When summer came along, Michael Proctor and his team took me in with open arms. Since joining his academy, I have come to find a second jiujitsu home where I am always welcome. Some specific notables for this gym? 1. The techniques are very.... technical, as they should be. Michael Proctor really does know the art. He knows how important the little details are and he instills that knowledge in our training every day. Also - a side note with Michael and his techniques: If Michael sees one person needing help on specific escapes, positions, or submissions, he will cater the class' curriculum for that person. He does this for everyone, not only his shining stars. 2. VERY CLEAN FACILITIES. Michael makes sure the mats are always clean. I wouldn't be surprised if he told me that he mops the mat multiple times after just one training session. He takes a lot of pride in the team's hygiene, emphasising the importance of handwashing, shoe-wearing, and gi-washing. 3. The energy in the room is always positive. It is not uncommon for the class to start off with a few jokes. Michael keeps it light and it makes a fun environment to train in. I'm a little nervous with contact sports and want my kid to be safe. So it was important to find a gym that had the knowledge and experience to teach my child the right way. When we walked into the Hammerhead Mixed Martial Arts gym, there were many members training, some in gi's and some in plain workout clothes, but everyone was engaged and the atmosphere seemed relaxed and friendly. Joey, the owner and head coach was able not only to answer all my questions but also educate me and gave me advice for what to look out for in a mixed martial arts place. He didn't seemed concerned for me or to sign up with him but rather to sign up with a martial arts gym that can do more harm than good. We got a seven day free trail and my son was able to try out every class Joey teaches. Long story short, we signed up. We felt part of the team from day one and everyone is helpful and patient with my son. I learned later how much experience in various contact sports the trainers have and how well they apply their techniques to teaching. I am very confident that my son gets the right training, support and is in a safe environment with the best trainers. If you weren't committing to a year up front - it would be better. If they had a 10 punch card option- that would be helpful- but I also don't want to pay for 100 punches at once. They need more flexible membership types.

Along the way, I need to stop due to personal reasons but continued to pay the monthly fees because that is what is signed up for. I went to class for 2 months only. I had just paid the last $145 for my agreement and when I called member solutions (their billing company) to cancel they said I still owed money for another month and I should contact my local studio to resolve. The response I received was: Thank you for reaching out to me here. I can see where the confusion is. Your TOTAL membership cost for the 12 month was $1740. You paid $145 of that in studio. The remaining $1595 as you see on the billing agreement is what you owed to the billing company. Your final payment of $145 on July 3rd will fulfill the $1595 owed to Member Solutions. This was never said or made clear when I signed up. The only contract I signed was one for $1595 and not for $1740. I feel like I got scammed. I know that I was scammed. If this is a policy they should make it clear and give you a copy of that. I have recommended ILK to a few friends; one did the Federal Way class. In the end, i am sickened by throwing this money away, but more so the scam. Stay clear
