i had the pleasure of volunteering at the country animal haven for a few weeks while being bored…read moreand unemployed in madison this winter. this place is an amazing no-kill, non-profit animal shelter. they provide a safe place for cats that are still waiting to find the perfect home. run completely by volunteers, this place is very well-kept, clean and organized. the cats have pretty much free run of the house and barn -- and only a few are kept in cages (the young kittens and the sick/ill-tempered). it is nice to see so many cats in one place with the freedom to roam as they please. also, i was amazed to see cats that got along so well with each other. the location is a bit off the beaten path, but it's well worth the visit. there are plenty of cats waiting to be adopted. also, i believe some of them are brought to petsmart and mounds to be showcased for adoption. in addition, if you have free time, lend a hand. volunteers are always appreciated! :)

These are volunteers who make it their mission to care for these animals. We try to get in a few times a year to help out. I should also say that we have received one cat from them who was in perfect health. And we had to surrender another cat that we found abandoned. Thank you for the work that you do!

Recently my dog has had some bloodwork issues - my vet asked if they could see the bloodwork from his neutering appt. to see if maybe the bloodwork is just normal for him(dog) however when I called Underdog to get the bloodwork they said they didn't do any-because we(dogs owners) didn't request it. This is something that should always be done and I am guessing the rescue place didn't want to pay for that therefore not important. My dogs life is important to me so If you take your dog or cat or whatever pet to this clinic - make sure you are asking the right questions - I personally wouldn't go here again. That test is to help find anything that might cause a problem during the operation. I would find another clinic.

Dr Kay comes to your home for exams, vaccinations, medications, etc. I cannot overstate the convenience factor as well as the increased comfort for our pets who do not get freaked out by traveling to a bricks and mortar veterinary clinic. We have a long history with Dr. Kay from when she worked at Companion Animal Hospital and she is always exemplary. We have used her for cats as well as dogs and I've always been happy with her services. She is very compassionate and nonjudgmental. We especially appreciated the in-home euthanasia option for a very sick cat. That made a very sad and stressful situation a little bit easier. I went here three years ago and now I have two cats from DCHS and I spend all my money on spoiling them. We have our two sweet, angel fur babies AKA children from DCHS and now we are crazy cat people. The feline counselors and adoption volunteers we worked with on both adoption occasions were amazing. They did very thorough intakes of our lives and wants/needs and helped match us to our fuzzballs. On both occasions, the adoption counselors recommended a cat that wasn't originally on our list "to see" and both ended up going home with us and being our perfect matches. The shelter itself is clean, well-maintained and full of fabulous people who care about animals and their humans. They adopt out hundreds of animals each week and serve a bunch of remote locations too. They have birds, small critters and dogs and cats. They also have a super cool wildlife rescue program that works with bats, owls, turtles and all kinds of Wisconsin wild creatures. They do amazing work and they only humanely euthanize an animal if it will not survive otherwise. They don't put down animals if they have too many, in fact this is a shelter that sends caravans to rescue animals from other states and shelters that would kill them. They have great veterinary teams and health consultations for new adopters. It would be an understatement to say that DCHS has changed my life. Please see ample photos of my photogenic cats.

I've read books, I'm always learning about cat history, behavior, quirks, etc. People know me as the crazy cat lady and I am a hovercraft when it comes to my cat's health. When we first adopted a cat in 2016, we lived off Gammon, so A Breed Apart just made sense. The doctors were kind and friendly. Then we got a kitten in 2017 and put both the cats on ASPCA insurance just in case. Both were adopted from shelters, so they were spayed already, but the staff at ABA has always helped us with vaccinations, check ups, strange bouts of vomiting and micro chipping. Dr. Meyers and Dr. Vanderloo are our favorites along with Julie and Chris our usual vet techs. Then in 2019, we ended up with a kitten by accident and despite having moved across town to central/East Madison, you bet we still make the drive to our vets at A Breed Apart. We had to go through the spaying process for the first time this past December and I was terrified. The vet techs here are just awesome and they dealt with my crazy mom nerves and helped calm both me and our kitten. They took her all day and did the surgery, called me and only ~$210 later, I had a fixed kitty. We came back 10 days later for stitch removal for free -- I was surprised at how easy they made the whole thing. Then there was a rough week when our first born was diagnosed with kidney issues/renal disease. I was crushed and terrified to hear that one of our kids was sick and not doing well. Dr. Vanderloo was so awesome about everything -- she had a great attitude and kept us (me) calm. She helped us put our cat on specialty prescription food and has extended our cat's life for sure. We are proud to be an ABA family and will continue to be as long as we live in Madison.

I took my sweet boxer Charlee here for the past 3 years and the care she received from day one was beyond incredible. While Charlee was easy to love, she had a lot of medical needs and the entire team was there not just to treat her, but to love and care for her as if she were their own. The entire team was incredible throughout and provided wonderful service, but a very special thanks and recommendation to Dr. Kate Waushabaugh and Georgia who went above and beyond for Charlee, and myself. Charlee was in the best hands...from routine care, emergencies and up to the point to when she fell asleep in this world. I trusted their care, their opinion, their service. Their primary goal is to give the best care possible and so it never felt transactional, insensitive or for profit. Dr. Kate spent countless hours with me talking, researching and extending kindness that I'm sure I can't ever repay just to give Charlee the best possible care - however we got there. Even when it came time to say goodbye, Dr. Kate stayed with us, and then walked us out without ever blinking an eye about the details. That kind of peace of mind she provided is priceless. I can't say the same for other places in the area, hence this review. There is no other place I would have trusted more with my most loved pet , and will continue to do so in the future as well. They…read moreare incredibly knowledgeable, have state of the art medical facilities, and I think are the best diagnosticians (I've heard this from other local vets too). The staff are friendly and professional. The vets take their time with you and will explain procedures/care as much as you would like. I do all of my routine exams with CCC. As others have mentioned, this very high level of care comes at a price. The CCC is more expensive than other local vets that I've used. It's like taking your Jaguar to a certified Jaguar dealer who works only on Jag's versus taking your precious car to a quick service place with technicians who only see Jag's once in a while. I do take my cats to another vet for some procedures because of cost; I'm not a wealthy man. However if money weren't a notable concern for me, I would use CCC exclusively.

The usual inventory of pet supplies and aquarium fish. Sure you might get a part time person who isn't very knowledgeable once in awhile but generally well trained staff who love animals. Don't believe those earlier posts about cleanliness and poor hamsters up for adoption. That's not the way it is here. Go see for yourself and clear your head playing with some kittens!

I am reaching out because my family purchased a frenchie from MadCity Frenchies…read more Our MadCity Frenchie (purchased on Sept. 23, 2023) has been diagnosed with a portosystemic liver shunt. She requires medicine three times a day, costly specialized vegetarian diet prescription food, regular bile acid tests, and due to her varying levels of physical comfort, must be kept away from our other french bulldog. Additionally, we have to determine whether to risk spay surgery due to the puppy's difficulty in processing medicine due to her liver issue. We are now having her evaluated for hip issues... at nine months... The current prognosis is a life of approx. three years. It could be more, it could be less without costly surgery (3,000-12,000) that is risky in and of itself-and may not help our little one. We requested a refund (without asking for reimbursement of medical expenses we have already incurred.)We offered to give her the dog back as part of the refund process... we outlined the cost of her prescription food, and informed her of how her eyes are bloodshot because the new food isn't working that great. We basically spent 4,000 with thousands to come to provide hospice care for a puppy. She is unwilling to refund us. There is no way we would ever take or purchase a dog from this person. We are moving forward with our attorney, and MadCity Frenchies are aware of it. They have seen the vet(s) records (several vets from the clinic).... We wish we had seen the warning signs... asking to pay via her personal Venmo account rather than her business one. Not allowing buyers to see the dogs in-person as part of the selection process. There were more... red flags, no online reviews, etc.. but we fell in love with a puppy. I wish I had known... the bills, the stress, the emotional weight, and the energy of keeping these two dogs separate. We've already been reassured that the contract isn't tenable. I just hope others do not have to go though what we are going through. Best of luck on your journey to find a healthy frenchie.. Feel free to ask questions.
