Went here for a Pappy Van Winkle release the night before Thanksgiving 2012. There was also a Goose Island Bourbon County Stout release at the same time and only two people working the shop with about 50 patrons. Both employees (owners? managers? hobos? who knows) were totally overwhelmed and never mentioned that for the Goose Island release, you get in line, but for the Pappy, you get a ticket at the door (two different processes, not confusing at all.../sarcasm). Because there were only about 6 bottles of Pappy, the first three people that had tickets bought them up. Those three were there before me which is fair enough, but knowing the process ahead of time would have saved me waiting for an hour for nothing. Also, had they mentioned that process via their social media (which is where they announced the Pappy release in the first place), I would have gotten there much earlier to improve my chances of getting a ticket. All-in-all, a waste of my time for absolutely nothing, which could have been prevented by some basic customer service. Went in on a Saturday night, looking for a particular spirit. I was completely ignored. The women behind the bar did not even look up from what I'm sure was soooo important. Then when the other finished with a guest she too ignored me. I then proceeded to walk out still with no acknowledgement. Customer serevice is free and makes such a difference. I went there because my instrument gets repaired next door at A440 strings, and Janna V has been telling me about the place since Jesus was in short pants. Tastings... in store? I thought I was in Sonoma for about 10 minutes. They had a Zin that blew my mind and despite the bottle shock, it still seemed like a good deal considering the quality, the fact that I didn't know the vintner, and the bread I save buying wine here rather than flying to Cali to get it! Sadly the bottle was corked. Expensive vinegar. I sent an email, and never received an answer. Called them up, went right in and got a replacement. Alot of stores would question you returning what I consider to be an expensive bottle without a receipt. They didn't flinch. Not as big as Sam's, but this is apples and oranges. If I lived closer, this place would have all my booze business. read more

Shortly after the American Homebrewers Association published their 50 Best Beers of America, I really wanted to track down as many of the less familiar brews on the list. One of the staff, some kind of Beer Jedi, went way out of his way to help. He had taken the list I was carrying around with me to help me with my search. He then proceeded to mark next to each beer whether they were seasonal, regional or attainable. It was pretty damn impressive...he didn't miss one. Without that insight, my local search may have never ended. Well, I have to say this place is nice to have on a stressful Monday night. The wine Selection is extensive and the prices are decent. The staff is very nice and they keep a database of what wines you purchase and the frequency of your purchase. If you are in the area I would suggest stop by Tuesday-Friday and try their back lounge area. To put is simple I would come and have come back here often. One thing I would say they don't have is a certified wine taster like Binny's. All in all this a great neighborhood store. read more

Came here after the oyster fest was done on Saturday. Had about an hour to drink so our group of 7 bought a couple bottles of red and had a seat in the adjoining room. Such a cute place! Loved the wine glass chandeliers and overall dark and cozy feeling. There's a kitchen in there too and I could see and smell some good stuff coming out to the other tables. Unfortunately they close at 11:00 so we had to chug the last bit of vino cause we were getting the boot (I swear we weren't rowdy) Didn't really understand why we were asked to chug when another couple in there was taking their time and still in there eating and drinking after we left....still a nice place to grab a bottle and enjoy. read more

My husband and I rented out Lush on Roscoe for my 40th birthday. We had about 35 people. Pablo the manager was nice enough helping me plan, but kind of laid back and not as proactive as I hoped - I was disappointed that he didn't remind me the deadline of when I needed to put my food order in for the party, so we missed out on the beef tenderloin and lobster sandwiches. But he assured me that he'd pull what we could together for an amazing menu and night. I had no choice but to trust... Well, the night was amazing. The food was delicious (we even had some of the tenderloin/lobster, they made it happen). The wine choices Pablo helped us select were perfect, and the service was incredible. The staff walked around filling up our glasses and bringing out new food. The kimchi/cheese sandwiches - incredible. Such a fantastic party. I would give Lush 5 stars but the planning had me worried. Went here the other night for wine and cheese. We've been before and had no issues but this time the service was pretty awful- made us feel awkward and bad. The waiter was very snippy. Both of the wines we ordered said to pair with their goat cheese, so, we asked to order that as a pairing. The waiter acted so confused and snippy and said, "um what do you mean goat cheese? Like one slice?" I wanted to have patience but it's like come on, you literally put that on the menu and now you're making us feel dumb for asking to buy it?? Not only that but there were several times he made snippy comments, made us feel dumb about the wine or food, etc. He even commented about how my spouse spilled some honey off the cheeseboard- just made us feel stupid. I absolutely love this store! The people behind the counter know a ton about good wine and are so happy to impart their vast knowledge with you. There is a very good selection here in whatever price range you're willing to spend. My husband also likes that they have some interesting beers in their cooler, just waiting for someone like him to give them a good home. I really love that they have so many different bottles open behind the counter as well. I was unsure about something I was buying, so the lady behind the counter popped open a bottle and let me taste it before i took it home. Now that is fun and helpful! The Lush shop makes me want to drink more often. In a classy alcoholique kind of way. Last winter I went into the shop for the first time because I had to go to a holiday cocktail/cookie decorating party. I talked to one of the people behind the tasting bar because I wasn't sure what I wanted or needed & she convinced me to make spiced rum cocktails to offset the sweetness of the cookies. I think we made the drinks too strong when left to our own devices, resulting in some strange-looking cookies at the end of the night, but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, I've returned a bunch of times since. They have a good amount of wines in all different price ranges (so if you are one step above Trader Joe's on a regular basis like me, fear not, there's something for you too) and if the shop isn't busy the people behind the tasting bar will usually open something for you to try. Plus they host tastings most Sundays. They also carry beer & liquor - not in great quantities like their wine selection, but the quality of what they get in the shop is pretty awesome. Hello, Dogfish Head bottles that I didn't think were available outside of the brewery... I also joined their wine club & get 3 new bottles every 3 months (speaking of which... I want to like it here. Good wine, fair selection of beer (though it isn't great), nice decor, and a fun place to sit outside and enjoy a good drink and food. And it's close to my house! But . . . . . . every single time I go here I'm put off by the people who work behind the counter. I know people really like this place. I see them! When I've been in I've seen people standing at the counter trying wine. I've seen people who work at the store be helpful to customers who come in. I've seen the staff be friendly with patrons. But every time I go I'm sort of squinted at, rarely spoken to, and my purchase is handled as quickly and perfunctorily as possible. It seems clear they cater to a specific sort of clientele--what that is I don't know, but it's not me--and I've experienced the cold shoulder so many times I now shop elsewhere. read more

If frequenting Lush means I have a problem, then I think it's a wonderful problem to have. Standing in front of the craft beer fridge, I get this strange tingling in my toes, a bead of sweat forms on the back of my neck, and my fingers twitch with anticipation. What brews do I spring for this time? It seems like Lush scores some rare and limited releases that other bottle shops only dream about. Plus, they have an ample supply of '08 Founders Breakfast Stout that never disappoints (it's the best $6 beer you will get...ANYWHERE). I've only purchased vino a couple times from here, each time on staff recommendations (since I don't know a Cabernet from a cabaret), and each time very happy with the selection. The staff is super friendly, unpretentious, and always willing to answer questions. It can get a bit busy, but good help is worth the wait. Some people jones for money, drugs, or sex. Love this place! We've lived in the neighborhood and stop in for wine all the time. My husband also threw a surprise 30th birthday for me here right after the tasting room opened and it was phenomenal. We recently went back during the week with our pup and sat outside for drinks and snacks. We bought an extremely reasonably priced bottle inside, were helped by the fantastically friendly Phyllis who fell in love with our dog, Milo, bringing him treats as we waited for our wine to chill. The service is a LITTLE slow, but this is not a restaurant and we were in no rush, so we didn't mind. I appreciated the time everyone on the staff took with us, even if it was making sure we felt like we were ordering the right cheeses. Note: the cheese and meat boards are GENEROUS. We ordered both and had to get a doggie bag. You should definitely try the chickpeas as they are addicting, too. We will absolutely be back as usual to buy wine, but this might be our new, go-to spot for awesome outdoor dining in the neighborhood. read more

Pretty nice selection of wines.... also wine samples always a plus. There is one thing that made me take down a star. A single bottle of Dog Fish Head 90 minute IPA was $5.95. I can get the same bottle at the Hop Leaf (a bar not liquor store that you can drink a glass of wine in) for $5.00 EDIT: I got an email from a representative from LUSH and told me that they had the 90 minute IPA priced wrong and now it is corrected. So for such amazing customer service I had to give them the star that was missing. read more

I don't know. This place is not as good as it used to be. First of all. I want to buy something special and I need help when I go into lush. Few if any of your wines or liquors are well known. So when I walk in I expect help. Not indifference. Groceries seemed like a good idea but the place seems in chaos. Owners or whoever are working barely lift an eye. I get it times are stressed but stick to wines and customer service. And enforce social distancing in the store. I've tried twice and no more. Poor to mediocre experience. read more

I've been back MANY times since my original review and every time has been great. The staff are very knowledgeable and super helpful. My favorite is that they have 2 shelves of featured $10 wines - half white and half red - for you to quickly look through and buy one to use for a BYOB dinner or party. This past weekend, a group of friends and I went to their Snacks lounge to celebrate my birthday. it was great! We each bought bottles of wine (they chilled the whites for us), then they brought the wine and some glasses to us in the Snacks portion of the business. We also ordered some food - a cheese platter, truffle oil popcorn, and chickpea bites - to eat while we drank and chatted the night away. We took over a large part of the lounge, and they put together two huge farmhouse tables for us so we could all sit together. The staff really are great! I highly recommend this place, either as a place to buy your booze or a place to chill with friends. I will definitely be back soon! read more

This place is the mecca for me. We recently went to Lush in Rosco Village and had a fantastic time! This is one of the coolest concepts I know and I don't know why there aren't more of them! Oh, if you didn't know - the "concept": A liquor store and bar in one! With LUSH, gone are the awkward encounters with friends over how much to spend on a bottle of wine, or who wants to get beer, and who wants to get liquor. Just walk in and grab a bottle off the shelf and enjoy! It's really that easy, and the bartenders will help you choose some great bottles. What's more? They have a fantastic array of reds and whites for $10 - you seriously can't beat that. The snack bar has great food for you to snack on while you drink, as well. This place is great, however the Roscoe location has some specific rules, so I would call in to check and make sure that no one has rented out the bar for the night. read more

We have been going to Lush for years to buy wine or beer and have made the recent discovery of the small lounge they now have next door. The lounge area mainly has appetizers and small plates which go very well with the wine or beer that you can buy from the store next door (don't worry you don't have to go outside). We bought a bottle of wine which they flash chilled for us and brought it to us in the lounge area. We ordered a couple of the small plates including the chick peas (amazing!) and the BLT (fantastic!). The atmosphere is very casual where we just talked and drink and nibbled at our food for a couple of hours. I can't wait to go back and find another bottle of wine and work our way further through the menu - perhaps taking a harder look at the cheese and meat plates that they offer. I would 100% recommend planning an event here. I worked with Phyllis to plan a baby shower at this location, and it went off without a hitch. We were allowed to use the back area for a few hours on Sunday. The setting was cute and intimate for our group of 18. Lush provided delicious snacks and wine for our group. Phyllis was amazing to work with and answered all of my questions really quickly. She was also around during the event, serving guests and helping with whatever we needed. An inviting place on Roscoe St to stumble in and grab your alcoholic-beverage-of-choice to go. Great plus is if you're walking your dog (and don't want him/her stolen from the street corner) you can bring them inside and make your purchase - both species feeling happier and tails wagging. Selection of beer choices are limited - but they usually have something I'm interested in or a grab something I would have not tried otherwise and mix-and-match a six-pack. Prices are variable and as long as you check the sticker price before you bring it up, you should not be surprised. read more

In terms of service, food, and price, this was among the worst dining experiences of my thirteen years in Chicago. It's a real shame too because I live in the neighborhood and would love to see Roscoe Street become a more popular dining destination. Lush is a charming space with a wide selection of wine and lovely outdoor seating, so I thought it had potential. We had a couple of servers, both of whom had all the enthusiasm of someone making a hostage video. They were also inattentive. Our water glasses disappeared, never to be seen again and it was hard to get anyone's attention. It just really felt like every employee wanted to be anywhere but there. I had the Krabby Patty, which consisted of two pale, under-cooked shrimp patties and a side of soft, borderline-cold French fries. My wife ordered a steak salad with the dressing on the side. After an inexplicably long wait between finishing the charcuterie plate, which was admittedly good, the salad was delivered with a simple announcement, "we're out of steak". We were surprised that in the long interim no server came by to see if she wanted to change her order. Then, the waiter was gone before we realized the salad was doused in dressing. When we were finally able to get someone's attention and point out that her salad was a far cry from what she ordered, the waiter responded, "but we're not charging you for the steak". I laughed incredulously and the waiter clearly sensed that his response ticked me off. He never made eye contact again and our check was practically tossed at us. I hope that we caught them on a really bad night and that other diners have a better experience. As I said, I'd love to see this place succeed, but I won't be going back. read more
