Was super excited to try the dumplings here and they definitely lived up to the hype. We started with a nice jasmine tea. It was a light pink color and a had a hint of sweetness. We then ordered the manga, kiss me, starburst, and snowwhite dumplings. The kiss me dumpling was filled with chicken, ginger, shallot, and soup. It was super flavorful and simple. The starburst dumpling was filled with chicken and Luyu homemade soup in a fruit infused flour dough. Honestly tasted pretty similar to the kiss me dumplings did not taste fruit. The Snow White dumplings were adorable as they looked like bunnies. They had shrimp and a delicous sticky exterior that was made of potato starch dough. Our last set of dumplings were the manga ones which were filled with different types of mushrooms. Wow, the presentation was incredible as they looked like hedgehogs, but more importantly they tasted amazing. The crunchy dough texture was a nice change from all the steamed dumplings. We also had the duck fried rice and the eggplant. The fries rice was delicious and the duck added so much flavor. The sticky eggplant was very unique. I had never had eggplant prepared that way. Finally went here for dinner the other night after almost a year of walking past and staring longingly. A friend and I ordered carrot dumplings, hedgehog dumplings, fried rice, spring rolls, chicken dumplings and a glass of wine each for about $80 total. We're not usually massive eaters but this is one of those places where you have to make an exception! The spring rolls are easily the best I've had in Sydney, and the dumplings arrived with three dipping sauces which were actually quite distinctive, unlike many restaurants which seem to offer multiple bowls of soy disguised as other things. The servers were some of the quickest, most efficient staff I've met in all of Australia, and seemed to have the speech about ingredients and spiciness down pat...even rote. However, the fried rice arrived well after everything else, and at 8:30 on a Friday night, I felt like we were being rushed out the door despite empty tables. Even so, the dumplings were delicious, and the speed with which everything else arrived was a good fit for how hungry we were! Given how much food we ordered, the price was really fair, too. It's tucked away, so my family friends and I took a while finding this wonderful little restaurant! The interior is dimly lit, and has soft music playing. It's an ideal date spot if you're going at a lonely hour, as Sunday night was. The staff was polite and friendly, and everything was transparent and friendly for viewing- the kitchens were quite a sight! Overall, their aesthetic was on point and their food was super good and well presented. Only thing to mention that might be a negative was the price. We ordered the hedgehog and rabbit dumplings as many of the other reviewers have. The drinks came very quickly, but they forgot the details-my friend asked for less ice but they forgot. They gave us an extra lemonade by mistake. The duck pancakes came the fastest, and tasted good! (Their cups are cute and so is their bartender ;)) read more

I have been wanting to try Luyu & Yum Yum for a quite a while now. The constant photo stream that would flood my Instagram account would send my mouth watering. So finally I took myself and it did not disappoint, the dumplings were incredible. My favourite had to have been the caviar. The side dish of chilli and sesame to accompany the dumplings worked magically. I wasn't a huge fan of the white rabbit dumplings, but they were still good. Next visit I would love to try the duck rice that seemed to be ordered by most of the restaurant. If your in the area I would most definitely go in for a dumpling treat! read more

Came here to have dinner with two girl friends. Will not return. After reading the more recent negative reviews I've come to the conclusion the manager gets a kick out of mistreating and belittling women. We walked in at 8:30pm for an 8:30pm booking. We stood there for 15 minutes before being acknowledged. We were all visibly annoyed at this point and the manager (Nick) did nothing to diffuse the situation. I told him I had a booking for 8:30pm. He ignored me and said it's a busy evening, he will see what he can do about finding us a table, but we would have to wait. I told him again I had a booking. He asked my name, then his reply "oh yes, you do have a booking. I didn't think you had one. You don't look like a Karen (+ surname)" I have olive skin and an Anglo sounding name because I am of mixed heritage, just like many Australians. Why does matter what my name is? Normally in a situation like this, it's a sign for me to leave and find a restaurant more worthy of my business. However we were hungry and just wanted to be seated. As we sat down, Nick made ANOTHER comment about my name and not believing I had a booking (seriously, do I need to provide photo ID and the booking confirmation email I received to prove this?!), then made an inappropriate comment about how he would like to make love to three women at once. Did I mention he also referred to my friend's chest and suggested he thought she had undergone cosmetic surgery? What a creep! There were no menus on the table. It took another 15 minutes to get menus (thanks to my friend who had to call out to a waitress who was running past), and we ordered three drinks and some dumplings to start with whilst we intended to browse the menu more. At this point we had already waited 30 minutes. 10 minutes later, two drinks arrive. We kept waiting for the third drink (which was mine). Waited another 15+ minutes for my drink to arrive. My friend had to call out to another waitress walking past and asked to speak to the manager. Nick made his way to the table. My friend asked "how long does it take to pour a drink into a glass? We have been waiting forever!" (close to one hour by this point! No drink, no food.) Nick scolded us like school children. Told my friend to shut up, informed us two complaints had been made about our table because we were too loud (yeah, we have to yell out to the poor waiters who are exhausted and run off their feet so we can get served. I highly doubt two people complained about that. In fact, it's likely they were frustrated with the lack of service too). Nick also informed us my drink was not arriving because he had told the bar and the kitchen "no more drinks, no food" because he "didn't think we were serious." We were kept waiting in this restaurant for ONE HOUR. Is that in itself not indicative that we were "serious" and wanted some food? We actually think he was lying at this point, because if we were as badly behaved as he insists we were, then we would have been shown the door a long time before this. Now after he said this, he again brought up my name and said I didn't look like a Karen. Then Nick told us to drink the two wines we have been given, he won't charge us for them, and then we should leave the restaurant. So that's it. Three ladies kicked out of a restaurant for asking for some service! If I could rate the restaurant 0, I would. My advice to anyone considering coming to Luyu and Yum Yum is DON'T DO IT! Do what we ended up doing- walk 300 metres down the street to the popular Thai restaurant instead. Been there a few times and the food and service is consistently good. My advice to Nick is: 1. Learn to treat diners with respect 2. Treat women with respect 3. Treat your staff with respect (I seriously pity them, the restaurant is visibly understaffed and the waiters are stressed). read more

Lulu and yum yum has to be one of the cutest names for a restaurant going around. From where it is located on King Street, you wouldn't know it was there. Up a flight of stairs and not well signposted - but my Instagram feed is what got me there. I'd been seeing pictures of cute hedgehog dumplings that I really wanted so went to find this place. Make sure you do too! It is a huge space upstairs, suitable for a date, family catch up or even a party (which there was one in the back room when I was there). Waitstaff were immediately welcoming and allocated us a seat, took our drink order and promptly brought the drinks out. Lots of beers, wines and cocktails on offer. The menu is super interesting, a bit pricy to be a regular but great for a special occasion. The food was amazing though, so I guess it's worth it. The first dish we ordered was small lightly fried pieces or tofu, on a crispy noodle, accompanied by a few sauces including vinegar and their home Made soy. We then got the "starburst dumpling" which was chicken and homemade soup inside a fruit infused flour dough and steamed. Not only beautiful, but absolutely divine taste. We then got the menu option that brought me to this place; the hedgehog dumplings. I love a gimmick. These are dumplings filled with King oyster mushroom, funghi, Chinese mushroom, carrot and coriander in flour dough, baked, and designed to look exactly like a hedgehog. We ended with the truffle dumpling skewer which was 4 huge dumplings, 2 per skewer filled With chicken, prawn, ginger, shallot and topped with truffle. They were pan seared and incredibly delicious. Awesome. Caviar dumplings, scallop dumplings, funghi dumplings, pot stickers. You can also get a varied assortment to try different options. They also sell rice, Spring rolls, duck pancakes. Came here for work dinner last week and found that the food tastes as nice as it looks, although it's no where near filling, serving sizes are small and overpriced. Would recommend if you are not a big eater. There cocktails were good tho, would rate the watermelon one read more

Interesting luxury dumpling concept. I love that they have an interesting tea choices and presentation was really nice. Prices are running on the expensive end of the scale which is surprising considering they are based in Newtown. We ordered the fried rice and prawn chive dumplings. THe fried rice came with a lot of vegetables and it tasted quite light. It's also cooked using mustard seeds that's quite unusual for Chinese food, but worked really well in this dish. The prawn chives dumplings were delicious and the dumpling skins were translucent and beautiful. I was a little confused that there were no pork on the menu. I'd love to come back, but with $12-15 per 4 dumplings price point I think I might head to my favourite dim sum places instead. read more

Went here on the weekend for a birthday lunch, there were 15 of us so we went for the Mr Luyu banquet menu and it was great. The dumplings were very fresh and tasty and were perfectly shaped. The mains were also delicious and there was plenty of food for everyone. I find Chinese food can sometimes be oily and heavy but all the food here seemed fresh and light. I've dined here three times and each time we've had one of the banquets which has been a great way to sample loads from the menu. Highlights: definitely the Kiss Me Dumplings and the Eggplant, delicious! The staff are great, very efficient and friendly. I came here late on a Friday lunchtime when the restaurant was near empty, with a dumpling craving like you wouldn't believe. I ordered the 7 flavour tofu and the caviar dumplings, with the former being good and the latter divine. Taste-wise the tofu was great - I was just a bit disappointed that they chose to cook it in small cubes so you didn't get that gorgeous billowy marshmallowy effect that you get when larger cubes are deep fried. The dumplings were really really good, the evidence being that I keep obsessing about them a week later and planning a return trip for more! The service was very slick if a little slow on taking orders but really no complaints. It's also big and gorgeously decorated, so the sort of place where you can have a special night out with any size group. It is quite a bit more expensive than the usual dumpling place so if price is an issue, you might want to consider that. read more

I need to start with the fact that the food at Luyu Yum Yum is delicious. Which just adds insult to the injury that is the floor service. On reasonably quiet a weeknight our group of six waited more than half an hour for each round of drinks which came out two at time for a table of six, and longer again to order any food. I was served a standard glass of Australian Sake, not hot or cold but at room temperature then charged $75 for the privilege. The entire wait staff, including management, needs to be given some basic training in food and beverage service, if they have any hope of matching the hard working chefs who are producing amazing quality food. read more
