I did all of my paperwork. I was then sent to the second floor to where I was greeted by the most wonderful group of people that I have ever met. Lindsay was my nurse and she was just absolutely amazing. They walked me through every step of the procedure made sure I was very comfortable from the moment that I was greeted I knew everything was going to be OK. Dr. Lopez and his staff were absolutely the best! They joked with me, they gave me comfort and explained everything to me and the next thing I know I was waking up and waiting for my ride home. Let's start off with the fact as someone Who works in a hospital myself I will never ever go here again, nor will I ever recommend anyone on vacation especially if they are pregnant to go here. i came in with pain, I was about 5 weeks pregnant at the time. i was on vacation so that was the nearest hospital, to make it short and simple, the nurses were terrible, they messed up both my arms by leaving bruising because she kept poking on BOTH arms everywhere else but my vein, out of the almost 30 years I've been alive getting blood drawn I have NEVER FELT that pain. two you don't give microbid or any harmful uti medication to anyone in their first trimester, especially NOT that one. i had a sonogram first so they acknowledge how little along I was. ive had to go to the hospital on and off since then getting blood drawn and check up because I can't stop throwing up and using the bathroom in general. i asked the nurse if it causes nausea as soon as I swallowed it because I didn't feel good right away, she assured me it does not. when I saw my actual OB she explained everything in detail. This is why it's good to keep discharge papers and medical records! they really could of harmed my child for example with birth defects as you can even SEARCH that it causes these affect on a baby so it's recommended to give them these types of medications in the second trimester. horrible !! It was horrible I am nervous, I've been anxious and it is truly unfair to worry about yourself everyday your health and an unborn baby because they did not know HOW TO DO THEIR Job! read more

I found what I thought was breast cancer in rt breast, it was itching. Dr Sharon Ward ordered a mammogram and ultrasound, Rachel did my cxr Shana did my sentinel node and Dr. Shultz did the biopsy, it was positive. The lumpectomy was performed by Dr Rhoda Smith . My nurse was Bryan in ambulatory. I couldn't have been treated any kinder or more professional. And Tabitha did my usound! My results just came back that it had not spread! Thank you LKMC! I had an Ultrasound done at LKMC today. From the receptionist at check in to the Ultrasound Tech I have to say they were all wonderful.

If this wasn't a hospital I wouldn't recommend it but if you need help, go. Should also mention this is the hospital for the Navy kinda sad they don't have there own hospital like everywhere else... and how small this place is for being one of the only places you can go. Here are some things you should know.. the parking is terrible. The fact the doctor parking takes to the ENTIRE front crow to the hospital is insane you will be walking if there der any spaces at all. The whole checkin process is atrocious, don't expect the front desk people to be friendly or helpful, they are always annoyed and talk really low so when you ask them to repeat themselves they get an attitude with you. After you struggle to check in don't expect to sit anywhere because there is a handful of chairs, and always a ton of people. They take you back to evaluate you and even if you have a serious problem (my 4 year old had a concussion) they don't hurry worth anything to get you back and seen by a doctor. So you go back out and wait for what seems like forever while you can hear and see staff laughing and talking and eating. During shift change every nurse that walked in looked around and rolled their eyes as if they were annoyed they had to do their job. Once you go back it makes sense because the ER has ONLY 8 beds, and no rooms just one big room with curtains. The area is very dirty, the curtains around the beds were stained like crazy, it smelt so bad. The amount of people in the ER that we're on their phones and on FaceTime was crazy, and pretty rude seeing as how some of us are actually sick and would like some quite, so don't except to be comfortable or have it nice and quite or even dark, it's very bright. The doctor we had was fine, she was fine explained everything well. The wait time to see her and after to get out discharge papers took forever, as well. Over all it's less then 1 star but if you need an ER it's your only place to go. read more

I have had two procedures here, a endoscopy and a colonoscopy and the staff was excellent, especially the nurses. I was in and out in two hours! I also had my son there once for an emergency room visit and they were very quick and kind as well. Thank you, glad to have such a facility close by. read more

It's like having hospital care in a construction zone. Literally. I had major surgery but had to go back and forth after recovery until the construction guys had it done enough for a patient. And then there was the continuing construction noise that day and the next. The results of the construction will still be crowded, so non-ergonomic patient rooms. I have an MRI scheduled today, later in the afternoon. Imaging phoned me this morning and said that there was another appointment slot open earlier in the afternoon. I did not write it down and so I called back to confirm the time. I waited on hold and when someone came onto the line, they could not help me. They gave me an extension so I could talk imaging. I called and when I used the extension, the robot operator told me that it did not recognize that number. I'm not calling back. No one can confirm the time, so I'll just stick to the original time I was given. I would like to get it over sooner, but that's not an option. I'm so tired of calling LKMC. read more

The recorded message (no matter when I call) says they will call back in 24 hours. No one ever calls. I've even had my wife call for a few days. Lower Keys Medical Center's ER team and other staff was the BEST when my 89 yr old mother was brought in recently. They were all very attentive, transparent, compassionate, and accommodating to Mom and my family. This helped tremendously in an otherwise stressful situation. I am staying here on vacation and happened to pass a kidney stone. I rushed here this morning and was helped immediately after filling out some paperwork. My tech, nurse, and doctor were all so helpful and very nice. I was given morphine almost immediately and was taken for a cat scan. The tech for the cat scan was also so nice and friendly. Only reason I am not giving this place five stars is because it's under construction. The whole place really needs to be finished and add some landscaping to make this place less scary looking. read more

I am shocked to see that this hospital is only ranked 2.5 out of 5 stars. First, a brief background on me. Due to a chronic disease, I have had over 100 full sleep surgeries, 500+ nights in the hospital, 350+ imaging studies and all of this has probably taken place at a good 25+ hospitals over my lifetime. I know hospitals very well. I've spent considerable time at the best and the worst. What sets LKMC apart is it's people. The people will make or break any healthcare organization. Simply put, they care here. They really care a lot. The nursing staff has the amazing ability to become your friend in addition to your caregiver. The doctors that they contract with - at least the ones I've encountered - have been phenomenal. I am coming up on my fourth night in and will likely be discharged tomorrow. There has been no rush to get me out of the door (which, if you didn't know, insurance carriers are always fighting with the hospital to try to get them to discharge you), as I have a very high WBC that will only reduce with a ton of IV antibiotics. While I have recovered wonderfully from my surgery - and already feel better than I have in quite some time - they are keeping me longer than the type of surgery I had would normally call for because of the infection. One thing that I noticed is that the nightime charge nurse for my unit, Dalys (love her name; pronounced just like the city!), actually nurses. In many hospitals, the charge nurse position is more administrative in nature. It's a reward for years of grueling work and being the best at it. I believe Dalys told me she has been in nursing for 47 or 48 years. That is incredible. She's been doing it forever and runs around like she's been doing it for a decade. She has true passion for what she does and it is evident. Leadership starts from the top and it is clear that her excellent leadership has trickled down to all areas of the unit. They are very quick here. I went from ER to bed within a few hours when it became apparent from a CT scan that surgery was inevitable. Within one hour of final tests coming back and the decision being finalized that I needed surgery, a surgical bay was made available for me and I was being operated on within an hour and a half of a decision being made. Except in emergency circumstances, larger hospitals, which is where I have most of my experience as a patient, cannot provide such fast turnaround. They really listen here. The thing is that I've had over 500 days in the hospital. Over 100 surgeries. I know which drugs work and don't work. I'm pretty much always in for the same one or two things. One sensitive area to always talk about is pain medication. If you know too much about what works, then you can very easily be labeled a drug seeker and written off to never get that relief you desperately need. It's happened to me plenty of times. My issue is that morphine metabolizes (for me, at least) in roughly 15 minutes. Contrast that with Dilaudid, which lasts a two solid hours in my system. It also happens to be the strongest (or close to it), so they are rightfully hesitant to administer it. Asking for it out of the gate makes you look suspicious. However, the medical experts here weighed the request properly. They took into consideration my hospitalizations and came to the conclusion of yeah, I've been given everything under the sun, so what I say works best probably works best. Now, let's talk about something where most hospital utterly fail. The food. The food here is amazing. Since it's a smaller hospital, you have two choices for each meal (rather than the larger menu system found at larger hospitals), however there is always an option for a picky eater like myself (I like hamburgers, pizza, etc. and have the taste buds of a four year old). They even give you the good lettuce here, none of that iceberg lettuce. That's something else I've noticed. A lot of the people who work here have been here decades. I'm sure part of it is that you get to live in one of the most beautiful places in America (the reason I moved here) and your options for a hospital on a small island are exactly one. Having said that, I do not think people would stay in one place for 20, 30, 40 or even more years unless it were a good organization. Yes, I gave this hospital 5 stars and mean it. Has everything been absolutely perfect 100% of the time? Of course not. Things go wrong. Sometimes you wait longer than your body would like for pain meds. Just like when food servers get in the weeds and overwhelmed and can't catch up, it happens in nursing, too. Which is how I had to pleasure of speaking with Dalys in length - she's out on the floor trying to get everybody caught up. However, for me a lot of it is intent. It's not for lack of anybody trying. Sometimes it's just busy. What I know for certain is that nobody is ever out there slacking and that's what is important to me. I don't expect everything to be perfect, always. Nobody should. read more

This is the best experience I've had, front desk, nurses, assistants, OR nurses, anesthesiologist etc. I flew to Miami from San Antonio Tx to have surgery, due to a cardiac episode in 2014, they considered me high risk at the clinic in Miami, so they changed the dr and he only operates at the clinic in Miami and Lower Keys Medical Center. That's why I had to drive from Miami to Key West. Everybody friendly and very professional. My nurses, excellent, very kind and considerate. The IV didn't hurt at all! I found myself at Lower Keys Medical Centre early in March, coming off a cruise ship with appendicitis. The ambulance arrived at the cruise ship really quickly and delivered me to the hospital. The whole experience was excellent. I was attended to in the ER quickly and competently by all concerned. I was sent for CAT scan to confirm diagnosis of appendicitis and the surgeon met me even before getting back to the ER. I arrived at the hospital around 3 and was in surgery by 8pm. The nursing staff who cared for me overnight and the next morning were excellent and very caring. I can't complain about the excellent care I received. read more

I've read the reviews and was a bit concerned when taking my husband to the LKMC. My 82 year old husband fell down a couple of stairs dropping like a rock. He fell on his left side hitting his head, arm and ribs on a hard tile floor. Dazed and confused, we got him up into a chair. His head was bleeding which we patched up immediately. We should have taken him straight away to the hospital, but didn't because he said he was fine and didn't want to go. The Super Bowl was on TV. As the evening progressed, he was becoming very sore and the bruising and pain was setting in. The next morning, I took him to the Truman Medical Center who immediately told us to go the LKMC. They weren't able to help as he needed a cat scan of his head because he is on blood thinners. There was potential cause for brain bleed. Scary... ...we then drove to LKMC. My husband was registered and in the ER patient room in under ten minutes. The physician assistants came examined and asked all of the expected questions. Immediately ordered the cat scan and gave us a little scolding that if a head injury of any kind happens while on blood thinners, get to the ER immediately. Lesson learned. In the end, there was no damage - the ribs and left arm/wrist were badly bruised with hematoma and a very serious black eye that all have gotten worse before it's going to get better. Tara and Diane, Troyce and Bobbie were of the utmost professionals and a very friendly team in the ER. Everyone was caring and comforting. They tested and treated his injuries, gave us instructions and an education that we badly needed regarding blood thinners. We give the LKMC ER team the highest regards for their efforts. It's no Mayo Clinic, but good for a non trauma, surgical medical facility. The lobby and admitting personnel are lacking, but the doctors and nurses were very personable and professional. Not a lot of staff on hand though - seemed to be only about 5 people on shift at 10pm. They also have a life flight / medivac helicopter on standby if something more serious needs to be elevated to Miami. read more

December 14-15-16 -17 2016 I was admitted to this hospital that has been in the news so much lately. I had been at the urgent care center. I was full of gall stones and had a huge gall bladder. The ER doctor got me stabilized asked that I return the next day after observation and I was scheduled for surgery after the office of Dr Blass was contacted. To say I was scared is an understatement. I found every single person I was in contact with very caring and helpful during a frightening event for me. Because I was heavily sedated part of the time I cannot recall all the names. It was closer to being at a restful smiling spa than a hospital. If i could give zero stars I would. I hurt myself in 2010 and required stitches. I accidentally gave the wrong insurance card. I remedied the situation once they alerted me, yet they have sold my 'debt' to no less than 5 collection agencies. I even settled with one of the agencies so as not to have the mark on my credit report, yet here we are almost 9 years later and I just got a new letter from a 6th collection agency. This is a matter of 13 stitches in my thumb. I would rather bleed out next time than ever go back. read more

This was not a good emergency room experience. The doctors were not supportive of breastfeeding with regard to what pain medication I could take, and I had to convince them to lend me a breast pump and supplies during the 8 hours I was there. Then when I got the bills for my visit, I realized that every function of the hospital (radiology, xrays, doctor, etc) were billed to separate companies, most of which did not bill my insurance first. So I got a bunch of huge bills that went to collection while I sorted everything out. There isn't much alternative, but I would avoid this place if at all possible. read more

While on vacation, my husband had a heart episode that lead to an ambulance admission to the Lower Keys Medical Center ER. We are both educated and older, and unfortunately my husband has had other heart and stroke episodes in recent years. Prior experience gave us a basic understanding of what was happening. We also tried to be polite and cooperative. Unfortunately, this was my husbands 19th hospitalization in 10 years, and the worst ER experience we have ever had. Though the ambulance personnel were perfect, once in the ER, the doctor was dismissive and impatient, including eventually bragging that he himself did not like doctors and hadn't even had a physical in nearly 20 years. Despite the loss of feeling and movement in his left side, the doctor never touched him or did any basic testing for stroke symptoms. My husband could barely communicate, but the doctor did not want me to respond to his questions. The doctor did not even want his medication list, since we weren't able to access it until we had been in the ER for about an hour. The attending nurse was no better, and equally abrupt and dismissive. Fortunately, I was able to reach our regular cardiologist and general provider out of state, and they guided us through our options. Given that we chose to be discharged to get to more competent providers, the discharge papers said he was diagnosed with "Generalized Anxiety", which was extremely dismissive for someone with heart pain, loss of left side movement, and a history of stents and bypass surgery. read more

I previously wrote a review in April of 2017 about the billing problems I was having with the hospital. Let me clarify that it is now almost two years since I was at the hospital and the drama continues. The billing dept originally charged me for a stay at the hospital and I never left the emergency room. I disputed the charges. After speaking several ( and I do mean several) times with the billing department, and assuring me they would fix, they sent my file to collections. I was (to say the least) not happy. I get a hold of them and almost end up back in the hospital trying to make them understand their mistake (they kept telling me they didn't understand my issue..oy yoi yoi)...Okay, finally get someone who ASSURES me they understand and please, we promise we will fix the problem....and yes, my friends, two months later a collection agency contacts me to tell me they are coming after me again. Are you kidding me. Again I call.....I am a lunatic on the phone, but can you imagine going through this? At this point its almost a year. All this started with a visit in April of 2016. Finally, again in September of 2017 they assure me its fixed and I will no longer hear from them. I just got the mail (Jan, 2018) and guess what......another bill...but they did fix the problem and now they say I owe them what was left after the insurance paid. I was very hesitant to have any procedure done at this hospital due to some of the feedback I had heard. I needed to have a shoulder manipulation with Dr. Bensen, and my whole experience at this hospital was fabulous. From the pre-check in call to the check in to the nurse who knew I was afraid of needles to the anesthesiologist and then my doctor was all awesome I would highly recommend this hospital in the future. read more
