It is an easy, reliable choice for a fast casual cafe meal. A new location is planned for 4th Street in San Rafael. The bakery changed ownership in 2021, and while quality remains high, it no longer feels as special as it once did when ex-Tartine alums established the cafe. The menu stayed the same, the dining space is a bit more worn, and bathrooms could use more frequent attention. Service is friendly, but can be slow. I still enjoy stopping in, particularly on a sunny day to enjoy the outdoor space, but things haven't felt quite as special since the original owners moved on. read more

This used to be my favorite shakshuka when the restaurant opened. Every time I would come to town I would order it. It's been a few years since I've been for a visit, but it was on my list of must visit spots. Not sure what changed or if it was an off day but it did not taste the same and I didn't care for it. came on valentine's day, a saturday around 11am. line was quite long and waited around 10 mins. service at the register was meh, a bit stiff and colder than i would have liked. french toast (8/10) unfortunately maple syrup was $2.99 extra, but was sitll good without. the bread is egginess without being too much, and is cooked to a good tenderness (soft without being TOO mushy). the blueberry compote is PERFECT with it, balancing the bread with the right amount of sweetness and tartness. the strawberry compote is good too, though i like the flavor and texture change that the blueberry one provides. fried egg sandwich (5/10) the sandwich is oily, and since everything is pretty fried and similar in texture it kinda mushes together. the bacon was way too soft. thankfully the arugula side salad and getting pickled veggies as my side really balances out the sandwich. it provides a good acidity to cut through the oil and saltiness. the carrots were good and not as vinegar-y as i expected (a plus!). the aioli is good, though i wish it provided more flavors. overall, it's a bit bland and i just wish it had some onion/garlic or even a bit of pepper. hot mocha with oat milk (3/10) it was very watery and strong/bitter, so i had to add a packet of sugar and a lot of creamer (thankfully they had a pitcher). not my type would not come back here, unless i really craved the french toast. read more

Love this place -- hands down my favorite. Parking was surprisingly easy. There's street parking, but we parked across the street in the lot by the music shop (it's closed on weekends, which makes it even easier). Zero stress before carbs -- we love to see it. It has that super local, neighborhood energy where everyone clearly knows exactly what they're ordering before they even walk in. Always a good sign. The bread basket? Unreal. The soup was divine -- comforting, flavorful, and exactly what you want on a cozy day. And the bread somehow manages to feel indulgent and wholesome at the same time. Warm, hearty, and clearly made with care. The space itself is just as inviting -- warm, relaxed, and effortlessly charming. And the pastries... they looked dangerous in the best way. This was our first visit to San Anselmo, and we parked right across from M.H. There wasn't much of a line yet, and the board outside promised a caprese sandwich, so we dove in. Oh my, what a sumptuous sandwich. The bread was divine - chewy, but nut heavy. At first I wondered how I would finish this, but the whole platter, with excellent fruit and arugula salad on the side, was far lighter than I expected. Good lord. I'm going to try to find the right words...I told a friend on the phone, lets say that you put an HVAC salesman in front of a stove with a recipe and asked him to make you breakfast...that's what it seemed like they did today. My "Soft Scramble" was a pile of astonishment. It was so unrefined that it was an insult the the ingredients. There was nothing soft about the eggs, they were overcooked. The only thing soft on the plate was the watery run-off from the vegetables they heaped into the eggs: Too many chewy mushrooms and HUGE. Too many cherry tomatoes. I had to dig to find the eggs. The leeks were strips of inedible ribbon. The toast? I think it had been toasted yesterday and left on the top of their oven overnight and then reused today. I had to get up from the table and ask for butter to make it edible and still I worried whether I was going to break a crown. The pickled vegetables? Again, HUGE, hard and barely pickled. I will refrain from criticizing the service because they are all unaware of the nightmare in which they are working. Bless their hearts. I was so sad and annoyed. People think they can buy a restaurant with recipes and wholesale accounts and staff and just run it, "business as usual" but they are wrong. I went in and asked if they had sold the restaurant and was told, "yes." I imagine some tech-bro's wife or some hedgefund community doodler wanted a pet project with zero idea about food or food quality or how to treat and retain employees because what happened to MHBB is astonishing. It's rude and insulting to anyone who opened this restaurant and put in their best to keep the name and claim to be catering to the same people. But then again, this is par for the course or, from my vantage point, everything wrong with what's happened in Marin in a nutshell. Faux authenticity. Zero care. This is now all about the money. You know a place is good when they sell out of items within half hour of opening! I had the breakfast there two days in a row and the portions were big and the food was amazing. I've been calling San Anselmo home since 1996 and I finally caved to M.H. Bread and Butter's charm... I often drive by and wonder what's behind the crazy crowds, considering it's not exactly on the way to anywhere. I chatted with the lovely manager, Ms. Jenny, who swore by the lemon bread - which was indeed good, but I suspect would've been amazing straight out of the oven. Apparently, the Queen Aman, raspberry croissants, and their famous 'medium country' bread are must-trys too. Brahim, the owner's brother, was super friendly and spilled the beans on what makes working there so great. If you're ever in San Francisco, do yourself a favor and swing by Marin County - it's my personal paradise. Turns out, Marin County has some pretty rockin' credentials, being associated with the likes of the Grateful Dead, Metallica, and Huey Lewis and the News... and I've got a connection to the area that'll make you green - Bonnie Raite, Grace slick, Santana and Sean Penn used to live here as well. read more

I love bakeries and I love them most when they have French pastries. I recently stopped here on my way to redwoods. I was looking for something delicious to fill me up for the day. I ordered the chicken sandwich and also a baguette. I had a pastry as well which was decent but nothing too enticing. The food and service what little there was given half of it was self serve were decent, but the experience was extremely unpleasant. After ordering you are given a number, but the coffee is pick up when number is called and the food delivered by waiter. Unfortunately you are lucky to get any utensils. There is no place to grab any silverware other than the to go boxing counter with cardboard utensils. Service is was insofar when you communicate with them they are polite. You have to clean up after yourself, get your coffee, and advocate for yourself where the utensils are because the server didn't give you any. This is fine for a cafe, but at least provide cutlery and napkins customers can access! The shakshuka was decent but I was disappointed it tasted of only tomatoes and SO MUCH LICORICE. The coriander was not discernible, and I suspect the replaced caraway with fennel or anise seeds and added a giant scoop more. I could not taste any cumin flavor. So instead of a mildly spicy and earthy spiced sauce, the sauce was flat tomato with a whole mouth of licorice. That isn't shakshuka. The mushroom scramble looked unappetizing grey but I can tell they dry cooked the marinated mushrooms so it was very savory despite the blandness of the eggs with four halves of cherry tomatoes. The arugula salad was fine but I'm not clear why I wouldn't make this at home. I specifically dine out to eat food I do not make at home. Topped with grapes and 1-2 pieces of cantaloupe. In short the food was fine, and can make you feel like you are spending money on food, balanced meal. The bread is good, but the overall experience made me not enjoy the food, and lost desire to buy the bread. The seating reminds me of beachfront haphazardness. It is also hard not to wonder about the community's unsavory elements given a white and blond family were unwilling to sit and share a large picnic table with non-white presenting people. Well it was all great - except for the bread they used on my Benedict. Gorgeous fruit platter and Benedict . But yesterdays bread sliced and roasted was hard as a rock. I couldn't get the knife through it. I had to place half my Benedict on a napkin because the first half was so touch it was rolling around on my plate and going to push half of my Benedict on the table top. It was knocking my jaw out to chew it, like gnawing on crispy rubber. Ruined a wonderful otherwise plate. If you're going to use day old bread, make it palatable. The service was overall good even though our lattes were slow to come out (would not recommend the hot chocolate as it tasted watered down and bitter). I will say the flavor is good however I got the fried egg sandwich it was 18$ plus tax and it was only one egg with massive pieces of bread so there was only egg in the middle and about 2-3 inches of bread with nothing you can add another egg for like 4$ but it should initially come with 2 eggs. My bf got the Shakshouka and it was good but it came out to like 28$ one of the poached eggs was cooked correctly the other one was not which idek how you do that. It's always a sad day when a restaurant changes your favorite dish on the menu - but this one hit close to home as this was my favorite dish in Marin for many years. Gone are the days of smoked McFarland Springs trout for their green cous cous salad. It was akin to a hot kipper smoked salmon, but higher quality and better flavor. It's now been replaced by...lox? (slimy and soft). Lox never belongs on a salad. Period. This seems to be a cost efficiency exercise as they've added a lox bagel to their menu.
