The premise is awesome and I have had nothing but great experiences shopping or chatting and drinking coffee/tee in tea in the cafe until today. They feel its ok to chase customers out of the place with "music that sinks to the lowest denominator, rap mixes that rip off decades of musicians from blues to hiphop, and assault women with mysoginistic lyrics and vulgar language as low as it can go. A whole 30 minutes as I waited for my drink and fumbled with trying to get my usbc headphones to run the sound through that particular port. I am all for the appropriately placed F bomb, but the liberal use of it in those sound bytes was not it. So, for example of appropriate, the management of this store/venue/coffee shop can F-off. I am not going to sit here and smile and be the girl that thinks only about being quiet and taking it in every way you can think of. read more

When I walked through the door I felt like I jumped into a time machine, taking me back to what I would assume the 70's felt like haha. They have a wide selection of vinyls that highlight all genres. It is perfect for a quick date or time with friends or anyone who loves music. Jonathan helped as at the bar & he was really cool. They serve coffee, beer & seltzers. They have a stage for live music & host different events. The highlight for me was the private booths that you can sit in & listen to your record. My only suggestion would be creating booths for groups of a larger size. Maybe something accommodating for groups of 3-4? Overall, it's a cute experience. They also have a small stage for live music sometimes. I love the experiences of being able to sip a drink and shop, and Square Cat allows that. I got the honey lavender latte, and it was pretty nice. It didn't taste that strongly of lavender though. My boyfriend really liked his mocha, per his opening quote. I don't have a record player, but I imagine if I were that cool I'd spend a lot more time shopping and sipping here. So if you are that cool, you should go do that! read more

To kick off My Mother and son's birthday weekend, we ventured over to fountain square to pop into Bovaconti for a light something to start our day. We walked down the street and immediately came upon Square Cat Vinyl and immediately fell in love, there was vinyl for days ,CD'S, Even a small movie and took section. We all began venturing around finding awesome music and the prices were some of the best ive seen in my search. They had some titles I had a hard time locating and some I had forgotten about but realized I wanted. I discovered grab bags of CD'S and LP'S as well. The CD'S were 5 for 3.00 and the LP'S were 10 for 15.00. Jazz was playing as we discovered every inch of the store. They have a cool place to sit and enjoy a beverage or listen to music. Cool sitting nooks to listen to music and the icing on the cake was a stage. They had some wonderful movie titles on DVD. We kept showing each other different finds we thought the other might like as well. When it was time to check out, I disc9v3red some cool buttons, which I love. And with my being a junk journal artist free stickers made my visit EVEN sweeter. It was a unanimous decision that we would all be back sometime soon. The cashier was the absolute kindest person, he laughed and joked with us during check out. For this to be the second stop on the birthday adventures, we were off to an absolute great start and couldnt wait to see what thw rest of the day would bring. read more

Vinyl is making a comeback and there is no better place to start that comeback than here. The staff here is very friendly and welcoming. They were truly the best. The sell all types of wax. Is that still the term, wax? Anyway, the store is well organized and very clean. They have a huge selection of new and used tracks. They also have 2 cubicles that are set up with lounge chairs, record players and headphones were you can sit and listen. The shop doubles as a coffee shop and serves coffee and pastries and has a small dining area and bar seating available to hang out. There is a stage in the dining area where, I assume that they have acoustic vocalist, poetry and other cool/hip stuff there on certain days. There is free street parking in front of the store and on nearby streets. I will be the first to admit that records are a bit pricer than you digital download, but I hear that the sound is very different and more crisp. As an added bonus they have some extended hours, 8 P to 8 A on most days. I am glad that I stumbled onto this place. It is nice to checkout, even if you are not a record guy or gal. There are also two different listening booths, that are set up in 70s vintage. The rules for listening to a record: Must be an unopened, used (yellow tag) record, priced at under $100. I usually pop in to Square Cat before I see a show at the Hifi. They serve coffee and beer in the back which is awesome. I've working my way through trying all of their different coffees! Haven't had a bad one yet. Whilst drinking my coffee I peruse the 1000s of albums they have. If you are looking for something chances are Square Cat has it! New releases, super old, the Good Will Hunting soundtrack, the list goes on and on. Last time I went was with a buddy for a show. They put on concerts on this little stage in the back opposite of the bar. Ghost Funk Orchestra killed it in there. So did the opener who I'm blanking on.... There are surprisingly good acoustics for it being a record store! Definitely come check out a show sometime. Or stop in to buy some records. Or just get a good coffee or beer! read more

I visit various record stores wherever I travel and this one is very unique. I have never been in a record store that serves coffee, beer and wine. I dropped in one morning so it was coffee for me. There is a nice selection of records at prices that one would expect from an indie record store. You aren't going to find a Pink Floyd album at a bargain price - seriously, what do you expect? I didn't see any unreasonable prices here. Another unique feature of the store is comfortable listening cubbies so you can check out a record before you buy it. There is also a small stage where, i assume, local artists perform from time to time. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. Looking for me?! Catch me in this adorable coffee shop in the back on Square Cat Vinyl, eating a bagel sandwich (only sold on Saturdays) and sipping a Moroccan Mint tea. This space is seriously cool. The front half is a vinyl store with racks of vinyls galore. The back half hosts a big coffee bar that sells a huge variety of coffee drinks, teas, kombucha, beer and wine. They also sold Gomez BBQ snack mix and 4 Birds Bakery (their next door neighbor) cookies. On Saturdays, they make stellar bagel sandwiches - I can't wait to go get one. There's a big wooden bar in the middle of the room you can work at, or you can cozy into one of the small round tables with chairs they have set up as well. There's free wifi and was a decent crowd of cool peeps on laptops, chugging away on a sunny Sunday morning. I feel so hip for hanging out here. read more

Square Cat Vinyl has been in the neighborhood for a couple/few years, and is owned by the vet who runs (I think) the Fountain Square Animal Clinic just a block down. Apparently his cat is named Square, so he named the record store after the cat. One thing is for sure: this place isn't square! [pls clap for my dad joke] They have plenty of records, if that's what you're looking for. I'm not, since I don't do records, but I love the vibe. They have coffee and alcohol, and some seating in the back. During the day you could treat it like a coffee shop and bring your laptop. Some nights they do concerts. It is eclectic to say the least, but it's weird in the best way. It's located next to a vintage store and just a block away from a vegetarian restaurant, so you can make a day of exploring nearby shops after you grab a drink. I ordered the Ginger Oat Milk latte, and my friend ordered a cappuccino. We both enjoyed our drinks but weren't in the mood for a beer. Unfortunately, there was no live performance for us to watch, but the overall experience made a nice day out. A rainy day at a coffee shop? Always a blast. This is such a cute and funky shop with a huge space, bar area, and stage. It seems like they just reopened and will be starting shows around September. They have your regular coffee menu with some bakery items such as coffee cake/lemon breads, along with tea, and alcoholic drinks. They have a couple of tables and a bar seating area, but there doesn't seem to be many outlets around the seating. The espressos I had were pretty tasty and the staff are really friendly, so it seems like a great reopening for square cat and I look forward to being back! read more

I would be very cautious buying records from here. At the front of the store, records are getting direct sunlight through the front windows. I don't understand how a record store wouldn't know that this is going to warp and completely ruin vinyls. The store is also generally unorganized and difficult to find what you are looking for. 10/10 would recommend hanging out here. While in town visiting my brother I was in need of a place to work that had internet. On my way to a different cafe close by I decided to stop in and check out the vinyl collection. To my surprise not only is it a record store but there are breakfast burritos and lattes. Turns out it's a cool cafe/record store/ music venue from the looks of the stage and they have designated areas to listen to vinyl or you have the option of sitting at the bar (they serve alcohol too), or getting a table if you need more space. There are sooo many albums here that you are sure to find something you can add to your collection. Whether you are a novice or long time collector you can appreciate the availability of all genres. Be sure to check out the Bargain Bins. Most albums here are $3 or under. My favorite find was the K-tel Super Hits #22. Brought me straight back to the 1980s! I visited the store with two collector friends. I was just along for the fun. I personally found most records highly priced compared to usual shops with friends. I don't have a vinyl collection and I don't intend to start one but I liked Square Cat. It's fun to browse and the cafe in the back is a pretty cool place to chill out. I guess it's pretty chill on the weekends when there isn't a show. I'm also not a big coffee drinker but they do have beers on tap so it's a good spot to relax. I ended up having a beer, but didn't want to overdo it for dinner so got an iced tea for my second. They make their iced teas from their regular selection so I got to choose which blend I wanted, which is nice. I ended up with a bacon biscuit as well and it was pretty good too- I know I said I didn't want to spoil dinner with a beer but then got a snack, it was worth it and I still had a full meal anyway. read more

Starting this review to shoutout the kindest staff! I rolled up to get a tea and burrito and the person (I wish I would have gotten her name to shout her out) was one of the kindest people! Square Cat is a place I've popped into explore and once I found our Gold Leaf was slinging burritos there... I knew the world was right. Visiting on a weeknight we probably stood out like a sore thumb here because we weren't one of the locals. Def seems like a spot that attracts mostly regulars and locals, but we were on a mission for after-dinner coffee and this place is open late! They are a records shop, which is cool, but also have a coffee shop in the back. They use Tinker coffee and have a decent menu of options available. They also serve alcohol and have a seating area for under 21, and over 21 at the "bar." It's a small area and I don't know that I would take kids in during the evening only because of the colorful language and conversations that were present when we visited. This was from customers, not necessarily staff (although I had a hard time identifying who the staff was). It does seem more like a 21+ place than family-friendly which is the reason why I rated it 4 stars rather than 5. And because of the confusion over staff, no one greeted us when we arrived, nor was present upfront in the records area. A bit confusing for those who are non-regulars. I had a latte and it was great. The paintings and artwork throughout are cool and the seating area to conversate is nice as well. Gonna give them a try again during the day! read more

I stopped in to see the newest mural by Jules "MuckRock" Muck that was added to the interior of the shop in Aug 2019. The mural "Bowie Kitty" shows a large white cat with the Ziggy Stardust makeup made popular by David Bowie. Very cool with a sense of whimsy. The shop also has a lot of vinyl available by alphabet within genre, pretty standard set up. Unfortunately, like many vinyl shops, finding what you are looking for is hit or miss. I found a lot of artists I like, but not the particular albums. There is also a coffee shop in the back on the left. I must have had bad timing because nobody was there to pour coffee or ask questions about the availability of albums. Most of the people seated there were zoned in on their computers and I walked through the entire store without being acknowledged by anyone. A guy did come in as I was about to leave and made a comment about the gathering of homeless individuals hanging out front (they moved on though). Not sure if the guy who came in worked there or not. So, if you like browsing without being interrupted, maybe this is a place to check out. Hopefully, if you find something, you can have as good of luck finding someone to pay for it. While in the area for First Friday, decided to stop here to browse some of the vinyl. When you first enter the store, the front facing wall has all of the new/popular records and the new 'used' records which tends to be my go-to spot. The store is conveniently located in Fountain Square directly across the street from the Murphy Arts building. You can normally find free parking on the street or in a lot behind the building. The store has a huge and diverse selection of vinyl to browse. I ended up purchasing a record at a fairly reasonable price. The staff were pretty welcoming and helpful. It can get a bit cramped when lots of people roll in but it does feel pretty spacious for most part. They also have a really neat listening station to check out records before you purchase along with a stage where live musicians will perform on occasion. Its a neat spot and I'd recommend checking it out if you are in the area. read more

I don't know what record collector would give this place a good review as this is the worst record store in Indiana. It was a joke before the pandemic and it's most definitely a joke now. They shut down longer than any other record store just to re open up with all extremely overpriced record that are all goodwill record quality with a collection of all pop junk music top 100s vinyl. Definitely an insult to record collectors having to sift through unalphabetized crap only to find nothing after A-Z the store. Leave coffee to Starbucks and leave vinyl to a real record store or even goodwill is better. What a joke! 0/5! I wouldn't come back if this was the last record store in the world. read more
