From the start, it was clear how much the staff truly cares for every animal that comes through their doors. They made sure Rudie, then called Dana, was healthy, loved, and ready for her forever home. These pics are from the day we drove from Chicago to Madison to bring her home. Over the years, we came to understand what people mean when they say, "who rescued who." Rudie brought more love, laughter, and comfort into our lives than we could ever have imagined. We're deeply grateful for the joy she gave us and for the compassion this shelter shows every single day. We lost Rudie last month, and while our hearts are heavy, we're endlessly thankful for the seven beautiful years we shared. She was family in every sense, and that's because this shelter gave her such a strong start. The love, care, and respect they show every animal make all the difference. I showed up that day and they asked me about preferences then brought out a super cute puppy (I have since named her Vivian!) for me to meet. I asked lots of questions and the person working with me answered them easily, which felt good to me because it indicated they know the dogs at their shelter and are prepared with the information potential adopters need. I spent time with Vivian and she was confident and cuddly, and after bringing my first dog to meet her and seeing them interact positively, I said I was ready for the next steps. I adopted her and she's been super sweet and cuddly, what a lovely pup :)

I went here three years ago and now I have two cats from DCHS and I spend all my money on spoiling them. We have our two sweet, angel fur babies AKA children from DCHS and now we are crazy cat people. The feline counselors and adoption volunteers we worked with on both adoption occasions were amazing. They did very thorough intakes of our lives and wants/needs and helped match us to our fuzzballs. On both occasions, the adoption counselors recommended a cat that wasn't originally on our list "to see" and both ended up going home with us and being our perfect matches. The shelter itself is clean, well-maintained and full of fabulous people who care about animals and their humans. They adopt out hundreds of animals each week and serve a bunch of remote locations too. They have birds, small critters and dogs and cats. They also have a super cool wildlife rescue program that works with bats, owls, turtles and all kinds of Wisconsin wild creatures. They do amazing work and they only humanely euthanize an animal if it will not survive otherwise. They don't put down animals if they have too many, in fact this is a shelter that sends caravans to rescue animals from other states and shelters that would kill them. They have great veterinary teams and health consultations for new adopters. It would be an understatement to say that DCHS has changed my life. Please see ample photos of my photogenic cats.

i had the pleasure of volunteering at the country animal haven for a few weeks while being bored…read moreand unemployed in madison this winter. this place is an amazing no-kill, non-profit animal shelter. they provide a safe place for cats that are still waiting to find the perfect home. run completely by volunteers, this place is very well-kept, clean and organized. the cats have pretty much free run of the house and barn -- and only a few are kept in cages (the young kittens and the sick/ill-tempered). it is nice to see so many cats in one place with the freedom to roam as they please. also, i was amazed to see cats that got along so well with each other. the location is a bit off the beaten path, but it's well worth the visit. there are plenty of cats waiting to be adopted. also, i believe some of them are brought to petsmart and mounds to be showcased for adoption. in addition, if you have free time, lend a hand. volunteers are always appreciated! :)

These are volunteers who make it their mission to care for these animals. We try to get in a few times a year to help out. Consider Dane County Friends of Ferals if you are contemplating adopting a cat…read more When the fateful decision was made to balance the feline - canine ratio at Casa de Waunakee, we elected to adopt a cat through Dane County Friends of Ferals. They hold a cat fair at MadCat Pet Supplies on Mineral Point Road every Saturday afternoon and that's where we first met our fury little bundle of love. As potential first time cat owners, we had a lot of the questions and the DCFoF volunteers did a great job of fielding those questions. After narrowing down the list to a couple of finalists, the DCFoF staff facilitated a visit to the cat's foster home so the whole family could interact with our potential choice. The foster parent was extremely helpful and gave us lots of tips for introducing a new cat to our family dog. I thought that the foster parent did a great job of helping the cat adapt from living in the wild to becoming a house cat. The adoption process took a couple of weeks. There was a long questionnaire to complete which DCFoF uses to screen applicants. Several days after I submitted the completed application, someone from DCFoF contacted me and we discussed the potential adoption. They also provided me with a list of the items I would need to purchase prior to adopting the cat. Once the adoption was approved, we picked up our new cat from the foster parent and the rest is history. We've been extremely pleased with the addition of Nyla to our family! The cost of the adoption was only $100, which covered the cost of spaying our cat. There are lots of options for getting a cat in the Madison area - you should consider Dane County Friends of Ferals as one of those options.

About 4 years ago I took my dog to this clinic to be neutered - he is a rescue and this was the…read moreclinic the rescue company suggested. Recently my dog has had some bloodwork issues - my vet asked if they could see the bloodwork from his neutering appt. to see if maybe the bloodwork is just normal for him(dog) however when I called Underdog to get the bloodwork they said they didn't do any-because we(dogs owners) didn't request it. This is something that should always be done and I am guessing the rescue place didn't want to pay for that therefore not important. My dogs life is important to me so If you take your dog or cat or whatever pet to this clinic - make sure you are asking the right questions - I personally wouldn't go here again. That test is to help find anything that might cause a problem during the operation. I would find another clinic.

They have a customer rewards program where you buy a specific amount of something and get one free so I choose to shop there just for that. I finally got to my free bag of very expensive dog food and when I went in to get the food they tell me that the deal expires if you don't use it right away so I lost out on my free bag. The dog was a rare breed of dog, and they could tell she was not doing well in the selter environment. We contacted them immediately and told them we could help. I offered to take the dog into my home as a foster. The staff here was extremely friendly. By the next day I was able to make plans via email to go and pick her up. I drove the 2 hours to Portage to get her. When I got there the staff was again extrememly friendly, and it was easy to tell they all love the animals and work hard. If you are looking to add a new pet to your family. Make sure you check out the Columbia County Humane Society! They are a wonderful group of people helping the local animals.
