I had a really disappointing experience at Lucky Cafe. We ordered pho, and honestly, none of the dishes at the table were good. My friend and I both ended up not eating ours at all. The meat tasted like it had been sitting for a while and then reheated it was rubbery, tough, and had that old, off flavor. The broth was also a huge letdown. Pho is supposed to be rich, aromatic, and full of depth, but this one had almost no flavor at all. I even asked ahead of time if the soup would include cartilage, which is usually part of a proper pho, and was told yes, but it wasn't there. What really concerned me was finding fruit flies in the soup. That raised serious questions about cleanliness and food handling, especially if soups are being left uncovered. One thing that also stood out was that, although this is presented as a Vietnamese restaurant, the kitchen staff did not appear to be Vietnamese. While anyone can cook any cuisine, authenticity and attention to traditional flavors really matter, and based on the taste of the food, that authenticity seemed to be missing. When the bill came, I calmly explained everything, expecting at least some acknowledgment or effort to make it right, but nothing meaningful was done. Late night at the local school so decided to stop and get Mi some Babn Mi. Ambiance is nice here. Just a small little shop with nice wall decorations consisting of various Asian instruments. Classy piano music playing in the background like an old 40's film. My first observation was that the chargrilled pork bahn mi was light. No heft. I think they use a Kroger type hoagie roll too. Had the look, feel and taste of one. Not the good bahn mi bread that a traditional Vietnamese store would use. Sadly there was not much meat in the bun either. For $11 after tax and tip, that's just really disappointing. If you read their history on Yelp (by owner "Sergio M" - doesn't sound very Vietnamese) it talks about a family owned and operated shop. Our family has been to Lucky Cafe off and on over the years. Recently I stopped in to try the beef Banh Mi and related items--we've stuck to their Chinese menu in the past. I also got the chargrilled pork spring rolls and a Vietnamese coffee. The best part about the Banh Mi was the bread--they use a very crusty french roll, perhaps one of the best I have had. It really makes the sandwich. The other ingredients were good, though I did have to help it out with some hoisin sauce (provided at the table). At only $6.75 this is a great deal, I would get it again any time. The spring rolls were very substantial and filling. Two large rolls with a generous serving of peanut dipping sauce. Perhaps a bit more chewy than spring rolls I've had before, but they are all chewy and in the end it ate fine. The Vietnamese coffee was a good representation, very sweet and creamy. I forgot to ask about fish sauce for the banh mi and spring rolls, and I missed it. I'm used to having fish sauce come with the meal. You should ask for it if you get the banh mi. The place was quite busy for a Saturday lunchtime. They have an established clientele and don't really need boosting. The strip mall and restaurant are old and have a lived-in feeling that is pretty attractive for me. The restaurant is well decorated and has one not-very-obtrusive TV. The restrooms (identical but gendered) were clean and ready, and the decor from the dining room carried over. I'd come back. read more

This place has been a staple for The Woodlands community for Vietnamese food - the head chef's grandson, Benny, was one of our servers today and stated that they have been in business here since 1979! They have great service and great food here. I had the lemon grass beef bun and stir fried flat noodles combo plate and both had really fresh ingredients, great flavor, large portion sizes, and well cooked! The flat noodles were tender and crispy at the same time and had a good amount of fresh veggies and variety of pork, chicken, and shrimp. The lemon grass beef was flavorful and the egg roll was nice and crispy. Our servers checked on us multiple times and were very polite and patient with our large group today! My 9 months old review to this place has gone down to 1 Star. Sorry but not sure why I often had miss served each time last 3 times I have gone to picky up my food. I really like that this place is Mom and Pop own since has some how became word of mouth popular; it also has a hit and miss or more like going down hill moment for me. It's quality has gone down terribly several times i ordered to go. My usual combination has terrible cucumber old soar taste to it. We placed our order at 7:20 and waited until 7:45 for a simple bowl of pho w/ meatballs. Slowest pho restaurant I've ever dined in. The meat in the chicken spring rolls were dry and the noodles in the soup were clumped together as it falls apart into little pieces when forced apart. Is this place under new Ownership? I have to admit when I walked in was was greeted by two Middle Eastern (or East European) gentlemen. And saw the food being brought out by a Hispanic man. Note: They were very friendly, hospitable and helpful. But the Pho was delicious. The broth had an up front flavor of palm sugar. With an undercurrent of Star Anise. Very rich beefy too. Loaded with scallions and shallots. And most importantly served BOILING HOT! Thinly sliced beef was good (needed more fatty slices to be great) and was plentiful for the price. $14. I agree with other comments the noodles broke apart (over cooked). Bean sprouts and Basil fresh. Cilantro had seen better days. In an old (1970s) original Woodlands strip mall. And has not been renovated since. But yes was clean and orderly Given its connivence to where I live, I will visit again when mood for Pho strikes. Finding Asian food in The Woodlands has mostly been a losing game since we moved to town, but Lucky Cafe was one of few places that seemed to know how to put out a decent plate in terms of taste and authenticity. Lucky Cafe is located on a small strip mall and draws fairly little attention to itself from the outside but as soon as you walk in, a whiteboard announces the specials of the day and the invitation to "seat yourself wherever you'd like". On a random weekday afternoon, the place had a fair number of couples and larger parties dining in and we took this to be a good sign. Another positive portent was the Vietnamese iced coffee, a traditional blend of French drip coffee and condensed milk. Here, this cool beverage is a lovely blend of caffeinated punch with just enough sweetness to take the edge off. We were off to a good start. The menu encompasses most of the expected Viet fare, with healthy space on the pages dedicated to vegetarians. Of course, I took advantage and ordered a vegetarian noodle bowl, which comes as an enormous steaming bowl of broth with a heap of rice noodles, assorted vegetables, and chunks of tofu. Raw bean sprouts, jalapeño slices, herbs, and fragrant kaffir lime leaves are brought on the side for customers to add or neglect as they please, and the typical assortment of sauces on the table finish off the customization of this template meal. I made good use of the Sriracha sauce to kick up the broth, which may have started out a little bland but quickly adopted the spice and salt of the hot sauce to make for a more than decent meal. Service was attentive from start to finish and our food emerged from the kitchen with surprising rapidity (seriously, had we timed it, I doubt it would have been more than seven minutes) and closing out our check simply required a short walk up to the counter. Also ordered the Vietnamese coffee and I had to throw away after 2 sips too many. I don't think they know how to make it. I've had bad coffee before, but this was undrinkable. Upon entry we were told to sit anywhere. The place was kind of empty, so we choose our seats against the wall. Or order was taken at about 12:55pm. I mention this because it's now 1:32pm and we still are without our meal. I ordered the lemon grass chicken and my companion ordered a beef phô soup. These are standard fare and should not take this long . Especially when there are not many patrons in the restaurant. Also I only saw two small take out orders in this time frame. I notice others also are without their food. A man at another table just made the comment: "I could have ordered a pizza. They'll guarantee delivery within 30 minutes!" Indeed. So, after nearly 40 minutes, we asked about our order and was promised that it was coming. But we told them to keep it and left. There's just no excuse for such poor service. read more

I hate leaving bad reviews but since my daughter and I both got sick from the food I feel I must write this. In the past I have had food from here and enjoyed with no problems. But last night we ordered the vegetable pho, chicken pho, and shrimp spring rolls. Which my daughter and I both ate. My husband did not get sick because he didn't want to eat his beef pho which he found disgusting cause the beef was completely raw!!! It's rare to find affordable and authentic anything in the Woodlands, but I'm glad I found this place. Now, granted this restaurant is a liiiitle dark and slightly gloomy, but I like to refer to it as a hole-in-the-wall gem. It's better to just order takeout and eat in the comfort of your home anyway. The wonton and egg noodle soup is just the best, tasty and large portion. I remember the service wasn't great last year and I almost considered not coming back, but they might have changed staff in the past couple of months; they're much more welcoming and professional now. I honestly don't understand the recent reviews that aren't all that great. I have a reasonable amount of experience with authentic Vietnamese restaurants and I almost didn't give it a chance despite it being just down the street from my new home in The Woodlands. I obviously didn't try everything on the menu but the everything I did have was delicious. That included the fried spring rolls, fresh spring rolls with grilled pork and traditional pho. Their pho was actually some of the best I've ever had, and that includes in LA, Chicago and down near the Vietnamese fishing communities in southern Louisiana. We also had some great Vietnamese coffee to finish everything off. I wholeheartedly encourage everyone in the local area to give it a try. As a quick additional note I went for dinner so I can't comment on how this place is at lunch time. At the very least, go for dinner! read more

I get Vietnamese food in New Orleans and this was just as good as over there from Little Vietnam Village in New Orleans East. Prices are cheap and portion good! I've been coming to this restaurant since it first opened and I still remember the original owners. The food back then was very good, fresh, and tasty. How unfortunate that this restaurant has gone so downhill. They describe it as "family owned authentic vietnamese". This is not authentic vietnamese and I dont think it has been for a long time. I ordered the vegetarian plate and I got a couple of very chewy and chunky fake pork. Some of it very un-ediable and then the rest stale rice that they probably left overnight. I also ordered vegetarian dumpling for my kids and it was oily to the point it was dripping as soon as they bite into it. I was thankful I did the vegetarian and not the beef. My other family order the garlic tofu and the tofu has a strange frozen taste to it. The rice was worst because it was completely stale and cold. It was just a terrible lunch. The service was also very lukewarm and unfriendly. Overall I would not come here nor would i recommend this place. There are so many vietnamese restaurants that is a lot better than this. Its just sad how downhill they have gotten since the original owners. read more

We were very disappointed in the service, food and slowness of the kitchen. I had the Charbroiled pork vermicceli which was practically flavorless and definitely not chargrilled. We also ordered smoothies but didn't get them until halfway through the meal because the waiter didn't remember them. Another surprising disappointment was that we noticed while they cleared the plates, they did not wipe down the tables until later in the evening, so people were coming in and sitting at tables that had not been wiped. First impression was my last. I will NOT be back nor will I recommend this place to anyone. Two of my orders was wrong. Online it states that rice was 75 cents extra to make a change to fried rice.
