My time working as a Clinique Counter Manager at Macy's was unfortunately marked by terrible working conditions and a lack of basic employee rights. I felt compelled to share my experience to highlight the issues that potential employees should be aware of.
Firstly, the management was highly unsympathetic to employees' needs. During my time there, I experienced a severe diabetic episode and needed to take my already late lunch break to manage my condition. However, despite my hands visibly shaking, my Beauty Manager refused to let me go, which not only jeopardized my health but also demonstrated a gross disregard for employee well-being.
Additionally, it was standard practice for the staff to work 9-hour shifts without any scheduled lunch breaks. I discovered this after participating in an overnight inventory shift, during which we were not provided the one-hour break we were required to receive. After speaking with the Fulfillment Employees, I learned that this is the norm during inventory shifts because they aim to complete the work as quickly as possible. If they don't, their 9-hour shift could be extended even longer. This practice not only violates labor regulations but also creates an extremely stressful and unhealthy work environment. The lack of breaks led to decreased morale and productivity among the team.
Another troubling aspect was the management's disregard for employee requests to call out when genuinely needed. Despite already following the proper procedure to call out due to a hospital emergency, I was still asked to report to work and received multiple calls by my Beauty Manager. This disregard for personal circumstances added to the already difficult working conditions.
Furthermore, even during my pre-approved time off, I was contacted for work-related inquiries that were not urgent. This lack of respect for personal time further eroded my work-life balance and contributed to a highly frustrating work environment.
Overall, my experience at Macy's was deeply disappointing. The lack of respect for employees' health and well-being, coupled with poor management practices, made it an environment I could no longer tolerate. My decision to quit came after much consideration, but I believe it was necessary due to ongoing concerns with the leadership and work environment. I suggest you take a look at the pattern of employees who are leaving and the one department they are leaving from. It's not a coincidence that I am the third to leave in as many months, which underscores the challenges we're facing under the current leadership. I have seen firsthand how a leader who cannot keep the team together is like a conductor with a dwindling orchestra. When key players continue to leave, it becomes clear that, whether you want to admit it or not, something is fundamentally wrong. It's evident that there's a deeper issue here.
Although I loved working for Clinique, working under the current management of Macy's Mid Rivers Mall has drained me to my core and has caused me unnecessary stress that I can no longer handle. Given the repeated inappropriate instances involving my manager, I have no confidence that she will change. I hope Macy's will address these issues to ensure a better working environment for their staff in the future. This location is a sinking ship, the time to address these issues is now. read more
