This was my first tattoo and I spent a LOT of time researching which artist would do it for me. I completely lucked out when I found Teri at Madame Lazonga's Tattoo. I loved that she had experience with stained glass, as I wanted my tattoo to be of a stained glass cat. She was so encouraging, guiding me through the process, and always replied promptly to my texts. With good humor and a non-anxious presence (which helped my anxious presence!), she created a beautiful work of art on my ankle. People who have seen it have said it doesn't even look like a tattoo --- a real work of art, they have said! It is, indeed. Teri told me that getting tattoos can be addictive and, at first, I didn't believe her. But within 3 days of getting my first one I was already thinking about what my second one would be. A legendary shop with incredible artists! Teri was amazing to work with. From design to completion, she made sure I was happy and comfortable with the entire process. I was inspired by Martin Dobson's hexagon tattoo collection (IG: martindninja), but wanted mine to be a bit more feminine. I requested the hexagons in a garter belt, with a lace border. Teri created a beautiful design, worked through a difficult stencil application, and broke the tattooing into three shorter sessions. I saw erick's work on IG. I loved his use of black, grey, white and stippling. My hand, I had save for over a decade until I secured my dream job as an ER nurse. I'm so happy I choose Erick to do this work- he killed it. He also was respectful & appropriate the whole time- many male tattoo artist I have found will make a pass at females but not this guy. This (immediately defensive) woman answered the phone as if I've never made a decision in my life when I requested a certain placement of my tattoo. I acknowledged that I understood and explained that I've gotten some tattoos and I definitely wanted them on my hands. She continued to scold me for the placement and I ended the phone call. She then TEXTED my phone ... what?!? (Attached photo) I've worked in luxury customer service for 10+ years and I can't believe this person is still allowed to work here without proper training. My friend and I came here for the flash tattoos advertised on instagram. We got here before closing and there was no one in sight. It's ridiculous to charge $100 for a flash tattoo anyway and then to "close" before 7pm.. I'm sorry that some of us have jobs. Great tattoo shop. I was there to see the new artist Dusty. He is a great artist and was able to come up with a great design for a cover up of a cover up. I have been in a lot of tattoo shops but never one with so many awards. Its obvious that Madame Lazonga is an extremely skilled artist and employees the same. I highly recommend stopping by. They do take walk ins but you may want to consider making an appointments as the artists are usually busy and there is only 3 of them. read more

I had a full sleeve done by Vyvyn a few years ago. She took my ideas and reference art, and came up with a fantastic drawing. The end result was great, I get a lot of compliments on the finished work...3 stars because it took soooo looong to complete. In all fairness she told me from the beginning that she worked slow, but it took about 13-15 sittings, around 3 hours each to complete the work (with probably a normal amount of detail). Environment was very welcoming and relaxed. The only downside was I felt like I was in Groundhog's Day every time I had an appointment. The women working there at the time had one topic of interest - 'how men (especially male tattoo artists) are intimidated by successful women'. Over the numerous sittings, I would say there were almost an equal number of male customers, so clearly a healthy segment of the male population was out looking for the best artist, unconcerned that they were female. read more

After having a horrible time with another tattoo shop in north Seattle, I listened to the recommendation of a friend and decided to try Madame Lazonga's near Pike Place Market. I decided to go with the artist John because I really liked the examples he had of futuristic work with robots. After talking with him, I liked him even more because he listened to my ideas and was just as excited as I was. I was also impressed by his fine art background. The process was pleasant -- as much as it can be to have a needle on your rib cage for several hours. I am very happy with the final result and would recommend John and this shop to anyone looking. Don't know bout the others but that heroin addict owner totally messed my tattoo up years ago. The kanji and family crest is all wrong even though I brough the photos. The dragon looks pathetic so I've been stuck with it for years. The drawing she did was fine but when she put on the ink is was f*cked up. I messed up by going back the next day! I walked in tonight hoping for a simple tattoo and was immediately made to feel super uncomfortable. It would be one thing if I had never received a tattoo before- but I have more than I can count on two hands. The tattoo artist/receptionist was condescending, laughed at me, made me sit and look at photos on her phone to "make sure I knew what I was talking about", and then laughed at me some more for what I had asked for. She also questioned multiple times if I "actually knew what I meant". I (obviously) didn't end up doing business here. I can't speak for anybody else that works there, but I felt incredibly uncomfortable and mocked. I've visited dozens of shops in seattle and have never been treated like this. Madame Lazonga is a phenomenal and passionate tattoo artist! She helped pave the way for female artists in a predominately male trade, and she is one of the first to step away from traditional styles of tattoo in favor of truly one of a kind fine-art pieces. Her original art is both beautiful and unique, and her ability to translate and evolve other artist's work into tattoos, as she's doing with my piece, is truly amazing! In addition to the reasons listed above, I chose her because of her exceptional use of custom colors. Rather than using an out-of-the-box palette, she mixes her own colors as she goes. It's as if she's painting on you rather than tattooing, and the results are stunning! In my many sessions with her I also had the pleasure of witnessing the work of her talented apprentice Chloe, who recently completed her apprenticeship and accepted a position as a full fledged artist in the shop (congratulations Chloe!). She has a remarkable ability to quickly translate any and all walk-in requests into tattoos with perfect execution, but her real talent shines in her original art. While Madame Lazonga has truly mastered color, Chloe has mastered black work. Whether it is shading or dots she produces technically perfect and beautiful works of art! After doing plenty of research on this shop, I had only seen a few negative reviews and was optimistic that I would have a fantastic new tattoo added to my existing tattoo. Not quite what happened. After attempting to contact the shop, I was bounced around from artist to artist via email. While I was in town for a trip, I stopped by the shop just for a quick consultation and pricing estimate. I spoke with Steph, who was very polite while I waited for the only artist with any availability, Woods. Come to find the reason he has any availability likely due to the fact that he is a pompous ass. He actually mocked me and the tattoo I was wanting. To my face. Then had the nerve to tell me I would be getting my tattoo at noon the next day, tossed a ridiculous price in the air, demanded cash immediately and as he walked away informed me that someone else would get all of my contact info. Really? Did you honestly think I would pay you anything after you talk to a potential client like that? I can't speak for the other artists, but I find it hard to believe that I would have been happy with anything done by Woods. read more

I was referred to Suzy Todd when I called based on my description of the tattoo I had in mind. I spoke with Suzy about my idea, and immediately knew she was perfect for the job. This was my first tattoo and I was kind of anxious, but Suzy proved to be a professional, funny, highly skilled and talented artist. She drew a beautiful design that was exactly what I was thinking only WAY BETTER. Getting the tattoo was kinda painful (duh), but she told me precisely what to expect and was an all-around delightful human throughout the process. The tattoo isn't even finished yet and I've already had people stop me to ask where I had it done. Suzy is simply an amazing artist and I am totally looking forward to the next session to see her work fully realized! Seriously, this lady's got talent, skills, and excellent taste - I have little doubt that she will soon be far too expensive for most of us, so book her while you can! This is the exact kind of tattoo parlor one should seek out for some high quality inking. The staff is a powerhouse of artistic talent and they are most concerned with making your vision come to life on your skin, not just getting a paycheck. It is quite obvious that everyone here truly loves their job and loves being able to express their art in the tattoo medium (not to say they don't also showcase some amazing paintings and drawings in the shop and in their portfolios: These folks are true artists). And despite all their talent and notoriety, none of them seem to have that high and mighty attitude prevalent in a lot of tattoo artists. I just recently had some work done by Elijah Cole. Up front and honest, he admitted what I wanted done wasn't his usual style but he could definitely manage it. Not only did he do an amazing job, the execution was better than I could have imagined and his style made the image come to life in a way I could not have articulated. Despite having a certain style, he definitely showcases great versatility in his work and is an all around nice, genuine guy. Add to that: the prices here are very decent. Some people might balk at the price of a good tattoo, but if you are paying any less for it, it isn't worth it. High quality work comes with a higher price tag but you can't really put a price on the quality and care you receive from a great artist and a great parlor. There is no comparison between that and the alternative. I highly recommend this shop and Elijah Cole. read more

A friend recommended Madame Lazonga's shop and I was intrigued about going to a shop with all women artists. I looked up Vyvyn's work online and really liked what I saw. Scheduling an appointment for a consultation was easy - I emailed her and she emailed me back the next day with some options for days and times. Getting to the shop was the hardest part (I live in Everett), but parking is a snap with a garage right beneath the building. The shop itself is very nice. It's open and airy, lots of natural light. Very clean, neat and tidy. Vyvyn was great. She looked at the design I wanted and gave me honest feedback about how big the piece would need to be in order to get the detail I wanted. We scheduled an appointment time and I left a deposit of $100. My piece took two sessions to complete. The first was for the outline and some of the color and the second was to finish the color. I am thrilled with the result. Vyvyn's ability to shade and place colors is amazing. She suggested colors a little different from the design I brought in and I went with her suggestion. The work was well worth the total price - it's a piece of art I'm going to carry around with me for the rest of my life, after all. I've already got another piece in mind and am planning on seeing Vyvyn for the work. She is amazing. read more

I have a $200.00 gift certificate from Madam Lazonga for doing some pro-bono work, I took a day off of pay when I worked at Vain, I provided services for the photo shoot, I was promised pictures for my portfolio and a gift certificate of $200.00 with no expiration date. I never received the photos since her staff left her and she said she didn't know where they went. And when I called about using the gift certificate she will not honor it. I wanted a cover-up for a small tattoo that was on my wrist, so I did some research and picked Madame Lazongas based both on their reviews and their location. The artist (Stephanie) was a very poor communicator and wasn't up front about anything, including the price (I should have asked). She freehanded the design, and I okayed it based on the fact that when previous artists freehanded a design on me, they sort of did a sketchy, rough drawing and then filled it in with detail. However, this artist tattooed exactly what she freehanded. What was supposed to be a cute little robot ended up as a solid black, poorly executed stick-figure thing. Literally no one can tell what it's supposed to be until I tell them. It looks like a stick man wearing a hat and a dress. I hate it so much. It looks like a child drew it. It's less than two inches long and cost me $110. But I'm stuck with it until I either have it fixed by someone better or removed completely. Would not recommend. read more

Madame Lazonga was a great match for my tattoo. It was a custom job with intricate details. If you can afford Vyvyn (Madame Lazonga herself) I would recommend it. She's $200 an hour now (!). It was $180 when I went 2 years ago. She doesn't work very fast but she's detailed. Even though I've put almost 10 hours hours into my piece, I probably have twice that much to go. No air conditioning makes it pretty miserable in the summer so try to make an appointment away from those summer months. If you call for an appointment, you will have to wait two or three months to get in with Vyvyn herself. She does take credit cards, but prefers cash (and doesn't charge tax for cash) Also, there is a one year limit on re-touches and even though I spent almost 10 hours getting my tattoo, I was never informed of this. When I called, I was told that any touch up would be $200 an hour. After I left a message expressing my disappointment about this policy, Vyvyn called me back offered to do the touch-up for $100 an hour, which was nice of her to do. read more

Vyvyn is a dream. I simply adore this women! Sweet, caring, soft spoken - she reminds me of a tattooed Disney Princess. I had the most wonderful experience with her, and everyone who worked by her side was just as wonderful. I went in to get a cover up on my lower back. The original tattoo was done when I was 18 at a place on Capital Hill (I think you know whom I mean) The work was sloppy there, and the tattoo was VERY painful - the so called "tattoo artist" on Capital Hill went too deep into my skin causing scaring. I was scared to get anything done after that. I've wanted a cover up for years now, so 7 years later I choose Vyvyn. Working downtown Seattle and also going to Olympus spa offend I've seen so many beautiful pieces. Every single time I've ask the women whom did her work I was told Vyvyn or Suzy, and I'm talking about me asking 30 + different ladies. I got very excited and contacted Vyvyn for the tattoo. :) The cover up that Vyvyn did for me is roses, a red, highly detailed with leaves and thorns - they are just BREATH TAKING - the work in just beyond words, I can't thank her enough. The work she does is what a tattoo should be, done with skill, heart, soul, ... beautiful - TRUE ART. The tattoo should express you as a whole and make you feel beautiful, this tattoo does just that. After talking to many artists, and visiting many shops (both Seattle and Eastside), I chose Ruby Santiago for my first tattoo. I had many ideas about the custom art that I wanted, and she was quite encouraging and inspiring, all while portraying warmth and respect. The shop was extremely clean, inviting, and sterile. All pluses for me. In fact, I was concerned about the tattoo healing in time for a trip to Cabo, and Ruby laid out a plan to do the work in stages. This is my second tattoo, and I regret not doing more research,and coming here first. Granted there is a wait to even see Vyvyn for consult, but it is worth it. Over my several visits she slowly revealed herself to me, and she is an absolute beautiful soul. Her work, is simply striking. As an African American, I was drawn to work I saw she did on another "brotha" and had to know who did it. The attention to detail, outlining, shading, is superb. Vyvyn has been in the game 40 years because she knows what she's doing. Her staff are top notch artists as well. Opposed to my first tattoo, I've have minimal swelling, and healing has been much better. I think it's because she doesn't dig into you like the first hack artist I went to. She's awesome! read more

I went to a handful of other tattoo parlors around town, checking out portfolios and trying to get a sense for the general aesthetic of the places. There are a LOT of really amazing tattoo artists here in Seattle. I chose Madame Lazonga's because of the atmosphere. All of the artists here are very approachable, very talented women. It is extremely female-friendly, with rich velvet wall hangings, bouquets of fresh flowers, and jazz playing quietly in the background. No death-metal, no overabundance of grim reaper or severed head tattoos, no bad attitudes. My tattooer (Jackie, who rocks!) was sooo gentle and reassuring that I didn't feel a moment of anxiety. Best of all? My tattoos are freakin' beautiful and EXACTLY what I wanted and asked for. read more
