Rehab was her immediate future. It was Saturday and we had until Monday morning to make a decision on which rehab center we wanted to use. We ran home to grab some dinner then were planning on going back to the hospital for the evening. We weren't quite done eating when we were interrupted by the phone. It was the hospital. She was being discharged. My brain went into overdrive. When? Discharged to home? Am I hearing you correctly? Tonight? Right now? Are you even fricken' serious? What the hell are we supposed to do? How could the doctor even think this is going to have a good outcome? Is he fricken' insane? Nope. The doctor was sending her home on hospice. The hospital social worker had set us up with Hospice of N Alabama. She assured us that hospice would be at her house tonight. It was already 5pm. She wouldn't be home until 7-8 at the earliest. Nobody is going to come out tonight. It was Saturday for heaven's sake. OMG. We can't do this. Who in their fricken' right mind thinks this is alright? It is not. We're going to hurt her. True to their word, a hospice nurse showed up within an hour of us getting her home. It's a good thing, we were clueless. He assured us that hospice would be there to guide us and help us with her care. He told us that a hospice nurse would be there in the morning to get us situated. He said a bed would be delivered that night. What still sticks in my mind from that visit was that he told us that we'd be OK. I looked at him and thought "are you fricken' delusional? No, we're not going to be OK. How in the world are we going to be OK?"The next day, supplies such as Depends, absorbent pads and adult wipes showed up. More supplies would show up during the week. Even the Ensure that she needed was delivered to the door. More and more things just seemed to appear through thin air. We had need of nothing. Hospice was there to guide us as her health deteriorated. When a new issue arose, our nurse would come up with something. We could call anytime and if we needed someone to come to the house, sometimes only to reassure us, at 3am, they came. They provided an aide to bathe her. They even had a chaplain come by to pray with her, to pray with us. The best part was the music therapist who came every other week. When he came, our whole family was there. Even her infant great grandson. The therapist played mostly old hymns. While she couldn't put a sentence together and her voice was so weak that we had a hard time hearing her, when the music started, it was like someone flipped her switch to on. She belted out those songs. That hour, every two weeks, I think is what saved us. Eight months later, she passed from her earthly home to her eternal home. It's been nearly 2 years. Our memories of that awful 8 months are fading and being replaced by the happy memories that we had formed with her through the years. Her son now volunteers with Habitat. The baby is growing and is now a "big boy" at 3. I've begun writing short stories. Yes, there is still a little hole in our hearts, there always will be; but. we're moving on. That's what she'd want us to do. And, like the hospice nurse promised us that first night, we really are all OK.

A lot of your loved one's care has to do with you. Do you show up? Do you visit your loved one? I know not everyone can due to being remotely located. This facility loves my Mom and loves her well. They delight in getting her ready for a joyride (thanks Serea), and the staff are so engaged with mom they can't wait to tell my family and me what she's been up to (both good and bad). I have one of their fabulous nurses on text message and can get any information I need about Mom in an instant. They are so responsive and so loving. I highly recommend Grandview Gardens for your loved one's memory care needs and Redstone Village for assisted living. Some advice: be present if possible and be active in your loved one's care this goes a long way. Both Redstone Village proper and Grandview Gardens have kept mom happy and healthy for around 7 years! This facility is clean and updated and full of activities but If your loved one doesn't want to participate, they willingly go the extra mile to ensure their needs are met, for example, making sandwiches for mom who slept through dinner and didn't eat. This is the type of facility you do not dread visiting. Please consider Redstone Village. It is an entire life span facility from freestanding homes where you have a beautiful view and can drive your car or golf cart to dining or exercise or swimming facilities to assisted living again with beautiful views, to memory care with ample activities, including day trips to local strawberry picking and restaurants to hospice. Redstone Village is the real deal and my family and I are so grateful Mom is enjoying her 88th year on the planet here. My family have visited other facilities in Madison county and mom lived in one for about a year. Redstone Village eclipses all of them in terms of compassionate care, consistent rule following and generally loving what they do. Almost no personnel turnover. It was…read moresad to see a former friend leave Huntsville, but it took that move (because her family were patients of Dr. Toland) to open up some wiggle room in her practice to allow my husband and me a spot, under her care at, at the time, Baily Cove Family Physicians. I think I've been going there around 13 years, probably more. The Huntsville Hospital name change really did not impact my experience in any way. No problems getting appointments or changing appointments and her staff are *never* rude or anything but kind - in every dealing/appointment that I've had with them. Dr. Toland is the most compassionate, caring individual you will find. She really listens to you, she understands women's issues and concerns and "cuts you some slack"and is never judgmental. She understands if life gets in the way and precludes some of the better health practices that we all strive to adhere to and is so reasonable and kind. As far as appointments go, she runs on time probably 99% of the time. She goes over your bloodwork in painstaking detail and answers and explains thoroughly any questions you may have. Refills are easy to obtain and they always have the lab paperwork where it is supposed to be, in advance of any appointments. I'm not sick much, but when I am, she will try to work me in and the nursing staff are all kind and compassionate, too. I almost hate to "go on and on" about Dr. Toland, because I do not believe she is accepting new patients, don't quote me, I could be wrong. There are other doctors on the staff at HHPC, I've never seen anyone other than Dr. Toland, so I cannot comment on their care.
