We had just driven in from a few days in Tofino, and I realized I hadn't really packed anything too appropriate for a conference with my coworkers and colleagues. Oops. Emergency dress shopping time! Sometimes, I am afraid to step foot into adorable boutiques, because I am borderline plus-size and often feel like I'm being judged a la Pretty Woman in this type of shop. This was a refreshing experience! The owner helped me pick out lots of adorable things to try on, most of them fit, and I ended up with two fabulous dresses that are now wardrobe regulars, as well as the most comfortable pair of bamboo leggings I could have ever imagined. I strongly considered going back after the conference to buy them in different colors and lengths. I had to hold myself back from all the gorgeous accessories and jewelery on offer, but it did make me a little sad. But I ended up in what I can only describe as a full-blown carrot cake standoff. I purchased a slice of carrot cake, only to discover, once home, that it contained shredded coconut. I loathe coconut. The texture is unmistakable to anyone who's ever had it (and hates it). So I drove back the next day and politely asked if I could swap it for something else, not a refund, just a coconut-free treat. What followed was like something out of a sitcom. The staff convened a mini tribunal. The cake was taken behind closed doors and inspected. I was assured that the recipe ONLY contained walnuts (and was not to believe my own eyes - and taste buds). I was even handed a new slice and told, confidently, "No coconut here." I opened the box and pointed right at the flecks of the offending ingredient. Still - the manager insisted: "That's walnut." Spoiler alert: it wasn't. The level of denial was surreal. What could've been a simple, friendly interaction instead turned defensive and weirdly authoritarian. No accountability. No flexibility. Just "take it or leave it" and I left with less respect for a business I truly wanted to support. This isn't just about taste. It's about trust. If staff don't know what's in their own products (or worse, deny what's clearly there), it raises concerns for anyone with dietary sensitivities or allergies. I tried to call customer service to let them know what happened and sat on hold for just over 5 minutes before I hung up and tried to reach the deli department. They answered the phone after quite a while and IMMEDIATELY hung up. Just picked up the phone and set it down. That is what made me so mad. I tried customer service again and same thing, no answer just waiting on hold. Finally I called the bakery. I figured they're at least close enough to the deli that they can at least run over and let them know they have spoilt sausages mixed in with the good ones. Thank you bakery!
