Madison Cellars is an interesting place! My friend and I came here after dining at Cactus seeing it was open. We went down a short flight of stairs and entered what genuinely felt like a cellar. I've never been to a store with "cellar" in the name that actually felt like a cellar but this was it - dusty, cool, and dim and all sorts of filled with all kinds of wine! The variety of the wine was astounding, the inventory diverse, and the display intriguing. Fred is an amusing owner as he was quite casual and nonchalant. I swear 75% of the time we asked about an interesting looking bottle Fred's response was he wasn't sure about it because he was only convinced to buy it due to a charming and beautiful saleswoman. After awhile Fred commented we had an eye for the unusual with a small chuckle. I can't help that I'm drawn to the funkiest looking wine bottles and this store has no shortage! Fred is also cautious. High on a shelf, covered in dust with cobwebs stretching from it we saw a particular bottle of champagne. A bottle that while inexpensive is exceedingly hard to get a hold of since no one local stocks it and most wine companies can't get an order from France. It didn't have a clear year on it but the bottle wrapping is distinct and we wanted it! Fred wasn't so sure about that. He couldn't recall when he purchased it. Said he only recently stumbled across it. Wasn't sure if it would be as bubbly or the quality. He cautioned us against it but said he'd sell it to us if we insisted but buyer beware. I appreciated that because it was very thoughtful! We bought our champagne and went home. The champagne was delicious. Every bit as good as I recall it being from four years ago. Great selection? Check Friendly service? Check Acceptable prices? Double check. This is the place that I go to when I'm having a dinner party or some other function that requires multiple bottles of decent to good wine. I quite enjoy the fact that I can walk out of this store with four pretty damned good bottles of wine, and only a small dent to my pocketbook. The selection is wonderful, and when I'm having Wino's block (similar to writer's block, but where my wine picking senses are affected), Fredrick is always glad to help pick the wine for the occasion. On top of everything, he keeps the store at a good temperature and light level for the wine. AND you can get cups for when you're planning on enjoying a bottle of Riesling on the beach...er...at "home"...during the summer. So, why not five stars? Do I have better wine shops that I know of? Am I just being mean? No no no, none of that. This place is spot on, but the one issue is a: when Fredrick isn't there, the people who cover aren't as well versed in the wine (but that's okay, not everyone is Fred, and he does deserve a break from time to time) and b: as mentioned earlier, sometimes it can take awhile to get Fred because he's busy with another customer. That aside, I've been that other customer, so I can't really complain. Fredrick is great to chat with, and not just about wine, but travel, geopolitics, local politics, religion...he's very smart, and thoughtful, and I greatly appreciate that. Fred really does rock! I had a five course meal planned out for mothers day, sent my sister in with a list of the dishes i was making and he perfectly paired it for me. A few of teh wines i would never have chosen myself so it was great to have his point of view. His prices are reasonable and his selection is actually quite vast. His knowledge though is what i'm usually after, pick his brain and you will not be disatisfied. He has a thorough knowledge of wines and wine regions not to mention grapes and other such things wine oriented. I highly recomend this place for your special occaision that requires wine of any kind. read more

This is always one of my favorite places to go, I just wish I got over to Madison Park more often. The owner Fred knows wayyy to much about wine and he will make sure you get something that is right for the occasion you are shopping for. In my case it was my birthday and we got some fantastic Prosecco. I try to make a point to do my special occasion wine shopping here, also its nice to support small business vs. getting wine at Met Market or some big chain store. read more

An independent business at its best! Stumbled upon this store during a walk in Madison Park. Thinking we need some wine for the home-cooked meal, I went down to check out the shop. Like some of the other reviewers, Fred is a gem. Besides his knowledge of wine, it is just so wonderful to deal with someone who is a decent human being. We picked up the perfect wine to go with our meal and with the extra money left over, chose an extra bottle as a thank-you to my hosts. No, it's not a come-in-and-grab-a-bottle-in-five-minute shop, but there are plenty of those out there. I'm way over due to go see Fred. I was a regular here for many years. And I have to say, from my first trip in, it felt like I had been coming there for a long time. Fred knows wine. He gives very good, honest opinions. He tells me what a wine tastes like to him, and he was always good about knowing what I liked. Amazing selection! Fun interior. Warm and personal attention given to each customer from the owner/friendly neighbor (if you live in Madison Park). Many wine sellers are either low grade, kitsch design selling 2 buck chuck. NOT THIS PLACE! First off, you really do feel like you are in a cellar. And the wine selection may not be as large as say, Trader Joe's, but it's selection makes the others look so lower class. You really dont know where to start when you come in here. Its overwhelming seeing such foreign and expensive labels. Fortunately, the owner is very knowledgable and ready to advise. Just tell him why you are buying the bottle and for what occasion and he will give you a few options and they are good. What more can you ask for than to have a personal shopper at a wine shop? I wouldn't write a bad review of a place if I felt like it would hurt their business. That being said, I stood in here for nearly 15 minutes while the clerk / owner? chatted away with a customer who was buying a case of wine. When I finally did get a little attention, it was not-so-nice. Thsi seems like the type of store that has plenty of regular customers who take care of the bills for them, and paying attention to passersby is not on the top of the list. Which is fine - but it's not a place I'll be browsing in again. read more

Don't let the fact that It's located one of the higher end neighborhoods in Seattle, combined with the fact that it's a really small "boutique" fool you - Fred said finalizes in inexpensive, high quality wines, for real people who are doin to drink the wine they buy instead of cellering it.
