My daughter and I were very interested in having a Lebanese meal accompanied by Lebanese wines. We hit the jackpot at Chez Mansour. Our host/bartender could not have been more gracious, charming and informative. All dishes were freshly prepared and delicious and the Lebanese wine pairings were perfect. This was my first experience with Lebanese wines and learning of the mixture of grape varieties and their resulting tastes has led me to look for these wines in several wine shops. We went to Chez Mansour on Solano for dinner on a Tuesday night. The restaurant was nearly empty, just a few people at the bar. Our waitress assured us the food was fresh and delicious--not authentic, but good--and that the shawarma meat was on the grill, on the spit, and shaved per order. So we decided to give it a try. When it came to wine, we asked for a recommendation and explained what we liked. She mentioned they had a new wine list and suggested a Sauvignon Blanc from Lodi for $16 a glass, saying we were "getting a deal" because the new menu would soon list it at $18. We ordered that along with a glass of Santa Margherita, a simple, safe wine you can't go wrong with--and it ended up being the best part of the meal. The food, however, was a disaster. The baba ganoush was slimy, bitter, and had no trace of eggplant. The pita chips were burned, and when we pointed it out, she insisted they were "homemade and darker by design." Later, she brought what were clearly Stacy's pita chips. The shawarma, despite being described as freshly shaved off the spit, was anything but--it was dry, chewy, overly spiced with cinnamon, and tasted as if it had been sitting around for hours. The bartender noticed our disappointment and kindly brought both wine bottles to our table, telling us to pour what we liked and that he'd only charge for two glasses. That gesture was appreciated. But our server still returned with a bill charging us for three glasses, made no effort to fix anything, and even asked my husband how he liked his meal while his plate sat completely untouched. This level of food and service might pass in Paris at 4 a.m. (if you know, you know), but it's absolutely unacceptable at 8 p.m. in Berkeley--especially with so many great restaurants nearby. As a longtime Berkeley local who values supporting neighborhood businesses, I left feeling like this place only cares about grabbing money, not serving good food or hospitality. We spent $130 and still left hungry, ending up at Jupiter for pizza afterward. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone--not even my worst enemy. read more

This is one of my family"s - and definitely my kid's - favorite restaurant (and not because of a "kids' menu"). We always get the mezze platter, which is plentiful, fresh, and delicious. Then we follow up with a chicken kabob plate and green salad to share. Sometimes we go crazy and get a side of olives and/or a side of labneh, too. We don't know how he does it, but the chef cooks moist, well seasoned, and perfectly grilled chicken every time (and we've been here dozens of times). Just walked out of Chez Mansour--didn't even make it to ordering. We arrived excited to break fast and celebrate Iftar with high expectations after reading great reviews. Instead, we were met with rudeness from the moment we sat down. Before even welcoming us, the server bluntly informed us about a belly dancer and that we'd lose our table in 45 minutes. No water, no hospitality--just pressure to order immediately. When I asked for a menu, she brought it over but only addressed me and one of my friends, completely ignoring my other friend, who wears a hijab. When I tried to include her in the order, the server cut me off with an abrupt, nonsensical explanation about plate sizes. Her harsh tone and interruptions made it clear: we weren't welcome. Without hesitation, I told my friends we were leaving. We walked down to Zaytoon, where we were greeted warmly and enjoyed a wonderful meal. The contrast couldn't have been more stark. read more

HORRIBLE! STAY AWAY! This restaurant allows customers to dictate who 'deserves' to be here. My toddler fussed for a moment, and we were asked to leave because an elderly group complained. Instead of treating us fairly, the staff backed them up and made us feel completely unwelcome. To make matters worse, the food is horrible, the servers are incredibly rude, and despite being forced out, we were still charged for our food. I don't understand the negative reviews below! This restaurant may not appeal to everyone, but I enjoy its European atmosphere, excellent food, and impressive wine selection. The Chef personally prepares and cooks high-quality food while entertaining customers at the bar with endless stories. I recommend visiting on Friday and Saturday nights when local bands perform, and people dance. Being there feels like being back in Europe. The international crowd enjoys the atmosphere, shares wine, and talks about their lives, while the Chef serves a variety of appetizers and bites from the Mediterranean menu. I've met amazing people there, from famous professors at UC Berkeley to Alameda shipyard owners, businessmen, IT professionals, students, actors, dancers, and interesting folks from all sorts of trades. I bring my friends there, and they keep coming back with their families and friends. The customers share an international experience, as they are either foreign-born or have lived and worked overseas for an extended period. If you enjoy meeting people from different cultures, this place is perfect for you. I love the wine tasting and belly dancing performances. I live in the area and have always wanted to try Chez Mansour. I kept waiting for the right occasion as it seemed kind of upscale judging purely by ... I don't know ... maybe the word "Chez." Silly of me. Sadly, it was by far the worst middle eastern food I've had in the bay. To be fair, I've only eaten their food once and it was delivery. I ordered the Mezza plate and it was flavorless, like... no spices, no salt, nothing... Falafel and baba ganoush were edible and the least offensive. Hummus (which was the majority of the container) tasted like it was about to turn and other than that had very little flavor. Tabbouleh was not lemony had almost no bulgur that I noticed (I like my tabbouleh with mostly parsley but... this was not good, again.. FLAVOR PLEASE). Mujadara which is usually lentils, rice, and onions (and salt and spices) may have had all those ingredients somewhere but truly seemed like only lentils (and al dente at that). Grape leaves were forgettable. I also ordered the green beans and tomatoes which is a favorite dish of mine. It came swimming in oil. This dish seemed like it had the remnants of a flavor but what may once have been there got drowned in oil. Finally, I had ordered a side of Toum. When everything else tasted like nothing or worse, I thought to myself "At least there's toum - what could go wrong with that?" Dipped my (stale) bread into it and it was so sour I did not go for a second dip. And I LOVE toum. I had my son try it to make sure I wasn't imagining it and he agreed. He said the flavor kept tasting worse and worse on his tongue. Over $50 later I was still hungry and incredibly disappointed. In terms of ambiance, I have only seen it from the outside. Stay away. We were intending to go for dinner but when we told the server we weren't ordering drinks she immediately made us feel unwelcome. She said, "We're not a restaurant, we're a wine bar." She then took our order for a falafel appetizer and said some very confusing things about how the kebabs labeled small on the menu weren't available at dinner so we would have to pay almost $30 for a kebab plate that was apparently not large even though it was labeled large on the menu. It was then clear that we weren't welcome for dinner (she repeated multiple times that the plates were small and they were not a restaurant). She said it was ok for us to go even though the falafel order was in. We left. Since we spent some of her time and got water, I felt like we had to leave something. We only had a $20, which seemed like the right thing at the time but in retrospect I really regret it. I have never had a less hospitable experience in a hospitality business. read more

Dined outdoors at this lovely restaurant a few weeks ago. They have a nice setup out front with heaters. It is a small family run gem. They were a little short staffed on the night we were there but if there are two people in the world that can make it work, it was the two that were working that night. They were both working hard and hustling with smiles on their faces. Hours - We called ahead for our party of 3 children and 4 adults intending to dine at 230pm on a Saturday afternoon. Luckily we did because their posted hours did not reflect that they were closed from 230-430. We went at 430 instead with the caveat that the bar would be open and the kitchen would open up closer to 5. The timing ended up working perfectly for us. Meals - The food was good, the meats were tasty, the plates are good sizes. I do wish I could have ordered additional skewers/meats/veggies to add to our plates instead of the rice and other fillers. They said they couldn't do anything off menu or in addition which I understand but for those of us that don't eat a lot of carbs this is little tough. Salad/Apps - The cucumber salad was more of a yogurt sauce or dip; tasty and a lovely side for our meals but note it is not really a salad if that is what you are looking for. The mezze platter was lovely, gave us the chance to try a little bit of everything including dolma, falafel, baba ganoush, hummus and Wines - They have a lovely selection of wines and are happy to make suggestions depending on what you like/are looking for. Between us we had reds, whites and roses; all great recommendations! Pricing - The veggie kabob plate costs the same as the meat plates and we were advised the lunch and dinner portion of meat and/or veggie is the same but just priced differently depending on time of day. Because we couldn't add skewers/kabobs to any plates, we wound up ordering 4-5 plates (which can get pricey) to ensure we had enough meats/veggies; we ended up having quite a bit of rice/potatoes left over. Service - Again, service was great despite being short staffed. The tone was always kind and even when things got busy, we were taken care of. In the end, I asked a question about the bill and not only did the owner happily answer/explain but he unexpectedly gave my sister and I a bottle of champagne because were celebrating our birthdays. What a bizarre place. Let's get the simple stuff out of the way. The wine list at this "wine bar" is terrible. Mid-shelf Safeway, Joel Gott-level. Nothing remotely interesting. The waitress helpfully told us that women like Sauvignon Blanc. The food is mediocre. Kebabs small and overcooked, shwarma flavorless. Pita bread from the store (and tonight, stale). Ditto the pita chips. All the salads, falafel, hummus -- plain, unremarkable, nothing to suggest they're actually made in-house. The "large" kebab portions are around $25 for a single skewer of small pieces, a scoop of rice, and an unremarkable green cafeteria salad. BUT THERE WAS DANCING! It's like visiting a Twilight Zone episode. Picture interior decor of mid-80s fern bar meets Antiques Roadshow saloon. Add a woman wearing a forced smile while performing 30 minutes of sort-of-belly-dancing to recorded music, while patrons tucked dollar bills in her skirt. What a darling place! So cute and we found the hostess/server perfectly sweet. Plenty of seating, no reservations required. We ordered a bottle of St Francis Chardonnay $54, the Mezzo platter and the baked eggplant with feta and pine nuts. Mezzo platter comes with hummus, dolmas, babaganoush, tabuleh salad, a lentil thing and lovely seasoned pita crisps and pitas. Everything was fresh and delicious. Very relaxing vibe here. LEBANESE: impromptu lunch plans with one of my fave people and we picked this spot to check out ! It was a beautiful Saturday we got here right when they opened and sat outside in their parklet. Great to be outdoors . Absolutely great home. We ordered the lamb kebab with basmati rice and it came with green salad. Two kebabs - loved the lamb chunks they were not dry and very well flavored . We also had the hummus and naan appetizer and their hummus was super fresh and delicious . Drinks was Prosecco and a cappuccino at the end which ended up pretty delicious . Our favorite was the mezze plate with the delicious baba ganoush, hummus, and tabbouleh - so good! It comes with some pita chips and pita bread for pairing/dipping. The lamb kebab was also really good - super tender and gamey in a good way! The grilled meat flavors the rice really well. The only thing we didn't love was the beef kebab. It was definitely on the chewier side. The sauces that came with our order were good too - we weren't sure what sauce was for what, but the pink colored one has a kick and we both loved that one! Another thing worth mentioning is, if you have any allergies/food sensitivities or if you're ordering with friends you aren't sharing with, make sure to let the restaurant know to mark your dishes, since our dishes weren't marked which one was lamb kebab vs beef kebab. Very friendly service and really tasty food. We just happened upon Chez for a glass of wine and ended up staying to eat. We just needed something light and Chez was perfect. We had the Meza platter. The hummus was creamy and fresh. It was sprinkled with pomegranate seeds, which totally worked with a surprise punch of flavor. The eggplant was also very creamy and seasoned so well. The tabouli was so fresh and was a great compliment to the platter. The lentils were perfectly cooked and savory goodness. The grape leaves had a hint of citrus that made them pop. The falafel was a bit underwhelming. The pita was interesting as the traditional pieces and then some crunchy seasoned crispy pieces. Now those crispy pitas made just the right dipping vessel. For as good as the Meza platter was the beet salad was the highlight for me. The beets were perfectly cooked and the balsamic they used was just right. The arugula was a supporting cast member as the bowl was loaded with beets. Stop by after work and soak in the casual outdoor atmosphere, good food and great service. Well, my procrastination reduced my window of opportunity until I read the same owners decided to revamp their place into a Mediterranean eatery, which in turn, amped up my motivation to give their new identity a try on a recent saunter on Solano. I was pleased to see an appetizing menu with several healthy options. For lunch, I decided on a two-plate approach. Less pita and more olives would have been preferable but no big. My second plate was the $6 Baked Cauliflower which was similarly flavorful and similarly lacking a description. I had the caesar salad which was great and it was a generously ample portion. That's always appreciated! There was a really good band playing that night. Kind of an Americana style. The wine selection is quite good and the owner was there whom I talked to for awhile. Very friendly. He's Lebanese which explains the cuisine. A very neighborhood type of place with nice people. I spoke to several and they all live close by. Although I only had a salad, I looked around and the food looked really good. I was told the lamb chops are excellent. Came here on a Monday evening with my girlfriend. First time dining out in the great city of Albany. Also first time trying Lebanese cuisine. For appetizers, we had the Mezze Platter. It comprised of hummus, baba ganoush, falafel, grape leaves, tabbouleh, and mujaddara. I wasn't familiar with a lot of dishes included with the appetizers, but I was able to research the ones I wasn't too familiar with. The Baba Ganoush was very good. It was an eggplant dish or dip. It was very creamy and had a nice tart taste. I ate it by itself and with the pita bread and chips provided. The Tabbouleh was like some kind of salsa with a variety of vegetables. I loved the freshness and acidity of the dish. It really paired well with the pita bread and chips. The Mujaddara was a chickpea dish. It was mashed and had a nice creamy texture. Loved it along with the other aforementioned spreads and dips. The hummus was lovely. Glad to have tasted the hummus with the bread and chips. The falafel was nice. Had a nice crunch and acidity. The grape leaves were good with its sour taste and tender outside. The inside was filled with rice. It was pretty good overall. We definitely enjoyed our appetizers here. For our entree, we had the Beef and Lamb Shawarma Plate. The plate was served with Basmati rice and a mixed vegetable salad. I felt that the meat was a little bit overcooked. After a few bites, I could not tell if I was eating beef or lamb. The rice was cooked well and actually paired well with our appetizer. The meat tastes okay once I combined it with the appetizers. Service was pretty good. Our hostess and server was very attentive and friendly. Even though she was the only one there, she made sure that our evening was a pleasant one. The guy who brought us our food was also friendly. The ambiance is pretty nice. It was classy and I have read on Yelp they do live bands sometimes. The setting in this place is quite romantic with some seats also outside. Not too bad of a place. read more
