Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew! I'm a huge fan of taters in any form, so when I visited Sydney, I just had to try out the Mad Spuds Café in Surrey Hills. Decorated with all things spuds - Mr. Potatoheads, posters, fliers, figurines - this earthy café specializes in potatoes of all kinds! I got the Whacko Taco, which were beautifully presented baked spuds, topped with spicy ground Mexican style beef, avocado, salsa, and sour cream. The ground beef wasn't much of an authentic Mexican flavor, but was still good, especially with the rest of the condiments. The potato baked to perfection - including the skin - which was edible all the way through! Often times the skin gets too dry or burnt, but this was perfect! The ingredients were fresh, and they didn't skimp on the presentation. The food was delicious, but a bit pricy for what it's worth. The chai latte wasn't bad either, and to top it off, their service, although a bit slow, was friendly. The Little Piggy - baked spuds with crispy bacon strips, mozzarella, brie, feta, and sour cream - also looked really delicious! How much can you do with a potato? That was my thought when I tried out Mad Spuds. I thought they were limiting themselves by focusing just on potatoes when there is a whole world of food out there. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they do focus on other things too. But potatoes are their thing. From source to stomach they do pay huge attention to detail. Only special organic potatoes from a place called Robertson are used. They are baked in a special potato oven to give that extra special crispiness. And the fillings are lovely, interesting and fresh There is a comprehensive breakfast menu, salads and toasted sandwiches but it kinda seems silly not to try a spud at Mad Spuds. They're not cheap mind you. But a more filling and satisfying feed you're not going to find easily. read more

There are certain traditions that have been in place since forever. They have become so ingrained in us that the lines between tradition and routine become blurry. Traditions like the Sunday roast or Turkey at Christmas. If you're an Irish man then no weekend will ever be complete until you find a heart attack on a plate in the form of a full Irish breakfast. We've all made the face at the server when you've been served bacon and eggs with some tomato car crash and avocado mush on your plate, not quite offended but not sure if they're joking or not. There's no need to make that face anymore, oh no. These guys know what we want and have fried it up for you. Soda bread, potato cake, black and white pudding, hash brown the works, there's no messing around. If you're missing your fry up, then look no further. This one is top notch. These guys probably do other stuff and I'm guessing do it well given that they're always busy but I haven't eaten anything else other than the fry up. Why would I? The Boxty and the Irish breakfast (breakfast is served all day - score!) are the two plates we shared. The food is alright. The service is fine. There just wasn't anything that set MSC apart for me. A-OK just about sums up our two visits, although I'm sure my wife would give an additional star (she's a big fan of one of their salads). I've tried an eggs benedict, and one of the baked spuds, and while the eggs benedict was pretty solid, the spud was not... not at all. I'm sure we'll be back again, and I hope to enjoy it enough to add at least another star, but based on our two trips so far... meh. Next time I'd probably try a sandwich of some kind, or the eggs benedict again. SIT IN ... a narrow alleyway of a cafe whose ceiling is probably higher than the restaurant is wide. The walls are a bit barren, and the mahogany stools too hard to be truly cafe-chic... though maybe I just have a bony ass :) NIBBLE ON ... some flavorful, vibrant salads! The name of the game at Mad Spuds is "quality nutritious" potato dishes, though what they do best (fried potatoes) doesn't really play a strong hand in the healthful space unless you're deluding yourself (which, given the crowds here, seems to accurately describe the Surry Hill sider mindset!). So, I'll recommend a few of the salads instead, which I think are a bit more forgiving. The corn-crusted chicken salad ($15) packs a real flavor punch, with chicken breast that is first crusted with corn meal, then fried and sliced on top of a bed of spinach and rocket. Crunchy on the outside, perfectly moist and tender on the inside, which can be so difficult to achieve with white meat. It comes with a sweet potato puree that's spiced with lime and is deliriously amazing; a caramelized onion jam; a tangy beetroot relish; and even avocado and kipler potatoes with chili .... Lots going on in this salad, maybe too much. Ironically, the potatoes were the least flavorful component, but were still nicely roasted. Or try the lentil spud crunch ($15), with two massive lentil patties, made crunchy from a quick fry, coupled with pickled yellow cauliflower, ginger, vegan fig puree, almonds, and baby tomatoes. Organic green lentils are piled high on top of the patties, for good measure. Everything is made in-house, from the purees to the jams, and aims to be organic wherever possible, which is a big plus. IMBIBE FROM ... coffee made from Double Roasters beans (of Marrickville origin), awarded two hats recently for a reason. Their coffee runs a bit strong, which is fantastic for a Sunday pick-me-up. I wish they were open for dinner too, but they shut down at 5 pm. TALK TO ... the very friendly staff, who made the rounds, asking how people's meals were, despite the massive turnover of people on an early Sunday afternoon. I got takeaway from here once, and they were kind enough to advise if a 10 minute wait would be all right (it was fine with me, and in fact only took the prescribed amount of time!) read more

Stumbled upon this place one late afternoon. I was pleasantly surprised at how healthy the options were for a great price. We ordered the vegan stack, mad spud stack and a power gulp juice. Everything was just perfect. If you're hesitant to try vegan options then this would be a great place to start because they're options are all full with flavor so you definitely don't feel like you're eating something too plain for your appetite. Lamb & yoghurt salad is one of the best salads I've had in Sydney. Scraped the place dry & was fully satisfied portion & taste-wise. Beautifully made lattes (expert designs made!), hard-to-choose-just-on smoothie & juice selection (which I drank far too fast because it was just so darn good!), great range of foods heavy & light so that you can bring a group you don't know so well & accommodate for various diets & preferences. Outdoor seating available, booth seating with cushioned pillows (my favorite!), & quiet enough to have productive meetings. I can't think of anything not to love about Mad Spuds. It's fresh, organic and healthy, the coffee is delicious and they have gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan and vegetarian options on the menu. "I think" said the sweet potato, "therefore I yam"... Potatoes. That's what you think of when you think of Mad Spuds café. We decided to try it out so we took mum to lunch. Watching the different baked potato dishes coming out of the kitchen made us even more hungry. There were other items on the menu but we stuck to an all potato order. We shared the Mexican, a Little Piggy and a Mad Spud Stack. All of which were delicious. It was a little carb heavy to have too often, but the potato based meals was a nice change to our usual eggs and toast. The only thing on the menu we'd like to try next would have been the potato nachos. There were only about 10 items on the menu that had potatoes in them, it would have been nice to have it also incorporated with more of the items like some of the breakfasts (as hash browns, roasted or skillet fried potatoes) or with the lunch items (as shoestring or steak fries or some type of mashed potato or potato salad side). We were after a late afternoon cafe brunch and stumbled upon this place after wandering around looking for Yelp recommendations. In case you weren't aware, spuds are potatoes and potatoes this cafe sold. A friendly waitress sat us down and provided menus with unfamiliar choices. But no matter, there's an potato element to pretty much every dish so you can make a safe choice. Honestly don't come here if you hate potatoes, it's not your thing. Going outside my comfort zone and I chose a completely unknown choice of the Mad Spud Stack which consisted of a potato cake, haloumi, avocado, roast onion, spud skins, sweet potato and mint yoghurt and a smoothie. My partner opt for the Tasmanian salmon eggs benedict which he loved. We ordered simply and were delivered interesting delicious food. Doesn't happen very often when choosing a place to eat on a whim. We were there until closing and they still weren't pushing us out. They waited a long time for us to finish our food which is a test to their patience and professional ability, they passed well. Next time I'm in the neighbourhood I'd drop in again and make another random unusual choice because well it's potatoes, you can't go wrong!
