First things first: my hair looks great. I got a single process color, cut and blowout. The shade of red I got is beautiful, but they did NOT need to bleach my roots (which added hours and money to the process). I've achieved much brighter reds at home with dye and developer. The price was outrageous. For the services I got done, I usually pay $190 at my usual salon. I paid $350!!! And that did not include the tip. This was my most expensive trip to the salon -- ever. There was a dog in the salon the entire time, and I had dye all over my neck, my ears and my forehead when I got out. I'm no stranger to getting my hair dyed (I usually keep it red) but the amount of dye I had on my skin just reflected the lack of attention to detail. For the price point, I would've expected more. More everything: attention to detail, professionalism and a better ambiance. Won't be returning. If you want to spend an exorbitant amount of money on a mediocre haircut and dye job, go ahead. I wouldn't recommend this place to students in the area however. If you're looking for a balayage or highlights, you might have a better experience than I did (most of the pictures on their site are of those kinds of dye). My hair might be on the website now, I remember some pictures being taken of my hair... My husband has been going to Moda for nine years. Khalil is the BEST for men's cuts. I haven't settled on any one stylist for myself because they're all very good! I started making all my appointments here about a year and a half ago. Nothing but good things to say, except the stylist that did my wedding updo and make up overcharged. But I guess everyone overcharges for wedding services. I did look fantabulous :) UPDATE: I've since settled on Henry as my stylist. He's great. Nope. Very poor service and their health and COVID safety precautions are appalling. I was the first appointment of the day and it was obvious they hadn't cleaned the place the previous day. Countertops were dirty, hair all over the floor, etc. Unbelievable. And, their methods for checking the temperature of clients were a joke (e.g., "the thermometer reads your temperature at 92 degrees...ha ha ha isn't that funny". Well no because that means it's broken and isn't reading anyone's temperature correctly. Get one that works). The staff member who processed my credit card was super surly, did not say thank you, and really seemed to hate her job. I went to Moda salon twice and both times I went home disappointed. Both appointments I asked for roots and trim. The first time Lindsey took care of me. She was super nice but when I got home I noticed all the white hair as if it was never dyed. I called them the next day and spoke to Natalie, she offered to fix it but I was leaving town and never got the chance to go. Figured I'd give them another shot and this time Lauren took care of me. It felt like she didn't want to be there doing what she's doing. Didn't explain what she was doing and washed my hair only once after dyeing my hair. She was trying to rub the black dye out around my face and wasn't being very gentle about it. Blow out was beautiful but my hair stunk and had to rewash it when I got home. Then noticed all the black dye on my forehead and back of my neck. Not to mention they didn't offer any discount/compensation for my last appointment. And the owners kept arguing in front of clients. I LOVE Moda! Having my hair done has always felt like a chore - I've always hated how long it takes, how expensive it is, etc. Moda has changed that for me! I've been here for regular maintenance and also for drastic changes (once dyed my hair black, once had about 10 inches cut off). The staff is experienced, professional,and personable. For the most part the other customers are lovely. Every time I've gone I've enjoyed a glass of wine and pleasant conversation, and walked out extremely pleased with my hair. I'm so happy I stumbled across Moda yesterday as I was frantically trying to find salons open on a Monday! I made the major mistake of bleaching over box dye this weekend and ended up with bright orange hair and highlighter yellow roots. Natalie, the owner, responded promptly to my Yelp message and talked through what I wanted and what was possible this appointment. She was able to fit me in for an evening appointment that day and was so friendly over the phone. I was lucky enough to get an appointment with Isabel, who is literally the sweetest and most patient stylist I have ever had the pleasure to meet. She worked within my budget (very limited because I spent so much money at Sally's over the weekend!) and was very thorough in explaining the process and how she would correct the color so that we can continue to work towards my hair goals. Looking at the site you wouldn't be able to guess that in addition to women's styles the staff was experienced at cutting men's hair too, but this was a great experience. I was able to make an appointment same day and show up literally an hour after I called without having to wait at all. As for the cut, I showed the guy a picture of what I wanted on my phone and he was able to get it right away. At first I thought he was going fast but in reality he was just really good at what he was doing and was able to make short work of the shaggy head of hair I came in with in no time. He was really friendly, conversational, and also offered some great tips and products which work for my style in particular. Didn't pressure me into buying anything on the spot so I'll definitely be going back to buy product there as well as getting trims. I haven't been to any other places in New Brunswick and I don't think I ever will. read more

I went in and showed them a picture of what I wanted and walked out with something completely different. I'm a college student and spent over $300 including tip completely dissatisfied. I then asked to come back in for them to fix it and they were kind enough to get me in. However, the owner and hairdresser really pushed for me to get my haircut when and they then charged me $50 for a haircut. Then I had to tip. So I payed $350+ as a COLLEGE student for hair that I left there still completely dissatisfied with. I will not be going back. I reached out to the owner and she did not respond when I gave feedback about my experience. The only thing that would make my experience slightly better would be even a partial refund. I literally had the worst haircut of my life from Lauren, despite it being one of the most expensive haircuts I have gotten ($65 for just a cut, without tip). I told Lauren that I was looking to transition my grown out bob into a layered cut that would grow out really nicely. During the hair appointment her daughter came in, which I didn't mind, but because of that she ended up rushing to finish my hair and I ended up with 1 layer cut into my hair, and to top it off, I didn't realize till I got home and straightened it the next day, but my hair was 1 inch longer on the right side. I've been coming to Moda for 4 years now since moving to New Jersey. First hair salon I came to and have never looked back! Absolutely adore the owners, Natalie & Henry. A locally owned business where it feels like I am walking into Cheers every visit. It feels like a second home. Outside of the personable and friendly atmosphere, the stylists are excellent and aveda trained. I had one stylist I saw for three years who left to go on her own and then moved to a new stylist and have been extremely satisfied with the same quality cut and color. Not a good haircut or experience. It all started when they called me the day before my appointment to tell me that Josh wasn't going to come to New Brunswick for the cut I'd booked with him. I'd read a lot of great reviews for him so I was bummed, but the receptionist told me I could still come in at the same time to have Janet cut my hair. I was a little nervous because I couldn't find any reviews for Janet, but the receptionist assured me that she was a great stylist. When I went for my cut, I was the only customer in the building for nearly the whole time, but the place was still annoyingly loud from the staff yelling and joking around. I told Janet my only two requests: to trim up the back/bottom of my hair so it wasn't all blobby, and not to cut the layer to the side of my face that I was trying to grow out. Janet said she could just trim the layer a bit to blend it in with the rest of my hair. When I gave her permission to do this, I did not realize she would be chopping the layer so it would be even wider and more noticeable. She didn't blend it all, but gave me a pseudo mullety cut that is a bit embarrassing. It didn't look too bad when I walked out of the salon because she had brushed it to the side, but I soon realized that I had a big chunk of hair that was much shorter than the rest, going pretty far back. It's going to take several months to grow out to look like a decent hairstyle again. Also, it became apparent that I was being rushed out because they had moved Janet's previous 1 o'clock to 1:30 to fit me in. At the end of my speedy cut, I noticed the back/bottom of my hair was longer and bulkier than the rest (I had specifically asked for her to trim it up), and I politely asked her to trim it some more. She quickly did so and asked me if I was satisfied without even giving me a mirror or turning my chair around so I could see the back. After asking for a mirror, I noticed it was a little bit better but still thicker than the sides. Janet seemed nice enough, but I will not go back to Moda and this haircut was NOT worth $48 (the price with a 20% off coupon). I'm pretty upset I have jacked up hair for my graduation photos, and I'm out over 50 bucks (with tip). UPDATE: They saw my previous, slightly more scathing review and called my cell. The receptionist left a voicemail explaining that Josh really doesn't work there much anymore and Janet is actually a very good stylist. That's all well and good, but they shouldn't have booked me with Josh if there was a chance they'd have to change my appointment the day before, and they can say Janet is the best stylist in the world but I still don't like my haircut. The receptionist said she wished I had let them know that I wasn't happy. I had! But I was being rushed out for the next appointment, which they had scheduled just 30 minutes after mine. She offered to have me come back so we can make things right, but unless they can make my weird chunk of hair grow back I don't see how. I moved away from New Brunswick after graduation anyway. However, I did change my rating from one star to two because at least they followed up with me and offered to try to fix it, even if it's likely just to increase their rating on Yelp. read more

If you need a quick blow out, this is an ok spot but honestly...I wouldn't go back. While they were super welcoming when I first walked in (offering chocolate & fruit) and I got excited about having a new spot to go to, it seems more like a college salon than a place to go regularly. I went there for a blowout/straighten (a good test for any stylist) and ended up feeling like I was on an episode of "critique my hair". Not really sure how that happened but I know I didn't ask the stylist to tell me her thoughts about my hair or what I needed to change, especially having just gotten it colored 2 weeks prior. Not to mention that there are plenty of different options and a different approach may have come across a little less...abrupt. Ultimately, I wasn't really happy with the turnout of the hair but didn't feel like trying to make it work or spend more time there, so I paid, tipped her and left. Not sure if others feel this way but when you walk into a salon, the stylists should really have their hair done. It's really about first impressions...and these gals didn't have the best hair or instill confidence in their ability to provide solutions for great hair. All in, it wasn't really a pleasant experience...and i feel like they don't really listen to what you want but tell you what they think. And as any female knows, NYE is one of the busiest day for salons since everyone wants to come in and get blow outs, so I was pleasantly surprised when the owner told me to come right in. Since a lot of the stylists had to leave after finishing the clients they were working on when I walked in, the owner volunteered his personal time to blow me out since no one else was available. I could not have been more impressed with the attitude of the salon employees: no one rushed me or made me feel unwelcome, everyone was kind and courteous and I received a beautiful blowout at very short notice. I really appreciated it because the owner could have just told me no and closed the salon, but he went the extra mile for me. Definitely worth visiting, quality place. read more

I used to go to this salon for about 3-4 years. The staff is very talented and does great work. I would get a haircut, highlights and waxing and I was always very pleased with the results across the board. They use Aveda products which is why I gave them a try in the first place. Pricing is standard - definitely more expensive than your typical chain salon (ie Fantastic Sam's) but lower than a high end day spa. The decor inside is warm and inviting - very pleasant. The atmosphere inside is very energetic - for me, excessively so. This is eventually why I stopped going there. Moda is located in the heart of the Rutgers campus and clearly caters to the college age clientele. The staff are all very chatty and gossipy and would always be engaged in some story or drama, yelling across the room to each other over the noise of the hair dryers and music. To me this was somewhat unprofessional behavior but I can definitely see that this could be very interesting and exciting for other people. I am long out of college and have a stressful corporate job and the last thing I needed was to leave my salon appointment after work feeling more strung out out than when I got there. Because they did such good work, I kept going back, but I eventually had enough of that frenetic environment and switched to Boca Salon in North Brunswick a few years ago. This place is great, but definitely expensive. Since I don't get my hair done regularly, it's fine by me stopping by two to three times a year for a trim, blowout, or color. Janet has always worked on my hair and she successfully bleached my jet black hair into a beautiful bright shade of chocolate brown with a hint of gold. The cut was excellent as well, and she recommended that I get some Aveda products to help nourish my hair since well, you know how bleach goes! I know that hairstylists always try to up-sell products that you don't need, but I can say that till date, I still use Aveda products. Henry, the owner, has worked on my mother's hair and she always asks me to take her back. She was happy with the overall experience and will be returning when given the opportunity. Pros: 1) Good vibes and excellent music 2) Sometimes, there is a puppy there 3) The stylists are meticulous 4) Close to New Brunswick train station. It is walking distance. Cons: 1) Parking is awful. I rated Moda hair salon awful because: the first time I went there, Henry (owner) left me at the sink after washing my hair without a towel. After 5 mins, my shirt was soaked, he returned did not apologize. I explained what kind of cut i wanted but he said "dont worry if yu don't like it, it will grow bacK"..very reassuring. there were multitude of interruptions, when it became annoying i asked to come back if he is going to keep walking away to chat with people (on the streets, phone etc.)..Henry replies "dont worry i have been doing this for long time". Second time: Rude (henry and khalil), multiple longg interruptions - no apology or acknolwledgement. did not clean the hair of the floor surrounding the chair, i tip-toed my way into the seat. i'm done with them. If you want an appointment kept, go elsewhere. I walked in to get a cut, was told it would be an hour wait. I told them I was happy to set an appointment for the following day, which they did. I arrived the next day on time, the barber I had set a time with- Henry - was sitting someone down, I was told he would be right with me. After a 25 minute wait he invited me over, I asked him what happened to my appointment, he responded that he double books in case people don't show up. I told him I needed a barber who would respect my time, he told me that he wouldn't do that. So ended my time with fancy hair dressers in New Brunswick. Very odd folks here. read more

The first time I got my hair done here it came out very nice and I was very happy with it. I recently went in again for another haircut and the outcome was not as satisfactory. The women who cut my hair was perfectly friendly, but did not cut my hair anything like the picture that I showed her. My hair is cut way too short and extremely over layered. For $65 I was expecting a much better haircut, now unfortunately I am stuck with a very unfitting haircut until it grows out. read more
