I was so impressed with the friendly, knowledgeable, even extravagant customer service I received recently at Beck's Shoes. After a great experience there a year or so ago, I chose to visit again in my search for a comfortable-yet- dressy, low-heeled sandal. Karla, the store manager, went above and beyond to help me. She was knowledgeable about every brand, its strengths and weaknesses, and how they tended to fit. And, after happily helping me try on at least a dozen options, she was understanding when I decided none of them were quite right. I can't say enough. I've been shopping for good shoes for years... I have very strange feet. I wear a size 12 women's, have a super high instep, high arches, and my right heal broke 20ish years ago and never healed properly. As I've entered my late 40's, my hips, back, knees, etc have been hurting. A lot. I've done my best to ignore it, trying different shoes and insoles from online shopping in hope of fixing problems so many people have ascribed to poor footwear. I had given up. I was resigned to simply not being able to stand for more than fifteen minutes without having to fight and hide pain... and I kind of forgot it. This afternoon at Beck's shoes, that changed. Jon greeted me and asked what I was looking for. I described my weird feet and the problems, and he listened sympathetically before he went back to see what they had in stock. A few minutes later he returned with three different kinds of shoes, all in my size. He helped me try them on and (of course) the first pair he tried was the one I went with. I mentioned I felt like I wasn't getting the arch support I needed, and he rushed off and brought insoles with the highest arch I'd ever seen. My feet, in the shoes and insoles, felt like they were floating on clouds... but stable. I wore them out of the store, then went off to walk around. I kept finding myself thinking, "I need to sit, or I'll be in big trouble later when I can't move for the pain." Then I'd check in with my body... my hips, knees, back,and even my heel felt fine! I walked at least three miles today in my new Hoka shoes. When I got back home, I was able to stand for over an hour doing chores. My feet are tired now... but they and my body are fine. Empathy, a willingness to listen. Amazing products meet expertise. My 50+ year-old feet just can't handle the $4 rubbah slippahs any more and I was on the hunt for a good pair of flip flops that I could wear in Hawaii and be able to walk to the beach without getting sore feet. I called Slap Happy, the flip flop store in Capitola Village and said that I was looking for a stiff-soled, thong-style flip flop with arch support and metatarsal arch support, and asked if they carried anything like that. Let's just say that the lady who answered the phone was less than friendly or helpful. I then called Beck's Shoes in the Capitola Mall. The phone was answered by a very friendly gal who knew exactly what they carried and what features different brands of shoes had. Even on the phone, I could tell that this gal was a shoe expert. We went to Beck's Shoes and I was impressed with their extensive selection of flip flops and sandals. I told the gal that I was the one who called looking for the stiff-soled, thong-style flip flop with arch support and metatarsal arch support. She guided me toward the Aetrex and the Spenco flip flops. The Aetrex flip flops are a single piece of molded foam that comes in a variety of colors. I ended up with a lavender pair that feels like I'm walking on marshmallows, with excellent comfort and support. They were $55. The Spenco are a more traditional style flip flop with a cloth upper and a foam sole. They are VERY comfortable and supportive. These were $85. The gal who helped me was Beth, the Assistant Manager. She really knew a lot about the brands of shoes that Beck's carried, the features each brand had, and various foot problems that could be helped by the right shoes. She was also very good at getting me the correctly fitting flip flops. And she was friendly and nice. Yes, these are somewhat expensive flip flops, but I think that you get what you pay for. Being able to walk to the beach in some cute, comfortable, supportive flip flops, that don't hurt your feet, is worth it. read more

Thank you Mason for your wonderful care of my Dad today. My 86 year old Dad is in town to celebrate his birthday. He had a fall on the steps last night that we blamed on the shoes. He agreed to go shoe shopping and immediately I thought of Beck's. My Dad is wonderful, but has no patience for shopping or spending money on himself. Mason was wonderful with him. Really listened to what he liked and did not like about his shoes and orthotics. Took time, offered him water, held his hands while he measured his feet (to steady him), and handled my Dad's stinky old orthotics. All along singing along to the music and cracking jokes. My physical therapist recommended off-the-shelf orthotics, and I have been getting them at Becks for years. The customer service is great. They know their products and patiently listen to my concerns. They have a machine you stand on to show where you're placing the weight on your feet so they can steer you to right brand and style. I've been there before and it's always been a good experience. They trim and insert the new orthotics into my shoes, so I don't have to do that at home (and so I don't procrastinate lol). Their policy is that I can try them for 30 days and if they don't feel great, I can bring them back and try another style. This weekend Matt and Mason seemed extra friendly and helpful. 10/10 customer service! Mason was extremely helpful in finding me a pair of black rain resistant boots! I was in a pinch and needed a pair ASAP for a funeral, which is very difficult for me as I have size 12 women's thumpers. But he did amazing finding me a couple of options and making sure they fit perfectly. The Chelsea style Docs I ended up getting were slightly loose but no worries, Mason to the rescue! He added in a different arch support and some inserts and they fit perfectly! They are now my favorite pair of boots and I wear them everywhere! Thank you so much! read more

This review addresses the lack of customer service. I cannot address the pricing or quality of the merchandise because I walked out due to the attitude of the clerk. After waiting patiently 5-10 minutes for the sales clerk to finish up with another customer she completely ignored me and went back behind the counter. I walked over to her with the item in my hand to ask for my size. She eventually looked up, stared at me as if she didn't recognize a human being and impatiently asked me "did you want something?" Beth helped me out this past weekend with getting my first pair of inserts. Recently everyday my feet and knees had been hurting and I kept feeling like it must have been due to the fact that I am over weight. Well after two days of wearing the recommended inserts my feet and knee pain is gone after months of excruciating pain. Turns out I have plantar fasciitis and these inserts work wonders. Tried Beck's Shoes at the mall after going to Red Wing's for the last 6 years, my size wasn't in stock and back ordered for weeks.  I entered an empty store at Beck's and a rep comes out from the back to greet me. I proceed to tell them what I was looking for along with a coverage policy for new boots from my employer.  They go back to the backroom and another rep instead comes out to assist me and I'm greeted with the same scenario.  It was difficult to understand this new rep's spoken words. I needed safety boots for work to replace my old worn pair.  The cost of the boots were covered by my employer, for what I was looking at, but the experience turned into a debate on coverage cost instead of getting new boots. The prices are handwritten on the sole of the shoes and marked up from MSRP. As comparison, I had earlier chosen boots at Red Wing and they honored the coverage policy, but my size wasn't available there. I went to Beck's after hoping to experience something similar, and I felt the focus should have been on finding the right boot first and handling the finances after. Beck's service rep focused on my payment coverage policy and trying to prove me wrong instead of helping me choose the right boot. I just felt bad about the whole experience. It's bad business to patronize a would be customer who works locally on policies. If you need work boots please steer clear. read more

I was visiting Capitola with my teenagers and we decided to check out their mall. My youngest has wide feet and we always struggled with finding wide shoes in general and so we would just settle on whatever we could find. We were walking when I saw a "wide shoes" sign in the window of Becks. I have never heard of this store and was curious. I was immediately greeted when I walked in and I asked a few questions about their sizes. I didn't get the name of the employee that helped us but I wish that I did. He took the time to measure my son's feet and informed us that he is a 4E. He brought out a few samples to try and when my son finally tried on a shoe that fit, he was about to cry. I appreciated how knowledgeable he was about shoes and that he was patient with us. I was impressed with his customer service. We have found our new favorite shoe store and thankfully I found a location that isn't 2 and 1/2 hours away. read more

I bought a pair of Ah-Nu shoes here two days ago. I was told they would break in after a day or two. After the first full day of wearing them my feet were killing me. I took them back for a refund or something. I was told because I had them on and went outside they could not be resold and they would not refund me any of my $135 or give me store credit. First off why would you resell shoes that had been worn by someone for a day? Send them back to the manufacturer as bad shoes. I have had to return shoes to The Sock Shop in Santa Cruz and they had no issues refunding my money or giving me store credit. I was told, by the manager, there was nothing they would do for me, besides sell me Insoles for $50. It should be noted, I did ask for store credit and she could not do that either. I had no choice but to keep the shoes I will never wear. I tossed them out. Again other shoe shops would have refunded or given me store credit for a product that didn't work. I will never shop at Beck's Shoes again. I will also tell all my friends never to shop at this Becks or any other. read more

I had injured my ankle and went into bags to get some atrex insoles. David Goularte serviced me and did a very good job of being thorough and asking questions, explaining my readout and suggesting the best insoles and shoe brands for me Specific to what I'm used to and also what is best for my feet as well. He should be the manager of the store. This is only my second time at the store and the first time I was helped by a young lady an assistant manager who gave me minimal service And didn't go over the AAtrex print results with me or have it sent into the company!! read more

Both pair of shoes I bought from there were defective. First pair I bought the sole was larger than the other so I went to exchange the shoes. I exchanged them for a second pair and unfortunately I didn't notice the holes where your shoe laces go through are off so when I tighten them it's uneven and now it's hurting the side of my foot. When I exchanged the first pair the guy who helped me said "I'm noting in the system that the first pair of shoes I exchanged for you was a courtesy." I felt intimidated by the guy so now I won't even go in to take my the second pair in. And the shoes I bought aren't cheap. ($200) I don't recommend this place what so ever. You don't go to Beck's for bargain shoes or sale prices, but when their products are priced above MSRP, it's a little frustrating. I want to buy local, and I don't mind paying full price for good service (which honestly is hit or miss) and quality (which is always high), but shame on Beck's for trying to gouge customers. For example, the last pair I purchased was priced over $15 above the manufacturer's price. The pair before that was priced approx $20 over the manufacturer's price. Why should I shop in Beck's instead of going directly to the manufacturer when there is profit by pricing shoes appropriately at retail price, which gives plenty of markup to work with? The service is not so great that I'd pay a 20% premium for it. In fact, there have been plenty of times I've been in the store and couldn't even get a salesperson to acknowledge me. I wonder if there is an agreement with suppliers about pricing, and what they'd think about the extra markup. I assume Beck's can only get away with this because some of its customer base is not web savvy. I only started to notice when I was looking for a size Beck's didn't have. Noticed the price different, and started comparing. Then I started really looking, and noticed a consistent inflation of the manufacturer's sales price. Not cool. read more

I have been referred to Becks several times, as I have foot problems. They are so good, knowledable & helpful there-they really know their stuff, and care! They carry a great line of good shoes and products. I just went back as I was desperate, and having problems walking. AL WASSERMAN helped me, and I left with three pair of shoes, all which felt good! Ordinarily, I have no luck elsewhere. He listened to my problems with my feet, and brought me out several different pair that he thought might be right for me, and he was right! I have a high arch walked in to do some browsing and got my foot measured turned out to make my current flats more comfortable I just needed some insoles! Best suggestion I could have ever gotten. I got some Super feet. 2 years now and I use them regularly in most of my flats, low heel boots and my Merrell lace ups. Best investment I could make for my feet! I can walk for miles. Sales person was right to tell me it would take some time to get used to wearing the insoles. Now I can't live without them. If you go in to get any make sure you get the correct ones don't settle for what's in stock. My sister took the men's and they never worked out in her flats (too wide) for kind of shoes she wears and got discouraged. Also this store has the best Dansko and Ugg selections around! read more

Dear Fellow Shoe Shoppers, I just needed to post my very pleased and happy experience at Becks Shoes and Gi Gi's assistance. I purchased a pair of shoes in April, dream shoes, Ahnu brand, loved them and Al was an amazing sales person and super helpful! The only problem was within a month they had stretched out a bit too much to be easily wearable and I was disappointed. I brought back my worn shoes to the store and expected them to say no way, these have been worn, can't help you. Instead GiGi asked me if she could check it out and get back to me the next day....I got a call back and went in to exchange the shoes, they had another pair, a different style of Ahnu shoes, I exchanged for, and I paid 10 dollars more and couldn't be happier! Ahnu shoes feel like you have had them forever and no breaking in period for comfort, I love them! So overall, excellent customer service, complete customer satisfaction, super sales help and no pressure to buy. Great selection and they always seem to have my size in stock 40,41 or 9.5 or 10 in ladies shoes! Amazing! Thank you so much!
