I must say, I am well traveled, but I don't do many car road trips. On this particular road trip, I found myself looking for breakfast in South Carolina, during the heat wave that marked America's 250th birthday. We found Mac's Diner here on Yelp thanks to the smashing reviews. We knew we would add ten miles or so each way but we decided to go have a try. Oh, man - this is one of the best diners I have eaten at in a long time. The place was clean and charmingly decorated, the server Michelle (I think) was fabulous. Coffee was decent, but of acceptable quality (I am a coffee snoberoo). I ordered a bacon and cheese omelet and my wife ordered eggs and corned beef hash. We also heard from the server that the biscuits and gravy were homemade, so we got that as a side. I got french fries with my omelet and they were perfect. Omelet was well cooked and stuffed with crispy bacon and cheese. I was blown away by the corned beef hash. When we get hash, we like it crispy. This hash was - as requested - brutally incinerated with no mercy. It was one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten in a diner. OMG. Perfection. The biscuits and gravy were also amazing. I am also a big fan of this dish and I can tell you that sausage gravy should not be WHITE - this gravy at Mac's was brown and rich and filled with an abundance of sausage bits. It was absolutely heavenly. Take the 30 minute detour if you are coming up or down i-95 in South Carolina - you will NOT be disappointed. Hope we come back some day. read more

Cute little diner in a small southern town. We would come back. My first impressions: Small, cozy, friendly, bright and clean. My friend had been here several times over the years and suggested we have lunch here. We popped in on a Tuesday early afternoon. The menu offers typical southern fare, and a solid breakfast selection. Nothing super-extraordinary, and everything familiar. Something for everyone in the family. My friend ordered the burger all-in, and I opted for a buffalo chicken wrap. My friend said that the burger was great, but that the home cut potato discs needed to be drained off a little more (they were very greasy). My wrap had real chicken breast, super fresh, lettuce, and tomatoes, but barely any shredded cheese and zero buffalo sauce for that matter. One of the ladies behind the counter, noticed my questioning facial expression, and immediately asked me if I needed something, and kindly brought me a little cup of sauce. I was amazed that they had regular hot tea (being in the south, tea usually means sweet tea, which I'm not a fan of). Our lovely server was on top of our beverages and brought everything so quickly and with a smile! This place was so clean, from the common dining areas to the bathroom! Gotta love that. Unfortunately this place is not wheelchair friendly (tiny bathroom, even difficult for able-bodied and larger-bodied persons to navigate). Also, sides are extra. My wrap was $10.50... surprising that this doesn't include at least a handful of potato chips or fries. Biggest plus? The sweetest staff and great vibes. Mac's Diner is exactly what a proper Southern diner should be--unpretentious, friendly, and full of flavor. It describes itself as an "easygoing spot offering a menu of breakfast and comfort-food classics," and it delivers on that promise completely. I had the daily special: a fried pork chop with red rice and fried okra. Every bite was perfect--crisp, seasoned just right, and full of that old-school Southern comfort you can't fake. The red rice was deeply flavorful, the okra was golden and crunchy, and the pork chop was everything you hope for when you see it on a chalkboard special. Inside, it's a cozy, classic diner setup with a counter lined with barstools and a few booths nearby, then an adjoining dining room with plenty of tables for larger groups. The big daily specials board is a nice touch and adds to the hometown feel. They serve breakfast and lunch only, closing at 2:30 p.m., and from what I saw, breakfast must be worth the early trip. One of my dining partners ordered a hamburger--it looked phenomenal, thick and juicy, and he was more than happy with it. I also noticed a small dessert selection, including red velvet cake, which fit the Southern theme perfectly. Service was excellent--our server was prompt, polite, and attentive, never letting our glasses dip below half full. On the way out, we met the owner, a very pleasant lady who clearly takes pride in the place. Mac's Diner has a large, free parking lot and an atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home. I highly recommend it to anyone passing through Holly Hill or anywhere nearby. If I lived closer, I'd be there for breakfast regularly. This is Southern comfort done right. read more

Riding along thinking about lunch and this place showed up in a no stoplight town. Went by and had to turn around and go back because we were hungry going on hangry and not a lot of options to eat had made an appearance so far. It was busy and noisy but the food was delicious. Down home comfort food. Service was great. Prices were good too. Didn't get too much of the "you ain't from around here are ya" feeling. Everybody was too busy enjoying their food and talking. There is a counter with stools when you enter and a cozy dining room to the left. Good sized parking lot that was pretty full when we stopped. Overall it was a great place to stop for lunch. read more

The traditional American breakfast fare and lunch options are all freshly made and very tasty. Their hours are limited so check em out and make a plan to drop in for some great food made by wonderful people. We never miss the chance when visiting in Holly Hill. read more

First time visiting for breakfast! Very cozy and relaxing atmosphere. Staff and service were excellent. I had a pancake with eggs and bacon. The pancake was huge but thin. I am almost positive it is cornmeal based. My bf got biscuits and gravy. He wasn't happy to receive the one biscuit but he said the gravy was awesome. We will be back! read more

Wow!! The other RAVE reviews don't do this place justice! Yes, it's a little homie diner where the staff know most customers by name! They also have a bunch of kitch signs and memorabilia from times long gone by.. .Elvis, The Beatles, JohnnyCash. And were playing soul music from the 70's & 80's to get you in the groove! The food selections were amazing and we both ordered Buiscits & Gravy, which was so delicious! The sausage gravy was so tasty! Like my Momma used to make! Mmmm...Mmmm! I also ordered a small side of Shrimp & Grits. I had never seen that on a breakfast menu before! It wasn't the 'Cajun Style' I'm used to, but it had crispy bacon and Kilbasa slices on it! It came with a mild white sauce that was very complimentary. DH ordered a Grits Bowl, and I can only describe it as 'loaded grits'! We've never had anything like it and it was FANTASTIC!! Onions, peppers, cheese, 2 eggs, and choice of ham, bacon or sausage. DH ordered the sausage and it was so nice and well-done crispy! Absolutely YUMMY! And then there was the service! Emily and Lisa took great care of us and they made sure the coffee cups were never empty and we had everything we needed. I guess they could tell that we're from out of town and they made our stop delightful! Thanks, gals! If we are ever in this neck of the woods again, you best believe we're coming back for seconds! We'll, 3rds, actually. We departed with enough leftovers for another filling meal for both of us! You won't be disappointed in the portion sizes, that's for sure! Went in to get a to go meal, was sitting at the bar alone, I asked for a menu for the order. 10 minutes later 4 folks came in after me got a drink and menus before me. So I just left. Not going back, apparently they are doing good enough and don't want new business. read more

We stopped here for lunch and glad that we did! I had their breakfast hamburger (fried egg, bacon, and cheese and the fixings). All their hamburger are freshly made patties. All their fries are hand-cut. Our waitress was very attentive and kept our drinks filled. We will definitely go back again! read more

You better bring your sarcasm because she's pretty sassy, but she won't forget your name and you'll be leaving wanting more banter...
