This spot has been cleared, cleaned, and creatively deconstructed to be exactly what it is. I attended a documentary screening here once, for, Who Is Bozo Texino? The film was about old school locomotive graffiti done in the early and mid 20th Century by boxcar stowaways and rail-yard workers. The movie was projected on one of the brick side walls here. Very cool. This space was utilized during the actual filming of 2006's Factory Girl starring Sienna Miller, and Guy Pearce, as Andy Warhol. Hayden Christensen, Jimmy Fallon, and Jack Huston also starred. Right next door is the site of the former 516 Soundstage (Itself, a former Woolworth's-"And stay outta the Woolworth's!!") where a plethora of bands played in the early aughts (2000's). Shreveport skate band, I Wrestled A Bear Once, went from obscure local band, to an international sensation in this very neighboring building. Other bands that passed through those doors: Statues Cry Bleeding, The Infamous Jaguar Shark, Thursday, and Hatebreed. Also located within short walking distance from here is the statue (speaking of statues, right?) of legendary local blues man, Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter (see my Yelp review! : ) ) So, as you can see, yes, this is just a space, but it has vast potential and tons of history whereas most passer-bys will just see nothing.

Around you go to finish where you started. You could spend all day here learning about the history of Louisiana through the informative dioramas, the artifacts, and the historical paintings. It is amazing. The dioramas each represent a way of life, a major event, an industry. or a period in history. It is like watching a historical movie, only nothing is moving. It is free!

It was an excellent opportunity to learn more about the state. The building is beautiful and the exhibits consists of a bunch of amazing dioramas among other things. We were really impressed and spent an ample amount of time viewing the exhibits. I had no idea that salt mining was a thing in Louisiana and enjoyed learning more about it. I'd love to stop by again if I'm back in the area.

Secondly, a lot of the older cool science things needed some tlc. Like the pull yourself up clearly need some love and wd40 and the spin the tire and sit on a stool wasn't working. So it seemed like several of the older science experiments we wanted to show our kids just kept being a bust. However; they still have a lot of fun stuff to do here and if you're under 8 they have the great little village play thing on the second floor! But they could clean those toys in there a little better, my hands felt gross touching all the toys my kids brought me.. Overall it's still a great place! Just turn up the AC a tad and give the place a little more care!

I have a vintage film camera that's special to me and my husband, we took it all around Europe together, even into the Louvre! I hadn't planned on taking any pictures (it doesn't even have a flash on it it's very old) but I didn't want to leave it in the car because the heat can ruin the film. I got snapped at and had to leave it in a closet at the front. Then when we left, "oh, you can't take that camera in the gardens either". Dude. Let me tell you something, "art gallery" of Shreveport, you are not that special. Whatever art you have here, is not worth being so obnoxiously pompous that people never want to come back. You are a tiny cockroach of the art world. And reading other reviews where you've been so protective of it that it turns people off from actually enjoying anything, large groups and little kids, makes it even less special. A simple "no photography allowed, sorry" would be enough to let me know I can't use my camera. My camera that took a photo of the Mona Lisa but can't be allowed NEAR whatever motel art y'all have. Just a mere few weeks after 9/11/01, this city hosted its' annual Fall Festival, the Red River Revel. And during this particular year, the Gypsy Songman himself, Jerry Jeff Walker was to be headlining one of the Saturday nights. My chums and I, all huge, adoring Jerry Jeff fans, went to the show in full vigor. I myself, consuming what was pretty much my own body weight at that time, in draft beer, during each and every song, and after show's end, then venturing to a local tavern across town, where I would ultimately end up unconscious, and seeking the comforts, spread eagle no less, of said tavern's convenient outdoor parking, and the asphalt thereof. And this, only after regurgitating some of my stomach's contents into an empty pint glass, inside said tavern. Then there was July 4th, 2005. It was the night before my Father passed away. I sat in my Father's hospital room, and he, on his death bed. The television hanging on the wall, was tuned in to a local station, which was broadcasting live from this very park, for its' annual Independence Day celebration. And on this night, at this very sad moment, I remember sitting in that chair in that room, my Father resting, and looking up at that television screen, and seeing all the people, all the visitors to the park that day, families, and couples. As the camera panned the large crowd, hundreds, maybe thousands of faces. They all looked so happy. So carefree. Life was so beautiful for them. I was going through one of the worst times of my life. And then, down at the festivities, the recorded voice of Louie Armstrong, and his song, "What A Wonderful World" began playing. I could hear it on tv. My Father remained asleep peacefully. I just began crying. Of course, there are other memories of this park, less heavy, and not as important maybe. I remember another Red River Revel, years later. Where I jumped up on stage with local band Dirtfoot and showed all forward looking eyeballs my latest and greatest dance maneuvers, as interpreted from the music the band was playing. This delighted both my future wife and festival security immensely. There have also been countless enjoyable viewings of outdoor films here courtesy of Movies and Moonbeams. Recently, this park was deluged with waters from the adjacent Red River, and suffered extensive damage. In recent months, as festival seasons have come and gone, this area has not been available or open. It appears now that most, if not all, repairs, as well as planned upgrades, are now complete. Hopefully, this park will once again become the focal point of all activity and highlights during festivals, as well as day to day downtown recreation.
