Two of my boys ages 5 & 3 go to Lucy School full-time, they both love and adore everyone at the school. Our 2 year old attends "Little Lucy" on Friday's, which is a great way to introduce your little one to the school and get ready for the program. The school has very loving, caring and supportive teachers in every way possible. Lucy School promotes outside play, imagination, and allowing our kids to be "kids". If it's not too cold or stormy, you can guarantee the kids will be outside playing. They utilize everything around from their fenced backyard, swings, woods, water, and animals housed at nearby farms to help the imagination of the kids grow more each day. I am so satisfied with Lucy school, the teachers are dedicated to the kids. Their efforts expose to the kids by good environments, imagination, creative, and else. They sometimes use America sign language during songs before going to start school. Many teachers now some of ASL. It is neat. read more

The Lucy School has been an amazing environment for our son to learn and grow as an individual. When he was in Pre-K, the teachers took the time to help him develop both his intellect, as well as his ability to interact with the other children in his class. They helped him learn to respect, share, show compassion and encourage other children in his class. In kindergarten, the teachers helped our son learn to express himself through his artwork and through encouragement to build his self confidence to perform in front of others. In first grade, our son learned to excel in reading, science and mathematics. Their unique approach to mathematics was different from what I learned back in the 1980's but is apparently far more comprehendible for a young mind, as my son is ages ahead of where I was in public school at his age. The small class size has also helped to expedite our son's reading comprehension as children are split-out into reading groups with other children in their class at a similar skill level. That way those who need additional assistance from the teacher can get that assistance without the other students losing interest or goofing off. In second grade, our son has continued to thrive at The Lucy School. His excitement about going to school and sharing what he has learned is so different from what I recall of my experience as a child in the public school system. The emphasis on drama and the arts are fascinating to me as my early childhood education contained virtually no drama or artistic expression during school hours. I'm continually impressed with the teaching staff at The Lucy School, both by their dedication to their students during the school day and also the time they put in outside of the typical school day to send detailed emails to parents to let them know about things going on in their children's classroom and around the school campus. I contacted Lucy and visited. It was a lot out of the box, but I liked that it taught kids to be environmentally friendly and used their creativity so I wanted my child to start their preschool program. However, it is extremely pricey. To even be considered for tuition assistance, one must complete and application, pay a $40.00 application fee and a $950.00 deposit. They did assure me if the financial assistance wasn't sufficient, I could cancel and get my deposit back. I provided every thing in March. Decisions were in April. Chris, one of the owners called me and left a message on 5/15/12. I called him back on 5/16/12 and told me I had received tuition assistance. I called him back on 5/17/12 and asked him what the cost would be. I received the contract on 5/24. It had a purple pos-it it note that stated, Tuition asssistance $xxx. It didn't break down tuiton cost or before/after care. On 5/29/12, Chris called me and left a v/m. I called him back on the 30th. He asked if I had received the contract. I said I had, but I didn't see the breakdown of tuition cost. I inquired if it would cover before/after care. Chris, said, "You need before/after care?" I said, "Yes, I am a single working mother. It was on the application and I told staff." He said, "No and it was $x per day for before and another cost for after. I said, It was not affordable. My son's father just got laid off on the 18th. He said it wasn't that much. I said, "I have lost all child support with him not having a job and not having $X amount, means I have to stay affordable. I hoped that he would get called back or find another job soon, but with the way things are, I don't know." He asked me how much I was paying now and I told him. He said he wouldn't be able to meet that which I completely understood. He said that he would go back to the board to see if they would provide additional assistance for before/after care. On 5/31/12, he said that the board approved additional assistance for tuition. So I asked how much would I have to pay on a monthly basis. He rambled off various numbers and I said once again, "I am not sure that this will be affordable." He said, "Do you want your son to go to Lucy?" I replied, "I would love for him to attend. I want a place where his intelligence will flourish and not just be another number. However, wanting and being able to afford are two different things. I need to know the total as I need to compare it to what I am paying now." He said that he would break it down and send it to me in another contract. On 6/5/12, he asked if I had received the contract. I said no and asked him to email it to me. He said he didn't know how and that he would send another one. I said that I would just have someone pick it up to make it easier. On 6/7/12, I did have someone pick it up. On the 12th, I finally picked it up from the person that picked it up from me and I brought it home.Chris had called the 13th and asked if I looked at the contract. I told him I had to discuss it with my son's father. On the 23nd, we sat down and discussed the cost. I thought I could swing it at the time. Then, there were medical issues and the savings was dwindling. Chris called me on 4/2/1 and I said I didn't have time to speak at that time. I was extremely busy at work and I hadn't mailed the contract because I needed some more time to figure out if I could afford it. Finally on the 16th, Chris left a v/m. He said, "I need that contract back if your son is going to attend here. We have a waiting list and some of these children need financial assistance." I called him back and said, "Chris, I have had medical issues, I am struggling with trying to keep afloat because like I said I am not getting child support and go ahead and give my son's spot to someone else. Right now, the financial constraints are just not going to be able to handle these costs and maybe next year it would look better" He still tried to push and say, "What if we did a 12 month payment. You don't want him to go to Lucy?" I said, "That is not the point. I am struggling to keep food on the table and vacation even had to be cancelled." He said, "You work full time right?" I said, "Yes" He replied, "I was going to say you could volunteer." I finally said, "Chris,it would be unfair to you to send my son there in this situation, not pay you all and I do I don't even have the $752.00 to pay for August. He said with a surprise, "You don't have $700?" I said no. On the 30th, I asked him for the $950.00 deposit back. He said that it was not refundable. He then said that people had until 4/30 to cancel. He said since they were late deciding financial assistance, they extended it until the 5/15 for tuition assistance. I said, I was never informed of that and I have been telling you I am unable to afford it. Therefore, I have went to consumer affairs, the BBB and an attorney. I have 2 children who attend Lucy School, and a 3rd that will attend starting next year. We started out in the preschool program, planning on transferring to public school after kindergarden. My oldest transferred to the local public school and I saw an immediate change in her passion for learning. She would ask me nearly everyday if she could visit Lucy, see what they were learning, see her old teachers, etc. She was doing very well in her studies in her new school, but something was missing! She stayed at her new school for 2 years, and continued to request Lucy School. Financially, private school was never in the plans for us- but after moving her back to Lucy and seeing how passionate she is about school.... we make things work. Im extremely happy with the teachers at the school, and most importantly Im happy that my children are thriving there. read more

I agree with the above positive reviews of gorgeous grounds, small classes, and caring teachers. We had experience with the preschool teachers, who are very skilled at respectfully guiding the children through the day with fun and freedom and appropriate boundaries. Here's the unhappy part: Parents are required to sign a contract by the beginning of April for the following entire school year which you *cannot* get out of. If something happens and you don't end up going to Lucy School, you are charged for the *entire* year's tuition, unless the class fills up. In our case, we had two grandmothers die and we sold and bought a house and moved, all within a few months, but when we pleaded the case, they didn't budge an inch or a dollar on requiring the whole year's tuition. We told them we weren't coming back on the first of August, more than a month before school was to start, and their "saving a spot" for our son until then wasn't costing them any money, as his class hadn't filled up, but they claim that they have to bank on everyone's tuition that early in the season, as it all gets allocated for expenses that outstrip their income. Now we're out about six and a half thousand dollars, unless his class fills up, though I don't know what the impetus for them would be to tell us if it did, as they already have our money. I think it's too much to require families to know exactly what they are doing from next fall to spring five months in advance, and then not to account for any wiggle room for special circumstances. read more

This school promises so much for children but the promises do not translate into the classroom. NOT an option for grade school children. I had two children attend this school. My oldest attended through 1st grade. The school promises a nurturing environment. After seeing my oldest child struggle (afraid to attend school, lack of educational support) and his teacher humiliate him repeatedly, I decided to pull him. My instinct was that Lucy School was bully him and our family into assimilating to their outrageous schooling methods. As a result, I had him tested through Child Find. He was on grade level and fine. Lucy School teachers are not certified, the educational support team is run mainly by volunteer parents without proper credentials. After trying to remove my children, I was hit with the contract. I will see Lucy School in court. Don't be fooled, they will sue you. My children are thriving away from this school and it's bait and switch advertising. read more

We're so happy we chose to send our daughters here. The entire community that comes with the school is amazing.

Both of our children absolutely love the school. The community that has formed around it is also awesome and supportive.

Be careful of the hidden contract which Lucy School does not make available online. After registering your child, Lucy School will snail mail a second contract which locks you in to paying 100% of the tuition for the year. Our family had to relocate before the school year even started and we had to pay for our children for the full year! This was debilitating and despite our efforts we were not met with much compassion. Please be aware of this seemingly hidden contract and sign the documents carefully.
