Blueberry Pancakes (blueberry compote on the side)
    Mariyet A.

We came back for brunch. Once again, the food was great! Our kids loved the pancakes! It seems like a little bit of mochi pancake texture. The blueberry compote surprised me and is not overly sweet. The butternut squash fritters were delicious! Also had a build your own bowl, which was great as well.

I never made it here when it was Boss Burgers, but it was probably for the best since my occasional carnivorous cravings would've increased my red meat consumption. That's what makes Kitava a welcome presence in this space. I've happily patronized their original Mission location (review: https://yelp.to/fIpNlGxiIC) and their outpost in North Oakland (review: https://yelp.to/sbMKWwWm7M), so I already knew how healthy the food was going to be. I was glad to see a lot of dining space in here, including roomy booths. On my first here, I tried the $14 Kimchi Mushroom Bowl, a hearty delight with chimichurri mushrooms, kimchi, roasted asparagus, arugula, and wild rice mixed in chickpea miso dressing (Photo 10). Made with coconut sugar, the $4.50 Dark Chocolate Brownie (Photo 6) was a guilty pleasure, and the $4 can of Ollipop Classic Root Beer was surprisingly satisfying. It provided a healthy alternative to soda. On a follow-up visit, Jamie W and I came here for lunch. He was conscientious and went with the $14 Guac & Greens Salad, a healthy mix of farmer's greens, roasted zucchini, black beans, red cabbage, pickled onions, and guacamole, topped with cassava tortilla strips and jalapeno lime dressing (Photo 9). He was quite pleased. I had the heartier $16 Sesame Chicken Bowl with crispy, breaded chicken. They sat on jasmine rice with charred broccoli florets, sesame togarashi, and chopped green onion, accompanied by ginger ponzu sauce (Photo 8). Even though mine had a higher calorie count, it was quite delicious. We split the $4.50 Chocolate Chip Cookie which was plainly gluten-free but still satisfied our need for something sweet (Photo 7). Solano Avenue has an impressive variety of worthwhile eateries, and Kitava will definitely be part of our rotation. FOOD - 5 stars...I think they've perfected their healthy recipes over the years AMBIANCE - 5 stars...really spacious, usually not busy SERVICE - 4 stars...pretty cordial TOTAL - 5 stars...this mini-chain is really holding up well RELATED - Exploring Solano Avenue? Sesame Chicken Bowl

Exciting news for Solano Ave. with a Kitava location opening. We've ordered to-go before from this specific location, but finally had the opportunity to taste in-person. Def. have been a fan of Kitava since the Buck Wild Brewing days ~ thankful it's back closer in the East Bay (there's an Oakland location too!) Love the look/feel of the restaurant ~ clean, minimal, all the positive vibes while you're eating clean as well. I love the flavored water and I'm a sucker for a warm bowl. Convenient, mixing in all the food groups, and health forward. This go-around we did the Sesame Chicken Bowl which comes with charred broccoli, crispy chicken in cassava flour breading, jasmine rice, served with a ginger ponzu sauce on the side. With avo added, perfection (although that's extra, but would be a great permanent addition). We did a side of the crispy chicken (a healthier nugget), sweet potatoes, and charred broccoli for the kiddo. A win all-around. Service is quick and efficient ~ this is a fast casual location where you order at the register, grab your number, meal is delivered to you, and you bus your table upon exit. FYI, for those looking for a different dinner approach. Adding this spot to our monthly "where should we go" nights ~ love the mission, love the food philosophy, and company values. I guess I love the bowls so much I wish there were a few extra scoops per serving, but maybe that's the parental hunger in me ;) Metered parking can be tough on Solano, but not impossible. Just noticed they have Brunch now as well ~ Butternut Squash Fritter Tacos are calling our name!

Came here for dinner. And we each had a sesame chicken bowl. Very tasty and satisfying, I only wish the serving size was bigger! We had the brownie and chocolate chip cookie too, neither were my favorite. Service is easy. Order at kiosk or at register. Take a number, find a seat and they'll bring the food to you. Service was friendly. Clean and bright spot. I know my GF-free friends would appreciate this place. Looking forward to coming back.

Kitava opened in Boss Burger's space. Similar infrastructure. Change of seatings, decor on walls. Menu similar to Oakland. No table service. Order at counter or kiosk. Food/drinks brought to table 10ish minutes. Bus own trays. Pricing up $1 + 5% health surcharge. Business robust. Business model working. Offerings: signature bowls & salads, drinks, beers, wines, desserts, snacks, kombucha, hard cider. Bites: kimchi mushroom bowl(14) -wild rice blend, argula, kimchi, & soy-free chicken pea miso dressing were evidently fresh & 'Liz, they were outclassed by the main ingredients: -braised thinly sliced chimichurri mushrooms exuding much Unami & juiciness. -roasted thinly diagonally sliced young asparagus juicy & crunchy. *Fwiw decided not to mix ingredients in one clumb. Ate each ingredient individually and dipping each into miso dressing. Singular best. **tastes better than power bowl previously are. 5 stars worthy quality/guantity

Herb Ranch salad with Crispy Chicken
    Pat P.

A very pleasant surprise! If you are someone (like me) who does not typically go for these type of health food/salad places, I would say to give this one a try. Twice I've orders the herb ranch salad with crispy chicken, and twice I have devoured it. The dressing is creamy but tangy, and there's enough to fully coat the whole salad. There's also enough textural intrigue from the radish and croutons so the dish feels very balanced. The egg is overcooked but not very noticeable in the context of a salad. The crispy chicken is surprisingly moist on the inside, and the outside is crispy enough. But the crispy brussel sprouts truly live up to their promise, they are almost like brussel sprout chips and come with what I think is a cumin aioli. The salads are reasonably priced before adding a protein, but a protein really is needed for most of them to feel like a true meal. So yes, it ends up being a fairly pricey salad, but that is to be expected of this sort of place. Also, if you are not a dressing person, make sure to tell the cashier you want your salad completely plain, as they automatically add a little lemon juice & oil otherwise. Order at the counter and food is brought to the table. Water and silverware is serve yourself. The large windows bring a lot of light into the space and it's quite a pleasant spot to hang out and enjoy your meal.

The main reason I cannot give 5 stars - this place has a problem with flies.

OK, it happens but then I read that if you DO make a Rez, there is a $10 deposit per person. Tacky. So we decide to take a chance and walk in, and that was not a problem. Our waitress was nice and service was good. The issue, sadly, is the food. We started with gin and tonics, which the place specializes in. Multiple tonics and gins. The drinks were really weak. I remember going with my husband and the G&T went right to my head. This one might as well have been a sprite. Then came the food. The patatas bravas were basically French fries and the special sauce tasted like ketchup with a dollop of mayo in the middle. The cheese tray, for twenty bucks, consisted of three cheese chunks the size of an old school match box. The fried eggplant with honey was delish. Shrimp were just OK. Mussels with polenta were tasty. Then came the paella, which we shared. That was the most disappointing thing. 4 clams and a sprinkling of dried out, overcooked mystery meat. Pricewise, I'd say it's fair for inflationary times, except for the paella which was basically a rip. Next time I want tapas, I'm going to Tapas Bravas in Healdsburg. They never disappoint.

It was conveniently located across the street from the venue, and the unassuming outside of the restaurant did not hint at the amount of fun, ambiance, good food, and warm hospitality contained inside. First, there is the name. Not sure if it's some sort of play on words, secret joke, or if it's someone's actual name, but it works, kinda. It's kinda a restaurant, kinda a bar, kinda of a hangout, and kinda fun. The tiny entrance and plain facade reveals a bustling world of delicious food, tasty beverage, and lots of decorative eye candy to keep you looking around the space while you are hanging out with friends, on a date, or just relaxing after a long day. The decorations there are very upbeat, eclectic, fun, and distinctly Japanese pop culture. Posters, banners, flags, lanterns, toys, and trinkets can be found all over the restaurant, and made it fun to keep looking around and discover new novel things to look at. I did feel like I was in an authentic Izakaya somewhere in Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ebisu in Tokyo. The place had a lot of personality & personal flair in an otherwise, tiny & industrial small warehouse type space. Service was excellent. The host was the cute & personable Mina, who couldn't have been more accommodating, patient, friendly, and engaging. It was very busy, and even though it was our first time there, Mina made us feel welcome into their home and was also very helpful to guide us around their experience. The other staff were less engaging, but still professional, efficient, and polite. Service was quick, attentive, and friendly on all accounts, and they as a team, managed to serve an entire full house of hungry & happy patrons during the entire Saturday night dinner rush. Fun place with a good staff. We opted for Izakaya-type, shared small plates to satisfy our hunger cravings without getting too full and weighed down on big portions of heavy, rich foods. Everything on the long & expansive menu looked great, but we mostly stuck with small appetizers to sample & savor. It was nice that there were plenty of lighter, fresh vegetarian options as neither of us were really in the mood for seafood, fried food, or big heavy entrees. We ordered the Kinda Tofu, Kyuri sliced fresh cucumber salad, and Kinoko butter-grilled mushroom hot platter and washed it down with some green grape Jinro soju. Everything was pretty good! Not overly fried, greasy, salty, or seasoned. Lightly cooked, delicately glazed, with just enough seasoning & oil/sauce to make it taste good, but not end up too complicated or messy. The taste really came through using these minimal cooking & seasoning techniques. The taste of the original vegetables & tofu came through perfectly, and were only complimented by their light hints of adding flavor. Portion sizes were ample for two people, and presentation was appetizing and organized. The bill for 3 apps + 1 bottle of Soju was less than $50, so it was a good value for the fun experience & good food. Wait times during the dinner rush are long, and there isn't really anywhere to sit or stand, so reservations are recommended. You can also enter and go straight to the 10-seat bar if there are openings, but we got a table for two after around a 20-30 minute wait. After that, everything moves pretty quickly, from ordering, getting food & drinks, to wrapping up and getting your check. Perfect system if you're trying to get to a concert, movie, or appointment with a specific start time. I really liked this place, not Kinda, not Sorta, but Definitely, or Absolutely! Kinda Izakaya will always be our destination to eat & hang out next time we come back to Berkeley, it is a true gem of a Japanese Izakaya/light meal fare right in the heart of downtown Berkeley. It's fun, tasty, busy, and friendly. Small & cozy, yet also airy & comfortable.

Team is welcoming and knowledgeable about the menus and selection of sake! Layered tofu, spicy noodles with eggplant and the house made kimchi with hint of lemon were the highlight of our table. Same as the fried mushrooms ( good variety of mushrooms). Great texture and fun little dish to share. Grilled squid is also a hit. I will go back to try some other items on the menu! It's a casual place that you see locals some young couples with babies and grandparents. You have to try this place. The kitchen looks fun and you can seat at the bar to see the action!

The fry was delish and covered in a sweet & slightly savory sauce. Also enjoyed the Maitake Mushroom w/ Specialty Tofu Sauce Noodle. Pretty light in flavor, but creamy and buttery. Mushrooms were nice. 7/10 Service was friendly, but a bit slow. Nice and clean restroom. Heaters available next to all the tables outside, which was super nice given our windy and a bit chilly evening weather. Loved their aesthetic!! Overall, had a really lovely experience.

Lu-Rou Fan 滷肉飯 ($15) - hand cut duroc pork over rice, fresh sugar cane, pickled cucumber. Good but not mind-blowing. Sweeter than expected.

Everest is a Nepali / Indian restaurant and we were looking forward to the momos. Checking out the Happy Hour menu, we ordered a bunch of items. Chicken Momo, Pork Momo, Cheese Momo, Pani Puri, Pork Ribs, Cheese Naan and Dip, and Garlic Naan and Dip. The Momos came four to an order with a tomato-sesame chutney. The pork momos came in a unique shape and the chicken ones resembled potstickers. The chicken ones were much plumper and filled with juicy chicken. Never tried Pani Puri and these came four to an order with crispy shell filled with potatoes, chickpeas, spices on top of a glass with tangy water. You pour the water into the shell and pop it in your mouth. Fun and tasty. The naans were light and tasty and they came with a creamy dip. Pork ribs came two to an order. Friend said they were nothing special. Service was friendly and efficient. After placing our orders, food came out after a short wait. Will definitely come back if in the area.

On July 4, I wanted to eat some Indian food. A friend had mentioned this restaurant and a couple…read moreothers to choose from. I decided to try this place because it had lunch Thali (specials) and chicken pumpkin which I thought was interesting. We went there early afternoon and got seated quickly. There's inside and outside seating. I decided on the chicken pumpkin thali, ordered pani puri and a mango lassi. My friend ordered the chicken tikka masala thali. The thali comes in a metal lunch style tray. In each section is something different. It comes with rice, salad, daal, naan, papad, avocado raita, potato cucumber achar, and your choice of the entrees listed. The pani puri came out fast. The dough shells were crispy and filled with a spiced mashed potato filling. The tangy flavor water helped cut through the filling. Just dont put too much of the water on it. The mango lassi was good, a little on the sweeter side. I got the chicken pumpkin medium spicy, which felt like a medium. Chicken pumpkin was velvety, had a decent amount of chicken pieces although a little dry. I could taste the pumpkin which had sweetness. I feel for the price of the lunch Thali ranging from $18-21 depending which entree is a good deal since you can try a few different dishes/sides. I wouldn't mine coming again to try other dishes or happy hour.
