This place is a joke I came in for an appointment the ARNP had a meeting why was I not informed about this I called at 11:20 am told me I was in the parking garage I come in the lady did all my vitals then comes back to tell me the ARNP has a meeting. Dr Shaw preformed lower back surgery on my wife a couple of years ago with no relief from the pain. After many more visits over a couple of years with Dr Shaw and more MRIs he told my wife that she had a chronically damaged nerve. She sought a 2nd opinion with a different doctor and hospital. The 2nd opinion didn't understand how Dr Shaw missed the fact that the MRI showed a clearly pinched nerve. After surgery with the 2nd opinion my wife is recovering pain free. Incompetent is a strong word, but he can't read an MRI. Also, the office staff at Lyerly Neurosurgery fail to return your calls and have an uncaring attitude. read more

Lyerly is outstanding., and so I'm surprised about the bad reviews. If you check out other review pages, they have a 5/5,out of hundreds of reviews. They deserve a 5.0 based on our experience at least. The basis for my opinion is set forth below. My spouse injured his back so badly he was in a wheelchair. The night before the surgery he could barely transfer from his chair to bed and was in horrible pain despite strong opioid pain medication. Dr. Shaw operated and he woke to no pain, and was able to easily transfer to his wheelchair to come home just a few hours after surgery! Dr. Shaw is not only the ultimate professional, but has an excellent bedside manner during surgery. While at the office he explained things very clearly he was clinical. But before surgery he exuded warmth and caring that was such a comfort. And when he met with me while Charlie was in recovery to explain how the procedure went, I was I rushed and all my questions addressed. He is truly an A++ surgeon. Within a week we put the wheelchair into the garage and he was walking with the assistance of a walker for stability as he rebuilt his leg muscles. Within two weeks he could walk without the walker. Best of all the pain did not return. Dr.Shaw and Lyerly gave us our life back. Special shout out to Cheryl and Heather who are amazing - and part of the team who put Charlie back together again!! Charlie's neurologist Dr Snyder at Baptist recommended Lyerly/Dr Shaw and his office placed the order/reached out for us. We were called promptly, and seen within a week. Surgery was promptly scheduled for less than a week later and we had his follow-up scheduled before we left the Hospital. We cannot recommend Dr. Shaw, his group and this practice more positively. If I could I'd give them a hundred stars!!! read more

When we go to a physician we put our trust in this person because they went to college, earned a degree, they had countless hours of experience in their profession, and everyone speaks so highly and says that they are the best. However, those words, degrees, and hours don't mean anything when you don't even have enough respect for your patient to tell the truth. We've been waiting since last Thursday for the results of Elton's CT scan. We got the X-ray results from a letter. That's right a letter. The doctor promised Elton to call him the day he had the scans done and that was supposed to be the reason he sent him to MD Anderson, so that he could get the results faster. Elton has called them every single day, with the same response, Dr. Monterio is waiting on your CT results, as soon as they come in he will call you right away. Well today is Thursday, a week later, still no word, Elton has been up since 2 am with shooting nerve pain running down through his butt, leg, and knee. I check the mail this morning and there is a letter with the results of the CT scan. Which means they have had them! The results state that the hardware is in place, yet it doesn't address anything else. Just because the hardware is in place doesn't mean something else isn't wrong. He is in so much pain, I know something is wrong. On the bottom of the report, the doctor starts the letter by "I hope your doing well." If he was doing well, we wouldn't be doing this would we? Ten months post up from a surgery that you are promised a 98% success rate that your nerve pain will be gone. Now the pain is stronger and longer, and he can't feel the front of his leg, his knee feels as if an ice pick is stabbing into constantly, his toes are numb many days, and his leg is weak. But as a medical professional who performed this surgery on him and caused more of this pain and you don't even have the common decency to call and explain what you've done to him, you just send this letter. That is just uncalled for and a disgrace. This is not the only problem we have faced. Dr. Monterio has never seen Elton again since the surgery. He has only see his PA, Mike Trinidad. Every single time, the PA wanted him to have an MRI which he cannot have due to his VNS for his seizures. It was implanted by Dr. Sauvageau who works in the same office with them, who coordinated with them before the surgery and had to convince Dr. Monterio that Elton couldn't do both surgeries at the same time after Dr. Monterio called my husband foolish for not staying in the hospital and doing both surgeries. We now need to look for a second opinion, so we can begin to find some options to get Elton some relief. Because apparently here patients aren't their top priority. read more

was referred to Dr Monterio by the ED of his affiliate hospital. His scheduler called me and said I don't need immediate surgery and that he has refused to see me. He wouldn't see me? Like ever? She didn't say that surgery wasn't necessary but that wasn't required immediately. I've been bedridden for over a month. Since then I have made an appointment with another Dr there. Hopefully he'll be kind enough to at least review my tests and advise me on what can be done. read more

This review is specifically about Dr JAVIER GARCIA-BENGOCHIA. He reviewed my MRI in August and determined surgery was needed on my neck and scheduled it for 2 weeks later. Then they called to cancel leaving me 2 rude messages in no uncertain terms to not show up. It was CANCELLED. They said I needed to get consent from my other doctor. (Who gave me his name in the first place!) He contacted them the same day to give the go ahead. This was on Thursday or Friday. I did not get the message till the next day and was scheduled on Monday or Tuesday. I called them the day before the surgery to ask if they received the letter. They said they had. And would call me to re-schedule it. They kept giving me the run around and excuses why it was still being reviewed, when the first time, they scheduled it during the appointment. They could not be bothered to return my call. And the person who left me the voicemails, was mysteriously no longer working there anymore. The doctor was arrogant, rude and condescending. He spent more time talking to someone else on his cellphone. I doubt I even got 8 minutes. My primary care doctor warned me about him and he thinks he is God. But I was still willing to overlook it if he could do the surgery. Glad I didn't. read more

It's a big NO for me! I knew someone who went to this office and had great success so I feel terrible for telling my husband to go here now. My husband had a discetomy 10/6/2020 which went fine, was happy with the Dr Wallace at THAT time.. BUT then was still experiencing pain so another MRI was ordered. So Boom, got the MRI 11/09/2020 and STILL have not received results from the doctor. Every time you call they act like it's your first time calling and you end up back at square one. They constantly say "ok i''ll send another message and rush you off the phone." Or they tell you they sent a letter in the mail, which never happened when you speak to the next staff member. Just completely ridiculous and incompetent. It's been almost FOUR WEEKS since the MRI for crying out loud. We are not being unreasonable! I work in the medical field myself and know how this works. We just ended up asking the radiologist to send us a copy of the reading which basically shows the same as the original one he had BEFORE surgery. Apparently no one is concerned because they are not the one dealing with the pain. They definitely were in a rush to send you that $30,000 bill though! read more

Dr. Garcia-Bengochea AND his staff were always extremely professional and considerate. My care, from start to finish was flawless and my recovery from the cervical fusion was MUCH quicker and less painful than I had expected. I've been totally pain free for approximately 9 years now and the scar from the surgery was invisible in less than a year or two. I've waited 10 months to write a review. I've kept hoping things would get better, but Lyerly failed miserably. I should have trusted my gut feeling when I had to call 5 times to finally get an appointment. When I was finally able to get in (35 days later), I met the emotionless Dr Monterio. Didn't jive from jump street, but his experience listed made me question my own feelings. I agreed to a simple L5-S1 fusion, where I was told it would be easy, and I'd be back to work in 6-8 weeks. After a 10 hour surgery, he decided to take me off the pain meds 12 hours after surgery. When the hematoma blew up in my spine, he took over 45 minutes to get medication to release the pain. Follow up is a joke, no plan to get better from them. No physical therapy, no pain relief. I've had to go back to pain management, where I was before this hack destroyed my life. I'm in worse pain now than I was before I ever walked through their door. I only wish someone had written a review and told me to stay away from them. I've since met 3 other patients that Montero has ruined, and all locals. I'm sure there's more, just haven't met then yet. If you have the misfortune to ever walk through those doors, run away from Montero. read more

Last month I had a consultation with Dr. Javier Garcia-Bengochea, MD. Among many things discussed for my cervical spinal surgery was the second opinion from a different modality specialist. I got the direct impression that the doctor, who could be one of the best in the state, was not happy with my prodding, and my right to seek a different opinion. I even explained that the other specialist I was seeking was to compliment Dr Garcia's surgery plan. So he gave me a name and told me to wait and not cold call the other doctor but to let his staff make the arrangements for a consultation. More than a week goes by and nothing. I call and call and am told something totally different. I then call that specialist and find out he doesn't even do spine, only hip and knees. So I call back Lyerly and ask the staff for another referral and was told that the doctor, in trying to honor his direction, would provide that referral. Well after more than 3 weeks, its been smoke and mirrors. In fact my number is blocked. How do you like that. The people you are trying to work with are so arrogant they don't even want to work with you, THE CUSTOMER. Customer service is deplorable, if you can get someone to answer the phone!! These people were out of touch when they discovered I wasn't just going to drop a 100K just for the hell of it. read more

A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. It's the whole team that ultimately makes or breaks the overall patient experience. Putting aside the fact that while I was in pretty bad shape before having multiple surgeries, my life now is in shambles. It's impossible to get a phone call returned (more often than not, you'll get a 'mailbox full' message. Try to leave a message with a live person won't work either- you will not get a call back. Try to Email, either direct or through their portal will get you zero response - a fact admitted to me by my Dr.'s assistant. "I sent you that info via email/patient portal" - "Oh that explains it, call instead, I don't get to my emails very often". I had limited mobility with significant pain prior to seeing these people - now, after 2 surgeries, I can barely function and I'm living on heavy duty pain meds and have been completely ignored - they only like patients with good outcomes. They have ruined my life. Do not, repeat, do not go here. All the fancy offices and state of the art equipment doesn't mean a thing if the physicans team treats you like garbage and goes out of their way to avoid having to deal with you. And if you think escalating this to the hospital or practice staff will help, think again. It won't. I finally found a competent attorney to seek redress. Stay away. read more
