I have received nothing but superior service on my last few visits to Macy's Capitola. The sales associates in the women's Impulse Clothing Department really go above and beyond and deliver top tier service. On my last three visits this year the sales associates all took their time to make me feel like a valued customer/cardholder. The sales team meetings seem to be paying off. I heard other customers very pleased with their shopping experience. Yesterday the ladies in the Impulse Department did an exceptional job. I couldn't have been more pleased with everything. One sales associate helped me try to find my desired size by running an item locator search and even pored through several rounders trying to help him find one. The sales associate at the cash wrap produced an additional Macy's coupon for me to use. Even though I had my own Macy's rewards coupon, my coupon was only good on sale and clearance items. I had a few tops that were regular price and she was able to help me reap additional savings, which makes me very happy. On my last three or four visits, I've had similar personalized experiences. The front-line employees always make me feel important and welcome. Fashions and merchandise are always on trend and displays are always neat and orderly. I've lived in this area all my life and shopped at Macy's many many times, that ends today. Today I Had the worst experience of racial profiling I've ever experienced in a retail store, maybe because being Sunday I'm not dressed in professional attire, who knows. One week before Christmas I was at Valley Fair and stopped by Macy's to pick up a cologne for my Christmas dinner party. The customer service there at Valley Fair was outstanding, and the Sales person took his time to show me what their best sellers were. I couldn't decide between Bleu by Chanel or my all time favorite LaCoste. The sales clerk advised that I buy them both and assured me they had a very flexible and customer oriented return policy. Today I decided to head into Macy's and return the Chanel cologne. I was going to drive back to Valley Fair to do my return, but my daughter who used to work at Macy's in Capitola assured me the staff was way more professional and cordial here in Capitola. I Immediately noticed the stair down from the only clerk working the counter at the fragrances department. Then instead of offering assistance directly at me with a smile since I had been waiting and was my turn, he says out loud "does anyone here need any help with fragrances". I felt disrespected and very upset. Why wouldn't he ask me directly? Am I invisible? Or just wanted to be condescending? I explained I had purchased two colognes and I had decided to keep the Lacoste and return the channel. The clerk said there was nothing he could do because I had forgotten the receipt. By the way, I did tell him if I could at least get store credit, he looked at me with a smirk and said "sorry I can't even give you store credit" I said come I'll find my receipt, which by the way had never been an issue. I then went across the department to ask for some tshirts in my size, while there, the fragrances clerk took the time to call the associate who was politely assisting me to tell him not to return the cologne. Which had never crossed my mind being a t-shirt department. I felt humiliated and went up to him and got his name and his managers name, because this type off behavior is not what I know Macy's is about. This review is for the COMPLIMENTARY facial service that Shiseido offers. This is more of a "Shiseido" review than a Macy's review. A few weeks ago my daughter and I were shopping at the Chanel makeup counter which is connected to the Shiseido counter and a sales consultant invited us to come back and get a complimentary facial. At the time I wasn't very serious about coming back but agreed on a time to come back a few weeks later anyway. I have never done anything like this before at the mall. What I was expecting was a product overview and maybe get some foundation shade matching done by a high pressure makeup pusher. What happened instead blew me away! The facial was way above and beyond what I was expecting. What a nice way to treat oneself. The consultant has you lie back on a reclining chair, gently removes your makeup, MASSAGES your face, MASSAGES YOUR FACE, and does a number of procedures based on what your skin needs are. Do you feel dry? Get a moisturizing mask. Does your skin look dull? Get a brightening mask. Meanwhile, while your face is masking, the Shiseido consultant will massage your hands and arms. Unbelievably amazing customer service. If you are in Capitola ask to see Teresa. She is a licensed aesthetician with great massage technique. She is also very knowledgeable about the products and a great resource on skin care in general. Shiseido is so lucky to have her. read more

I know you are probably thinking, "if you aren't going to steal anyway then why does it matter if they follow you?", but that doesn't matter. When my family or I are in dire need of some new kitchen appliance or maybe something for the home, our ass checks out Macys. I love Macys in that you can get some really awesome quality stuff for a sweet ass deal. Our microwave was starting to poop out. Seriously, it would be "on" but wouldn't make any noise. Crazy. So my mom said "I need to get a new microwave ... Diego (my nephew) almost got upset because his milk wasn't warm." Last thing you want is a 2 year old kid crying over his milk. We headed over here because heading to Monterey was a bit too far for us to travel today because of a time constraint. We took the escalator "up" to the cellar (retarded, I know) to see their selection if microwaves. Naturally, I'm checking out pots, pans and random Martha Stewart stuff I clearly don't need. Like who needs a Scent Neutralizing "Rub Away" Bar for $9.99? Yeah, I'm sure I could justify why I need it. I found an awesome deal on a small frying pan from Tools of the Trade for $15.99. Hells yeah. Sweet deal. Plus it's like 100x better quality than stuff I'd find in Target. Tools of the Trade stuff is really high quality for the price you get. While I was drooling over the other cooking sets, my mom was checking out the appliances. She said she couldn't find the microwaves, so I start looking. Lo and behold, there's 1 freakin' microwave brand. And it's not like it's out on display for you to open and look at. It's in a box. A beat up box that looks like it was dropped down a few flights of stairs. And then you see another 8 beat up microwaves in boxes. I told my mom "Da - ... what brand is that?" Yeah it was a good price ($59), but we couldn't tell if it would work for us based on the beat up box. Why did they only have 1 freakin' brand of microwave????? It goes without saying that the "cellar" sucks at this store. The cellar by the way needs to be downstairs ... in a basement. But seeing how this is the old JC Pennys, you don't have a lot to work with. The store in general is small. Makes me wish that we had gone to the Monterey store because their Macys is twice as big and has a legit cellar with loads of products to choose form. Anyway, we left sans microwave, but I did pick up my pan and my mom found some Martha Stewart french rolling pin. For both items, it was $24. Nice price ... gotta love those coupons in the mail and owning a Macys card. All in all, this Macys sorta sucks ass, but sometimes you leave with something you didn't expect to find and when the price is right, hey that's all you need to justify buying it right then and there. read more

2 different reviews: one is for the women's clothing department, the other is for the housewares department. Women's clothing: came here on New Years eve to purchase a little black dress in a hurry. I couldn't really find anything I wanted, then all of a sudden, this awesome client services girl came to my rescue. I think she pulled 10 dresses for me that I hadn't even seen while I was looking. She knew where everything was too. So speedy, efficient, and pleasant. I hope I run into more people like her in the store. Housewares: came in to buy a juicer. It was on sale, and I got a 10% discount with my Macy's card. I was so stoked when the guy helping us knew so much about the product, return policy, warranty, etc. He even answered some questions about sheets. Excellent customer service!! read more

Review is about the Women section & Bra section I normally don't write negative reviews, as I feel it is not worth my time, but this was so bad I just have to write about it. If I could give them zero stars I would. On the first floor they have makeup, purses, shoes, lingerie, and almost all of the women's clothing except for the Women section (aka Plus Sizes). That section is upstairs BEHIND the linens section TUCKED AWAY in a corner making you feel like it is a reject section. Yes we Macy's will carry your size, but don't expect us to make it easy to find, don't expect it to be clean, nicely stocked, organized, or even staffed well. My size is XL or XXL in the Regular women's section, in the Plus Size section I am a X (sometimes called 0X) or 1X, depending on the type of clothing and clothing line. The Women section upstairs was not organized well, many hangers were broken, sizes were not in order, dressing rooms were dirty. The lady working there would help you, she was nice, but if you didn't need help she wasn't doing anything to cleanup or organize the section. Now really why should she, the section she is working is obviously hidden for a reason, if the store doesn't want to put it with the rest of the Women's stuff why should she go out of her way to keep it nice. I tried on 4 shirts and 2 pants, all of which didn't fit right at all. *** 2 out of 6 of the hangers were broken. *** None of the racks I went through had the clothes in order by size, sometimes not even by color. I also shopped multiple sections downstairs as well. In all of the sections downstairs, even some of the clearance racks, the clothes were in order by size and color (XS through XL, sometimes they even had XXXL). None of the hangers were broken, the sections were clean, well organized, nicely arranged, and inviting. The dressing rooms were also clean, nicely organized and maintained. What a complete contrast to the Women (Plus Size) section upstairs. Really tells you how much they don't want Plus Size customers. Now on to the Bra section, how so completely frustrating. Most but not all of the Bras were organized by manufacture and color, but NOT by SIZE. You had to dig through the racks, looking at each individual bra to find your size. It was like searching for a Bra in a discount store. Even then I have found more organized discount store Bra sections. Now after my experience in the Plus Size section and Bra section why should I purchase the $170 purse I found shortly after walking into the store. Really I don't think so, if later I decide I have to have it, I will be purchasing it at another store, maybe even another Macy's location. I should point out that this Macy's does not represent all Macy's I have had excellent experiences at other locations in the Plus Size section and in the Bra section. I have had excellent help in both as well, and they have been on the same floor and the Plus Size section felt like just another section in the Women's area. read more

This is for the MAC counter in Macy's. I scheduled an appointment about a week prior to the date I needed my makeup done and explained that it would be for my birthday and lightly gave the girl a description of what I wanted. She was very friendly and set up my appointment for 1:30 on Wednesday. When I arrived I noticed only one girl working. I politely let her know I was there for my appointment and she looked at me like she had no idea what I was talking about. Then finally, she rudely said, "Oh I guess you must be the birthday girl. Well I'm the only person working so I'll be going back and forth a lot. Take a seat." I sat down and she didn't even look at the pictures of what I wanted. She hardly acknowledged me. Another woman walked up and the MUA started putting makeup on her face to match a concealer. Um, hello... I have an appointment? So by 1:45 and after three more girls have been helped and I haven't received any recognition, I walked away. She saw me and didn't say anything. She lost out on at least $70 worth of purchase I was planning on making. Instead I went over to another makeup counter and had someone help me immediately and give me exactly what I wanted. It turned out gorgeous and I got some flawless coverup that matches my skin tone perfectly. As I was walking out I winked at the girl who'd ignored me and who now was busy doing a whole lot of nothing. MAC MUA's are stuck up and gossipy. They also treat you like you're stupid and that you aren't worth their time. I'd definitely not recommend this counter. read more

My boyfriend and I have had such good service here the last couple of times, that I felt it was noteworthy. My boyfriend HATES shopping for dress pants, but the sales associate dedicated at least 45 minutes to bringing him a ton of different styles and explaining the proper fit, etc. We left with 2 new pairs of dress pants and a happy, confident, dressed up guy. ;) Then last weekend we were here and Caryn in the bedding department took the time to walk us through all the various kinds of duvets (which I didn't even know there were so many distinctions), the tricks of how they make their displays look so nice (put a queen duvet in a twin duvet cover and it makes it look all fluffy and fabulous) and told us about all the different bedding brands and how they stack up. She was awesome and very patient with us. Committing to bedding patterns is apparently not our strong suit. Anyway, if you're not sure what you're in the market for, the folks at this Macy's are amazing. Like, old school "committed to service" friendly. read more

Pretty bad about keeping a good stock of normal-sized clothes. If you're super fat or super skinny or super tall, then you're probably ok though. The shoe dept is decent. The sales can be really good. The housewares dept is decent. Better than Gottschalks but that isn't saying much. Go there once a year at most. Get the Macy's card each time and cancel it immediately. On top of the sale prices, that can often get you a really good deal. read more

There used to be a time when you went to an upscale department store and received actual service instead of people who merely rang up your purchases and asked you if you wanted a store credit card. The shoe department employees are great. They are generally friendly and very helpful. A recent experience saw one of the employees, when he couldn't find a shoe in my side, searching the available stock on hand for similar styles in my shoe size. The makeup counter people and fragrance people are very helpful as well, taking the time to assist you in finding the choice that works well for you. read more

My daughter's wedding was coming up in two days and I needed a pair of heels to go with my "mother of the bride" suit. I went to Macy's in Capitola, and was helped with the sweetest young man. I ended up finding - not one pair - but two pair of shoes that I just couldn't pass up. Both were perfect for my outfit, though they were quite different in style and shade of color. AFTER I decided to get them both, I found out that, for that day, there was a sale going on where you get $25 off if you buy two pair of shoes! Perfect. I brought them both to the wedding...wore one pair for the ceremony and the beginning of the reception. As my feet started to get a bit tired from the newness of the shoes, I then changed into my other pair. It worked out GREAT. I then sent the groom's mother and grandmother to this Macy's on the day before the wedding. They each found two outfits that they couldn't pass up, and got them on sale for about $25 each! I really enjoyed my shopping experience at Macy's. They had the right selection and very pleasant and helpful service. read more

Look, I like Macys overall but the one in Capitola is a terrible example. The selection of goods is extremely limited (it may be simply too small) and is particularly limited in Men's and Kids. Housewares is also basically non-existent. Service is good, though, and I've never had a problem with returns, wrapping, etc. But honestly I don't shop here anymore since there's nothing to buy. I notice most of the positive reviews have to do with the cosmetics counters. I suspect if you use cosmetics your experience may differ from mine. read more

I purchased a pair of shoes for my son at your LA Century City store using my Visa CC. Your staff was able to look up the purchase for with in your system. It was part of a larger purchase I made getting new work clothes for my son who lives in SoCal. The boots apparently were defective as the shoe separated from the sole after less than 4 wearings. We live in Northern California and this happened when he was in town for thanksgiving. This was the ONLY pair of shoes that he traveled with. I contacted your customer service via phone-- and they researched which locations had the same shoe in his size so that I could return/replace them but when I called the local store (Stanford) they said that the size 9 they had was actually also a return due to a defect- I told them that maybe there was a problem with this shoe- and that I would prefer to return and then get another pair that worked for him. I was told that this would be fine- and I chose to go to the Capitola store on the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving. We went there right when the store opened as I had LOTS to do to get ready for hosting our Thanksgiving meal the following day. Your store was poorly staffed- but I waited in line to let the cash register person know what I was needing-- she said that she would send someone over to where we were as my son was trying on shoes in your men's dept. The young gal who helped me took his damaged shoes- and said she was going to go start the return process. Once we were ready to check out- she came back from her supervisor and shockingly told me that you WOULD NOT accept the damaged boots as a return BECAUSE THEY HAD BEEN WORN!!! I couldn't believe that you wouldn't stand behind damaged merchandise like this. I asked your supervisor to look up how much I had originally paid (100.00). The shoes we wanted to take as a replacement were on sale for $49.00. I offered to make it a straight swap but he said he couldn't take the other shoes back-- new policy he said!! I asked if he could better the price on the new pair-- he offered me an extra 10%. I told him that was still not acceptable--- He offered an additional 10%. I paid for the new shoes--- and took the damaged pair with me. Once the holiday was over I took the boots to my local cobbler's shop next to Valley Fair-- ( cobblers bench) and they COULD NOT believe that you didn't stand by your merchandise. I paid for them to repair the damaged pair--and I told them to pull the other boot apart to redo the glue/cement on it as well- SOMETHING THAT MACY'S SHOULD HAVE OFFERED TO TAKE CARE OF!! They said that their regular fee was $35 for this-- When the shoemaker did his repair he said that the cement in the heel was only 3 DOTS of glue/cement-- not a full layer and clearly it was NOT CLAMPED when it was constructed. The boot was made in Bangladesh- I told your supervisor that I will NEVER purchase from Macy's again-- you clearly don't understand customer service. We weren't returning them because we changed our mind- didn't like the color - or any other scams that I'm sure consumers pull on you--- THIS WAS A DEFECTIVE SHOE!! My question to you is-- Was the Supervisor at Capitola Macy's correctly following your new policy? If so- I think you need to rethink this immediately--- read more

This review is for the Bareminerals department. My intention is to give an honest review without sounding disparaging. If I do, I sincerely apologize. Every time I've gotten color-matched at this Bareminerals, it turns into the same story: "She's asian, put her in something yellow-, olive- or golden-based." Never worked, and now I have a drawer filled with Light, Golden Medium, Medium Beige, and Golden Fair. I've explained (god knows how many times) that although my skin is yellow, it is fair with cool/pink undertones and looks best in cool colors - I would even go in wearing icy grays that complimented my skin to make it easier on them - but they kept slapping on Light or Golden Medium and told me it was a perfect match. When that didn't work and I had to go back to fix it, they switched to the Golden spectrum, which was another massive fail. I explained that I don't have any olive tones, but being asian, they kept slapping that stuff on me and sending me on my way. Finally, they suggested Medium Beige, which was the closest I could get without looking too chalky in the daylight; but even then, it wasn't a great match. So I finally just said, "Screw it," and went back to picking out my own cosmetics like I did before all of these consultants got their hands on me. And you name it, I've had this same problem with Bobbi Brown, Mac, etc. I always walk out of those places looking orange, dirty brown, ruddy, washed out, or cumin-yellow. The only place that did me right was Prescriptives with their custom-made foundation and powders, but they closed. I loved Prescriptives. They were like the Beni-Hanas of cosmetics, mixing up their magic on a slab, with their spatulas and rainbow powders, right in front of you. Anyway, I finally walked right up to the BM counter and said, "I want the Medium foundation." They scrunched their faces and said, "You're not medium, sweetie. It'll be too pink on you." Exactly. So I said, "Trust me, it'll match." Of course, they had to prove me wrong and sat me in the chair. But once they put it on me and saw it was a perfect match, they couldn't very well admit they were wrong. They kept insisting it wasn't a match and called over other girls to verify this. But I bought it anyway. And here's the important thing, girls: even though this Medium shade looks pink in the jar, it all depends on how it's going to blend with your skin tone, and my fair yellow skin with pink undertones seems to be ok with getting into bed with it. I still haven't found the perfect shade, though, so if any of you pale, cool-toned Asian girls have any suggestions, I welcome it. For me, a good foundation is one that you can wear ALONE without any radiance powders or blush. If you can wear just your foundation and look healthy, then it's the right color. If you need to apply blush and other colors to give your skin a pop once you've applied foundation, then it isn't the right color. The wrong foundation shade will give you a mask-like appearance, which is why you need the added face colors to keep you from looking anemic. If you have to, purchase two or more colors to customize your shade. It's better to spend the money than walk around looking ridiculous. Here's the thing with most makeup companies and department store consultants: they really don't get that asian skin doesn't automatically mean "yellow/golden undertones". We run the gamut just like caucasians, Indians, African-Americans, etc. We can have pink, neutral, beige, tan, golden, and olive tones to our skin, too. Sit at my dinner table during the holidays, and you'll see that my bro and I are the only ones with pink tones, while my relatives have yellow, olive, and neutral ones. Oh, another thing I really don't understand is the lighting at this Bareminerals' counter. When I looked in the mirror (after they'd applied the Golden foundation), it literally looked like I had cumin on my face. When I mentioned it, she said, "Oh, it's this mirror. It has yellow lighting, not a natural one." WHY would a makeup counter use a yellow light? So, for understanding how skin tones really work, I give them one star. For their return policy and politeness, I give them a five (I've had to return a couple of things, and it was never a problem). But I can't average out my ratings to a three because they really do need more education. Personally, I think painters would make great makeup consultants since they study and understand color spectrums, color tones, and color mixing. AND JUST A PERSONAL NOTE TO ALL MACY'S CASHIERS: When you're already checking out a customer, don't spend the entire time helping the second cashier's customers instead. Purchasing a sweater literally took 20 minutes because of this (no exaggeration), and there wasn't even a line. I was ready to grab the scan gun out of the lady's hand and check myself out. I really enjoy the Macy's mens section. They offer a great selection of clothes that work for a more classy environment. I can go here and get clothes for ever day or pick out a nicer sports coat or casual suit. They offer brand names and a good selection of those brands. The staff is always helpful and provide good feedback on what clothes go well together and concepts that would work well for different body types. read more

Tried to return home products purchased online at this location today. They told me because they don't sell home products at this location that they could not accept my return because they can't send it elsewhere and would have to "damage out" the products. I'm sorry - that is garbage. First of all, if I could only return it to a location that sold home products that should be very clearly laid out online where I printed my receipts so that I could return them to a store. Second, I find it beyond believable that Macy's isn't pulling product from any of their stores back to a central distribution center on an at least weekly basis and therefore easily able to return almost any product sold, especially something like curtains and curtain rods. I believe it was lie to say that if they took back these products they would be discarded. No wonder this company is doing so poorly. read more

I was not impressed when I came in tonight. I wanted to pick out a new eye shadow and make up primer from the lancome counter. I was not greeted by either sales lady in the vicinity. There was a couple I could see that was waiting to be helped as well. When I did ask one of the women for help, came over opened the drawer and blew me off. The other sales girl came over. No one asked if I had any questions or needed any help. The make up people in the rest of the store were equally unfriendly and unpleasant. The only reason the review is getting two stars is because atleast the department was semi clean and even that is stretching it. read more

I actually like this Macys... at least the sales racks! I think that things move off the shelf slower here so it's possible to get good finds in sizes other than 2 and 16. However, the selection here is definitely smaller than other Macys, and they just eliminated the BCBG section here. :( Sales people are friendly, and I will definitely return to comb through the sales racks. read more

as other reviewers had said, the selection is lacking especially in the handbag selection. i really only hit the capitola mall macy's when my husband needs a few work shirts and i happen to be in the area. this was the case yesterday. i went in and in the span of 30min i got 4 shirts for my husband, 4 shirts for my son, managed to skim the clearance rack AND hit the MAC counter all with my 4 year old in tow. oh the MAC counter. i love this baby version of a MAC store. each time i'm given more attention than the times i've hit a full MAC store even if they're busy and have less employees working than current customers. the gals here are informative and very helpful. i mostly knew what i needed this trip, but the sales person still helped me make my hasty decision. bottom line, its a department store. has a fair selection. if you're looking for more, you should head over to san jose/san francisco and do some real shopping. read more

I was very pleased today! I got some new makeup and all the girls were very helpful and actually looked like they wanted to be there. Every product she put on my face she explained the best way to apply it, take it off, and what/ how to wear it correctly. Also I loved how they knew everything about every line that they offered. Some times i feel like the people who work here are not very nice and dont wanna be there no one really smiles at all. the other day i went to the Lancome counter to get a color match one of the lady asked another girl ( Elise i think it was) if she would do a color match and she gave me a dirty look and said No. So the girl with the Broken arm had to do it... She was very nice and did it for me.. to me that was VERY rude... Sales rack no that many But at times you can find good things. read more

This Macy's has the slowest employees I've ever seen. It shouldn't take 15 minutes to ring up each customer doing a straight purchase!

This review is high praise for Veronica Barker in cosmetics...Lancome, I think. I am a dude and don't use cosmetics. I do however have customers that do and have sent them to Veronica. I have also brought friends to Veronica Barker for both fragrances and cosmetics. Veronica has provided stellar customer service every time.
