First off, the location of this coffee shop is sweet and worth 4/5 stars alone! Located adjacent to the Shinola hotel and in the alley way with the Brakeman, the Lipp Bar, and Mister Dips and Twist. I love the chic, simple look of this shop which appeared to be adorned with local art work on the walls. The vibe here felt buzzy for sure. The menu offers your typical coffee shop menu but they had a few select teas which looked good ie. Jasmine, matcha and some treats which I did not try. The latte I got with nonfat milk was tasty and did the trick on a hot summer day to cool my tastebuds but it was not the best coffee I have ever had. The coffee here tasted similar to Birmingham's Roast- not as strong as I would normally like it but I typically like a strong coffee from Starbucks better. However if I was in the area, I would stop by as the location is convenient and there is a sitting area outside to catch some rays and catch up with friends! I do wish the drinks were a bigger size considering the prices. The hot drinks appear to only be offered in 12oz and the cool drinks only in 16oz. They've been doing they're (amazing) thing in Grand Rapids for a long time and tis great to see them bring their expertise to Detroit. Understanding chemistry, humidity, and technique, in an absolutely beautiful space, Madcap is my favourite coffee shop in the world. Arguably better at what they do than even Venetian or Seattle based shops, whether you get a special pour over, try their perfectly balanced espresso drinks (the mocha is amazing) or just enjoy the view of the people mover and alley mural from their beautiful space, this place keeps the high standards of the grand rapids location and beautifully translates them to Detroit. It's the best coffee you'll have in Michigan, and maybe the best in the world. A must go. read more

New modern vibes and some high quality coffee. Got a taste test of 3 different coffees since I wasn't sure what. It's pretty busy and considering the coffee is freshly made, it takes a bit to get your order. There's no food served so make sure you grab it else where. I wish there were places to sit while there because there is only seating on the side for a few people and the high tops there don't have seats. So it's not a place to really hang out and catch up with friends unless you don't mind standing for awhile, but this was during winter time. The space is huge with super high ceilings, the ability to order inside or walk up to the outdoor facing counter, and some patio seating in the little alley area to the side. Bonus - the staff is uber friendly. Now let's get to the coffee. I ordered a cappuccino, and it was great. My husband ordered a mocha, and it was *delicious*! I'm not normally a fan of mocha drinks, but this one was a total hit and I would order it again in the future. The consistency and flavour of the drinks were on point. I was visiting Detroit for the first time and wanted to grab a coffee on our way out of town since we had a 5 hour drive home. The store was beautiful and very clean. The Baristas were very friendly and my iced vanilla latte was amazing. This is where if I could give 100 star review, I would: I accidentally left my purse hanging on a table and walked right out. I got all the way home back to Chicago and realized I did not have my purse. Truly a bonehead move by me. I called and left a voicemail (the location was closed) and someone had called me back within 30 mins assuring me they had my purse. I was put in contact with a manager and I just received a confirmation my bag had been mailed out to me. Last October my partner and I went to Saugatuck and ate at an awesome little restaurant tucked away in the woods. They served a coffee with the most incredible flavor, and when we asked our server what kind of coffee it was, we were surprised to hear it was the 313 blend by a Grand Rapids based company called Madcap. Fast forward a couple months and finding out that Madcap had established a storefront in downtown Detroit, which is awesome to order buy their coffee there versus having to order and ship. The storefront is very clean and modern. The staff is always very friendly and knowledgeable. It's a great place to enjoy various blends of coffee while just taking in your surroundings. A really neat coffee shop in the heart of downtown Detroit. Located between a Nice little alleyway with a modern decor, this place deserves to be tried. I ordered their mocha latte and other than it being super expensive the drink itself tasted good. I only wish the latte had more of a coffee/espresso taste because it really was strong in a (delicious) chocolatey mocha taste. Which I don't mind it tasted super good. Might be an unpopular opinion, but I thought madcap was just 'okay'. There were limited options and I wasn't too fond of my drink. I did throw an extra star for their excellent customer service though. I originally wanted to try one of their holiday blends (Jackie Moon), but they were out and refunded me my $ + a new drink. I also thought that it was neat how they offered a coffee flight where you can sample different blends! After hearing many good things about Madcap, I was excited to finally have the chance to give it a try. It has a typical hipster coffee shop vibe, but the people who work there are super nice. The inside is all white and his a very clean aesthetic. There are only a few places to sit inside, most of the place has counters you can stand at. There are places to sit outside however since it's pretty cold here for half the year, I can imagine it may get crowded inside during winter. I came in with a couple of friends; two of us ordered the Cafe Miel, and the third ordered a cappuccino. The Cafe Miel was delicious, very light but very flavorful. I am definitely interested in coming back to explore more of the menu. read more

An easy walking stop in between Woodward and the Opera House.
