I will say the food was very very good. But the male waiters were extremely creepy and continuously made uncomfortable comments (I am a solo young female traveler). Every single one of the waiters came up to me individually throughout the night to ask my name with very off putting smiles. Asking me why I'm alone, when I'm leaving Rome, and talked about them wanting me as a girlfriend??? There was so much more but that was the general gist of it. Maccheroni's vibe was cool. We say outside and got to watch people walking by which was nice. They squeeze tables right next to each other, but I found this is common in Italy. We got the lasagna and a spicy vodka pasta. The spicy vodka was nothing special. The lasagna on the other hand was spectacular. The Parmesan cheese and sauce and meat all paired together so well. We were absolutely blown away. As we kept eating we realized that the inside was cold. It was warm around the edge l, but the inside was literally cold and undercooked. We were so sad and loved it so much that we kept eating it. This was the worst thing we could have done because 2 hours later our stomachs both hurt so bad my boyfriend ended up taking a tums pill to ease the pain. After many meals of hunting for good pasta, Maccheroni finally delivered! Their Pasta Amatriciana was divine (I hate goat cheese and ordered it cheese-less)!! If you want the one place that I recommend for pasta, Maccheroni is THE PASTA place. I was honestly disappointed with most of Rome's pasta because most restaurants serve bland food (I'm a believer that both the sauce and the proteins should enhance one another). This has been gaining some traction with "influencers" who know nothing about Roman culinary traditions. I also think the restaurant may have recently made some changes compared to a Condé Nast recommendation and what some of the reviews below say. Regardless - if you only have a few meals in Rome and are searching for authentic, high-quality food, I would look elsewhere. If you love tourist traps (or restaurants that feel a bit like a tourist trap) this is the place for you. I was disappointed that they did not make all the pasta (including the namesake maccheroni!) in house. We started with the mozzarella and prosciutto. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't good. It was similar in quality to the most basic you could get in the United States - certainly a disappointment while in Rome. The caccio e peppe and carbona were also disappointing. The carbonara was lumpy, indicating the sauce was a bit overcooked, and the rich flavors I'd typically expect were not present. The caccio e peppe was better, but still just average. It seemed very watered down, lacking the full-bodied black pepper and pecorino flavor you'd expect. The experience was also very slow - something typical of a Roman dinner, but very much disappointing given the overall quality. You can find much better while in Rome. read more

Our first option on Yelp for lunch was closed... we walked around but didn't like the other choices when we stumbled upon Maccheroni. We reviewed the menu and decided to wing it. I looked at the Yelp reviews once seated and was grateful it had 3.5-4 stars. Ordered the fettuccini w/ ragu sauce and the Cacio e Pepe. The menu said that only 2-3 pastas were made from scratch including the spaghetti and fettuccini. We decided to try both pasta dishes which were made "in house". Maccheroni really wasn't very good. I'd read some great reviews across a few platforms, and overall it looked like a good place for a solid bowl of pasta. It turned out to be a bummer and a miss. Service: very slow, agitated and really only focused on Americans who looked like they would tip (and they did). We had to call our waiter over for everything we needed, from initial order, to checking on our pasta after 40 minutes, to the check after 70 minutes. Food: we had the buffalo mozzarella with truffle, Roman artichoke, ravioli with zucchini flowers, and fettuccini bolognese. The mozzarella was fine. The artichoke was very tough and by far the worst version of this we've had in Rome. Both of the pastas were home made and well cooked. The bolognese sauce was very mild, it needed another hour or so to brew. The sauce on the ravioli was fine. As another reviewer mentioned, at the end of the meal our waiter said that service wasn't included. He'd barely looked at us all night, and when he did it was clear he was sizing us up for tips rather than making sure we had what we needed. Had dinner last night at Maccheroni. At first the hostess couldn't find our reservation. She found it written on the bottom of the page. The bread was hard and dry. I ordered the cheese Ravioli and it was tasty. My husband liked his Chicken cacciatore. At the end of our meal the waiter came to my husband and bent down and said "Gratuity is not included, you need to leave me a tip" I found that to be extremely rude. I know this is something that happens to American tourists. We didn't experience this at any of the other restaurants in the area. A bit bummed. Maccheroni was a solid recommendation across several respectable travel blogs and websites. We went for lunch on a Thursday. It was crowded but we were seated quickly. It took at least 20 minutes before we had someone wait on us. No issues with that due to how busy they were. The food was okay. Not as good as I expected given the ratings for the restaurant. Mixed thoughts on this one. The starter (caprese) and dessert (tiramisu) were both very good, but I'll be honest in saying the Cacio e Pepe wasn't the best one I've had. I also got the impression they were trying to get me out of there so they could bring in new customers, which is fair, but a bit unusual because it seems in Italy meals can last quite a long time. We really enjoyed this traditional Italian restaurant. Just a couple blocks walk from the Pantheon and totally worth it to get away from the tourist trap restaurants. The pasta was on point. We also really enjoyed the olive oil and bread- I swear it was the best balsamic and olive oil I've tasted. It was almost sweet. The buffalo mozzarella was a hard pass for our whole group: either it had gone sour, or this is it's natural taste, but these 3 Americans found it soured and didn't eat it past a taste. The spaghetti tossed in herbs and olive oil was divine. And we enjoyed the traditional tasting meatballs and sauce. Be prepared that they don't serve them together! And tomato sauce is all about the tomato. All around good food. The service was dependable, albeit not particularly friendly. I'll give them a pass though as it had started raining when we stopped for a late lunch and apparently so did everyone else as there wasn't a single empty table. This place came highly recommended by my aunt and uncle who go to Italy every year. We wanted some great authentic Italian food for dinner. We walked in and were greeted quickly and were taken downstairs. It really gave it the perfect date night ambiance that we were hoping for in Italy. One of my favorite restaurants in Rome! Start with the pecorino drizzled with honey. It's served on a bed of arugula. Great start to the meal. Then try the salami plate. It's a wonderful assortment of cured meats. My sister had the cannelloni and loved it! It came in a small casserole and had plenty of sauce. I had a small taste and enjoyed it. I think I actually liked it better than the carbonara I ordered. The pasta was cooked perfectly. But, the sauce was too salty and there wasn't enough. The bread was crusty and delicious! We were able to sit outside on a perfect night with clear skies, 75 degree temperature with a slight breeze. The restaurant is in a small plaza that's vibrant and filled with great energy. Outdoor seating is more plentiful than indoor. Service is attentive and quite responsive. I'll return on my next trip to Rome. read more

Molto Italiano! From the kitchen being dead center of the restaurant, all enclosed in glass, with everyone yelling in Italian, this place rocked. From the bustling service and hipster waiters (everyone's heavily tatted and bearded), yummy men and pasta! AMORE! Their aprons were badass, I don't think I got a pic :-((( The pasta was delicious! Everyone here says try the truffle pasta but I chose the Gnocchi with Gargonzola and Pear. Holy S^*&! It was incredible. I was so happy with it that it was my fave meal in Rome so far! I wasn't stoked about the two wine choices but that's likely my lack of educated Italian. I don't usually like prosciutto, but their ham and melon here in Roma must be a staple. You know you're getting great Italian food when you're the only one speaking English in the returning. I don't know where to begin. The service was prompt and courteous. Decent place for lunch with plenty of tables. Service is probably on the less friendly side. The guy got our order wrong and then he got pretty wordy with us afterward. Well at least that's what it sounds like to me since he said it in Italian. To be fair, I think he is new and still on training. We ordered the fettuccine with black truffle to share and it was delicious. I'm glad we shared the dish because Italian food is such a one note flavor and the truffle is pretty strong. Not the best I had in Rome, but still so good. I had the truffle pasta and my husband had the ravioli. Go with the ravioli - it was great! The truffle spaghetti was just a tad too bland for me. They had plenty of tables and we got there right around opening time. However, it started to fill up pretty quickly after. The service was one of the better ones I experienced. We were visiting Rome for a quick trip when we stumbled upon this place, and we are sooooo glad that we did. It was the ultimate Italian dinner experience. The waiter was amazing and informative. They brought me the wrong meal, contended that it was what I ordered before eventually conceding they got it wrong and replaced it without ever apologizing.
