My wife, who is 8 months pregnant, and I stopped in for a meal and sat at a table where we have sat many times before, near the mirrors. The restaurant was nearly empty, with only one other couple dining at the time. Shortly after we sat down, I noticed one of the cooks open the front door of the restaurant, look directly at us, throw his hands up in frustration, and begin mumbling under his breath. He then started moving large boxes into the restaurant. Since I speak Spanish, I understood some of what he was saying. He complained that there were plenty of other seats available and questioned why we had chosen to sit where we were. As I looked more closely, I realized the mirrors beside our table were actually sliding doors to a storage area. It became clear that he was upset because my wife and I were seated in front of it. Had someone simply approached us and politely asked us to move, we would have gladly done so. Instead, the cook continued making comments under his breath and staring at us while moving boxes. Once he finished, he walked past our table, gave me a dirty look, and called me a vulgar name in Spanish ( cara de mierda). At that point, I stood up and asked him, in Spanish, to repeat what he had said. Rather than addressing the situation, he immediately walked into the kitchen and refused to come back out. At that point, I no longer felt comfortable having my food prepared by someone who had just openly insulted me and my pregnant wife. We decided to leave without ordering. This was especially disappointing because we have visited before and always enjoyed the restaurant. Unfortunately, the way this situation was handled was completely unprofessional and has likely cost them two longtime customers. read more

I visited in the early evening with my mom. It was our first time at this spot and our first time trying Peruvian food and it was so DELICIOUS! The food was seasoned so well (and not overly done for those salt sensitive people like my mom). The chicken was very moist yet the skin was wonderfully crispy. The fish tasted very fresh. I wish my meal was delicious but it was not. The food was underwhelming. I had the whole chicken combo with fries and salad and the chicken had no Peruvian flavor , in all honesty it tasted like chicken you get at a supermarket hot food section. It was bland. I was saddened because it was a good price. The fries were no good either. We also ordered a side of chicken fried rice and it was okay . The green sauce they use was the only yummy thing. Wanted to try a new place, came across Waka-Tay and it did not disappoint. I had the Lomo Saltado as its one of their popular dishes. I knew before I tried it that it was going to be good. It smelled amazing and tasted even better. The beef was extremely flavorful and of course paired well with the rice. I also had a side of sweet plantains that were pretty good. The serving sizes were pretty large as well. I will certainly be eating here more often. A must try. read more

Hey Hey Adventurers! This place has been in my town for ages now and I've finally stopped in to grab dinner. Very happy I did! I'm a huge fan of Peruvian food to start but there aren't close places that I know of aside from a spot in Elizabeth. I ordered the lomo saltado and the mixed ceviche, as well as a small house salad. The portions are large which was great since I had both a lunch and dinner the next day. The ceviche was really good and had plenty of mixed meats. I was surprised by the sweet potato they put in it, but it was explained it softens the tartness of the citrus. Either way it was delicious! The lomo was pretty authentic(I still haven't mastered the art of the perfect taste at home) and the meat was tender. I ordered extra of the spicy sauce because I LOVE that ish. I dumped that all over everything haha. Very happy I got to try this place out. The staff was wonderful, a little frenzied(maybe short staffed?) but the gentleman was still able to answer my questions. I wish they redid the inside to be a little more kitschy and not like a haphazardly thrown kitchen. If they did that I am pretty sure they'd have lines out the door. read more

We got the Lomo Saltado (a classic Peruvian dish), the Tallarin Saltado de Pollo (Peruvian-styled linguini with sauteed chicken), and the Camaron Al Ajillo (shrimp and potatoes in a creamy garlic sauce). To make a long story short; we ordered food which contained fries, we were given a almost empty ketchup bottle, after we used the last maybe 3 table spoons of ketchup, we asked for more ketchup. Was craving ceviche so we looked up nearby Peruvian places on Yelp. Waka-Tay was close to where we were so we decided to give it a try. It's small but we were seated right away. The staff was friendly and the food came out relatively quick. The food was absolutely delicious, the ceviche was great and the 1/2 chicken with salad and French fries were great. The salad dressing and the hot sauce paired it all perfectly. We also got a side of chaufa de vegetales and Maduros, both excellent. We had a lot left over so we took it home and brought it to work for lunch the next day and it was still delicious. We cannot wait to go back! The "Special Breakfast" had its Chicharrón with half bone and the other third all fat. I had asked the waitress to please try to minimize bone and fat, before I ordered. I made the waitress notice it, but no attempt to remedy, She said: "I told them but I don't cook the food". Then when the check came they had bumped the price of the soda by 50%. I've been looking for a good Peruvian place to eat like this in my neighborhood and now I finally have it. The roasted chicken and that green sauce is the best combo. The food was OK, it was not great but it was not horrible. I ordered the chicken with fries and it came with a salad. The chicken was a bit dry, the fries were about 50% ends, the small tiny pieces that you will usually find on the bottom of a bag of French fries. The service was peculiar, the person taking the order seemed like they were experienced, however I had to remind them twice that I wanted water. The fries were served with no ketchup, I had to ask for it. In all my life of eating out, of ordeing fries, burgers,etc. I was never served with an almost empty bottle of ketchup. The server provided me with the plastic bottle and then said " oh, its almost empty " I thought they would follow through with another bottle, since the ketchup I received barely was enough for maybe a handful of fries. After a few minutes, i asked for more ketchup. I was provided once again with an identical almost bare bone bottle of ketchup. This I find to be unprofessional and mindless behaviour. Its disrespectful. I have never been to a restaurant that does not provide ketchup while ordering fries. The person serving the food must probably work on weekends when they are not in school. Their demeanor was unpleasant. I will never eat here again, the staff needs experience dealing with people, they lack professionalism, courtesy and people skills. Just tried this place last night and was pleasantly surprised. Finally, something exciting in Woodbridge Township! The Tigre ceviche was uber tasty. when I asked the server to remove my dish, she told me to dip my rice from my main dish in it because that is how it is traditionally eaten. Great tip and I enjoyed it that much more. The waka-tay steak is seasoned perfectly and with so much flavor and served with potatoes in a cilantro sauce. My husband had the steak with an egg on top. It should have oozed when he cut into the egg, but it was slightly overdone. He still said it was tasty. Would give them 5 stars, but it was really busy with one server on the floor and she could not fill our small water glasses up in a timely fashion and we felt we had to sip slowly. Also, my husband's appetizer was really large and similar to his main dish. Would have loved the server to give us that info to possibly change his order. Super minor issues, but I loved the food and will go back or take-out. Portions are humongous and we enjoyed them the next day as well. They are open for breakfast on the weekends and they speak fluent Spanish as their language of choice. If they keep up what they are doing, this place will be packed every weekend. read more

Pretty delicious Peruvian chicken lunch I enjoyed at Waka-Tay. Walking in the decor is nice and inviting; catering to casual unpretentious dining. Started off with a tasty tamale appetizer. It was a densely rich cornmeal filled with dark meat chicken, a boiled egg, and olives. I appreciated the shredded red onion on top which had a nice tart acidity that cut the tamale's richness. For the entree, I shared with my sister, the whole roasted chicken meal that includes a salad and French fries. The large portion of roasted chicken was perfectly moist, with a slightly crisp roasted skin, and deliciously seasoned with spices that Peruvian chicken is famous for. The famous Peruvian Huacatay sauce was tasty too, but I think it was a bit tame for my taste, as I could have used more heat and richness. The large side House salad and French fries were both very good. House salad was very fresh with crisp lettuce, crunchy carrots, and fresh tomatoes. French fries were yummy and fried perfectly to my taste with a light golden crisp with no hints of greasy oily flavor that bad fries are notorious for. Added in a side order of Muduros that were was solid. My only slight negative for Waka-Tay was that I was originally going to order a Lomo Saltado, but when I asked the waitress if I could substitute the white rice with yellow rice (after asking the kitchen), the waitress told me the substitution could not be accommodated. I was more than willing to pay a slight upcharge for the yellow rice (as it's listed on the extras section of the menu), but I guess not? Overall delicious roast chicken served in large portions....sign me up for another visit! read more
