Our group decided they wanted to try a local pub while we were in Victoria for our last night of the cruise. After a quick search on Yelp we settled on The Churchill so they could try several different local beers. I opted for the featured cocktail of the month Into The Wild with blackberry gin, blueberry liqueur, honey, lemon & orange bitters. I thought it was really good, smooth but potent. When visiting Canada, I thought it was mandatory to get the Poutine - Beer battered fries, squeaky cheese curds, homemade beef gravy. Very filling and did not disappoint. The rest of the family liked their choices (Nashville Hot Grilled Chicken Burgers, Pulled Jackfruit Bun) as well. We sat in a large booth instead of at the bar like most of the regulars and locals. I am giving the overall bar a 5! It's a super fun bar located right off the major street in Victoria. I was visiting for only 4 short hours. We wanted to grab a beer and head back to the boat. The atmosphere is super fun. We were greeted right away and I was overwhelmed with the beer list. The server let me try a few. I don't think she heard me because it was a little loud. I ended up getting a beer I wasn't a fan of. I'm not one to send things back so I drank what I had. 1 star for the beer I had. This place has MANY drinks to try from. I didn't see a food menu. They might have one. I also didn't see a physical menu, it was scanned from the bar. Still recommend going here! read more

Instant love connection here! This place definitely had my type of vibe and an amazing list of beers on tap to boot. Dimly lit, laid back, and almost goth-y style and decor. I sat the long wooden bar and could not resist trying a pint of a raspberry mango coconut sour. I was only in the area for a few hours as it was the last port stop for the cruise I was on. I sat there listening to the great music, sipping my beer, and reading on my Kindle. Quite a few booths, but all full on a Saturday night. Not too loud and overwhelming either. Went there twice this year. The first time I went there with friends around 8:45pm on a Thursday with friends for food, but they said they already had closed the kitchen. We were surprised and disappointed. There was NO mentions online of the kitchen closing thus early. We already had drinks, mine wasn't that great, strong with alcohol, but it also had cucumber in it that weren't fresh....mushy with a spoiled after taste. The service was barely okay. The waitress did not seemed to care that much about her job and served us as if we were an inconvenient...until it was time for us to pay and tip her... The second time I went there, we were able to order food. The food was alright, but pricey for the portions that you get. We had some whisky, I'm no whisky/scotch drinker, but my friends says they had a nice list. The waiter was very helpful and plaisant. He knew his job well and gave great suggestions for food and drinks! I will have to say, the place wasn't the cleanest, it wasn't super busy and the tables were a but sticky. The plexiglass at our table was smudge as if cleaned with a greasy cloth. I was a disappointed with the ambiance, the place has great potential with the long bar, dim lights and the great display of all the bottles of spirit. But then you hear happy punk rock/ska music and you feel like your sipping scotch has turned into a $2 beer that should be served with slice of pizza at the same price. read more

This place is terrible. Literally just walked in with a group of 5, on a very slow day. The bar was mostly empty, with the exception of two pockets of people at each far end of the bar. There were TWO bartenders, one per group. So we grabbed a seat in the middle empty section. 15 minutes goes by, while the two servers continued to talk to their "peeps," occasionally making eye contact with us like we were two-headed beasts from mars. After zero attention, we all stood up confused, and proceeded to walk out. At that point, 15 minutes in, the male server appeared to gain some form of consciousness and slowly walked our way as we were leaving. I gave him a double thumbs up and we all left. Eff this place. One star is too many. The owner should fire the two servers "working" this place. If we did our jobs the way these two did, we'd all be out of work. read more

Went in the middle of the day on a weekday and found that we got the entire place to ourselves. We decided to try a couple drink and the one that stood out to me the most was their impeachment#2. This place would probably rate a 5 if it could figure out what it wants to be. The sign, menu and bartenders say it's a hipster spot. The decor (other than the 2 random sets of antlers) says it's a standard tourist bar. Really, I think the place tries too hard to be a cool spot in a tourist oasis. Turning all your flat screens to black and white mode whilst showing a National Lampoons movie does not equate to coolness. Fortunately, the beer and whiskey selection saves this place. Outside of my fave spot back in Baltimore, I'd be hard pressed to tell of a better selection of local taps. Out of 30 or so taps, there are probably 20 or so local beers along with who knows how many bottles/cans. The scotch and whiskey selection is also rather impressive. On a quick stop in Victoria we wandered into this place and fell in love. The menus of "bites" is diverse enough to include a little snack and a full meal. Yes, it is attached to a hotel. HOWEVER, it was recommended to us by a native -- and he was absolutely spot-on. Genuinely popular with the locals, and a great energy: friendly staff and patrons, pleasant atmosphere, EXCELLENT drinks. I had come to the end of my "yes I'll drink beer because that's what one DOES." I'm not really a huge fan of beer. So we moved to the drinks menu: good choice. I had a raspberry mojito, spouse had a maple Old Fashioned. Both were excellent; spouse thought they were "generous" with the whiskey, but that was ok, we were on foot and well w/in walking range of our hotel. Remember, friends: Canada is a LOT less tolerant of DUI than the US (which I think is a very good thing.) The food was good, not pegging-the-meter outstanding, but definitely respectable. We had the cod tacos, which were very good, and the pierogies.. which may be something one acquires a taste for. Quite edible, but I wouldn't order them again. The bartenders were attentive, drinks tasted great, and service was quick! 3 stars due to the host and hostess in the front. Not very welcoming and looked as though they were being bothered when customers walked in the door. There was a 20 minute wait when we got to the restaurant, which was not a problem, so we asked if we can just grab a drink at the bar while we wait for our table and they just stared at us as if we were aliens. LOVED this bar! Totally a "locals" place. It's surprisingly attached to a hotel, but you'd never really sense that until you need to use the restroom, which is located in the lobby. Our server was fantastic - she was super friendly, helpful, attentive and sweet. Their craft beer list is awesome and we got to try multiple local, craft beers from the menu. Food is also spot-on. We got a variety of small bites to share, and loved everything that came to our table, especially the fish tacos and charcuterie plate! Stopped in for some beers and a meal when our cruise ship docked in Victoria. It was a Saturday night with 3 ships in port so we were lucky to snag the last table. Waitress was super friendly and helpful and prices seemed reasonable at about 45 CAD plus tip for our order. We ordered some local beers and a couple burgers. My 9% beer came in the same size glass as my husband's 5.5%er. I got the beef and my husband the lamb burger. Both were delicious, if a little messy to eat. My beef burger didn't have a hint of pink so I was surprised at how juicy and flavorful (and not dry) it was, it hit the spot. Loved the kettle chips with chipotle mayo as my side. My girlfriend and I were visiting from Seattle on Valentine's Day weekend. We'd managed to get a few days off, and, after walking up and down Government Street, we walked into the Churchill. The pulled pork poutine was fantastic, the craft beer list was massive and well catered, the service, on a very busy Saturday evening, was sublime, and the server was knowledgeable on beer, scotch, cocktails, you name it. And the prices were perfect (granted, we came from Seattle, but still) It was so good that we came the next evening and had the poutine again... because... yum. read more

I became a fan of The Churchill the second I walked in the doors. This is my kind of pub: cozy yet vibrant, energictic without being loud, well decorated, great beer selection? What's not to love?? When it comes to seating, The Chuchill offers both cozy booths and a long, comfortable bar area. Seating is pretty limited so get here early if you don't want to be standing. The service at both the bar and the table was attentive and helpful. The staff here know their products so don't hesitate to ask them for help deciphering the menu. The long list can be a bit overwhelming. I like how the beer list heavily favours local and other BC breweries. When you live in a province that makes great beer, why look much further? Their food menu also looks intriguing but I haven't had the chance to try it yet. Next time! read more

This place is great; my kinda place. Came here for beers and got exactly what I was looking for. A GIANT variety of beers on tap of all shapes and sizes. The layout was great too. My spouse is a beer connoisseur and the bartenders have made great recommendations every time we've been in. I'm a tequila loyalist and the Cheeky Gonzalez is the best cocktail I've had: tequila blanco, jalapeño juice, lime juice, and triple sec. It's tangy and spicy, which is my favorite flavor combo. I've never seen such a gargantuan selection of beer. Met up with a friend here last night after work. He'd been there a few times, but I never had. However, I had been to the Garrick's Head, located in the adjoining building (and much easier to spot). Both pubs have a beautifully rustic atmosphere, boasting hardwood, log cabin-esque furniture, and elk skulls mounted on the walls. The tap behind the bar went on forever! I jokingly suggested that we make a game out of trying every type of beer on the menu,,,which would probably take at least a year. I was thrilled to find, however, that they carry Merridale Cider (my fave!) Theirs is a 6.5%, cranberry-flavored version...delicious!!. If you love beer, and consider yourself the adventurous type....definitely give this place a try. read more
