Cottrell Pier is a private (members only) beach on Jamestown. I have been going here for 33 years…read morenow (yes I just gave away my age) and have seen the place grow. I use to know all of the people that went but recently there have been a few new members. The pier itself has been updated, there is a new float to swim to and there is a nice wood loggia type building on the sand. This is perfect for parties and bbqs.

There's plenty of opportunities to climb/hike up trails to get even sicker views. There's also huge rocks you can take a seat and relax on, and everyone we passed was so friendly -- but we only passed a few people every once in a while. The best part? It's covered in the coooolest graffiti on the inside and outside of cement tunnels and abandoned structures that you can walk through. I've never seen anything like it! As you drive in, there…read moreare a few parking lots located on the right side of the road....there are about 3-4, so if the first ones are full, keep driving and hopefully you can find a spot in the farther ones. It does not matter if you park in the farther lots, you can still walk around the edge of the park and enjoy the nice ocean views and rocky scenery. There are areas for picnics, there is a small museum and there's the lighthouse as well. We have come many times and we have seen many people taking pictures with the beautiful background for weddings, quinceañeras, engagements, graduation, and more. Free parking, free to get in.

The lighthouse museum was open as was their little one room aquarium. We picniced in the lawn and as with all State parks it's "carry-in, carry out" so be sure you bring your own trash bags. Same for your pup. Furry friends are welcime as long as you carry their droppings out. Four parking areas are available at no cost. A number of trails dot the area. Most of the area is uneven grass and dirt paths although there are handicapped spots closest to the lighthouse and a paved path leading in that direction. The lighthouse museum is not wheel chair accessible. Composting toilet buildings are located in a field between parking and lighthouse. These are water free and have hand sanitizer available. If you are a forager this location may interest you. Be sure you have a license to enjoy fishing off the rocks.

Scarborough is a State Beach with lifeguards until 6 pm. The grandchildren over the years enjoy making sand castles, jumping the waves, and walking along the shoreline. The surf here is more gentle than nearby Narragansett Beach. Scarborough State Beach with its large pavilion and expanded beach area, with the nearby Scarborough South, offers a wide range of beach related activities. People of all ages can find activities of interest from sun bathing on Scarborough's sandy beach, and people watching on its boardwalk to picnicking under shaded shelters, and saltwater bathing in one of Rhode Island's most popular spots.

The fact it's small and in the middle of a neighborhood full of mansions made me believe I'd never step foot on this premisses. $20 to park the car, however, there was no additional entrance charge. A small lot, but nowhere near full when we arrived at 11:30 one Thursday morning. I really like this beach and feel it's worth both the drive and price for the following reasons: It has just the right amount of people, neither too crowded nor completely isolated. Rocks not far from the shore were a nice change in scenery, along with the historic Newport mansions off in the near distance. There's a cute snack shack to grab lunch or a little bite to eat as well. A trailer within the lot has a men's and women's bathroom. Two stalls in the ladies room. Clean and just right for this beach. Swimming wise, there weren't many waves. I was also surprised as to how much seaweed floated around. But, I still enjoyed being in the water nonetheless. I also love the fact I'm in Newport. Everyone makes their way to Narragansett Beach or Easton's. The traffic to either place is horrendous, never mind finding a spot to park. Driving in circles for 20 minutes is a given. But not here. It's nice to know there's a 'secret' beach not only in such a high class town, but also close to the heart of downtown Newport as well. The exclusivity Gooseberry beach offers the everyday person is exciting. It's truly a hidden gem, and definitely worth a visit.

We came in the winter so there was a lot of snow on the ground, but it was still so beautiful and serene. I imagine it's just gorgeous in the summer.
