Any time is a good time for waffles. They're a vehicle for so many sweet and savory ingredients, in my opinion. So when my family and I were walking around downtown Grand Rapids and needed a place to eat breakfast, we popped into Social Misfits because their menu is basically 90% waffles. My kids love waffles. Every kid loves waffles. Waffles it is! This is a great restaurant for families (because ... waffles), but also a great restaurant for adults because they have a nice selection of creative cocktails in the evening, and coffee in the morning. Social Misfits is basically waffles, alcohol and caffeine, in that order. When we visited in the morning, the adults opted for coffee (really great black coffee!) and the kids both opted for the Little Lad, a waffle topped with strawberries, blueberries and chantilly cream (basically whipped cream, but a little sweeter and whipped a little longer). Both of my children ate most of their waffle, which is a big thing, considering they usually eat like birds. We also got the Son of a Biscuit, which was a garlic parmesan waffle topped with chicken sausage gravy and a fried egg. You could add fried chicken to the mix for an extra $6 (we did not). This one was fine, but the egg was way overcooked! Oh well. Lastly: We got the Ol' Blue Eyes, a waffle topped with blueberry compote, lemon curd, whipped ricotta and graham cracker crumbs. This one tasted amazing, but there was so much blueberry compote and lemon curd that it made the waffle a bit soggy. I think the chef was feeling generous with the toppings, but homie needed to hold back a tad. Sometimes, a little bit goes a long way! Fifty percent less gloppy stuff would have made this waffle dish 100% better. If you ain't really about that waffle life, then not to worry. Social Misfits also has a few "not waffles" items on the menu, like salads, sandwiches and a couple of bar snacks. But I think if you visit this restaurant, you need to just embrace waffles. There are more than a dozen different waffles on the menu. They're all fun and well-thought-out. Pick one and eat waffles for breakfast, lunch or dinner. read more

My London Fog was absolutely fantastic! It was one of the best ones I have ever had and I drink them often!!!! I loved the lavender sprig on top. The grilled cheese was AMAZING! Wow! The bar mix was fabulous, I think the only thing that could make it better is it was served warm. The espresso martini was the best I've had in Grand Rapids by far. I went with my brother on a Saturday and it was pretty packed, though luckily there were still a few tables to spare (we did go around noon, which is the prime time for lunch/brunch). Visited during a day out at Art Prize with a gluten-free friend. Had to update the review to say that she LOVED the waffle. It was perfect and on sight we couldn't tell which was which (except for the marker). She was delighted to find there was even GF Graham cracker crumble, commenting that often GF people just miss out on the fun extras when a dish is made with a GF option. I won't lie, I don't get downtown nearly as much as I used to and I'm definitely not patient enough to hunt for street parking, but luckily Nate drove us down for a Wednesday night House Sesh at Social Misfits recently. We did find a parking spot after driving around for a bit! There are parking garages nearby as well. Each Wednesday evening they have a DJ which makes it a bit of a fun party vibe. I wasn't sure what to expect since it was our first time checking it out, but I was happy that the music was great and not super loud. We arrived around 7 pm and the music had already started but we were able to get a seat in the main bar area. It got pretty packed later on so it was nice to get there a bit early. The space is cozy so if you have a large group you may have to split up or wait a bit to be seated. It had been a while since I'd been to Social Misfits, so I was happy to see they've expanded their menu a bit to include some sandwiches and salads in addition to their fun waffle creations. We ordered the Teen Spirit and the rocket salad to split, as well as a few cocktails throughout our visit. The first drink we ordered (espresso martini) took quite a bit of time to come to the table, but they were definitely getting slammed with a lot of drink orders. The drink was tasty and we enjoyed sharing it. Our food came out shortly after and looked amazing - the waffle was a huge and the salad was fresh and presented nicely. I love savory food so the Teen Spirit waffle was right up my alley, covered with deliciously cheesy mac and cheese, and we also added the buttermilk fried chicken which had a great crunch while still juicy inside. The salad was so tasty with goat cheese, candied nuts, and sweet potato. I was hoping it wouldn't be too sweet, and it wasn't. I'd definitely get both of these dishes again, but everything we saw around us looked so good. We stayed a bit to enjoy the music so had another round of drinks - the lav saz and the McMisfit shake, which is their take on a boozy shamrock shake. Yum! I loved both of these drinks, especially the shake for a nice dessert treat. Prices are a little high here, but it's a prime downtown location and the quality of food and drink was great. Plus the waffle was generously sized and could've been shared. I'm looking forward to coming back again soon! read more

Popped in for a cocktail after shopping. This place has it all - Andy Warhol art, stuffed mounts, a Polaroid of Michael Cera behind the bar and pictures of white cat and SO MUCH MORE. Very eclectic vibe and we are pretty generic compared to most people there - not sure we were cool enough to be there, but we sat at the bar and the lovely person that made our cocktails was so kind and personable. This place is in a great location!! The building is beautiful and decorated very tastefully. I guess I pictured more of a sultry-esque bar/coffee shop vibe. Which is what I was going for since all of the coffee shops close so early! It is definitely not a place to go and read a book etc., without sounding like a fogie, the music was nice but way too loud!, I was solo but if I was enjoying a meal with someone, it would have been extremely difficult to have a conversation. Fun ambiance and decor with plenty to catch your eye here. We stopped in on a Friday around 5 and sat at the bar and had espresso martinis that were delicious. We tried the RGB waffle with smoked salmon, cream cheese and caviar on an everything waffle and it melted in our mouths. The savoryness of the waffle with a tinge of sweet complimented the smoked salmon and smooth cream perfectly. The arugula salad with goat cheese, candied pecans and roasted sweet potato was also really good and they were generous with the pecans and goat cheese which was appreciated.
