No stars. They had our laptop for a week with prepay $57. Called multiple times and finally a tech said - the battery is bad. We told him the battery is new and was charging fine at home. Oh, then it's the motherboard. Did they even diagnose? Lost our trust right there. Said they would call the next day with price. Did not call. Our largely trouble free desktop computer running Window XP for the past 12 years was having start up issues. I brought the computer in and met Matt and described the problem. Matt said it could be the motherboard and/or the drive. I protested and told him the computer had no inconsistencies on the drive, no malware, no viruses. He replied "you are talking about psychotherapy and the patient needs a liver transplant." Immediately I appreciated his wry dry humor. I shared with him a parts build I had put together for a custom computer which we wanted to go forward with in September of 2017. For now we wanted a fix to tide us over until then. He warned if it was determined the problem was the motherboard there was no solution for us; he could not get another since ours was 8 generations old; not even an OEM version. The next day he called with devastating news. It indeed was the motherboard. He sent via email pictures of four blown capacitors on the board. At that point I was very fearful that we would lose all our data despite having it all backed up onto an external Western Digital drive via Acronis. I shared that our most important desire was to save all personal documents from each of our (my wife and I) respective profiles and twelve years of music on iTunes. I had just spoken with a support technician at Apple who told me since our version of iTunes was old, the music could not be downloaded into their newest version. Matt said that would depend on the condition of the hard drive, something he would know after examining it. He determined that the surface of the drive was damaged but the hardware supporting the drive was intact. He observed it was a good thing we brought it in since he surmised there was about seven days use out of it left. He did not guarantee he could do what we asked but felt confident he could. My parts list totaled $2,900. Matt went over each component and made recommendations for changes. When we were done my parts list was reduced to $2,100. The price reduction did not represent compromised performance; quite the contrary. With the graphics card I had originally listed Matt said it needs to run at 70 to 80 percent of capacity and if I were not using it in that manner I would not see the benefit whereas I would see MORE performance out of a card that cost less but was more accurately matched for intended use; horses for courses, and so it went with each part including the case. Matts reasoning was so clear it inspired confidence. I pulled my parts from Parts Picker. As I was "building" the computer with each addition of a part the site had a pop up that said "there are no incompatibilities" and continued to say so until the end. Matt said he did see where based on his experience there could be some parts that did not play well with one another. He agreed that the Corsair Vengeance series that was recommended to me over the higher level Corsair Domination Series was less troublesome. I told him that my goal was stability and at the same time although we are not gamers, we wanted a machine that was ultra-fast. He did what is called "active listening" and recommended a top of the line component that would meet those needs. HAPPY ENDING. Matt was able to rescue all of our personal documents and our iTunes library put into the latest version; a Miracle and we are so grateful. I knew he was not using hyperbole when he said "you will feel as if you have gone from a Model T to the Jetsons." Experiencing the truth of what he said was something else entirely. Per my request he installed the ESET Internet Security software that I purchased and brought to him. He also installed Microsoft Office Home and Business 2016 as well as Windows 10 Home 64 bit. Matt shared in our excitement and it was palpable. There is something special to be said when someone is excited about building something for you; good energy going into the product. All the above is a very long winded way of describing someone who is adept at what he does and at the same time able to communicate what he does effectively, honestly and compassionately; a rare trifecta of skill sets in any business but especially in the world of technology. That Matt cared about us as people was evident at every point along the way. By that I mean he did not see us as customers only; someone to add to the profit margin. For all intents and purposes, Matt IS Madison Geeks. If he went elsewhere we would follow him. Kahlal Cunningham, CEO of Madison Geeks would do well to make Matt a partner. If we had not had the conversations we had with Matt and the trust he established with us, a $3,000 custom built computer would never have been built. Had we not had the numerous consultative conversations no work order would have been placed with Madison Geeks; it goes without saying that building a custom computer is not the same as putting money in a candy machine and out comes the candy bar. read more

Stepping into a computer repair store is already fraught with fear because people recognize they are ill equipped to discern the truth of what they are being told; very similar to the new car buying experience. The last thing they need to encounter is patronizing and condescending personnel during a time when they are already despondent over the near death of their everyday tool and the costs they are soon incur. Matt is none of those things. He is honest to a fault. People have intuition and can differentiate compassion when it is truly offered versus a person who exudes policies, practices and procedures while lacking the qualities of empathy. The qualities I have described cannot be taught; they are innate; either you possess them or you do not and Matt definitely does have them. Thank you Matt you truly rescued us. So I came in on a Saturday 3 weeks ago, looking for a part (basically a CPU speaker) to diagnose what's wrong with my custom PC. Sadly, this place was closed, and as I was about to leave, someone stopped me and asked if I was looking for Madison Geeks (this was KC). I told him what I was looking for and he was able to find it right away. However, I'm rating my experience as 5 stars since not only did he find what I needed, we chatted a bit afterwards and showed me how to use it by showing me a computer he was fixing that used the part. In addition, I told him about my general problem, that my computer won't boot, and he was able to diagnose the problem with just a face-to-face conversation. He gave me troubleshooting tips, which was very helpful. To be honest, his advice was probably worth more than the speaker I bought. All in all, I know Madison Geeks have great employees and I'll be sure to contact them if I ever need computer help! read more

I called for my mother who is in a senior citizen independent living facility. Her computer kept shutting down. Found out not the computer problem, but a system problem at the center. All seniors have their computers into same router and causes slowing and shut down. Since it wasn't a computer problem, and even though he had a technician come to the apartment, he didn't charge us because he just wants us to use him in the future. He is excellent. He even offered to have the senior living administrator call them and they would walk him through getting the system rebooted. read more

The star rating is only for the admin assistant, who was courteous and friendly. The Techs on the other had were not very helpful. I dropped off a laptop to have the video cable replaced on a Wednesday. Called on Friday for a status and informed the part was ordered and should arrive by 3pm. Tech said he would call me back with a status update. No call back received was received. Called on the following Monday and the same thing happened and again no call back. And again on following Wednesday. Went to the store on Friday and personally spoke with Tech, who said the exact same thing, order should arrive by 3pm. I informed him that I will be picking up laptop on Tuesday fixed or not. Called on Monday for status and again with same story and no call back. Picked up laptop on Tuesday and it had not been taken apart. Would not recommend. read more

I really, really, really wish I would have read reviews on here before I went to Madison Geeks for service and purchasing a new computer. I've had the same experiences as several other people. We paid for a computer a month ago they said it would be ready in a week-week in a half. And we still have no computer. They say they'll call and they dont. We have not gotten one call from them, it is always us calling them. We've been calling and calling, half the time no one answers and we have to keep hounding and calling them. I was on hold for close to 10 min today trying to talk to a supervisor and he was busy with another customer and guy said he'd call me back, he didn't. The guy on the phone said he had no idea where the computer was because he didnt work on it??? Do they not keep records, documents; why is someone answering the phone who cant help. I get if its not ready exactly on time by a few days but almost a month now?? I called one week ago and the guys said it would be ready by the latest today. My Husband called on Friday (its Monday now) that guy said it would be ready as well. No one has called us its been over a month now since we paid for a product and nothing. Any place else I could've had a computer within days if the day of. We needed data transfered from an old computer so that is why we choose Madison Geeks but I am realizing that was a huge mistake. I guess I will keep calling and calling until I get a computer or my money back. I am seriously considering contacting the Better Business Bureau; you cannot take someones money and promise them a product within a certain amount of time and then not provide customer service, I might have gotten one slight apology for what is going on, however todays phone call was unacceptable and noting how upset I was no one called me back as promised. DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE. If I could have, I would give them ZERO stars. Paid for them $50 to figure it out why my computer would not start up. They told me I needed a new hard drive which would be $468 with the requisite cloning and swapping it out). Went to Best Buy for a second opinion. It did NOT need a hard drive. Best Buy checked and said it was working at an acceptable speed/level. It just needed some minor work and cost about $60.00. Contacted Madison Geeks management and they defended their tech's assessment and refused to refund my $50 saying it was just a matter of time til my hard drive went out. It has been 1 1\2 years and my hard driving is going strong. The only explanation I can come up with WHY is that maybe the tech needed to bump up his numbers to prove his value so he made that up...? IF SO, HE IS A THIEF AND THE MANAGEMENT AIDED AND ABETTED IN THE THEFT. read more

The first time I had a chance to buy something from Madison Geeks was back in December 2012. A bit about my background. I have worked as a Software Developer for couple years now and was new in town back in fall of 2012. If someone claims to be a 'geek', I consider myself well qualified to evaluate their claim. So, I was new in town and was looking to build myself a Gaming PC (read: a high-end system that's a beast in raw computational power as well). I had been doing my own research and was pretty sure about what I wanted in terms of components. But since this wasn't a cheap DIY project that I was trying to complete, I wanted the parts to be put together by people that could claim: "This ain't my first rodeo". Lee (the tech that handles higher end systems) was very knowledgeable about his stuff. So was Kahlal. They were able to verify facts that I had earlier researched. I wanted to be included in the process and Kahlal offered me to actually come and look at the new shinning black CM HAF 912mid - tower case the rig was put together. The parts were put in the most professional way with zero protruding wires and clean internal layout to facilitate maximum air flow. And they only charged me 1.5 hours labour even though It is pretty standard to charge two or more hours for such services. Since I was new in town, I didn't have a mode of transportation yet. Not only did I receive everything assembled in time, Kahlal offered me to personally drop me at my place. They did not just 'sell' me a Gaming Tower, they earned my business. I've been their customer ever since. Fast forward a couple years, I was trying to buy a new Dell Ultrabook since two weeks now and their expertise with being able to get the best deal proved invaluable again. But for the sake of brevity, that's a story for some other time. On a scale of A+ to F, They have a BBB rating of A+. I had my computer serviced (or attempted to) earlier this fall from Madison Geeks, and I don't know if I've ever regretted a decision more in my life. They were nothing but helpful on the phone when I called to inquire about the services they offered, and when I brought the PC in they said it would be done on the Friday of that week. "Great!" I thought. Friday came, and with no phone call from MG I gave them a ring, only be told that it wasn't ready yet. Fine, the next week would still be a quicker turn-around than I expected. Next week comes, and still no phone call from MG. Every time I would try to call them, they'd talk in circles about how the tech who was working on it wasn't there, or they didn't know which computer was mine and had to talk with a manager. Apparently they don't label any computers, keep track of the work, or as it turns out, DO THE WORK AT ALL! It was always some BS that would result in a promise to return my phone call in ten minutes or less. In the MONTH that they ended up having my computer, I never received a single phone call from them. Not one. It was always me having to check up on them like a father making sure the kids are doing their homework. After running me around in circles with their stories and excuses for 4 weeks (3.5 weeks longer than they had promised), I finally got ahold of someone who seemed to have a relatively sound idea of what was going on in the shop. Apparently, nobody had even touched my computer in the entire time it had been there, despite me being told multiple times it was "being worked on" or "almost done". He told me I could pick it up that Friday. On Friday I went to MG to pick up my computer, and had to describe the exact make, model and physical description of my PC to the employee (who could not have been more apathetic about her job). It seems that they keep absolutely zero record of the work they do, or what PC belongs to what person. I can only imagine what the work room of the shop looks like. On top of dealing with all of this chaos and not having my computer for an entire month, the employee I worked with in the shop was disrespectful and lazy, not like I should really have expected anything more.. I was astounded that after receiving the worst service I've ever gotten in the history of my shopping experience, there were no apologies, no offers for reconciliation, just a "thanks, come again". Never. Ever. Again. Save your time, your heart ache, and your phone bill. Go somewhere (anywhere) else. read more

I've received one update, and only after sending an email demanding an update. Two weeks since then, and nothing. Repeat after me, Geeks: "That didn't work, we're trying something new" IS AN UPDATE. It takes 60 seconds to convey and it is totally worth it. OK, final report. I got my computer back many weeks later, completely dead and unsalvagable. MG did give me an external hard drive with my data so at least I have access to my stuff, but the computer will never work again. During the multiple MONTHS (Feb-May 2014) my computer was with them, nobody from MG called me. Seriously, not once. When I complained I did get an email from the owner excusing the lack of communication because, after all, he would rather have his people working on computers than wasting time communicating with pesky customers. At one point I told them I was coming to pick up my computer and they said I couldn't because it was in Illinois. Yes, that's right, they SENT MY COMPUTER TO ILLINOIS without my knowledge or permission. They later sent my computer to Dell, again, without my knowledge or permission. I have a long string of emails from the owner promising communication: fix options, pricing, timelines, etc, but never delivering. Then they complained that I had written a bad review on Yelp and asked me to change it. "...we are not looking to take a bad review for a lemon..." My original review was entirely about the poor customer service, not the lack of fix, so... they didn't even read it before asking me to change it. Me: What's up with my laptop? Him [two weeks later]: We're working on it hang in there! Me [the next day]: Great, when can I expect to hear back? Him [two weeks later]: Any day now. It's got major problems. I'm sure you can understand we don't want our techs wasting time calling customers back. Me[same day]: What's going on now? I called today and nobody knew anything. Him [two weeks later]: Your computer is causing us a lot of problems. Give us a day and we'll get you some options. Me[three days later]: What are my options, and why haven't you called to tell me about them? I called two days ago and nobody knew anything. Him [two weeks later]: Your laptop is really causing us a lot of problems and you should be grateful that we're working on it. In Illinois. Me: How about those options and the timeline you promised me? Him [two weeks later]: Your laptop is really troublesome and you should be grateful that we're working on it so you don't have to. Your bad review was really unfair. By the way, I moved a few months later (in the process going through every single item I own) and never found the power cord, so I think I can safely conclude that I did indeed bring it with the computer and they lost it. To summarize: While fixing a virus problem, they lost my power cord. Some how, which absolutely could not possibly have anything to do with their work, the motherboard got fried. It took months to figure this out. I called them at least a dozen times and nobody ever called me back. When I complained about poor customer service I was told that this was, in fact, good customer service. Just no. Stay away. read more

My 75 year old mother who has never used a computer found this place. She showed up in their shop with my dad, who has memory issues. The sales tech guy (Lee) showed her the "perfect machine" and walked her and my dad through it. Then I called from California to talk with them about my mom's purchase. I spoke with Kahlal and he was pretty incredible. They obviously have a lot of experience with all kinds of users including the "technically unsavy" and the memory impaired . He walked me through different options that they had available to assist people with memory issues. The options included imaging and deep freezing, so once my parents have the machine configured exactly how they want it they freeze it so it can always be restored to that exact state. ( I work as a software engineer, damn I want to sign-up for their support too). Anyway, I am going to recommend that my mom buy a computer from here. For not only is it everything she wants and needs, but I feel at ease knowing that the service is available for both of us. read more

Madison Geeks used to be fantastic; whatever happened, I don't think we'll be using them again. Communication is like pulling teeth - no one returns calls or has information. Had we not paid for the computer already (again, a change - full price due at ordering rather than a down payment, like it was a few years ago) we'd be long gone from there. I am only giving them one star because that is the lowest score I can give them. Called on a Thursday made an appointment for the following Monday to go out to my mother's house as I had purchased a new computer for her and she needed it installed and a tutorial on how to use Windows 8. Her old computer broke several weeks ago and she is house bound so without her computer she is just as lost as the rest of us when we can't get online. She relies on it for her connection to the outside world, purchasing groceries and supplies, etc. so you can see how important it was to get her up and running. At any rate, they person I spoke with to make the appt was very friendly and personable and I thought that I had found a good place to take care of my mother (I live in Arizona). Long story short - no one ever showed up on Monday or called to reschedule or notify her that they were going to be late - just nothing. So she calls them and is told that the tech who was supposed to take care of her got hung up on another job - okay, understandable, but why not call and let your customer know that you are not going to be able to make it and need to reschedule. She speaks with the manager and he assures her that he will be out the next day to take care of her appointment and what happens - more of the same - no show, no call, no nothing. She called them and told them never mind that she was going to make an appointment with a real company that behaved professionally and understood the value and necessity of good customer service.
