Before the pandemic ruined everyone's life I was being seen at 2 practices in north jersey - the first one didn't seem to understand why I would be bothered that my alopecia spots weren't healing and the second practice stopped taking insurance after my second appointment. As each injection is hundreds of dollars lmao that promising relationship ended quickly. Healthcare for the rich indeed. For the last 5 years I've been managing the patchiness on my own to inconsistent effect. Recently, another unrelated issue requiring surgery kicked me into high gear to find a new provider. I sought recs from my local FB group, friends and family, etc but they all kept leading me down cottage skincare and other lanes. It was actually a good old-fashioned Google search that led me to Dr. Patel. Bravo on winning the SEO game! From the moment I called (and rescheduled thrice due to car trouble - dang it MINI), the office was welcoming, accommodating, and scheduling relatively quick appointments. On my first visit, Dr.Patel and his team were thorough, curious, and caring. I felt so comfortable with them and I felt like I mattered. In many ways women become "invisible" after age 40 - add race and body size to the mix and it can be difficult to get the care and compassion needed to navigate health challenges. Dr. Patel suggested I get a full blood work up - and actually caught my low iron and anemia. So many somatic mysteries cleared up just because someone listened and cared. I have a surgical procedure scheduled in a few weeks that will bring me immediate comfort and the topical meds and injections Dr. Patel is giving me have restarted hair growth in some persistent patchy spots. I went in for lip fillers, 1ml of Restylane. It was my first time and I was very nervous. The…read morewaiting room is very clean and well decorated. Feels like a living room but still had the feeling of sterility that you want at a doctor's office. Within 10 minutes of arriving they led me to the "numbing room" which is a little nook where they put numbing cream on you and leave you to let it sit. Except... they left me in there for over half an hour. No one came by to explain the wait. I thought they forgot about me! Once I finally got to see Marla, she was very direct and explained things beautifully. She explained the risks and what to expect over the next few days along with what to do and what not to do. She took before and after pictures to compare. Her process is very good, though she does come off a little rude. But hey, I'm not there to make friends I'm there to get work done. After the appointment I was given an aftercare instruction sheet that reiterated what I was previously told by Marla. Very helpful. However, I'm not thrilled with the job she did filling my lips. It's not a botched job, it was only 1ml and was fairly evenly placed. If you look at the girls in the office, (including Marla as she fills her own lips) you'll get an idea of how your filler will look. I think she gave me a little too much of a "beak" that is more obvious when I tilt my head down. Also, she told me not to massage any bumps I feel as those are bruising, and to not listen to people on the internet saying its filler, that I could ruin her work if I did massage it. Guys. Listen. IT IS FILLER. If you dont massage out the bumps in the first few days you will have them for MONTHS. (leave it alone the first 2 days as you'll be pretty swollen and won't know what's what) The bumps that come from bruising feel different. You'll know the difference around day 3 to 7. So now the filler is fading (quicker than it should be but that's not necessarily her fault) and yet I still have the bumps. The bumps are not visible to others, but I can feel them with my tongue. Over all she did alright. It's a nice place and I may come back for other services, but not lip fillers.
