Solid, solid Latin food and for a good price at that. I'm not sure if they are related to the Lula's Latin Cuisine in Lodi, but I've been going there for years. However, that Lula's of Lodi is not open on Sundays, while this one is, hence why I decided to finally go the extra mile (literally) to check this Lula's out. To be honest, I didn't look at much of the menu (although I'm sure much of it is good), EXCEPT for the Daily Specials. Each day, just like the other Lula's, there are different items that you can order for a VERY, VERY reasonable price ($8.50 and up as of Sept. 2023). It's actually quite shocking that you can order an entree of anything in 2023 for just $8.50, but you can here! All of the Daily Specials come with a protein of your choice (depending on what's available that day) + white/yellow rice and pinto beans. When I say protein of your choice, like I said, various days will have a different offering, such as, Shredded Beef/Ropa Vieja, Chicken Stew, Roasted Pork/Pernil, Baked Chicken, 1/2 Chicken, Pork Stew, Ox Tail Stew, Baked Chicken, etc. On our 1st visit to this location, we ordered a few entrees to try - Shredded Beef/Ropa Vieja, Roasted Pork/Pernil, Baked Chicken, 1/2 Chicken and Baked Chicken. To sum it up, everything was good and the portions were HUGGGGE. So much so that we easily split each entree into 2 meals. Yellow, and even the White, rice were tasty. The meats were solid - some on the drier side, but it's to be expected with Pernil and pieces of white meat Baked Chicken. The pinto beans definitely helped with adding some moisture to the meal. Since this location is located within the Bergenfield town, you can only find parking strictly on the street. Also, this location has a few tables that you can dine in on, but just about every customer I saw walk in, walked back out with takeout. Just about all of the employees didn't speak much English here and only one was delegated to help me because they spoke it somewhat, so try to be patient when ordering if you don't speak Spanish. And, one more tidbit is that you can order online via their website, but it's possible that not all of the items that you purchase will be available, so when you show up, they might ask you to order what's available. read more

Lots of choices of delicious Dominican fare. Service was OK. Smoked Pork Chops were delicious. Yellow Rice has veggies in it, and the Black Beans were so good. I'm not a big Beans person, but these were delicious. Hubby was disappointed that it was very liquidity, almost soup like, but that is how I prefer it LOL Oxtail was flavorful and tender. Again, Red Beans were too liquid for hubby's taste, but I loved it. hehehe We found this restaurant because they opened a new location in Lodi, just as good. As a proud Dominican who frequents many Dominican establishments, especially in New York City, I was excited to try this place while in the area. I didn't feel like driving into the city, so I gave it a shot. I truly wanted to like it, the young lady working there was incredibly kind and welcoming, but I have to be honest: this is not authentic Dominican food. Anyone who genuinely knows Dominican cuisine understands that our flavor comes from fresh ingredients, onions, garlic, oregano, not from heavy use of artificial coloring or excessive tomato paste. The beans, for example, had a deep red color with visible seasonings floating on top, almost like too much tomato sauce or seasoning mix was dumped in. That's not how we prepare habichuelas. I ordered white rice, which was fine, hard to mess up. But the chicken in sauce was disappointing. Traditional Dominican pollo guisado is made by burning a bit of sugar in oil to give it that rich, dark caramelized flavor and color. You can taste the oregano, the garlic, the onions, it's distinct. This chicken tasted like it was smothered in tomato paste with red seasoning. Worse, it was tough and overcooked. I took a few bites and, unfortunately, walked away disappointed, chalking the $13 up as a loss. I say this not to bash the establishment, I know how hard it is to run a restaurant, and I truly believe the chef is trying. But to truly deliver Dominican flavor, you need someone in the kitchen who knows the soul of the food, not just someone following a recipe. This missed the mark. read more

I've been coming to this location for about 4 years and every item I've had is delicious. From the shrimp ceviche to the beef empanadas and everything in between is cooked to perfection. They always have food readily prepared so you could get in and out within 5 minutes as long as there's not a long line. Even their desserts that they have are amazing. Food is decent, they got tables to stay for a meal but service is different based on you having to go to counter to tell them what you want opposed as to the waiter coming to you to take your order. Food took too long to come out for something as simple as mofongo, about 45 mins but then again, they have a lot of pickup orders, so will not be surprised if my order got lost in translation until I went to question if order was coming up anytime soon. I visited this spot for some lunch and found the food to be pretty good. The place gets very busy during the lunch crowd and the food is very fresh. They serve a wide selection of traditional Spanish foods and the service is good. Very nice ladies serving you quickly from prepared food including chicken made a few different ways, roast pork, goat, as well as pigs feet. All well done and quite tasty. I waiting almost 2.5 hours for an order they never made and kept assuring was on its way to be delivered. The woman never asked for my name or order. DO NOT ORDER FOOD FOR DELIVERY!!! I've been eating here for years. What happened today is totally unacceptable. I ordered a lunch special along with 2 tripe soups. When I received the order, one soup container was cracked and the other was open. The soup was in the bag and not in the container. It was a disaster!! Yes, I ordered it from DoorDash and the driver was partly at fault. The driver told me that's how he received it. He should have told them while he was there. However, as a regular customer who has catered there numerous times and was literally going to call in an order next week for a big party, The least they could have done was offer me a replacement. Even if they told me to come get it I would have done it. Instead they chose to be cheap and say "sorry we are not responsible and you have to take it up with DoorDash." Crappy way to deal with a customer over $10. This has happened at other local restaurants such as Mis Raices in Teaneck and they quickly apologized and corrected the mistake. Aside from Flan, Tres Leches cake is my second favorite Hispanic dessert. This location crossed my expectations and I devoured the cake in a couple of seconds. We ordered: Passion fruit juice 5/5 Coffee with milk (hot)5/5 Sancocho (daily special on Sunday) 10000/10000 Papa rellena 4/5 (very crispy but I wish there was more meat filling) Pernil with rice& beans 3.5/5 (tad bit dry for our liking) We had a really good time. The food was delicious and huge portions. The staff was friendly and spoke mostly Spanish. She was sweet and attentive. Theres a huge variety of things to order off the menu and there was a hot food section in the back of the restaurant. There's also a unisex bathroom and lots of parking spots. This restaurant is great for on the go too. I saw many people leave with huge huge bags of food!! The service is fast. It's pretty much the only Dominican food around which is why I get it.However I have to say that there hours posted online are completely off it says they close at nine but passed by around 8:15 and doors where already locked. Horrible... let me count the ways: - They use MSG in their food- I had an allergic reaction.. they should tell you that, probably Sason is the condiment. - The waitress missed taking one of our 4 orders and just walked away... we had to get up and ask her to return to our table so she could finish taking the order! - Then... the order she missed was wrong - he wanted breaded chicken and she brought him garlic chicken... that is what I had ordered (VERY Salty) - One of the cooks came out of the kitchen holding a step stool... Yuck yuck yuck! I went there this Saturday afternoon hoping to get some delicious authentic Latin cuisine and although the pictures online should have been my first sign to not eat here, I took the risk anyway. We walked up to the buffet style counter and started to order our food, we got Dominican soup, and Chicharron as appetizers. Soup was decent, but definitely wasn't hot, more like Luke warm. And the chicharron was fat pieces of dark meat chicken. For our meal, we got bone-in chicken in a yellow sauce? Not sure what it was but it was dry and definitely seemed to sit there all day... THE least they could have done was add additional sauce so that consumers wouldn't know the food was old. As a side we asked for yellow rice, but they had none, so had to get white. I also got a half a rotisserie chicken and white rice, the chicken was gunky and the rice was flavorless and had bits of hard rice pieces in it. After ordering an Icetea I hear a family of 5 come in to eat, and the lady behind the counter offered them "free Icetea" for dining in, which I thought was weird, bc I was dining in as well, and I thought I was a friendly patron. When I asked if the unopened can of brisk Icetea I was given was free, she seemed annoyed, which again, really weird. Bc as a customer if you give me a perk like a free drink, I'm tipping extra since you were kind enough to offer. Now to really top my experience off they charged me 15% gratuity for eating in the restaurant, TWO PEOPLE! And the charge wasn't on my original receipt. I paid cash, got the WRONG CHANGE, asked to see a receipt and noticed she added a 15% tip. Legally in the state of New Jersey you're only allowed to SUGGEST a percentage of gratuity to parties of 5 or more, maybe the number is even 6, but it is NEVER required, and certainly not for 2! The woman behind the counter literally fought with me to give me my tip back. Before ANY OF THIS OCCURRED I was originally planning to leave $10 which is what I had on the table, when I got up to pay the check, until I noticed they added gratuity WITHOUT my consent. So next time you're looking to try a new spot, TRUST YOUR GUT, and the pictures online, and GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. Especially after reading the reviews from other people! My prior experiences were terrible but not like this last one. They included: of course the staff and OWNER not understanding me saying menu items (as they appear on their online menu and regular menu). Very long wait times despite not being busy. There was such a long delivery time past their estimate and when i called to ask if they had the right town (bc i live 3 minutes away) they would reply with a simple "yes" and hang up which lead to me calling back like 30-40 mins later and the same thing happening. I came to grips that this was normal for them. But nothing compared to the order from last night when i sent my wife. I understood that they didn't speak English and i was okay with that because i wanted to have Spanish Cuisine and some rice and beans especially (which a 6 year old could probably make). So i originally wanted delivery which didn't work out so well. called their phone a few times and waited for countless rings So i decided to make things simple for them and sent my wife in with a written list of our order anticipating that they don't speak English. It was written identically from their menu to try to avoid confusion. The very unfriendly cashier gave my wife the look of death and could not read the list and then consulted a waitress and the owner and neither of these 3 people could read it ! They then gave her a hard time about even writing down her order and were laughing and making jokes with each other, as if my wife did something wrong. She remained nice and then when they asked her the items she said simple things like "croquet, rice , beans, skirt steak , chicken and empanada" how they couldn't understand those words except maybe chicken and steak completely perplexed me. My wife was still being overly nice which the favor was returned by angry stares and laughing. I could understand if my wife was asking them about food permits or complex immigration laws. But this was food from their own menu ! To put the icing on the cake, they told us it would be 15-25 mins. So instead of us risking them feeling rushed and going back in 20 mins we went back in 40 mins m. The food still wasn't done and then to put the cherry on top of the whip cream, so to speak, the clerk asked my wife to see the paper again which seemed like she was mocking us at that point. Why would they need the paper if they couldn't read it in the first place ? I will forever be bamboozled about how an entire staff could be so hostile when filling a 50 dollar order. They tried to make up for the wait time with a small cup of black beans (which we only asked for red). They should do what Chinese restaurants do and have a check list menu so people who only speak English can order and will not be ostracized. Next time I'm taking the ingredients it takes to make all of their food and doing it myself for a fraction of the price and without the torment. Thanks :) read more

Let me be very clear, I have been to this restaurant many times before and have ordered this same dish but what a rip off!!!! 4 out of the 6 pieces were the size of a dollar (coin) and a quarter and the remaining two were quite small as well. I ordered online delivery from Lula's one day out of curiosity. Sadly, the tripe soup (only available on Sunday at $5) was sold out and they called me to apologize and offer another substitute. Though, they only spoke Spanish. Thankfully, my friend is Spanish or else it would've been such a mess! We split the fried sweet plaintains $3, which was pretty good. As good as other places I've ordered it. The friend had roasted pork mofongo $10.95, which was a little steep but he really enjoyed it. I got the baked chicken dinner special $7.99, which was definitely worth the price. I highly recommend the dinner specials to save some costs. All the portions were HUGE and we had enough for lunch the next day even! read more

I hate to give this place 2 stars but I jut have to. I used to rave about this place. The food USED to be fresh, tasty and they always had a variety of food to choose from. They even make plates to order. This is when they used to be in Dumont. Ever since they relocated to Bergenfield they have really lost their touch. They are always out of almost everything! They do not offer a good variety/selection of dishes. Hopefully business is good because the owners are very kind, hardworking and try to please their customers. I am just sad to say that for the past few months I have visited about 3 a month in hopes of finding my fav dishes and they are either completely out or only have a portion left seeming dry and un fresh. I don't order dishes in advance anymore either because they serve you bones (chicken) and very limited amount of meat. Even the chicken soup barely has chicken in it anymore. ITS CHICKEN SOUP, some chicken should be in it! Anyhow, I can go on and on about how dry the rice and beans are also but I will stop here. I would also like to note that I have heard various other local customers complain, so its not just me. As well, I have attempted to purchase food on weekends, weekdays day and night and have not seemed to have luck. A very disappointed former customer who is of Dominican heritage and who can no longer appreciate tasty and fresh food any longer. Best of luck with the business!
