TLDR - amazing in the past, some bumps during the pandemic, looking better now We came from the Mach location in San Ramon where our kids learned from the amazing Master Phil. He was truly gifted with kids. So nurturing and fun, yet taught them values, discipline, technique. The pandemic hit and everything moved to zoom. It was tough. My kids really missed in person instruction. The Mach staff did a good job of staying enthusiastic. Then when things reopened we moved our kids to this Pleasanton Mach location. The teacher was a woman whom they brought from Korea and she, while very skilled and had great accolades, was NOT good for my kids. They dealt with it, but honestly she was not good at engaging the students, no fun and games, no effort in getting to know the kids like the other staff are so gifted at (Master Phil, Master Sung). THEN... a couple months ago they brought Master Shin from Korea to the dojang and WOW... my kids love him. He is skilled AND engaging. It's early but we have high hopes. My kids are happy again and they loved going to TKD again. Props to the Mach staff for listening to the feedback and for making changes. My son likes the class very much. He was so excited after the first trail class and even stay outside watching two more upper level classes. Although He still has three trail classes, he decided to enroll after yesterday's. He had a warm welcome and interaction with the master since he came in. It helped him a lot to merge himself into the class. He feels good about the whole class and thankful for the masters who helped him to fit in the class, understand the situation and standing besides him gave him the company and telling him what should do so that he feels relaxed, confidence and playful. We had been looking for a martial arts program for our 8 year old but it was so hard to assess - so when our friends told us about Mach's try it out for a month program we decided to give it a try. So glad we did - he and his friends love it and we love the way all the instructors interact with the kids. There is a good mixture of training, instruction, and mental discipline. The kids really respond well to Master Sung - he has a way of sounding strict, serious, and keeping it fun all at the same time. Haha have never heard our son say "Yes SIR" with so much gusto and joy before. After about five sessions we decided to commit to three months. They have a program where the longer you commit the bigger the discount. And in case you miss a session, they also have a nice class makeup policy. Mach Martial Arts has been an amazing experience for my daughter, Riley. I remember her first day in the little tiger class 2 years ago. She was a nervous 6 year old, yet super excited to learn martial arts with kids of similar age. One year Master Sungwoo told the students about his family tradition for Mother's Day, which was to show respect to mothers in his family by washing their feet. This is the only class that my 6 year old does not need to be reminded about! My son is a highly energetic being and keeping him tamed and contained inside the house is a torture for him. So we thought why not try some martial arts class. We did have him try jui-jitsu but that did not work. He struggled a lot in the trial class and the class did not seem to be very focused. After touring a few, we decided on Mach Martial Arts. Its located at a very commutable distance and seemed like a better place than the others. Well, I was right! The instructors are very passionate about teaching and do pay extreme attention to each and every student that comes in their class. My son has been coming here for a year and earned his fifth belt today. He also teaches his little 3 yr sister and when the time comes, I will enroll her too. But for now, even during the COVID, the masters have been having daily zoom training sessions and my son has been attending each one of them. I have heard so many positive comments about this studio that when our little guy's friend ask to try it out (30 day free trial), we said why not. We sure are glad that we did... In the earlier afternoon class (smaller class than the even classes), our boys fully take advantage of a structured class of kicking, punching, endurance (lots of running and jumping), competitiveness (elimination games), discipline and respect. During our trial period, we have seen 3 master teachers and numerous student teachers (assisting younger and newer kids). Master teachers are full of energy and personality. They try to give each one of the students personal attention by learn their names and correcting each one's movements. My child leaves every class looking happy and very sweaty. And, I see the same look on other students as well. This is my initial review based on the first month of trying Mach, which is our second dojo to try. My 7 year old daughter is enthusiastic to attend class and likes the discipline and challenge. Don't let the word discipline dissuade you. Master Chris knows how to control a large class, injecting learning, and keeping the group engaged. I work with Grandmaster Bae and he gives Mach a real good rating even though they do not attend his Tournaments. My background includes 7 years of training in Shaolin Kempo Karate, including instruction, so I have a good idea of the process and probably more of a critic since we used to cross dojo compete with TKD. I like how other advanced belts help the beginners at Mach, but it bothers me how many black belts there are that really do not hold the rank. It is important to find a style that fits you both physically and mentally with the latter being just as important in and out of class. I enjoy that the girls tend to have better form and stance which supports more effective action. This is really good for kids. I will update as we progress. read more
