I was in the market for a used iPad and one of the guys I work with had been in contact with Mac Tonic regarding a used laptop. He seemed pleased with their service so I sent Mac Tonic an email to see if they had any iPads. They responded quickly to my online request and had a few options for me. When I visited the store they were a little busy, but I didn't have to wait terribly long. The storefront was very neat and tidy with a high tech look you would expect, but hardly ever see with computer repair shops. I was allowed to fully inspect the devices and made a good decision after considering the advice of the salesperson. They stand behind what they sell which would be worth a few extra dollars, but the price I paid was in line with the likes of craigslist and eBay. Last week I accidentally spilled water on my MacBook Pro keyboard, and in my panic took it to Mac Tonic. Before visiting them, I had taken it to the Technical Help Center on the University of Oregon campus, where I was told the only way I could have a consultation was to pay $100! I declined and raced over to Mac Tonic. I was incredibly impressed with the level of service and knowledge of the Mac Tonic employees! They offered to (for free) open up my computer to see if it was fixable and how they could help me. After opening it up, they were completely honest with me in their answer that it would cost far more than the computer was worth to fix it, and I never once felt pressured to purchase products from them or hire them to fix it! As well, they offered to purchase the parts that were in good condition, and just yesterday I was able to sell them my defunct computer for parts, and received far more compensation than I would have from anywhere else! I would highly recommend Mac Tonic and their associates- they are knowledgeable, honest, and friendly which is very refreshing in a tech store! Easy find, easy parking directly in front of the store. Five stars right there. The staff was super friendly and professional. Computer required a new optical drive the first go-around, and as it turned out, also a new hard drive. They backed up my data and restored it. No data loss. These guys were super duper. I had an older imac that froze following high sierra installation. I tried reinstalling the browser, repairing the hard drive, downloading boots install onto a thumb drive....all the google suggestions, to no avail. It's been an odyssey for both me, my husband (Mark) and Mac Tonic (JONATHAN & AARON)!! Had bought refurbished iMac online (big mistake). husband tried to install new drive (the other had crashed). [The iMac sure is tricky with a very small working area inside!] Mark accidentally broke data display cable. AND, I brought the wrong hard drive...so anyway if Mark had been able to install we'd have eventually blown up the computer because the heat sink (or thermostat) was incompatible. The other issue was distance. We live on the coast, about a 2 1/2 hour drive each way. Mac Tonic tried everything, got new drive, kept tweaking away at this puzzle for about 4-5 weeks then a few more weeks because other stuff went wrong with the first refurbished computer they sold us (at a very reasonable [honestly, at a LOW PRICE]), without huge charges for labor! Then had to replace that one, on this past Monday, then yesterday, Tuesday (9/16/14), we had to bring that one back. YESTERDAY'S REPLACEMENT WORKED!!! YEAH!!. THEY WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND THE WHOLE WAY. And, (I feel bad) but they sorta gave away the store... If they only knew we were really ready to pay more... While my mother in law was visiting she ran into computer problems on her Apple laptop. Coming from a PC family I had no idea how to fix her issues. I have a mid-2010 iMac that was progressively slowing down to the point where I was having trouble doing anything - surfing the Web, using my graphic design software, basically I'd get the spinning beachball with every click. Colin worked on diagnosing the problem, and he believed it was an older, slower CPU - my machine just couldn't keep up with the times. His suggestion was to replace my old hard drive with an SSD. I said go ahead, and then I did some homework. Apparently, this is a really good solution to computers that have slowed down with age. I retrieved my upgraded machine today, and, WOW - I am absolutely amazed and thrilled at the change in my sluggish old Mac. Windows are popping up almost instantly, and I haven't seen the beach ball yet. I worked in Photoshop today, and everything just worked - no sluggishness at all. I had my drive not communicating with my laptop. Turns out it needed a new drive so he replaced it and my computer works great now. Turns out a lost a lot of photos but he moved over everything else. A week later I go back in there and hand him the modem and a drive ask him if he can try again this time more prepared on my end. He was able to magically get the modem to work just long enough to get all my information off my computer! Could not be more stoked to have all my photos and memories back. I called and was told if I dropped off a computer for evaluation for purchase (I.e. they buy my old Mac) I'd only have to leave it "overnight". I left my Mac laptop, called them in 3 (business, or 5 normal) days after hearing nothing , was told they'd gotten busy and I would hear right away. A week and a half later, I went in and asked. I was told my computer would be worth 75$ and needed a new battery. Ok, you have a profit margin, it's old, ok. When I come to pick it up a week later, I'm told "well the chargers are hard to keep track of. Here's a newer one." I was pissed but kept quiet. The associate didn't even ask me for ID to verify that my computer I picked up was mine (it still had personal info). To add insult to injury, after some time had passed, (tonight) I brought out the old Mac to plug in. The "new" cord is missing the extension, it is at most 1/2 as long as the old one. I really wanted to like this place, they were very friendly and did a great job fixing my computer. The only problem was that it took them over a month to do it! They were swamped with orders and I understand why it took so long, but it's really tough to go a month without your computer during the middle of school over sonething that could have been fixed very quickly elsewhere. I would have taken it somewhere else if I had known but they told me it would only take 1-2 weeks. They need more people working there if they have that many computers to fix. The second problem is that after receiving my laptop and taking it home I find out they didn't screw the bottom case back together! So I'll have to take it back to get that fixed, adding another hassle to my already long process of getting my computer fixed. They are very friendly and helpful, and they fixed my computer for relatively cheap. Other than the long wait and extra hassle of making another return trip, it's a very good mac repair store. Just don't expect to get your computer back very quickly. I will probably choose to go somewhere else next time. read more
