I thought this place was just OK. I had the shrimp tacos which tasted pretty good but were small. I honestly could make these at home with very similar taste and way less cost. For $12 I think the entree should accompany sides such as rice and beans or at least give your tables fresh chips and salsa. My boyfriend has the filet mignon tacos on special and neither of us likes them. The steak was tough, there was way too much chipotle sauce on top, and the fried green onion has horrible texture and seemed as if they legit took a green onion and deep fried it plain. It was difficult to eat on the taco. The chips and salsa trip was ok. Again for $7, the three dips were extremely small. Maduros/fried plantain appetizer was just ok as well - greasy. I did love the blueberry Smoothie and horchata. I also loved the variety of salsas they brought to try. They were all delicious and I did feel that was one thing that set this place apart from others. I don't think I will be back anytime soon. For the cost and size of portions I was disappointed. I'm mainly giving this a 5 star review because of the awesome service we got (maybe the gentleman who waited on us was the owner). I loved how all the details about our dining experience were uniquely presented. From the Moscow mule inspired water cups, to the wooden planks for the tacos, I really enjoyed the decor and feel of this place. I ordered the braised short rib tacos, while my friends ordered the duck tacos, shrimp tacos, and goat platter (special of the day). We also ordered a chicken empanada, zucchini blossom soup, arepa, elite, and the cinqo leches cake. We all shared our food, and my favorite taco was definitely the shrimp one. The duck one was crunchy, like it was just deep fried skin almost, but didn't really have that duck flavor I was anticipating. I also really liked the chicken empanadas, which has a great flavor and crunch to it. The sauce on top topped it off. My first time trying elote and it is something that I'm definitely going to eat again. We also got to try three flavors of sorbet, compliments of the house. The appetizers were great, I really enjoyed the multiple dishes that we tried. The chips were salted to perfection and fresh dips were super tasty! My main dish the M cantina burger was sadly a epic fail, the chicken didn't have any flavor and if it did it was masked by this heavy cheese that shouldn't have been added in the first place. I am deadly allergic to avocados, I was going to try a taco but they told me that the chef was unable to remove guacamole from any of the taco dishes, which I thought was very odd. Sadly I won't be visiting this place any time soon, I have it a 3 only Bc the place is super environmentally friendly and the store has a great ambience. Ps. From the myriad of taco choices to the corn appetizer, M Cantina has a wide variety of delicious food. I've tried both the Duck Carnitas and the Chicken Tinga both of which were amazing. Plus I enjoyed the decor and overall feel of the restaurant. The only thing I would say is that there isn't a whole lot of space so I would try to beat the rush. I'd like to start off by thanking the owner for being so hospitable towards my sister and I considering we went an hour before close. He was so nice and so open to informing us on the many delicious things offered on the menu. He also allowed us to sample 2 items. My sister ordered the the chicken tinga (see pics). It consisted of shredded chicken on corn tortillas with shredded romaine lettuce, corn, and sauces. I normally don't like corn tortillas but these were actually great! It didn't have that bitter flavor I have experienced with other corn tortillas in my past. The owner informed me that it was because their tortillas are organic, non-gmo and homemade. We also ordered the grilled elote (Mexican corn covered in cheese, mayo, spices) which was delicious. I will definitely be coming back with my husband. First time here. New business, opened a week ago. Ran by husband and wife duo. Menu is different,but inclusively latino. Tacos, Tortas, and Tapas. With it being our first time, we wanted to try a variety of items. I ordered a Mexican street corn that had a aioli and Cotija on it, we shared a torta from 18 hour roasted lechon, we shared an order of chicken empanadas as well as shared a Mexican mole pizza and Fried Bananas (maduros). We had two Aguas Frescas made with the hibiscus flower and lime. Service was fast and friendly from the wife and part owner. We ordered a few items based on her recommendations. First off the food is great, there is an open kitchen so you can see everything being done as well as a visible juice bar. The husband is known for his juices and according to the napkins is called the liquid chef. Portions were a good size for the price, we got two empanadas per order, there was a nice amount of fried bananas in the order and the torta was quite big. I ended up having to take most of the Mexican pizza because it was so large. I thought we had not ordered enough food and I left with a box. The corn was also beautifully charred. The prices were good for the Tapas and the sides. Higher than we are used to (we live in Mexican town)but are in no crazy high. We ordered two of the hibiscus Aguas Frescas and it was amazing. BUT This was probably the only thing I was disappointed in comma was the fact that a large is only about 16 oz and costed $18 for two of them. Now I'm from Southwest Detroit where you can buy 32 oz of hibiscus agua fresca for about 2 or 3 dollars. Now, don't get me wrong I know that this is a special recipe and takes preparation but when I go back there is no way I am paying $8.50 for a beverage that does not contain alcohol LOL. However I will come back for food because of course that was great and I will come back to try an espresso as all as one of their hand-made juices. I have my eye after the watermelon mint and lime juice. Now to the atmosphere, that was also nice. We enjoyed the quiet small and cozy restaurant that had a very contemporary and upscale feel. Beautiful wood,and industrial touches. Old fashioned Edison light bulbs, beautiful metal chandeliers etc. The owner named Heidi was very hospitable and struck up conversation concerning the chairs when I found how much spring was in the stool. Now in general I hate the kind of stools that they have. They are the cheap kind of Ikea stools that do not have a large area for your butt, so you keep slipping off. Now me being a bigger girl was quite disappointed that this was most of the seating. However Heidi explained that most of the furniture and insides of the restaurant are custom-built and there was a mishap concerning the tables and the bar stools. And somehow the stools ended up being taller than the tables, so now those are are actually at the juice bar. So we ended up sitting at the juice bar which was great because we got a good view of the entire restaurant. Prices Now we paid about $50 for lunch which is about $30 more then we generally spend for a weekday lunch since we have weekday lunches together quite frequently. I would probably come back for dinner in order to not feel so guilty about spending that much money on food lol. This is a great addition to Dearborn and one that my husband and I have been waiting on for a while, so go and check it out. Support small business owners plus the food is amazing. read more

Lovely restaurant in a so-so location. Great service -- knowledgeable staff, fabulous decor, and great food. This is a "nouveau" Latino restaurant. They take common foods we know & amp up the flavor & presentation. The chef is pretty accomplished & was actually the one cooking. Went for lunch with coworkers. We all ordered various tacos, patatas bravas, and maduros. They also give you 15 individual salsa bottles--each unique in its flavor & positioned from mild to hot. I taste tested them all & enjoyed the brown-ish avocado salsa the most. I ordered the short rib tacos--great flavor but the meat itself was a little dry & chewy. Maduros were alright, would have preferred the plantains to be riper. Horchata was on par. The restaurant was pretty empty for a Friday lunch. I think this is due to the location. Also the food is expensive...it's good quality (small portions tho) so I don't mind but it caught me off guard. Tacos here are life changing. I loved absolutely everything about the food at M Cantina. I loved how passionate the owners are about their business and best believe it shows! They're running the damn place! It was so hard narrowing down what to order but we started with the salsa trio- I could bathe in the bean salsa then moved on to the Mexican street corn, I just got the original and it was delish. Next were the tacos. We ordered shrimp, duck and the special of the day- steak fajita tacos. It truly is impossible to pick a favorite. Each had its own amazing flavor and was made to perfection. We didn't stop there, had to try some dessert! Tried the cinco leches cake, churros w/ avocado ice cream, and the sorbet trio- green apple w/basil, prickly pear and pina colada. As good as the cake and churros we're the sorbets we're all bursting with flavor and so fresh just what my palette needed to finish my meal with. We were also surprised with the mint tapioca pudding, a must try! Please be patient waiting for your food as it is being FRESHLY prepared and fresh food takes time, it's absolutely worth it. And because the "chef" has an over inflated ego, he refuses to make any modifications to the dishes. I just needed no creama sauce on top. And it was an absolute no. first and last time I'll be visiting this place. Beware: do not come here if you have food allergies as they are not accommodating at all. It was my first time here with a friend who's been there once before, I was asking the waitress if they'd be able not to put the guacamole on a taco I was hoping to order as I don't eat tomatoes or onions. She proceeded to give me weird looks and kept saying that they don't do substitutions in a very RUDE way. Anytime I'd ask a question she would raise her eyebrows and look at us like we're dense for not knowing their menu. She proceeded to tell me things like "well you're at a Mexican restaurant, everything is made with tomato and onion" okay? I've gone to several Mexican restaurants and am always able to find something to eat. We asked how the shrimp was cooked (fried or grilled) and she looked at us while again raising her brows as if we were dumb and said "huh? Neither." So we kinda just starred for a min and finally we were fed up with her unhelpful attitude. So finally we told her we're leaving as we don't eat anything on the menu, but in reality we only wanted to leave because of her horrendous and rude demeanor. I wouldn't have minded so much and probably would've stayed and ordered something had she not been so unpleasant and distasteful. read more

The food and variety is great here but the customer service borders on abusive. When I tried to order a margarita without salt, I was told that no substitutions are allowed and I could not get a margarita without salt. I asked why, when it would take less time and fewer ingredients, the waitress said it was not possible - take the margarita with salt or order something else. I asked for salt on half the rim and she repeated her first comment that no substitutions are allowed. I gave in and ordered the margarita and watched her go to the bar and salt my entire glass and make my margarita! The roasted tomato salsa is delicious and we (were allowed) to order some for take-out. When we asked for an order of chips to go with the salsa (that they apparently don't offer), the waitress just smiled and said that may take a while. When we asked a second waitress about the chips, she laughed at us. Instead of telling us that chips aren't offered for take-out (because apparently the waitress felt she had already covered that before and couldn't be bothered to politely state that), the wait staff took a passive-aggressive position of ignoring us while we sat there and waited for chips that were never coming. I don't know what version of customer service they're practicing here but it changed our impression of what could have been a great evening and a place I would have returned to, but no more. No food is so good that I would want to be treated this way, especially with a bill and undeserved tip, close to $300. I had a fantastic meal here with some very friendly and warm service. I ordered a Refresh juice blend of watermelon, lime and mint. It was excellent and paired well with the spicier salsas. The tlayuda flatbread was something I would absolutely order again. I also tried the ceviche which was fresh and flavorful, but just slightly sweeter than I would prefer. The variety of salsas they serve with your meal are great and I really loved trying out the variety of pairings. Since I sat at the juice bar, I could see the desserts being plated. This place is amazing. It is small but awesome food. We had reservation for a group. And when arrived we were taken into garage. Garage has been utilized well. Waitress was awesome. She explained each section of the menu as most of were there for the first time. Tried chips and trio with different sauces. I tasted almost with all the sauces. Bean dip was good. Also ordered plantain chips which comes up with avacado salsa and Chipotle aioli. I liked Chipotle aioli very much. Had chicken tinga tacos which is also good. I didn't had any drinks. Few others ordered drinks. Glasses that came with that are different and very appealing. Small place so if you plan go with more than 4 better to have reservation. Not impressed for what you'll pay when the bill comes. They don't do any food substitutions, which would be fine if the food was worth it. $15 for 3 just okay (small) tacos is a bit much. They also advertise drinks that are all non-alcoholic. The drink was good but as another reviewer stated, why have a whole bar with no alcohol? We asked for flour tortillas but we're given corn. The waitress rectified this, however, the woman manager came over and gave us a hard time about wanting to switch. She said "our corn tortillas are really good; so try it and if you don't like then I'll bring you the flour tortillas." The establishment seems more pretentious than they ought to be for the food quality. Average at best and likely won't return. Imperial in Ferndale is much better quality, half the price, and with superb drinks! Also recommend La Salsa in Dearborn for more authentic Mexican. read more

Last night, Friday 9/7/18, I planned to meet 3 friends at 5:15. I arrived to find one friend sitting at a front side table for two. She glares saying they won't seat us till we are all present. Mind you, the restaurant was empty except for two people in the back. I inquire if we can be seated now as two of us are here. I am reprimanded that it is their policy to not sit anyone until all are present. I comment that the place is empty. She is snarky and rude as she goes on about their policy. Mind you, my friend and I are in our mid 60's and she has a cast on her left arm. There is only one low table vs high tops. She needs a low table to accommodate her mobility. I ask to speak to the manager, you guessed it, she is the manager. I comment on the American's Disability Act that my friend needs that low table and our other friend is in parking lot. The manager is now confrontational about not sitting us, what if a table of 6 walks in... we are surrounded by empty tables. I take pictures commenting I will post on Yelp, she says I hope you do. I had read their poor Yelp reviews regarding their seating policy, and didn't believe it. This is the first time I have ever made a negative review. This restaurant should be banded until they are patron friendly. We will never return. read more

NO BLACKS ALLOWED should be the sign in their window. In todays world its shocking of the blatant racism of some establishments! Myself and another black man entered the M Cantina on a Sunday in Dearborn Mi during Ramadan. The restaurant was absolutely empty with only one customer sitting at the bar. Not understanding why this was a reservation only establishment due to the lack of customers inside. We expressed our name of our reservation and informed the hostess we were roughly 30 minutes early. She said acknowledged this also and replied we would need to wait until an additional server arrived to serve us due to them only having one working server at the moment. This puzzled me because scanning the room there was not one customer occupying any tables. Noticing plates of food on the table we assumed the employees must have been having the meal on the table. We agreed to wait and asked to be seated at a table. At this point another employees emerged with a very unwelcoming attitude and said we could not sit at any open tables to wait and we needed to wait at the bar. Her attitude clearly did not want us in their restaurant. It was as if they were afraid of us being in the restaurant with no people. We simply left. read more

I'll start with the positive. Outstanding fish tacos. Honestly, really good fish tacos. This place is weird and very inflexible. Good luck eating here if you have kids. Good luck if you have any allergies, or just don't want a certain ingredient. If it's not on the menu, you can't have it. If an item has an ingredient you don't want, tough, you're going to get it anyway, maybe you'll be able to pick it off or out. Want ketchup, nope, you can't have it. I sort of understand a chef's or owner's fetish like need for purity of his/her vision, but it comes off as arrogant, and it's annoying. I drove by many other Mexican restaurants on my way to M Cantina based on Yelp reviews. Next time, my drive will be shorter "Do you have a children's menu, or can you make a quesadilla?" "No." My elementary aged son had to deal with plain three piece chicken wings. He didn't deal with them well. M Cantina doesn't separate the wings into the two parts everyone else on the planet does. He asked, as only a ten year can, if they had BBQ sauce or ketchup. "No." Charming. My mistake was staying after the overly efficient and rarely seen again waitress explained the rules in the first sixty seconds of our experience. Items on the menu will be delivered as described with no substitutions. Tacos come in threes and there are no substitutes. If it's not on the menu, you can't have it. My daughter is allergic to milk. She ordered rice and beans, and a side of guacamole. The rice and beans arrived with cheese, the guac without chips. Weird, and not super safe. She left hungry, as did my son. Completely my fault, because I should have left, I'll remedy that by not returning. Good luck. Absolutely wonderful! My husband and I enjoyed my birthday dinner at M Cantina tonight. it reminded me of how critical good service and wonderfully flavored food are.
