Lower Table Rock with Mnt. McLaughlin
    Naomi K.

This is a great easy hike with gorgeous views of the surroundings and on sunny days a perfect view of Mount McLaughlin. It's a bit out of the way from downtown Medford (but then what isn't) to the east of Eagle Point, near the Rogue River. It's easy to get to (plenty of well marked signs) easy parking (no fees) and a decent hike (not too strenuous to get to the top and views along the way.) There are restrooms at the beginning of the trail, but none elsewhere, and no water, so bring your own hydration and its a great place to eat lunch at the top. During spring is the best time to visit, so you can see all the wildflowers in bloom. Plenty of signage allows you to identify the types of flowers. Also saw a few other wildlife critters, squirrels, woodpeckers, salamanders and a fox running by. Plus there's vernal pools with brine and tadpoles. There's some history about John Day and his airstrip at the top and there are docent lead hikes on particular days. Call the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) to find out more info. There is also hiking on Upper Table Rocks as well.

One of my favorite hikes so far. Great workout going up and definitely going down!! My calves and legs are still sore. Definitely worth it. Awesome view while hiking up and once you get to the top! You'll see rattlesnakes, wild turkey and vultures. Diverse range of plants also. Some areas are easy and moderate hikes but there are some that are very steep. Love this place.

Though the river is known for its rapids up near Grants Pass, this section is mostly placid with one section of faster water that the little fishing motor boat we saw had no problem with. The dirt, mostly single track trail runs fairly close to the river, with access points for fisherman or fun like throwing rocks into the water. There were plenty of birds to view. We saw one mountain bike and and some sections of the trail had clearly been travelled by horses. There was one groomed loop that was an interpretive trail, with numbered stations but no info. It just may be too early in the season to get maps at entry since the booth was unmanned when we entered the large parking lot. A good time was had by all, including the dogs, though they came home with DOZENS of ticks so be careful out there.

Other visitors behind us just ignored the ticket booth without consequence. Once we paid and entered the Park we noted 75+% of the grassy/picnic areas were unusable due to being showered by sprinkler system - thus all visitors were uncomfortably squished together in the few dry spots available. The watering system went on-and-on for about an hour and a half. Thus a giant F/U shout-out is due the OR State Park workers who are either too stupid, too lazy, or just plain so inconsiderate to be bothered to handle their park maintenance chores like watering outside of the middle of the afternoon when the Park usage is at it's peak. And note there are two sets of restrooms in the Park - both apparently permanently closed. Instead there are portable units with no running water. So your $5 entry fee is paying for what, exactly? Too bad this place is so poorly managed. It could and should be a community asset. Instead it's just another example of poorly run government. BTW - when the Park employees did come around to finally shut off the spinklers (some of which watered the parking lot as much as the grass) - they didn't bother to do anything else (like check to make sure folks paid the entry fee, or pick up any trash, or bother to check if patrons were complying with Park Rules re alcohol, etc). What a waste of a resource...

I picked the largest pine cones, hidden in hubby's hoodie (I didn't have a bag), to experiment on. The Magnolia tree greeted us, as we entered the park, was in full bloom. I think it's scented, too! My favorite about this park, was the playground. I spent more time swinging with the youngest grandson, and watching him and his 8 years old playmate (friends since toddlers), and walking around to the nearest creek & bridge. If it wasn't feeling like about to rain, we could have stayed much longer! Oh, they also have to drive back to Portland, today, so off they go, and we stayed longer.

We were wrapping up a Thanksgiving weekend at the time of our visit so leaves have fallen and they may have experienced some rain. It wasn't too chilly, the sun was out and so were the locals (and visitors like us). Lithia Park is a historic park and has combinations of woodland, ponds, gardens, and gorgeous Italian-style fountains. It's no wonder the park has been named the Crown Jewel of Ashland. The park is huge! Lithia Park is located in a lush forested area and also has hiking trails but we didn't go that far. Wow, and I didn't know this but, the park is also a source of Lithia Mineral Water. The park was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Review #3266

Other playgrounds in the area seemed sketchy so we found this one and gave it a try. We were pleasantly surprised by how clean and well maintained it was. The playground is amazing and has so many different components to keep the kids occupied. FYI there is a $5 park fee and it's cash only. They should probably make the system an electronic system since many people don't carry cash anymore.

I played early July and almost all of the streams and ponds were dried up, but come spring, I could see this adding an extra layer of difficulty to this already extremely challenging course. All holes are very well marked and offer two tee boxes and two or 3 hole placements. Hole 13 in particular was the longest and the pin placement wasn't on the sign, it must have been an extra 250' past the long pin. There is an old dam/bridge/wall that has a bunch of cool graffiti on it adding to the ambiance of the course. Nice flowing river on the south end of the park. Overshoot 18 and your disc could roll down into the water and be toast! Costs $5 for a day pass, well worth the price of admission!
