Phil and Lorraine, the business owners, have been operating the Mill Valley Coffee Shop on Locust and Miller Streets in Mill Valley for years (35-40?). They are wonderful people who really care about the food and service and, especially, their customers! It is the "old style" coffee shop. It even has the coffee shop counter and stools! And although updated, as would be expected, the menu serves "coffee shop" meals. By that, I don't mean the proverbial "greasy spoon" coffee shop food. A diverse menu with all of the coffee shop standards and then some!!! When we dine at the Mill Valley Coffee Shoo, we feel like family and get what we would expect - home style cooking (from Phil) and sevice from a Mom to her family (Lorrain). We've been dining there for almost 30 years, and as long as we can, we intend to keep eating Phil's wonderful food and enjoying Lorraine's wonderful service!!! read more

I love this place. Literally a Mom and Pop place. It's sad that this style of coffee shop seems to be vanishing in Marin. I drive here from Fairfax because it's the perfect old school eggs, crispy hash browns, crispy bacon, and toast place. This simple breakfast, lunch, and even dinner plate feeds the soul. Drove from LA and arrived @ 06:00 in Mill Valley for a coffee to wake up me up. The brewed coffee is like such you can picture in a hallmark movie and the two ladies are the sweetest company you could ask for. Truly feels like home. read more

Absolutely essential to have this restaurant in the area. Breakfast, lunch or anytime in between when you're looking for an easy place to have coffee and pastry. The menu is basic and offers the standards found on most diners around the country. There were quite a few in Marin decades ago, at least one in every one of our small towns. MV Coffee Shop has been here for 38 years, through floods and Covid and other downturns. I've tried so many times to like this place. It's super close to my house. I give up. The owner operators act like they are doing you a favor. They are just plain rude. The food is expensive, (very greasy potatoes and meats, sloppy slimy eggs), and mediocre at best. The place is definitely not clean. One of those sticky counter floor types. Cute bustling coffee shop with a tiny book store. We had the Caesar salad, chicken sandwich with fries. Salad was ok nothing I'd crave. Hubby said the chicken sandwich was great but he loves fries anything. I tasted it and it was fine. The area has a vibrant flow that really made the day fun! I love old school diners and supporting local businesses and I really want to love this place. I live a short walk away but sadly cannot recommend Mill Valley Coffee shop. On all my visits here the service was rude, the food was terrible and the prices are extremely expensive. I was hoping these problems were isolated incidents but finally on my last visit when the food was so inedible I left most of it on my plate and still had to pay the nearly $40 tab (for an egg breakfast and black coffee for one!) My family has been coming to the Mill Valley Coffee Shop for years. Phil and Loraine are two hard working and wonderful people. The omelettes and hash browns are the best. Such a beautiful historic diner! If you love mom and pop diners this is the place to stop and support. Food looks great, we stopped a few times for their mochas cause they make them the way I love. I ordered a cheeseburger, I figured you can't go wrong, right? my burger patty was hard, but still pink inside, the smell was disgusting, it did not smell right. My side green salad was yellow with hominy and already drenched in Italian dressing, when I asked for ranch. I should have taken a picture. I love everything about this place. It's a throwback to the old coffee shops of the 1950s and 60s, where the owner knows your name, the refills come quick, and the food is prepared just for you. in this age of Starbucks, it's nice to know there are still cafés where humanity matters. read more

Surprised my mom with a trip to the bay for her 45th the next morning we decided to go out to breakfast and this place was a dud. Service was nice and friendly but the food was flavorless and my party sent back 4/7 meals received. The atmosphere felt flat and kinda put a damper on the start of the day. First place we went after CA reopened. Seemed like prices went up a little but everything is going up and restaurants have been decimated so we sucked it up. Both had the Country Breakfast - huge portions :) two pancakes that are fluffy and big , eggs , choice of meat. My eggs were over hard and perfect. A lot of places don't cook them through. The walls are decorated with pictures of old Mill Valley - back when the homes were llke cabins. My own family has been here since the 40's so it was cool to see how things have changed. Oddly, I have never been in here before today - neither one of my parents were fans in the past but I wanted to give it a chance. -Dog Friendly!!!! Super friendly dog loving waitress - spoils local puppies! She asked if she could walk over to the car and give my pup a treat and a bowl of fresh water - super duper sweet. Very appreciated - I really love this lady even though I just met her. FOOD -Waffles w/ blueberries Smell amazing - like hot butter and vanilla simmering next to a loaf of fresh baked bread. They iron these round puppies the old fashioned way: small crimp iron, lots of butter, super flat, and crispy. Reminds me of how my mom used to make them back in the day. So cute: the waitress asked ma how much butter she wanted on her waffle; ma snapped back "A lot" - like don't even mess with me. The waitress came back and asked, "so like - all over, or like you want it to still be soft on top like it's covered but kinda still solid and melting." The waffle came out just as promised - mommy was very happy. Bold move buttering waffles like that instead of offering it up on the side - two bites was enough for me - put me in a special place. -Hash browns The best! Seriously they were perfect - not one oily-mushy- soggy centimeter and not one over-crisp edge. I would eat hashbrown's regularly if they always came like this. Sounds crazy but get them - I was impressed. -Eggs Benedict The portions are large and the Benedict is sized for sharing. They did not trip when I asked for bacon instead of ham - but may have charged me extra for the switch. All good if they did - it seriously came with a mountain of bacon. I think my favorite part of this breakfast was the surprise grilled tomato under the bacon. I'm one of those weirdos that hates raw tomatoes in anything but salsa - dead serious [visions of throwing cherry/heirlooms back at the chef]. These slices were like fire roasted salsa - absolutely fabulous. - Latte My iced latte hit the spot - I would order this again but couldn't drink it with just one shot. ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT - I honestly would not negotiate these given the price + location. -Blueberries: make the switch to fresh tasted like they were from a can but I could be wrong - never getting these again. Like my niece, I eat organic blueberries everyday [grandpa's fault] and these definitely aren't them. Even if you have to jack the price up a few bucks - make the switch. -Bacon: really needs to be thick applewood I love bacon, I just forget until I smell it. Today I actually woke up wanting bacon forgetting that bacon varies in quality. This bacon cured my craving but left me wondering why it wasn't that thick applewood I can get everywhere else in MV. I ate it all even after I was stuffed but it smelled better than it tasted. -My eggs - should have been over medium unless requested otherwise. Eggs on the Benedict weren't really poached to run - at all - more like soft boiled. Even though the food came quick, I was too hungry to send it back. I ate one egg without the yoke and just let the other sit. -Hollondaise: It wasn't that bright fresh creamy yellow looking sauce, more like a yellow that had been browned in browned butter. I didn't photograph it because it tasted better than it looked - didn't want to mislead you with the browned tint. Honestly it reminded me more of a browned butter gravy - very buttery in flavor and smooth and thick in texture - super rich. Had it been cut with acid - I probably could have really "handled it." It needed lemon - there was none that I could taste. After finishing my first muffin it was too much to handle. If it's going to be that heavy, then it should be served with a lighter pour. -Latte The one shot standard is not a good idea. One shot is never enough in that large of a cup - two shots should be the standard unless requested otherwise. -Maple Syrup carry it! Charge extra if you have to! Note: I feel a little guilty writing this review bc I actually enjoyed my time here - I just didn't really enjoy my food. I would go back for the coffee, 2 eggs over medium and some Adele's chicken sausage or a plain buttermilk or honey wheat waffle. read more

Nice lunch place, quiet usually. Don't expect a lot as it is a no nonsense diner. Sometimes this is all one needs. The cool thing is they play classical music and it's airy and bright. These guys are the quintessential diner and I was so happy to find them when I was walking around town looking for coffee. What I have observed is patrons coming inside, the owners knowing their names and their regular orders. Like I'm the movies! It feels so warm and comfortable! It's old school and we all need much more of this in our lives. They were hurting during the 2 years of street repairs and then 2 years of Covid.
