It's hard to find words to express our gratitude. The amount of care and the intentionality that each one showed us was amazing. Beyond five stars. We feel like we gained a new family! Midwives & doulas are one of a kind. These ladies are genuine in their care, noticing the details, and quick to respond. They stayed with us through each wave of contraction. They catered to any need whether it was a cold, wet rag, water, or check heartbeat. They knew the best positions to move into for each stage of labor. They encouraged and coached us in each moment. They surrounded me in protective care and cheered me on as I pushed. They coached Ed in catching Bo. They tended to every need. They cleaned up any mess... Held me. Comforted me. Reassured me. Gave us sound wisdom during the long hours. Even found moments to laugh. Best and most of all, they believed in us! They trusted in the process. They believed in us as a family, and we had the honor of delivering at the birth center. I'll always cherish this memory. @statesvilledoulaandlactation #babypeel #doula #midwife #nurse #naturalbirth #birthcenter

She never made me feel rushed, never made me feel like I had a dumb question and answered any questions I could have possibly had at every appointment. This was so assuring as a first time mom. I would recommend her to anyone and will absolutely go back and see her for my next pregnancy and also GYN needs. The nurses and ultra sound techs were also super nice!!! They have a large waiting room and only once during my pregnancy did I have to wait longer than 10-20 minutes to be called back. They do have a strict late policy and the one time I was late, the receptionist was a bit sassy, so make sure you are on time! A couple times she wasn't in the office so I had to see other providers. The mid wives I saw were all fabulous! I also saw Dr. Dehoff who I did not care for. It seemed like he was 'mansplaining' and I felt extremely rushed and like my questions weren't welcome. He said "do you have any questions as he opened the door to leave". I would not see him again but everyone else was amazing and I received the best care!!! When in the hospital delivering my daughter, the Dr's and mid wives from this practice were all really nice and listened to me/my concerns. Dr. Hyatt (only delivers babies, doesn't see office patients) was also very kind and great at his job. We love Dr. Wilson and Providence OBGYN!

However, because medical board complaints are not public, and because it is rare for doctors to face tangible consequences from such complaints, I view it as my duty to share this and inform Charlotte area women. My silence may protect me from harassment and retaliation, but it also protects doctors who are already protected by the institutions they work for. This only results in more women being hurt. So I am sharing this despite very being so frightened of what may come of it. On November 29, 2023, while sitting on my couch at home I started hemorrhaging bleeding through my pants on to my couch, scaring myself, my husband, and my boys. I was bleeding so much, I wouldn't have been allowed on a plane. I went to the Novant ER thinking I'd be treated promptly. I had an IUD and learned that I was pregnant with a blighted ovum (no fetal heartbeat, no baby, just an empty gestational sac). The on-call OBGYN was DeHoff. The next 15 hours were the worst of my life. It's hard for me to recount the events because one of the symptoms of the PTSD caused by those events is to feel like you're reliving them, so I am enclosing pictures of the complaint I filed against DeHoff with the NC Medical Board. You can see them in the practice pictures. Since I've started sharing this story, I've learned that a woman who I know from my sons' former preschool also filed a complaint against DeHoff with Novant and Providence OBGYN in September 2023, two months before I encountered him. This woman also informed her OBGYN Dr. Nora Arronte of her concerns regarding DeHoff and subsequently filed a complaint against DeHoff with the NC Medical Board, which is currently pending (like my complaint). Thus, Novant and Providence OBGYN (and at least one of Providence OBGYN's other physicians, Dr. Arronte) appear to have prior knowledge of this doctor's track record of harming women. My understanding is that since I submitted my complaint, De Hoff is no longer doing OB work, and is only doing GYN work. I do not know if this is as a result of the complaint, whether De Hoff has lost his hospital admission privileges or if this is the natural career progression of an aging doctor with multiple malpractice complaints pending before his licensing board. I am frightened to share this but view it as my civic duty to inform this community of someone I consider a public danger to women who remains employed by a "reputable" practice despite their apparent knowledge of his actions.

I was always interested in having a homebirth since having my own bad experiences in hospitals. After seeing my mom friends have bad birth experiences in hospitals that interest quickly formed determination, I just didn't know how to go about it. Thankfully after posting on a local facebook group I was recommended Karen by name not just by one person but several people. I Always pictured myself finding someone Who was holistically minded whom I could learn from and very quickly when first speaking with her I realized Karen was exactly that. I'm so thankful we picked Karen for our home birth because my labor was not easy it was 30 hours long and I was not exactly the zen primal birther I had hoped to be I was throwing up crying and down right exhausted for the latter half of my birth and thinking omg how am I going to get this baby out who do I think I am?? But Karen was on top of it she coached me through the hardest parts and gave me and my perineum the support we desperately needed! Because of her I had an incredible birth that has empowered me so much through this postpartum period. I don't think I would've been able to labor and birth at home without her knowledge and quick action.

I do understand these kinds of circumstances however, no one ever tried to call or reach out to me before I arrived at the appointment. I had an option to do my screening with the NP Leah Alfino and reschedule with Dr. Adams or reschedule my surgery consult and do the screening then. I opted to do the screening first. I made it clear to the front desk that it was only a screening appt. and I would reschedule for another appointment. I was billed for a moderate visit so it was not covered as a screening. When I called the office they told me I should have stopped any questioning of anything else and said, " I am only here for my screening!". This sounds very rude to me! I was baited into a question/ answer session to be able to say she talked to me about other issues! How would a patient know to stop the questioning to stop billing? They checked directly with the NP and she stood firm on her billing! I am an RN an I have never heard of such a thing! They would not adjust the code so I paid the bill, notified Medicare and I will NEVER EVER return!! Dr. Adams just lost not only a patient but a surgical patient, as well! THIS IS A WARNING FOR ALL OF YOU LADIES WITH CHILD ! My wife…read moreand daughters have been part of this group for years and Kathy Shields has been our angel for all of that time. We love and care for her greatly. The practice has been fantastic as well. This year, our daughter is with twins and at approx 32 weeks , she was in distress. She called for some direction and a nurse2 named " Paisley " was not only somewhat rude to a pregnant woman in distress but appeared to be new or lacking knowledge. She directed her to Primary care. When she arrived at the primary care in Denver NC, they were so very kind but perplexed as to why she was sent there. They examined her and recommended to check with the OBGYN. Paisley again said no, so my daughter called CMC and they got her back right away. They did their thing in checking her out and found one of the children's heart rate would dip and come back. This happened several times. The doctor, whoever she is, should get an award, but I am sure, God will reward her, for she said for those babies to come out right away. It is an answer to our prayers for comfort and relief for our daughter and child because the placenta detached from the mother (happens in only 1% of people). Surely, the child would have not made it. Happy we went to CMC yet we are so sad and somewhat let down, that someone like Paisley is giving instructions to folks who are in jeopardy. Wake up Paisley. Seek wisdom, knowledge, ask for a mentor and maybe some phone side manner. We do not hate you, but we hope you get what you need to help expecting mothers and do not waste time because there may not be enough time, as it almost was here. PS, We know, not thought , that this should be reviewed by the people who look into these neglects of duty and of course, like the rest of the world, they ok'd how Paisley handled this and we know this to be FALSE. Ephesians 6:12 "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

My first appointment last year was exactly what I expected / wanted; however, this year, I guess due to combining with another practice, the staffing is lower and they are not able to provide the same level of service. I arrived 10 minutes late to my appointment (traffic and life). I called on the way to let them know that I would be late, but was on my way. I was told that there was a 15 minute window, so I should be fine. I interpreted this to mean if I got there within 15 minutes of my start time, I would be fine. I arrived 10 minutes late, and waited to check in. The receptionist was checking out someone and had a very lengthy conversation. I asked the other lady behind the desk was that the only place for me to check in. She confirmed that no one else could help me. Once it was finally my turn, I was told that I was 15 minutes late and could no longer check in. I told her that I had arrived 5 minutes earlier, had been waiting and was told via phone that I could be seen as long as I got there within 15 minutes. I was asked who I had spoken to, I did not get the persons name, but was consistently asked for that name as if: #1 I was not telling the truth, or #2 knowing that name would magically get me in for my appointment. The receptionist tried to go back and speak to the midwife on call and said that it was actually only going to be a 15 minute appointment, she was already running behind and would not be able to see me today. I could understand this policy if it had been explained to be before (I've been a Novant patient for 3 years, never heard this before) and if I had never had to wait to see a doctor / midwife before. Never in my time going to the doctor have I been seen exactly at the time of the appointment or not been asked to wait 10, 15 or even 20+ minutes to be seen. Also, having driven from Charlotte specifically for midwifery care, I did have an anticipation of an appointment longer than 15 minutes (my appointment last year was 30-45 mins.). The receptionist then asked if I could wait around, get lunch and be seen at 2pm. While I appreciate her attempts to help me, that infuriated me more because there was the assumption that I could just hang around until the doctor was ready. No, I cannot wait that long, I had to go back to work. Again, I acknowledge that I was 10 mins late; however, I do not feel that staffing structure and procedures are adequate to meet the needs of the patients. I let the receptionist know that I was changing caregivers, because I did not appreciate how this situation was handled...had to overcome several obstacles to get there and expected better service care from Novant and from a practice centered around midwives...or just one midwife...which is all that is left.
