A huge red oak had died in my yard and was in danger of losing some of its limbs and doing damage to my home or the neighbors. After calling a couple of tree services that didn't follow through with their promise to give me an estimate, Mitchell answered my call and showed up at my house at the time promised. We agreed on a price to take the tree down, which was very reasonable. He did the leg work of getting a city permit to remove the tree and did the work as promised. He even removed a smaller tree that had also died on my property for no additional cost. He also gave me tips and suggestions on how to care for my other trees. Mitchell is awesome. He'd done some pruning and tree removal for me a couple years ago. Recently had a large limb from a larger pecan tree fall and pin our truck. Mitchell and Patrick showed up 25 minutes after I called him and went right to work clearing brush and supporting the limb so we could safely extract the truck. I reduced my rating from five stars to one due to Mitchell's increasingly inappropriate and erratic behavior. Instead of acknowledging that what I wrote is true and apologizing, he posted an incoherent reply, then replaced it with one full of falsehoods. He even sent me some texts threatening to put a lien on my house unless I took down my review by "noon". Since I had already paid him to "walk away", that would be a fraudulent lien. All this in response to what I thought was a relatively kind review. Since he has replied dishonestly, I'll have to give more details. I had mentioned that Stephanie B's April 8, 2018 one-star review fit with my own experience. Here's an example: he sent me some bizarre texts, one of which claimed that Stephanie is his ex trying to ruin his company. I share her sense that Mitchell is a "loose cannon". He took it upon himself to talk to my neighbor without giving me a chance to talk first. I've never had a negative encounter with the man, but Mitchell says his went badly. That's part of why I don't want Mitchell EVEN DOING WORK FOR FREE (something he offered to do in exchange for me taking down my review). I also wonder if he is soliciting or writing some of his own reviews. Several look very suspicious to me. For example, on June 9th, the same day that he replied to my review, a five star review from "Heather D" was posted. An August 1, 2017 review suggested that he is close with someone named Heather. Even if Mitchell were appropriate and honest, I've seen him become increasingly unreliable. A month ago he asked for a partial payment in advance, explaining that he needed to come back the next day with hired help. In fact, he came back four weeks later, without bringing any help. When I asked him if he had done work for any other customers during the month that he was absent, he refused to answer. As I recall, most of the time he didn't show up when he said he would, and didn't call to tell me. Sometimes he just showed up and did work without an appointment -- a huge privacy concern, since he climbs around in trees outside my window. He tells me that he spent four days here and did most of the work he promised to do, but I only see a small part of it completed -- not more than a few hours of work. If he was really here for four days, I have no idea how he spent that time. He must be extremely slow. All I see is cigarette butts on my driveway. He raised the price of the job after he started, saying he had underestimated how much needed to be done. While my first experience with him was good, in recent years he has increasingly delivered *less* than promised. For example, around May 2017 he agreed to cut limbs to a distance from the house where I wouldn't have to call him back for a couple of years. (Other arborists have told me they shouldn't have to come back more than every 2 or 3 years.) When Mitchell told me he was done, I thought he hadn't cut enough. He assured me he would prune again for free if there is too much growth in the next 18 months. But 13 months later, he charged me. Upshot: I finally paid Mitchell to "just walk away". He took the money, but again didn't keep his word. He trespassed while I was out the next day, climbing outside my windows to retrieve a cheap strap that he had previously told me he would leave on my tree for strength. He describes that as having to retrieve his "tools". Note that my review, which had upset him, had complained about his coming onto my property without an appointment. He just doesn't respect privacy. I've since discovered that he put under my house a lot of the brush he cut. I guess he respects the privacy of brush. :) read more

I definitely would not get involved with this guy. In am SHOCKED by all the good reviews in comparison with my experience with this arborist. Things with Mitchell generally started out fine when I hired him, but after a few bizarre text messages and a few strange in-person encounters, my builder and I started getting the feeling this guy was a loose cannon. By the end of it all, we are now certain this arborist is a lunatic. Mitchell started working for me with a simple agreement to remove some trees, trim down some landscaping and to remove brush as needed. The first red flag was when he demanded to be paid 100% before the job was complete. Aside from our original agreement, he wiggled his way into some other work at the house I was renovating (removing trash and pulling out an existing fence). There was a day he was to work and never showed up to the job at all. On a different day, he was to come into work and then said his truck was broken down. When he did work, he often talked to himself, mumbling. The final dealbreaker was when he wouldn't stop sending incoherent rambling text messages, calling my builder and I as early as 6:00am and ending as late as 10:00 pm, all while using quite vulgar language. At one point he demanded to be paid 4 times in a week's time period. He never fulfilled the work from our original agreement. In total, he worked for us only 2 weeks. Long story short, my builder and I couldn't wait to get rid of this guy. I only paid him the money he said he was owed because I wanted him to walk away from the job entirely. read more

I have known Mitchel for a number of years and I'd hired him from time to time. Most recently after the bed col storm, I hired him again. Since I know him I had no problem giving him an advance; that was my big mistake. I've listened to a ton of excuses why he hasn't finished the job he started. I ended up hiring someone else. Mitchell has pruned our trees for a couple of years now. The other day our neighbor's tree was about to fall onto our house, so I called him on a Sunday with the emergency. He responded immediately and was out at the property within 30 mins to give an estimate and start work. He's a very thorough, professional and cool guy. Highly recommend him! read more

About 1.5 years ago, Mitchell did work on three of my trees here in Georgetown. One was in poor health, and the others needed pruning. He worked quickly and got a lot done in two afternoons. About six months after he left, the trees (and the lawn) started looking better than they ever had before. He did a great job and was very affordable. Highly recommend. read more

Mitchell is terrific. My trees were FULL of mistletoe. Being new to the area I thought it was part of the trees. Not so. He explained how the mistletoe impedes tree growth. He cleared a wooded 1/3 acre in a day and wow, do they look great now! For the amount of work done and the danger involved, there were also two people, I felt his price fair. He also gave me info on the various trees on my lot (I had no idea what kind they were), gave me info on what to consider for a hedge and a great nursery. He is very personable and I will have him back when the time comes. As the first reviewer said, he has other reviews that fall under Yelp's "not recommended" reviews. I'm guessing that Yelp wants to get paid from the people being reviewed. It says there are 11 reviews "not recommended." Damned if I could find more than 2. Yelp wants us to trust them in that owners can't remove their bad reviews, but I no longer trust Yelp as to give me the real skinny on everyone. Mitchell is goooood. read more

I bid my project out to Mitchell and three others. After talking to him, I knew that no matter what his bid was I was going to use him. Ironically, he came in as my low bid. I can't recommend Mitchell enough. He is incredibly knowledgeable and takes great care to ensure your trees are cut to promote growth and good health. He and Heather are just wonderful people. Really kind, considerate and hard working. They were at my house on the two hottest days of the year so far and went above and beyond the call of duty, all doing it with a smile. Honest, hard working, polite, fair people that do extraordinary work. Mitchell Brown came out to take care of two fairly young live oak trees. They are not huge, but they needed some care to grow properly. I live very close to Austin and the "name brand" tree companies were going to charge a small fortune even for their minimum charge. I found Mitchell and after talking to him decided to give his firm a try. I am glad I did. He was responsive to email and calls, came on time, finished the job promptly, spent half an hour sharing with me how to care for the trees and which organic products I should use to feed them.
