The restaurant looks like a dirty cafeteria. Walls are bare and drab. Corners are filthy. Floor doesn't look washed (interestingly the bathroom wasn't too awful). Eating here is depressing. The guy working the cash register, an old man whom I assume is the owner or at least a manager, is supremely unfriendly. Never smiles, never thanks, never makes you feel welcome. Gruff. Unpleasant. The smell around the restaurant is divine, but the food is overcooked. I didn't actively hate the food, but I'd never come here a second time. You DO get a lot of food for your money, but I'd rather not eat than eat here. Rice: B+ The one thing here that actually was pretty good (but if rice is the only good thing on the menu, you're in trouble!) Black Beans: B Not bad. Pork Ribs: C+ Horrendously overcooked. Dry to the point of being barely edible. Nice charring and chargrill flavors, but you have to choke it down, it's so dry. Sausage: B Like the pork ribs, it's overcooked and dry. The only thing that saves the sausage is that it's extremely fatty, so being overcooked can be overlooked. Still, I'd rather eat well-cooked sausage than overcooked sausage. I think management changed, because I didn't see the Portuguese guy that used to work there behind the counter. None the less, the food was still delicious! We ordered the chicken and rib combo with rice and french fries. The portions are large and you can easily feed 4 people with one combo. This place isn't somewhere I would recommend coming on a date though because it's set up as more of a take-out restaurant. The place can definitely use some updating. I've had a lot of Portuguese food. Not saying I'm an expert. I also understand we all have different taste however, I'm sorry to say I wasn't really feeling this place. I ordered trays for a party here since my bf loves Lusos. The rice had no flavor, the potatoes were so soggy no one touched them. Both the chicken and pork ribs were dry and the ribs were tough. I would most definitely recommend calling ahead to place your order as this restaurant is always busy and the wait is super long if you walk in. Also, your best bet is "take out." Right now I'm trying really really hard to think of some positives for this place. I'm no expert on Portuguese bbq, but when you overcook the meat, it's really hard to eat. I work a block from this place and for years wondered if the food was any good. I decided to ignore the low Yelp ratings and visit this place because I needed some quick grub. When I entered Luso's I saw a large family eating at the back and a bunch of local getting takeout and I was feeling good about my decision. In the back I can see a huge grate of chicken and ribs being cooked in an indoor grill. Smoke and aroma of cooked meats fill the restaurant. The interior of Luso's is nothing to write home about. It's old and dated and reminds you of a small cafeteria with a grill on the other side of a partition. I gave my order to an indifferent employee who spoke and understood English. I ordered a steak sandwich and Combo chicken & pork ribs (half order). I know I know that's a lot for lunch, but I figured I can eat some of it for dinner as well. For about $17 you get a lot of food! Both orders came with fries and rice. Got back to work and noticed I did not get any napkins or sauces. Not a big deal, I have plenty of napkins. The steak sandwich was basically 5 slices of very dry pieces of steak on a large roll. No sauces or toppings (extra). I ate about half of the sandwich and tossed the rest out because it was pretty bad. The general flavor of the food here is a light layer of smokiness and salt. Maybe if I was starving I would eat it. The chicken and ribs also had the charbroiled flavor and salt. I could not discern and particular spice that may be part of Portuguese BBQ. As I stated earlier though the meats were mostly dry. Ribs were not fall off the bone and had a layer of char that was hard to eat. The dark meat chicken was good, but the white meat was mostly dry. You would need to eat it with some barbecue sauce and something to drink to get through the meal. The best part of the meal was the fries. It reminded me of the McDonald's soggy fries. The rice was ok. It was soft with mild flavor. It's amazing how much meat this place barbecues. They must get a lot of local customers otherwise they'll wasting a lot of money by making too much food. I can see locals on a limited budget coming here because of the quantity of food you can get for the money. I don't feel so bad leaving a one star review, as they must be doing pretty well customer wise. I must be the odd ball who doesn't appreciate the Portuguese barbecue from Luso's. read more

Quick, easy, different and the kids love it. Portuguese take out place by the hospital in Perth Amboy. Too small to really dine in, just seating for 4 at 2 small tables, but perfect, fast take out or delivery. Smell the wood fired grill from blocks away and know that you are in for a treat. If you are a meat eater or low carb person, the beef, chicken and pork are great, get the black beans on the side and a salad. For us carb lovers, the rice and fries are great, too. Nice change of pace from "same old Chinese and pizza" and you won't break the bank feeding a family of 4. Parking is a little difficult, on street meter or side street parking. Within the last 8-10 months the establishment seems to be under new management, the staff is very friendly but they raised prices over $2 on most entrees & here's the real problem, the food is trash! The rib & chicken combo now consists of dry overcooked, tough to chew meat, often cold & absolutely not worth the price the rice remains good but the side of fries is often soggy & undercooked & cold! I thought at 1st Maybe it was just an "off" day & I decided to go back about a month later, big mistake the beef ribs were overcooked & tough, the ribs & chicken tasted horrible , dry, bland, overcooked & just impossible to chew , I would of recommended this spot to anyone in the past, Now I suggest you hit the low budget greasy chicken shack next door & be on your way with a $6 dinner box instead of eating at Luso's. The ordering system could get a little tricky here for a first timer as they do platters. You can order a half or a full. With anything you get two sides. You can get a duplicate of sides. Since I am a picky shrimp lover, I grabbed the grilled shrimp with an extra side of french fries. The shrimp was grilled heavily, the charcoal added to the flavor. To begin the prices on the menu are lower than actual price, some meals go over by as much as 4 dollars with tax, The service is atrocious, they treat you more like a burden or a pesky fly than a valued customer, rude and discourteous, the food is ok nothing you cant make at home really, veggie rice and fries take up 85% of the plate, the other 15% are taken up by 3-4 cut in half ribs to make it look like they gave you some meat when in reality they just cut 3 ribs in halves, the beef ribs are good but overpriced as well, your lucky if you get 3 whole ribs with the rice and fries for about 14$ and change, so in the end i wont see myself paying close to 15$ for 3$ of meat and 12$ worth of fries and rice in a small white tray, After the attitude and the poor service they added insult to injury by egregiously over charging for something you can get at any dive for about 8-10$ and with a smile, most places offer a free drink with a purchase of 20-25$ ,not these guys ,you can buy $200 worth of food and your lucky if you get napkins, forks or any freebies from these misers ...terrible! read more
