We have bought their Panettone Milanese every Christmas for over 25 years. They used to have a venue in Union Square and it was always part of our family holiday tradition. Not much to say about Rulli that isn't already said here, except... today an out of town guest wanted donuts, and donut alley is a kind of go-to in Larkspur. But at 9:30 on Sunday we weren't the only ones with that idea. Line looked about 30 minutes long, so my friend wanted something else. Like what? eggs and bacon said she. That would normally be the province of a diner, or failing that a Denny's. Of course, the local Denny's is history which was a big loss for many people in many ways. Amy's? really, does anybody actually go there? not at midnight or maybe 1 am. I miss going there when i couldn't sleep, get a bowl of terrible vegetable soup, a piece of pie and coffee. Can't sleep, may as well stay nourished through the night. Anyway, all this is to say there really aren't many diner-type restaurants around southern Marin. On a whim we walked over to Rulli. For the longest time, Rulli mainly sold pastries, specialty small items like cannolis and Italian macaroons, plus minor league sandwiches. But walking in, spied a table tent on the counter mentioning they now serve Eggs Benedict. Deus ex machina! To cut this to the end, this is a great deal for brunch, apparently only started providing it in past 6 months or so. Eggs were perfectly medium, served on focaccia with smooth Hollandaise, fried spinach (would be better with garlic rather than onions, but that's a personal preference), breakfast home fries with bacon. I used to be a regular before Covid. A lot has changed. I went in to buy a fruit tart--the only person working in the bakery area sold me the only fruit thing she had--a prima something. It looked lovely covered with raspberries. I wanted cookies, but the mouthwatering trays had been replaced by prepackaged bags: 1 lb, 1/2 gluten free. Or a $9 sachet of a few tiny cookies. I got the sachet. There were no options without nuts. My total came to $59! The taste test: the cookies were so stale! We had to toss all of them. They tasted rancid. The Tarte--we ate the raspberries but I'm allergic to nuts and my husband said the filling was bordering on curdling. The section of the store that had lovely wines is shuttered. No one was in the bakery area and now I know why. It is horrible. The cafe area was a little more lively. No one was outside. I'm sad. We had them make a special fruit Tarte for our wedding 25 years ago. The woman who helped me seemed to put on airs and be bothered to serve the only person who had the misfortune to walk in. read more

First of all let me say I usually love this place. Can't say the service has always been real friendly but the food is always great. Until my last experience. We usually buy the San Francesca cake every year for my birthday-a wonderful fluffy and formerly very berry creation of cake, berries, whipped cream, pastry cream and meringue bits. This year when we went to order the small cake (for $48 as advertised on the webpage) they told us it would be $52? When queried they told us if we'd ordered it online they would have honored that price but since the price had gone up recently to $52 and we were ordering over the phone we'd have to pay the higher price ‍. But what really made us disappointed is that in the past it has been full of berries ...this time there were slices with maybe one or two berries to none. At this price point they shouldn't be cutting corners especially for what is supposed to be "filled with raspberries." Very disappointing experience-gonna have to find a new birthday cake. read more

So many delicious looking cakes to choose from how do you decide?! I ended up choosing the St. Honore which consists of puff pastry, Italian cream with vanilla sponge cake based with rum with chocolate and fresh whipped cream. I bought it on a Saturday and served it Sunday night. I was worried that the puff pastry would be too soggy, but the vanilla cake helped create a barrier. The Italian pastry cream is smooth and just the right amount of sweetness. The cream puffs that were added to the cake was filled with that same cream and it was me just filled with air. It was stuffed throughout and hefty feeling. Puff pastry had such beautiful layers as the cake itself. I would highly recommend getting it for any special occasion. Side note-parking can be tough since it's downtown so be patient. Also don't forget to get a number on the display case when you arrive. Packaging was also thought out with the cardboard barrier to prevent damage of the cake. read more

Got Panettone? Oh Emporio Rulli, how I love you so! I used to love people watching at the Union Square location (closed) during ice skating season this time of year. It was actually great for people watching year-round without being stuck in a department store, unless you like department stores. Everything is made with love and passion. From coffee to croissants, everything is divine and authentic Italian. Thank you for taking me down memory lane, and we are so blessed the Larkspur location is still around and thriving. I will make it to Ristobar in SF's Marina district one of these days. Parking is more difficult in the city now, and I don't want to deal with smash & grabs (had enough of those). I've never been to this place before, and I didn't spend alot of time here, but I love it already. Why? Because it reminds me of an Italian bakery in San Francisco's Northbeach, aka "Little Italy." The wood displays, metal trim, and glass cases are the same. Emporio Rulli is a special place, it resembles an old school Italian bakery and cafe. It is the way it should be, when time slows down for us to enjoy the nicer things of life. A latte or cappuccino and your favorite pastry or cookies. It is a local institution with classic Italian pastries, cakes, cookies, gelato, and lunch items. You can't go wrong with anything you get here. Their cakes are beautifully packaged in a gold package with a ribbon. I have purchased baked goods over the years and their quality is superb. It is located in tiny downtown Larkspur and is one of the Italian establishments in the area. You know you're at the right place when you see the locals hanging out and enjoying their cappuccinos and pastries. I came by recently and had a cappuccino with oat milk and a buttery croissant. Amazing! I also brought home a bag of their Fantasia coffee, a slice of toasted panettone, and a custard bombolini. Pattatone!! Need I say more? I just got introduced to Pattatone a few years ago but wanted to try a more tradition version. The first ones I had was chestnut and pure chocolate. This time I was to to Emporio Rulli to get the more traditional golden raisins, candies orange version. And boy it is great! It's been a week and I am still tasting it to make the experience last. But I assumed since thier cakes are so amazing, I couldn't risk it! So the night before, I ordered it online: BRASILIANA (6-8 servings)- $40 A light Chocolate sponge cake brushed with espresso liqueur; filled with whipped cream sprinkled with chunks of Domori milk chocolate; covered with milk chocolate shavings. This cake is SO yummy! It's creamy and moist and not too sweet! The whole family--including my grandmother enjoyed it! I love all the generous amount of whipped cream and chocolate shavings! This amazing cake comes in 3 different sizes: 6-8 Servings - $40 10-12 Servings - $55 12-14 Servings - $75 If you want even larger you'll have to call them. For a written message on the cake, it's an additional $2.60, which is a small slab of white board (or was it white chocolate?) written with chocolate syrup. Pick up was very easy and they wrapped it up very nicely with a shiner seal to look like a lovely present. For the quality and lovely package you're getting, it's quite a reasonable price! I noticed the price has gone up by $5 this year and it's quite understandable! And yes, I will still make the 35 minute drive and pay toll only to pick this bad boy up! read more

I hate to give less than optimal reviews but this last purchase of the sacripatina cake was very disappointing. Too much syrup which rendered the cake layers like wet rags. The bottom layer was sitting in liquid. The cream is supposed to be coffee zabaglione chantilly but tasted like plain whipped cream. My family would normally devour the whole cake longing for more. This time only a little over half a cake was consumed and no one wanted to take leftovers. So sad. I love Emporio Rulli's version of sacripantina. No bakery in the Bay Area even comes close.
