Drive up from SF and bought chicken and turkey versions. Cute little place. Went home and baked them since it's Fogest here in SF snd gray and cold. Sadly disappointing. I came here the same day I read a review on yelp because I have a weakness for not just pies, but especially a chicken pot pie with an excellent rating! It's in the Red Hill Mall in San Anselmo, quaint and so charming. But went straight in to this cake and pastry spot to order the chicken pot pie. The guy mentioned he had hot ones fresh out of the oven. I thought I was getting a couple to go and my husband had already eaten lunch, but because they were fresh out of the oven we had to go with those and just sit outside and enjoy it . They were so hot still but we couldn't stop. These chicken pot pies are made from scratch and the pastry is so delicious as well. I would totally come here and get multiples to just freeze and bake at home without the fuss from scratch! I think it's the owner who was helping us - I so appreciate him letting me know about the fresh ones that we could eat right then and there. I had to also try a hand pie, which I think was blueberry and it was so good. the pastry was so flaky. It was hard to break off a small controlled piece because it's so flaky . I should've probably bought two it didn't last long. The ambience is just a storefront, but the exterior has lots of seating at the mall in a sunny, bright family friendly area and you could have your dog & walk to the baseball field. Walk through the mall-and see cats to adopt. It was just a great outing overall to revisit an area, I hadn't been to in a while . I found myself doing a Yelp search for "meat pie" (don't ask), which led me to reviews for Red Hill Cake and Pastry, which reminded me I had meant to try this place years ago and forgot. That was when I rarely found myself at Red Hill shopping center,which I currently drive by four times daily on weekdays. So I finally stopped by for some meat pies. The shop name conjures up images of sweet confections, but the two cases in the hole-in-the-wall shop primarily feature savory pastry, British and Chinese style (there's also a baked pork bun, or char siu bao). I would have liked to try the shrimp pie, but it was sold out, so I took home two beef pot pies, one turkey one, and two "ballpark snackers" (like Americanized sausage rolls, or giant pigs-in-a-blanket). My daughters loved the hot dogs. The beef pie was made with minced beef, not chunks of beef like a steak and kidney pie. I think I preferred the chunks of turkey in the turkey pie. But the real star is the crust--this is no cheap Potemkin village style pot pie with only a top crust. It's the real double-crust deal. And also very reasonably priced at, I think $6.50. Definitely worth the trip for old school hearty comfort food at old school prices. read more

A small but mighty bakery pastry shop in San Anselmo. Discovered it when I went dir my favorite froyo shop swirl. They are in the same small shopping strip. We tried the chicken, turkey, and veggie pot pie all three have been so good. There is a perfect smaller size and so a regular eater can have just one or if you normally eat two serving go for two different tastes. Also tried a cronut and that was tasty as well. They have a clever bun with a burger paddy and cheese baked inside (!) they call it mini cheeseburger and it's a perfect snack or nice lunch item beside any salad. We will stop here more often to discover more and make the pot pies a stable in our weeknight dinner when we're too lazy I cook :) read more

I wish I could talk him into making U,P, Pasty's- The Story about Pasty's- When you think of the Upper Peninsula's favorite food, what's the first thing that comes to mind? Pasties, right? The "pot pie without a pot", pasties have become a northern Michigan staple. Not only are they a flavorful handheld pastry but are also rich in Michigan history. The pasty came to the United States when Cornish miners immigrated here in the 1840s. The dish can be dated all the way back to 1150 in England. The pasty gained popularity with miners because it was easy to bring into the mines, kept them full throughout the long work days and could stay warm up to 10 hours. If the pasty did become cold, miners could easily heat them up by placing it on a shovel and warming it up over a heat-lamp candle. A pasty once started a mining fire when a miner forgot about his pasty warming and the lard caught fire. We were looking for a pie on Pi Day and found that most of the pie shops around were closed on sundays! Lame! This place came up so we thought to check it out. The reviews said it was amazing, I would say it was OKAY. We grabbed the chicken and veggie pot pies which were so-so, and then a lemon meringue pie which I thought the meringue was a little chewy. I did really enjoy the snickerdoodle cookie we bought! But that was not why we came there. Service was quick, parking was easy, everything was very inexpensive. Chicken pot pie has classic flavors and ingredients and so very tasty, however, it needs more chicken which seems sparse - just a few cubes. 5 stars for stellar flavor and ingredients, 3 stars for want of more chicken. Marie Calendar pie has more meat and similar in taste. The bacon spinach quiche is to die for!!! Yummy. 10 stars. I will only go back for this, load up for the freezer. The spinach mushroom quiche was bland. The lemon meringue pie looked beautiful with it's toasty meringue top. The meringue was rubbery and fused into a single tough mat where I had to chop through it. Awful!! The lemon curd had good texture, but it was really tangy, slightly bitter and not quite right. Would never order this again. 1 star. The pork bun has waaayyyy too much salt and Chinese 5 spice and the pork was diced and not larger cubes. Pork cubettes were dry. It needed more sauce. Not like anything I ever had in San Francisco which have a perfect balance, of salt, spice, sauce and larger pieces of pork. The filling was generous and heavy for it's size, but just too intense for me. The pumpkin pie is a winner. Creamy pumpkin custard and just enough traditional spices. 5 stars for the masterful crusts on these 4 pie items. Buttery, flaky and perfectly baked. 5 stars for the bread part of the pork bun which was buttery like a dinner roll. 5 stars for the owner who was super friendly. Hit and miss. We stopped for coffee at Peet's but I didn't like their pastry selection. My husband then noticed this small hole in the wall bakery next door. We ordered 2 mini cherry pies and 1 chicken pot pie. The cherry pies didn't even make it to the car. We inhaled them before our lattes were ready. Pork buns in Marin? They're not easy to find & I actually found good ones here. So good that I actually came in three times in a week & there would have been a fourth, but I was always too excited to enter & didn't notice the store hours posted on the front. Note they are closed only on Sundays. Everything is made in house. The owners are so sweet; always smiling & accommodating. Their store front is tiny. If you don't walk Redhill Center often, you may have past it unknowingly between Round Table & Peet's. Chicken pot pie is also really tasty, but it is really about those pork buns. The pork is lean & there is no dye added to the meat mixture which is always an added bonus to me. They've got a couple cases of sweets & cakes, but I'm a savory girl. There are things that look somewhat like bagel dogs, but the "bun" is more of a flaky bread consistency than bagel. (RIP Marin Bagel Co.) The dog was also full of parts, so back to the pork buns. Oh those succulent pork buns. Everything is reasonably priced, so I may try more, but after going somewhere around 20 times, it's those pork buns that never let me down. This is just one of those little secrets that make me hesitant to yelp. Now, only if I could convince them to start making red bean buns. read more

After hiking 14 miles on the Palomarin trail, I was hungry but really just wanted to start my 2 hour drive home. I was driving through this town and saw Peet's. I got a coffee and thought about picking up a burrito nearby. But I saw this little bakery and popped in and glad I did. I got a bbq pork bun and a Philly cheesesteak pastry. Delicious! I bought a few chicken pot pies and a shrimp pot pie to take home and they were yummy too. I need to go back and explore more of these cute towns and I will definitely go here again! This bakery is located inside the plaza with Safeway, CVS, Peet's Coffe, etc. I don't know why I never bothered to go inside but I'm very glad I did. They have some AMAZING pastries in this tiny hole-in-the-wall shop. Obviously, I went for some chicken pot pie and it was superb--with a price to boot! Fresh chicken pot pie is hard to find these days and almost everything about it from crust, gravy and ingredients was perfect. I will be coming here regularly for lunch. It's the perfect portion too. If you have not tasted one of Henry's famous pot pies (we LOVE the chicken, but today someone came in and said that her husband told her that they have the best vegetable pot pies and ordered two) you are really missing something! I never even liked pot pies before I tasted Henry's! Delicious! Chicken is always properly cleaned...I never encounter any grizzle or anything that is not real "chicken meat"! The veggie combination is terrific and the gravy, OMG! You must try them! Absolutely delicious and a real bargain for $4.50 each! He also has shrimp and beef! Give them a try! read more
