The Lumber Baron Bar is a small, cozy hotel bar located in the Amway Grand. It's dark and swanky, and not the hidden gem it once was. We stopped in on a Saturday evening and there was a bit of a wait, but we were able to snag a table after about 10 minutes. It was crowded and pretty loud, and service was a bit slow. The drinks are classic and they have a focus on cognac and bourbon, but I'm sure they can whip up most anything. I had an old fashioned and a Manhattan. Both were good, but too pricey to make it a regular spot. Drinks range from $13 for a mocktail to $120 for a drink with Grand Marnier 100 year. Nate got the smoked Old Mahogany which was $20. Definitely big city pricing! They don't serve their own food but you can order in from Ruth's Chris on site. Again, not a spot I will frequent often, but a nice stop for a classy drink. read more

Stopped for a quick nightcap after a really nice dinner at MDRD and equally pleasant pre-dinner drink at Rendezvous. Very cool atmosphere heavily overshadowed by slow service from a rude and impatient blonde waitress that demanded a 20% automatic tip for a group of 6 - after bringing us our bill. The waitress then proceeded to argue with me when I protested the automatic tip and lack of communication prior to being charged. When I suggested that she provide more polite service to earn a better tip she called me a jerk. Bad experience and overpriced drinks. Do not recommend and will not go back. MDRD and Rendezvous to the contrary, were both outstanding. read more

My husband and I were staying in the hotel for an event. One of the other attendees told us about this place and highly recommended it. We found it and decided to give it a try. It is a really class place. The decor is very nice and reminded me of some of the super swanky places in NYC, like the Brandy Library. Our server was very friendly and professional. I cannot recall the cocktails we ordered, but they were wonderful. We did not get any food as the event we were at earlier had a lot of food. Lumber Baron Bar is the best (and most expensive) cocktail experience you could have in Grand Rapids and it's in a hotel. When hotel bars get a bad rap in the rest of the country, they are hidden gems in Michigan. It's in the 1960s luxurious Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in downtown Grand Rapids. If you enter from Monroe Avenue it's directly on your left as you walk into the hotel. Once inside, you'll see it's a small place, but they do a good job at distributing the seats around the room so it doesn't feel cramped. They are smaller tables, but groups can combine tables if they want. There's also a semi-circle bar as you walk in with their liquor stash decorating the back wall along the bar. The drinks themselves are excellent! If you like sweeter drinks, the Pomegranate is a good option. I forget what it's called, but there's one drink for $18 on the menu where they smoke cherry ambers at your table before mixing your bourbon drink. Most drinks range between $13-$18. If you need a drink spot, splurge on Lumber Baron Bar! read more

What a great experience at this charming little bar. We were staying at the Amway Grand for a convention and thought we would seek this place out, since it was in the same building we were staying. It did not let up down. The bar tender clearly knew what he was doing and was able to work the entire room effortlessly. He also took the time to explain the house cocktails in detail. It was greatly appreciate, as we have little knowledge in such matters. Tried my first Harvey Wallbanger and I now a new favorite cocktail! Such a great little spot located inside the Amway Grand Hotel. The ambiance is very romantic and suave. The seating is casual yet comfortable with oversized chairs, benches and pillows. It was very relaxing and classy environment. This is the main reason we chose to get drinks there. The cocktails are also very tasty my husbands was very fresh. I also loved that I could get a warm alcoholic cocktail here and cozy up in the chair. The service was okay, however, I'm that person who asks a lot of questions and wants the suggestions from the staff. And our server didn't quite have the patience for that. It did take a little while for him to get my hubs drink because he forgot but the tastiness made up for his forgetfulness. It is pricy 13-18$ a drink, but again your pay for what you get and the cocktails are crafty. Stopped in for a late night drink. It was my first time there. Service was good and there was a good selection of spirits. A little slow getting our drinks and it wasn't overly busy. Server didn't check on us or ask us if we wanted anything else. When we got the bill I noticed that I was charged for ice--$3. Couldn't find the server to ask about it. We just paid and left. What a gem! The Lumber Baron Bar is the the perfect marriage of cool and classic - like something straight out of Mad Men but in the 21st Century. Beautiful walnut paneling, upholstered leather chairs, candlelit tables and a magnificent bar. Absolutely perfect without crossing the line into stodgy. It's one thing to look nice, but this place delivers the goods too. My gin-raspberry cocktail was refreshing and perfectly balanced, and my husband's table-side smoked bourbon was a sight to behold. (You know it's going to be good when the bartender busts out a blow torch to prepare your drink.) We ordered a few appetizers as well (the ahi tuna and beef carpaccio) and they were both delicious. The service was also friendly and prompt - no complaints there. This place isn't cheap, but you get what you pay for. Our two drinks and two apps came to $80 (including tip), but we felt like we got our money's worth for the experience. We'll definitely be back next time we're feeling too cool for school. read more

They had only one kind of Rye (Bullet). In speaking with the server, she seemed very proud of their "hard to find" liquors. Maybe of Grand Rapids, but they were all from major distillers. All pretty standard fair in my book. No independent scotches, not craft American whiskeys... Fine for a hotel bar, but not really a destination. They need to up their game. read more

Very classy bar, cozy, feels like a secret speakeasy. Waitstaff are attentive, but not obtrusive. Signal for cell phones is almost nonexistent there though (a good thing to be disconnected - not so good if the babysitter is trying to call). This is a "grown folks" bar, don't expect to be doing shots or dancing on the bar. One of my favorite hidden gems downtown that a lot of people don't seem to know about. I love the forest green, dark wood, pictures of wood barons, men who made this area great. it's a quiet atmosphere with a real rich feel to it. Excellent service. This is my go to bar for sure! If your looking for a dance club this isn't it. But if your looking for a mature sit down spot this is the place. The bartenders are awesome and friendly which is why my friend and I continue to come back every time we head downtown. read more

I've lived in GR 25+ years since retiring out of the Navy. Seen a lot of changes and thought this place was a good one. Have gone there several times and thought it was a special place and well worth the high price because of the previous awesome service. They really made me feel special till now. I understand too it gets busy with people and that's not a problem there either. However, tonight tables were left a mess for a while and the guy that cleaned them up obviously was having some kind of physical problem with his back and with his shirt tail out and looking miserable. (Think truck stop.) Service was not even near attentive for the price but the real stick it to you was "The special band members came in" from their gig I would guess around 1115PM and were treated like royalty with 2 immediately attending people that couldn't contain themselves in admiration and attentiveness plus the royal (high 5) bang fists routine between server and band member while we had to flag for service. So much for the commoners in GR while the high priced spread collects our money in concerts and acts like royalty in spite of their loud mouthed foul language etc. Hope we weren't in their way nor inhibited the staff here in getting their big tip! And I thought I had left Chicago behind for a regular 'real' world in GR. Go figure on that. I would like to say the word is disappointing but it really is more like disgusted with a place that was in the past worth the extra money. May be a part of Ruth Crisp I think but could be wrong??? Sad for Ruth Crisp if they are. Went to Z's restaurant afterward and was treated VERY MUCH better and more attentively by a waitress that was more hard working than these tail dragging individuals. Very shallow Hollywood sad for this hotel and bar. Guess the petty limited money handled by more calloused hands doesn't cut it here. Yep, I am bitter about it. Too many hard working places that give a lot more for the price as so many of us do day to day working and a lot of them don't charge you $20 to park either. Do your homework. No commoners welcome here with open arms unless you are all that is available for a tip that night.
