I used to go to this cute café every weekend with my friend after our yoga class. A friendly woman would always greet us with a smile, say hello, and take our order. It was always a pleasant experience. At some point, a macho-looking guy started working there, and almost every time we ordered, he would mess up either my order or my friend's. When I brought back the wrong drink, he not only failed to apologize but would grumpily exchange it for the correct item. If it had happened only once or twice, I would have dismissed it as him having a bad day. But since it kept happening so frequently, we eventually stopped going there. The blueberry donut and mocha drink hit the spot. My friend ordered a hot chocolate, but it wasn't sweet. The server seemed grumpy and annoyed when I asked what kind of donuts they had on display because they were not labeled. Maybe he was having a bad moment, but you are the one greeting the customers. Not the best experience. I think it would really help if each baked good had a label. As a first time customer, I had to ask many questions to understand what was in each item, including whether there were nuts, gluten, or almond flour, and whether items were sold by the slice or whole, and at what price. While regular customers may already know this information, having to ask so many questions made the experience less enjoyable. I hope this feedback is helpful, as clearer labeling would make a big difference for new customers. read more

Love, love, love this cafe. What a life saver! Being stuck in Wednesday's monsoon, I needed a cozy place to work. Madame Sousou is the definition of cozy. I didn't realize the donuts were from Doughnut Plant and if I knew that I would have gotten one, but I opt'd for a small prosciutto and mozz sandwich on a baguette with a chai tea latte. Everything was what I needed to warm me up from the storm. And bonus points for the free WiFi. The staff was the lovely. The food was fresh. This place was just perfect. Ate here today for brunch by myself while working as a substitute paraprofessional at P.S. 234 Q. I had brought and ate the beef pastrami bagel sandwich with a sweet ice cold tea. This place is small but has a lot to offer! I've been here a few times for their coffee - they serve lavazza and have a variety of flavors. I've had both the regular and lavender which I REALLY enjoyed but it's definitely strong so only go for the flavor if you really enjoy lavender. More than the coffee what really draws me in is their key lime pie - not overly tarte with a wonderful vanilla lime flavor. They have so many pastries but it's hard to go for anything else knowing how good the key lime is. After a long hiatus, I found myself back at Madame Sousou. The space is cozy, and they also have plenty of covered/outdoor seating in front, along the sidewalk. Pastries are great (most or all pastry appears to be from Balthazar). The noise level inside was a tad bit loud, between the overall acoustics and the music being played. Also, as someone who really dislikes all the cars, aggressive drivers, etc. in the area, having the 33rd Street Raceway right outside Madame Sousou's door, negatively impacted the overall experience for me. I have been to this cafe on and off for a few years now. The pastries are consistently full of flavor and always moist. I especially like this little rum and brown sugar treat. We came here for a Too Good To Go order (it's been a nice way to try out different places) and picked up a bag towards the end of their day. Our haul included: three ham and cheese croissants, one regular croissant and one glazed oat doughnut. Being a little lactose intolerant, I was worried about the quantity of cheese in the croissant but the ham they use is really quite nice and it's wasn't overly cheesy which proved to be good for me. I don't typically have savory croissants so I was curious how it would be but the sesame seeds were a nice touch and it wasn't odd in the slightest. Actually it reminded me of having a croissant breakfast sandwich which is why it worked. I believe the doughnut might have come from Doughnut Plant but I wasn't entirely sure of the sourcing. The texture of the oats was interesting and while I couldn't quite tell what type of glaze it was, I enjoyed it immensely. Would definitely come back to Madame Sousou for another TGTG order or to try out some of their other items! read more

I usually order hot chai lattes here, which have been consistently delicious every time I order them. I'll occasionally get iced chai if it's a warmer day, which is pretty good. I would skip the matcha if you prefer sweeter matcha lattes. It is served unsweetened unless you ask for syrup, which is an extra $0.50 charge. Overall a very cute and comfy cafe. I loved the intimate setting and artsy vibe at Madame Sou Sou. They offer a wide variety of high quality pastries, not the machine-made, heat it up kind at Starbucks. The staffs are friendly and helpful. I love that they offer teas in a pot. It's a luxury to sip my tea in the outdoor seating while enjoying some fresh air. Speaking of fresh air, that's the whole point of outdoor seating. Lately and for a few months now it's been a smoke joint where people gather or by themselves smoke in the outdoor seating area. I'd like Madame Sou Sou to more clear about their smoking rules and where is 25 ft away from the entrance. I now go to a different cafe where smoking is not an issue. I miss going to Madame Sou Sou. I grabbed coffee with my friend today from that place we always pass by. As soon as we walked in to order, the guy was speaking to someone in the kitchen, a lady in Spanish, which is fine, but they were yelling in Spanish. I didn't feel comfortable with whatever they were talking about, so I kindly asked for orange juice right away. He was still yelling, 'NO, SORRY, WE DON'T HAVE ANY.' We grabbed our stuff to go, sat down for a little bit, and then left. They need professionals to work there. I really don't know how the manager allowed those things in there. Unlike the countless Starbucks clones out there, this little cafe looks NOTHING like a Starbucks in the best possible sense: they have decorative art over all the walls, INCLUDING the restroom walls. I have been coming to this little coffee shop religiously since it opened 8 years ago. And since my initial review a Morroccan (Egyptian?) gentleman has taken over ownership and it has gotten even better! Two things make this place stand out from the rest: 1. The carrot cake is by far the best I have tasted in the area. Fresh and home made by the owner's wife. It is simply amazing! 2. The service is always polite and efficient. The young guys that the owner hires are trained and vetted very well. They try to get you your drinks quickly and add the correct amount of small talk. None of this fake aloof hipster nonsense I have experienced all too often at Starbucks and at way too many other places. They have a quaint seating area right outside and utilize their Covid shed properly. I just hope the high praise doesn't attract the wrong crowd. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! read more
