This restaurant was highly recommended and we went with friends for the first time. I was very impressed with the look of the place and the beautiful way the tables were set. We hadn't noticed it before because it is not very visible from the busy intersection. The owner came and welcomed us and listed all the specials which sounded amazing. He took all 4 orders without writing anything down even though we all made small changes to the original specials. The service was excallent and the food outstanding. Every dish was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious with just the right amount of seasoning and spices. The food was real authentic Italian food similar to the way it is served in Italy. First off , the staff was so friendly and helpful. We were here with two of my friends kids, and they were so nice, patient and accommodating with them. You don't see that a lot. We've ordered the same dinners over the last year and there is no consistency? In April, we ordered a beautiful Bolognese and it knocked our socks off. The atmosphere is very friendly and the food is exceptional; even standard Italian dishes are made with extraordinary care. Adrian is the consummate host. A visit from him to your table enhances the experience. There are so many Italian restaurants in New Jersey, but Luna Rossa is a head above the rest. The restaurant has no prominent signage and is not easy to find. The interior was nicely appointed, warm, and welcoming. Our large party of eleven was easily accommodated. Note that menu posted on their website does not reflect recent price increases. The large menu is supplemented with many daily specials. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable, although service was a bit slow at times. He made a mistake with one order, but that error was satisfactorily corrected. Almost everyone in our party complimented the quality of the food, which was also of adequate quantity. One exception was the Antipasto I received which was far below my expectations. The "cold cuts" named in the menu consisted of four, small pieces of Prosciutto. Lots of canned green olives and dried tomatoes dominated the dish, along with some hard cheese squares. The best part was the few slices of fresh tomato and mozzarella. The drizzled-on balsamic dressing was sparingly applied for presentation rather than for taste or enjoyment. The artichokes cited in the menu were nowhere to be found. I can only surmise that either the chef never read the menu, or the restaurant was poorly supplied. Probably the worst antipasto I've ever been served. Avoid it! Keep in mind that my rating will reflect my personal experience. Others in my party would likely rate it higher. read more

I went with an insalata arugula with grilled chicken. It contained baby arugula, roasted peppers, tomatoes, mozzarella, with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. This was very tasty. They did not skimp out on the chicken at all, and it was perfectly cooked. The balsamic was of the thick variety which went well with everything. All ingredients seemed fresh too. Went here with family and was provided the private room for a surprise party- staff was very nice! Pre-fixe menu, but you could chose your entree. We passed around apps, which were Fried calamari, mozzarella/tomato salad and eggplant rollatini which was good! We also each got small caesar salads. I ordered Veal Marsala - it was a bit chewy and hard to cut so sadly didn't love it. But I also tried chicken piccata and it was delish! The sauce was perfect with the penne pasta and chicken was cooked very good. Not too much breading either - we then passed around assorted desserts! They offered coffee, expresso, and tea. I love this place! I loved it when I lived in the area! And I love it now that I live on the west coast! When I'm back in NJ visiting, I make it a priority to have lunch or dinner here. A few things about the restaurant before I get to the food. - The restaurant decor hasn't changed in 25 years! It looks a bit dated; maybe time for an easy update imho. - It's BYOB which I like; easy to bring your favorite red to go with a delicious Italian meal. - They bring fresh Italian bread to the table along with hot peppers in garlic and olive oil. So good. - They grow their own tomatoes and herbs in their garden. When tomatoes are in season, get the Caprese Salad. - Danielle is my favorite waitress, so friendly and informative. My favorite meal 20+ years ago, and it's still on the menu, is the flounder stuffed with crabmeat. It's light, melts in your mouth, and gets a bit of richness from the crab. It comes with pasta and I choose the cavatelli with broccoli, olive oil and garlic. It's sooooo good! This visit my friend ordered the flounder, and loved it, and I chose the Veal Parmigiana since it's rarely, if ever, on a menu in Portland. When it arrived, the veal was cold. Understandably they probably fry the veal cutlets during prep, then add sauce and cheese and stick under the broiler. Unfortunately, mine wasn't heated through so had to send it back. It was good, but even better the next day when I heated up the leftovers and everything was hot, cheese bubbling. We started the meal with a Caprese Salad since their own tomatoes were ripe and just picked from the garden. A Caprese with Jersey tomatoes is Heaven on a Plate! We had a lovely evening, a definite 4 star experience. I intended to come back for lunch one day to enjoy the flounder, but plans changed and I never made it back. Today my wife and I tried the new Luna Rosa which is now under new ownership in bedminster New Jersey it was a wonderful experience. There are so many restaurants in the area and this one is definitely a cut above. The owner Adrian was so accommodating and helpful with recommendations and let a sample two small garlic shrimp appetizers one on toast and one on a tortilla with guacamole that were outstanding followed by a spinach salad with prosciutto and candied walnuts that was delightful. Or entrees where stuff flounder with lobster and shrimp and a delicious stuffed pork chop pounded thin with mozzarella spinach and prosciutto. The service was great very attentive and friendly there were a few parties going on and the atmosphere was a lot of fun it's a BYOB so the prices are reasonable. Definitely give them a try you won't be disappointed. We didn't try the desserts because we own ladybossbakehouse.com but we will definitely them a try at some point. We've been coming here for 30 years. We liked the old place but the new owners have made this maybe the best Italian restaurant in NJ. Everything is great. My wife ordered the Caprese Salad which is made with and listed as made with Buffalo Mozzarella. Buffalo Mozzarella is soft and creamy not hard. I would think that at $15.99 you could afford to use the correct cheese. The eggplant parmigiana was no better or worse than any Pizzaria but twice the price. I ordered the Linguine with red clam sauce and received Linguine with Marinara sauce and 8 clams circled around the plate, no clams in the sauce. About 6 ounces of pasta and 8 clams for $28.00. The dish didn't look anything like the photos online and the 8 clams were rubbery (Very disappointing). The bread they serve with dinner is pizza dough cut up and baked. They need to figure out if they are a Pizzaria or a restaurant. You can't charge people restaurant prices and serve them Pizzaria quality food. read more
