Well hello there, Harriman State Park. You were quite surprising, but I'm so glad we're friends…read morenow! I was in this part of Idaho on a long weekend trip, and though there are some incredible national parks within a few hours of driving distance, we also wanted to take in some of the local sights and hikes, and Harriman happened to be on the list. We loaded up a picnic and made our way there. I wasn't expecting it to be as large as it is, but when you drive in you get a sense for it. We stopped at the kiosk to pay our $5 entrance fee, and there are maps all over with a bit of info. I was with some veterans of the park, so we knew to head to the picnic area where there was a lot of parking and then a small system of walkways with lots of picnic tables. We selected ours, dug in, and enjoyed a lovely lunch with sandwiches, apples, and all the things you should pack when going out for the day. We didn't have as much time as we thought we would, so we were looking to take a short hike when the nice rangers pointed us to a small loop. The signage here is pretty great, and each map tells you which signpost you are standing at, and then you find its corresponding number on the map. We walked along a river, through the historic buildings (and cabins for rent, apparently) which were all closed due to pandemic concerns, and then cut back along the river to the lakeshore. The views here of the water were awesome, and we spent a few moments on the bridge getting great photos. It's a nice combo of history, nature, trees, well-defined paths, and lots of waterfowl and animals. It's the kind of place you can kind of choose your own adventure and do what you want. I wish we would have had more time to do all the hiking, but our little loop was really quite satisfying.

There is simply nothing like it around. I was a solo traveler (33F) from NY never having been to MT or out west - reading reviews online I liked that the ranch didn't seem to be like a "mill" and looked like more of an individualized experience & boy was everyone right. I was immediately put at ease before I even booked when I called the ranch and Melissa spoke with me right away answering all of my questions - she is extremely knowledgeable, responsive & informative. Upon booking she sent a bunch of information for packing/activities/etc. - there were absolutely no surprises and I felt very prepared for the trip & of what to expect - if you miss something it's because you didn't read it carefully & that's on you! My cabin immediately felt like home - it was cozy, clean, and beautifully decorated. There is so much charm to the ranch. Every meal was better than the next. Melissa, Kurt, & the wranglers are the real deal - they know the country better than the back of their hand & I was so impressed by them all. Having never experienced this kind of country I quickly went from being apprehensive to eager to go out every day and explore simply because of how at ease the wranglers made me feel. Kurt & Melissa have a real talent for reading horses & people and paired everyone PERFECTLY with their horses for the week as well as the group I rode with. I have never seen better cared for/happier horses in all my years of riding - I don't even want to say my horse's name here (& I won't) because I selfishly want her for the next time I go but she was really just such a great horse. There are not enough words or space in this review to say how much I loved this ranch and how much I appreciated the kindness and warmth Melissa, Kurt, their 2 boys, the guests, animals, and the entire staff of the CWR showed me. This place will forever hold a special place in my heart & I look forward to coming back as many times as I can!!

Our family of 4 (parents and two 20-something's) booked an end-of-season trip to Yellowstone, and…read moreincluded an overnight rafting trip, and a horseback ride through the Flying Pig - we had a blast! Horsebackriding was fun up at Hells'-a-Roaring Ranch above Gardiner. The horses were all steady and kind, and the views were incredible. Our guide Mariette, was fun and had lots of experience and information about the area. The crew there is all friendly and helpful, and we picked a great day to do it for weather and visibility. It was walking (no trotting) only, but there was a large group, so it was understandable. The next day we embarked on our River camping trip. Jaxon from Flying Pig was our rafting guide, and incredible cook- he really knows the river and it was just the 4 of us, so we felt really spoiled having him all to ourselves. He was a wealth of knowledge about the park, the birds and the river itself. We even stopped to look for petrified wood at the inlet of a river while we ate our lunches. The overnight on the river was fun and rustic, a lovely campfire, hot showers (outdoor!), clean regular bathrooms, and large tent-cabins. The company provides cotton sleeping bag liners, but just a tip: Had i known that, i would have brought my own silk one! We played Corn-hole on the beach while Jax fired up the really amazing steak dinner. After breakfast the next morning, we had a leisurely float back, and saw quite a few eagles along the way. We really enjoyed our vacation to Yellowstone and The Flying Pig was a big part of that. Very helpful and great communication with the staff. Highly recommended.

Our group of 6 were all new to rafting. We had the best time ever!! Preston (our guide) set the bar…read morecrazy high for any future rafting trips, he was so fun and knowledgeable (he taught us all about rivers, wildlife, and other local attractions)! If we had more time we would have booked another full day trip and requested Preston just so we could hang out with him again. This experience turned us all into rafting aficionados! As an added bonus, we got to see a bald eagle take flight from a tree so that was cool too. Preston and our raft day made our entire Yellowstone Trip! You should ask your raft guide "Can pigs fly?" and see what happens! The only thing I wish I would've known (which I could've if I had called probably lol) is there is a bit of a tough walk down to get into the boats- but honestly 5 mins into the trip we forgot all about the trek because we were having such a great time. I'd recommend wearing all swim material clothes so that you dry quickly because even on a warm day the water can be chilly and the wind nippy. Having shorts/pants that aren't swim material will keep you cold and wet (dry fit doesn't work the same as swim material lol). If you don't have water shoes they have them available for you to borrow and they also had neoprene/wet suits but we didn't use them.
