Right now I'm trying really really hard to think of some positives for this place. I'm no expert on Portuguese bbq, but when you overcook the meat, it's really hard to eat. I work a block from this place and for years wondered if the food was any good. I decided to ignore the low Yelp ratings and visit this place because I needed some quick grub. When I entered Luso's I saw a large family eating at the back and a bunch of local getting takeout and I was feeling good about my decision. In the back I can see a huge grate of chicken and ribs being cooked in an indoor grill. Smoke and aroma of cooked meats fill the restaurant. The interior of Luso's is nothing to write home about. It's old and dated and reminds you of a small cafeteria with a grill on the other side of a partition. I gave my order to an indifferent employee who spoke and understood English. I ordered a steak sandwich and Combo chicken & pork ribs (half order). I know I know that's a lot for lunch, but I figured I can eat some of it for dinner as well. For about $17 you get a lot of food! Both orders came with fries and rice. Got back to work and noticed I did not get any napkins or sauces. Not a big deal, I have plenty of napkins. The steak sandwich was basically 5 slices of very dry pieces of steak on a large roll. No sauces or toppings (extra). I ate about half of the sandwich and tossed the rest out because it was pretty bad. The general flavor of the food here is a light layer of smokiness and salt. Maybe if I was starving I would eat it. The chicken and ribs also had the charbroiled flavor and salt. I could not discern and particular spice that may be part of Portuguese BBQ. As I stated earlier though the meats were mostly dry. Ribs were not fall off the bone and had a layer of char that was hard to eat. The dark meat chicken was good, but the white meat was mostly dry. You would need to eat it with some barbecue sauce and something to drink to get through the meal. The best part of the meal was the fries. It reminded me of the McDonald's soggy fries. The rice was ok. It was soft with mild flavor. It's amazing how much meat this place barbecues. They must get a lot of local customers otherwise they'll wasting a lot of money by making too much food. I can see locals on a limited budget coming here because of the quantity of food you can get for the money. I don't feel so bad leaving a one star review, as they must be doing pretty well customer wise. I must be the odd ball who doesn't appreciate the Portuguese barbecue from Luso's. read more

Quick, easy, different and the kids love it. Portuguese take out place by the hospital in Perth Amboy. Too small to really dine in, just seating for 4 at 2 small tables, but perfect, fast take out or delivery. Smell the wood fired grill from blocks away and know that you are in for a treat. If you are a meat eater or low carb person, the beef, chicken and pork are great, get the black beans on the side and a salad. For us carb lovers, the rice and fries are great, too. Nice change of pace from "same old Chinese and pizza" and you won't break the bank feeding a family of 4. Parking is a little difficult, on street meter or side street parking. Within the last 8-10 months the establishment seems to be under new management, the staff is very friendly but they raised prices over $2 on most entrees & here's the real problem, the food is trash! The ordering system could get a little tricky here for a first timer as they do platters. You can order a half or a full. With anything you get two sides. You can get a duplicate of sides. Since I am a picky shrimp lover, I grabbed the grilled shrimp with an extra side of french fries. The shrimp was grilled heavily, the charcoal added to the flavor.
