We came in at 6pm on a Saturday night without a reservation and I panicked because the place was packed, the hostess warmly greeted us and found us a table with only a 15min wait. The ambiance was really cute and warm, a great date spot. We ordered the fries loaded with lamb and it was incredible! We also ordered 2 appetizers and 2 entres plus drinks for 2 people including the chicken and lamb and our whole dinner was $115, which is LOW for this vibe and food quality. The portions were large and we probably could have been more than full with just 2-3 dishes and not the 4 we ordered. Will definitely be a regular here. You can tell the people here really care about their business. Love this place! read more

We went twice within a two week timespan and both times service was pretty poor. Curt, transactional, unfriendly. Was sharing a dish with my husband, and asked for a serving spoon and was told "there are plenty of utensils already on the table". Likely won't go back. So my wife said we had to try the $35-per-seat mezze sampler for our brunch date without kids, and they only prepare it if the whole table orders it... and I was thinking "that all looks like good appetizer food but I wanted a real brunch" - $70 for dinner appetizers... for brunch? But I said okay and it was incredible. We had one falafel each from that platter but I would have paid $35 for just that one falafel that changed my understanding of what falafel could be. (And no, I'm not vegetarian.) The hummus, muhammara, and fuul all seemed like they'd been made fresh after we ordered. I was just amazed by what all those foods could be. And my wife's family makes most of these foods for gourmet grocery stores... so it's not like I hadn't had the good stuff before. This was just so next level; I didn't know it was possible for these foods to be this good. And all the fruit on the plate wasn't just whatever the wholesale supplier brought it. My girlfriend and I were starving after a 5-hour hike at Muir Woods National Monument, which was our first time visiting. We stumbled upon Lulu and were pleasantly surprised by this little gem! We didn't even know it was Palestinian cuisine until after I ordered. The staff was incredibly friendly and patient, even though we were exhausted and hungry. The food was absolutely amazing - we loved the Baklava French Toast, Trout Rillettes, and Mansad Roti Rolls. This was our first time trying Palestinian food, and it was an amazing introduction. Less than friendly to food allergies, but this is something that can likely be learned/improved upon. I just needed the risotto left off the plate with the chicken (not like a major fundamental change to prep or substitution). I totally understand the food is a work of art and the dishes are carefully thought through but my disability doesn't care if the food is beautiful. That said, the design of the restaurant is gorgeous and the food is delicious. The staff were polite. The food is delicious. This is restaurant for a special occasion. The menu at LuLu's was new to me and therefore special and intriguing. I loved it and was happy I brought friends who also enjoyed it. Not only were the items delicious but they were beautifully presented. I especially enjoyed the Palestinian Pancake for dessert. A real treat. Laura Lee served us. She was professional, very knowledgeable, patient and helpful. She explained a variety of menu items which were new to us. She is a gem. The ambiance is great. Wonderful light in the restaurant and bright, pretty restaurant design. A real pleasure. It is a bit noisy with reverberating conversations, but I don't know what would help. There are strict reservation policies which make sense if they are to operate successfully and I support that. I also support that they are cashless but I didn't realize that was the case until it was time to pay. Perhaps like some other restaurants you could put a cashless symbol on the restaurant window, though I don't know if that would have helped because we might have missed that. I don't want to discourage you from going but you should be aware of their payment procedures. There were three of us. We wanted to get three separate checks and use three separate credit cards or cash. Not possible. They allowed two credit cards per table. Very difficult and awkward for us. The payment process could be much more customer friendly. It diminishes the pleasure of dining to have to become accountants at the end of the meal. read more

I made an incomplete (no credit card entered) reservation for Thursday October 24 at 6:30 but I want to cancel it. So now what? I guess I'll have to phone them. read more

Felt like a king when I got the mezze brunch with my family. Truly amazing presentation and the falafels were to die for

Lulu on Solano had its soft opening this weekend. Nina and I have been eagerly awaiting its opening and met there for lunch today. Nina parked a few blocks away and we arrived at the restaurant together. We walked in and were stunned by how busy it was and how beautiful. Juliet greeted us and asked if we had a reservation. We said no, although we will know to make one for next time. She pointed to the last table against the wall and said she just needed to clean the table and set it up, which she did while we waited. Once we were seated Mica took our drink orders, tea w/ low fat milk and stevia for me and water for Nina. Interestingly, given how crowded and buzzy the place was, it was quiet enough for comfortable conversation. I already knew I wanted the mini mezze sampler. The regular mezze requires everyone at the table to partake. Nina opted for the sliders, which came three to an order. I think they were out of one kind and so she opted for two falafelles and one chicken. The tea was served in a white pot w/ a small cup and the milk and stevia, the pot on a lovely blue and white Turkish trivet. It must not have been clear that our orders were separate, because Nina's sliders came much sooner than my mezze. Finally we asked about it. We also asked Juliet if Mona was there and she was. She came over and said hello and we chatted a little throughout our stay. Finally my mezze was served. There were small bowls of muhamarra, hummus and labneh, dark baked pita chips, crudité, including pickled vegetables, and three falafelles w/ some kind of mayo mixture drizzled on top. I had not had muhamarra before and it was delicious! The hummus was excellent and I adore labneh. The pita chips were wonderful and the crudité were delicious. The falafelles were good. Nina preferred her chicken slider to the falafelle ones. I had noticed scones and other pastries on the menu and requested one of each scone to go. One was strawberry and labneh and I forget what the other was. They will go in the freezer. Nina was concerned about getting a parking ticket, as she was in a 90 minute parking zone. I needed to use the bathroom so we said goodbye at the table. We had requested separate checks as our bills were so disparate and each left our credit cart. I remembered where the bathroom was from the space's previous occupants. It's a single, inclusive bathroom and as gorgeous as you might expect from the dining rooms' décor. I had hoped to copy the photos from EarerSF's article to post, but it didn't work. I hope future reviewers will take and post photos. We will definitely be back and I will take some. read more

The service was good, the presentation fine. But unfortunately the cuisine was nothing to write home about. To cut to the chase, the food was extremely salty for my taste. This is apparently a Mediterranean style restaurant, but for the taste and price, there are better options out there such as La Mediterranee in Berkeley and San Francisco. Speaking of the price, it's extremely high for the amount you receive (very small portions) and the extremely salty taste. And their drinks, particularly their mocktails such as their Strawberry Fennel Spritz, comes in a very short rocks glass for $7. I opted for a bottle of Coke which was $4. The saving grace is that the staff gives good, attentive service and they seem to be trying hard to pass themselves off as a Five Star establishment, but they need to improve on those points mentioned above. They are located near a busy intersection on Solano near San Pablo Avenue, so street parking is also a challenge. Despite what I mentioned, it seems to attract a well to do, elderly crowd as we sat there, and I'm sure they have some sort of a following, so I wish Lulu's the best. read more

I live in Seattle and I'm intentionally flying into Oakland instead of SFO from now on just so I can head to Berkeley to this sweet little spot. From the cardamom mocha made by expert hands to the knafeh pancake and Turkish breakfast - so much to love! And as if the food wasn't enough, the decor is classy, bright and every detail feels special and unique. Great service, too. I loved my meal so much I went on my way from the airport and then three days later on my way back through. read more

When the first words out of a staffers mouth are "I'm sorry, can i help you?" it sets a tone. I like a lot of things about this place, the decor is cute and I think they're making interesting decisions on the menu. It's expensive, but so is everything these days. The atmosphere was lively but the food was mediocre and service was poor. They may be overwhelmed in the new location. I had the Harissa tots which were too greasy. My husband had a Caesar salad with falafel which were pretty good. We waited 1/2 an hour to be served my dessert, a Traditional Knafeh. Finally I gave up and just asked to take it home. It turned out to be a tough leathery pancake with pistachio nuts on top. read more

We cannot overstate the joy that a meal at Lulu brings to our family. The food is fresh, vibrant, and creatively presented. Every perfectly placed edible flower echos the love that is clearly present in every tasty dish. We had many dishes this past visit as there were 6 of us. We probably ordered enough for 10! But it's hard to resist. Try any dish with whipped labne. Enjoy the stuffed branzino! Don't miss the falafel and house made breads. Definitely leave room for the desserts. read more

5 stars because of the food and presentation, which is what matters the most. Not one dish my wife and I did not like...and we eat with our eyes, so we had a full table of dishes. The corn...holy cow good, the rice with mint...goodness gracious. The drinks were ok, maybe skip. The service, there was a switch in crew and the serving lady did not help us at all until I called her over after she walked by us 7-8 times for other tables. Almost gave a 4 star because of service. Came with my (grown) daughter for dinner and enjoyed the ambiance and the food. We shared a citrus salad sprinkled with za'atar and a Palestinian take on the philly cheese steak that definitely raised the bar on that humble sandwich. For dessert with had a baklava waffle that somehow fused both of these things into a new thing that was even better. We want to return and try more of the menu. Less formal than the wonderful Zaytoon across the street and Lulu has no wine/liquor license but you can byo. A great addition to East Bay middle eastern fare. Highly recommended. read more

One of the best meals we've had in a while. So much flavor! We went for dinner and got the mezze sampler, halloumi, Caesar salad, khubs with an order of extra hummus. Very filling. Currently not serving alcohol, so we got a pot of black tea. Everything we got was SO good. Some of the best falafel and halloumi we've ever had. The decor is super cute and well thought out. The servers were super kind and attentive. Can't wait to try brunch. What a treasure! The flavors are divine, but you must add the Pistachio Latte to your regular menu! This is popular for a reason! They could use a restaurant twice its size due to the popularity, but the quality in food and service is top notch!
